Dear Readers - Welcome to the latest edition! Autumn is upon us, the nights are drawing in and as I am writing this my house feels very strange and empty, as two of my children are now back in school! They were looking forward to having some type of normality back in their lives and being able to see their friends again. As much as lockdown was needed, for the mental wellbeing of my children and the social development with their peers, they needed to get back into the school environment. After just a few days back, they have adapted well to their new environment and I can happily hold my hands up and say I will not miss the home schooling, especially trying to teach my youngest maths. The simplest of equations are taught very differently to when I was at school and have taken me most of the summer to understand! I feel extremely passionate about my little magazines and hope you are finding them useful too, not everyone uses social media, so these magazines are a great way to communicate important information to residents. We have lots of lovely businesses advertising with us, that really need your help and support to get back on their feet too, so please consider using their services and remember to mention you saw them in here when you call them! If you have not considered using my magazines before, now is a great time to start. We have advertising packages to suit every budget and can help with the design of your advert too and do not charge for this service. I produce 5 separate magazines covering Sandbach, Holmes Chapel, Congleton, Winsford and Northwich areas, reaching OVER 46,000 homes across Cheshire. We now also deliver over 500 extra magazines each month to businesses across these areas too! So, if you are a business owner wanting to reach new customers, or know someone else that is, please get in touch, as our little magazines really do work! Don’t forget the clocks go back on the 25th October! Please Follow us on Facebook & Twitter too and keep up with our latest information and offers..

Holmes Chapel Parish Council Conservation Area Appraisal The Parish Council is delighted to have been awarded a grant from the Neighbourhood Planning Programme to fund a Conservation Area Appraisal. The original Conservation Area was designated in 1975 and has not been re-appraised since, so this is a good opportunity for it to be revisited. Kirsty from Henderson Heritage will be carrying out the appraisal, and we look forward to sharing the results with residents. Council and Committee Meetings The Parish Council holds regular meetings of the Full Council, but also three Committees; Amenities, Village Infrastructure and Strategy & Finance. The Committees cover a range of different areas including Highways, the Dane Meadow, Council Finances and much more. The dates, times, agendas and minutes for these meetings can be found on our website: https://www. holmeschapelparishcouncil.gov.uk/meetings We discuss a wide range of issues that affect the village and residents are very welcome to attend these meetings. There is always a time at the start of the meetings for members of the public to participate in. We usually hold these meetings in the Community Centre but due to the current situation are holding them via Zoom. All the information on how to join the meetings can be found on the relevant agenda. Picton Square Holmes Chapel Parish Council is looking to fund some improvements to Picton Square, to create a pleasant, quiet area that residents can enjoy. We would like to understand what residents, especially those who live on or near Picton Square wish to see improved in that area. We would be grateful if you could take the time to complete the questionnaire, which can be found online at https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/pictonsquare Contact The Parish office on 01477 533 934 (Lines open 9am-1pm Monday-Friday) or email clerk@holmeschapelparishcouncil.gov.uk To advertise call 01270 765619 or visit www.tedmags.co.uk

Special dates for the young & old… Late last year I wrote a series of articles on dating for the over 60’s. The Covid epidemic (and my own personal success of finding my future husband) put an end to that subject. However, now I am part of a pair, I started to think of unique places to go for dinner or overnight stays in the surrounding area, particularly as my other half isn’t from this part of the country. So starts a new series, special dates for old and young alike. If you want to share your own hidden gems, please email me on cheshiregreatdates@gmail.com I’m actually going on a narrow boat holiday this week, which makes me think this would be one of the more unusual dates. In Cheshire a couple can rent a narrow boat for the weekend from as little as £390, or 3 days midweek for the same price. Hiring companies make sure you can handle the boat confidently and take you through at least one lock. The good thing about canals is the abundance of pubs and restaurants alongside the towpath and there’s no bigger buzz than mooring up in the middle of Chester. Of course, taking another couple with you, you share the driving and locks, and laughs! A weekend for four can start at £420, but high season is considerably higher, so carefully choose dates. There is a refundable deposit to consider, as well as fuel costs, but this is the only time most of us can use red diesel legally! If you love the thrill of driving a super car this would not be your kind of getaway, as maximum speed on the canals in the UK is 4mph, but there are no traffic lights, usually no queues and amazing romantic nights. Is this one for you to consider? Remember to send me a message, telling me if I converted you to trying a narrowboat getaway, or giving me other suggestions cheshiregreatdates@gmail.com Thanks for reading Diane xxx To advertise call 01270 765619 or visit www.tedmags.co.uk

WHERE THERE’S A WILL….THERE’S A WAY Most people know they need to make a Will, some even understand the importance of a power of attorney, but too many people keep putting it off for another day as Wills get seen as low priority.

