We fly out on the 16th February, I will be doing this with my 17-year-old daughter Amelia and 16 other lovely friends nicknamed as AndreasAMMFArmy! All helping me to raise money and awareness for The AMMF Cholangiocarcinoma cancer charity, a cause very close to my heart following my own battle with this deadly cancer.

NEW YEAR A new year and a new start! If you have over-indulged over the Christmas period (both physically and financially), then this is the perfect time to plan your finances for the upcoming year. How many of you will have been guilty of spending more than you can afford to over Christmas, and are now feeling a hint of ‘buyer’s remorse’?

Fraudsters are active over the festive period too; conniving and getting smarter whilst the rest of us are celebrating. In the build-up to Christmas, so often people take out ‘payday loans’ with extremely high interest rates. Taking one of these out can potentially damage your credit rating file for when you want to apply for a mortgage or other finance.

Preparation is key in avoiding these situations, and it is wise to put some money away each month for those tricky situations.

60 DIY & Home Improvement- 5 ways to make an old kitchen new again It’s one of the questions the experts get asked most- how do you spruce up a tired corner of the home, and breath fresh life into it, without forking out for a completely new room?

Focus that down on the kitchen and chances are most people start to feel even more baffled. As one of the rooms in the home we spend the most time in, and most money on, the classic image of a beautiful kitchen is impossible to remove from visions of brand new fitted cupboards, luxury ovens and top of the range white goods- a world away from words like ‘budget’, ‘quick’ or ‘cheap’.

It doesn’t have to be this way, though. Whilst we’d never recommend trying to resurrect anything that’s clearly way beyond its sell-by date, there are a few comparatively low cost, low-effort ways to give your kitchen the aesthetic spring clean it has been crying out for. Here are just a few.

1. New cabinet and cupboard fronts Providing you spent decent money on a worktop (one of the most important things in the kitchen to spend money on), the first things to start showing wear and tear will be the cupboard fronts.

Replacing these with new doors, or even just new handles, is a surefire way to make the whole room feel fresh again.

2. New cabinets De-cluttering is a great way to improve the look of any space, and the kitchen is certainly no exception to that rule. By adding a few more cabinets you can maximise off-counter storage, thus making things appear far neater and, arguably, more contemporary.

3. Install pull-out cabinet shelves The modern world is short of space, so nothing says modern kitchen like one that offers intelligent storage. Installing pull-out shelves in low level cabinets achieves exactly that, providing easy access to items like pans, baking trays and roasting dishes.

4. Add under-cabinet lighting This might worry some people, but retrofit under-cabinet lights can be simple to instal yourself, and add a wonderful touch to a kitchen- flooding the work surface below with white light. The impact is practical, given it improves visibility for chopping and reading, but also really nice to look at.

5. Plate rack These can be added to the underside of high level cupboards, freeing up vital space elsewhere and turning your plates into something of a feature. Perhaps only really suited to homes that have interesting, or at least attractive crockery, nevertheless this is a relatively quick job, with a lot to offer.

Rob Mayor, with daughters Rachel and Alex, will be setting-off on the 13th of April 2019; they hope to complete the distance in 14 days and set a new world record. The hope of raising much-needed funds, for three causes close to their hearts, will motivate the team whilst training over the cold winter months.

1. (Pic 2) Start by cutting your paper to the size of the jar, then start applying the glue to the surface of the pot, carefully place the paper onto the surface of the jar until its fully covered then turn it upside down so the bottom can be secured, as of pic 3, and leave it to dry.

2. If you are potting a plant do this next, then continue to decorate the jar with your ribbon & raffia.

3. There are endless ideas you can create your own plant pot, flower vase or tealight holder I always use the battery operated candles as the glass will become hot with normal tealights.

Wanderlust In September 2018, I left England for 3 months with the expectation that upon my return, I would happily find a job in the UK and thus, all other aspects of my life would fall into place. Only instead, I’ve found that my return has made things more complicated than ever. A random spur of job applications on a Friday afternoon led to sunbathing in Seville, sherry tasting in Jerez, camel riding along the beach in Northern Morocco- the possibilities literally became endless and it’s all because I decided to step out of my comfort zone and take an opportunity with both hands.

Working and living abroad is tricky though, and it’s by no means right for everyone.

There are days where even the most beautiful of locations are clouded in fog and rain, and many days where the cultural differences make everyday life difficult. There was one moment where I had to book a car over the phone, and after finally managing to talk to someone who spoke English- she scoffed at me, saying “how can you be an intern here without speaking any Spanish”. Moments like these will make you doubt whether working in such an environment is possible, ‘easy’ tasks in the UK that we take for granted take on new life when there are communication barriers.

However, when I look back on my time abroad, these are not the moments I think of.

Successfully completing tasks despite language barriers, and despite difficulties, only makes the completed work more of a triumph. Work that enabled me to blog about travel experiences for a major tour company, enabled me to become fully immersed in a different way of life, and most of all helped me to realise that more is possible in my future than I had previously believed. And so, my next aim is to find more adventures, to seek more experiences, and to challenge myself more than I ever have before. I’ll push back real life once again- who knows, maybe further study can come after travel?

Tom Kerridge’s feel-good festival Pub in the Park returns

Following on from the huge success of his touring Pub in the Park festival in 2018, Tom Kerridge has announced that it will be back – and even bigger and better for 2019 – with eight events across the UK. Knutsford is back on the list again (7th-9th June this time around) with The Lambing Shed once again playing host to the laid-back festival.

Andrea’s AMMF Army – Fundraising update…

My name is Andrea and I run these little directories that you are reading, as many of you know I was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer in October 2015 called Cholangiocarcinoma (cancer of the bile duct). This cancer has one of the worst survival rates of all cancers. The AMMF is the UK’s only Cholangiocarcinoma Cancer Charity, dedicated to tackling this devastating cancer on all fronts: providing information and support, campaigning to raise awareness, and encouraging and supporting research.

Over the past 2 1/2 years with the help of my friends, I have organized lots of various fundraising events, from Charity Ladies Nights, climbing The Three Peaks, Firewalking, a Mad Hatter Cycle Tea Party, bag packing at Morrisons in Middlewich and the pinnacle of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with my son and friends in February 2018!

People and businesses have been so generous with their support, and all together so far, we have raised over a whopping £42,000 (with gift aid £53,004)!

Vietnam to Cambodia Cycle Challenge

Together the 18 of us will spend a week cycling 450km across 2 amazing countries, Vietnam and Cambodia, we even have a small mountain to climb in between! We have had a team kit designed which we will be wearing on our trip and we are very grateful to all our sponsors. We have all selffunded our places, so 100% of funds raised will go directly to the charity.

This will be a massive challenge for us all, many of my team have also been affected by cancer and have also lost loved ones and wish to help me raise awareness and much needed funds for the AMMF cancer charity.

Every penny raised helps fund valuable research into ways of trying to identify this deadly cancer earlier, and hopefully will help save more lives going forward!

I’m continuing to have scans every few months and have been told this devasting cancer could come back at any stage, setting myself these challenges has helped me to stay positive and focused.