Call For Details

Question – ‘If your television stops working tonight what do you do tomorrow? Get it fixed, maybe order a new TV?’ This is because that daily fix of entertainment is seen as high priority.

0800 018 4480

We spend our lives saving, investing, buying a house, paying into a pension and loving our family yet we keep putting off THE most important document in the legal system. Your Will says who will inherit these assets, look after your young ✓ 20 years in children, and who will be responsible for sorting it all out – Unfortunately in our example the television is more important than your Will! Business ✓ 20,000 Clients At Complete Wills we believe that the process of making a Will should be simple Based in Crewe we’ve had 20 years in business and have helped over 20,000 people write their Wills. Our consultant, who lives locally to you, will provide a friendly home visit fixed fee service. It’ll take about an hour to advise you and to record your instructions, once approved we will return with your Will to supervise the signing and witnessing of the document, and the matter is dealt with. Shop Local

5 Reasons

to Shop Local One unexpected and welcome outcome from the Coronovirus lockdown is the way in which many small businesses have been able to adapt so that they can keep trading. We’ve seen cafes become grocers, restaurants develop collection and take-away services almost overnight, shops develop online e-commerce stores, and salon owners becoming YouTube stars as they share their skills and expertise with ever widening and appreciative audiences. Even during times of crisis, the demand to shop can open up new opportunities in many industries. At The Effective Directories we’ve always believed that shopping local plays a vital role, and no matter what our world will look like in the future we should all carry on supporting local enterprise. So here are 5 reasons why shopping local matters, now more than ever. 1. It builds local communities & strengthens local economies When you support a local business, you are supporting your friends, family, and neighbours. The availability of local shops is especially important for the elderly, vulnerable, young people and those without access to private transport. Plus the more money that local councils make in rent and rates, the more they can spend on supporting local infrastructure and public services. 2. Local small businesses add character to towns and villages A small business or boutique shop adds character to the city or town when you walk or drive by. In a world that has become increasingly dominated by chain stores, a local business’s branding is unique and often quirky, adding something different to your High Street, offering an alternative experience, and bringing a much needed breath of fresh air into areas populated by generic stores and companies.

grow, and as they grow they’ll recruit more staff from the local population. Plus their success will encourage other local businesses to open up to take advantage of the footfall, encouraging other people to take the plunge and become entrepreneurs too! 4. You get a more personalised service Local business owners are friendly and engaging, they get to know their customers at a personal level and can provide better advice about their products and services. Local traders value your business more since their survival depends on their good reputation and repeat business. They can often adapt their products to suit your personal requirements, or source something bespoke for you, which big chains won’t do. 5. It’s better for the environment Shopping local means less mileage and petrol costs for you, which helps reduce CO2 emissions. Plus local shops often stock locally sourced goods which not only supports the local economy but also reduces transport times and costs of the goods, which impacts positively on their carbon footprint. We know its tempting to default to the big chains or to buy online. But shopping locally is usually just as cost-effective and convenient, plus you are supporting your local community, rather than putting money in nameless and faceless shareholders’ pockets.

3. Shopping local creates more job opportunities and encourages entrepreneurship A local business that becomes a success will

The Sixth Form at Sandbach School Sandbach School Sixth Form is a dynamic and vibrant place where students are given the freedom and opportunity to develop as an individual and make the important steps towards Higher Education, apprenticeship or employment. The Sixth Form has a tradition of balancing academic excellence with the best extra-curricular opportunities to help students make the most of their time there. Academic Excellence An integral aspect of our Sixth form is academic success. Academic success is important to us because it is strongly linked to positive outcomes; 6th Form students who are academically successful are more likely to gain a place with one of the more prestigious universities or on a Degree Level Apprenticeship. Such a placement can lead to better employment opportunities in the future. The academic focus encourages students to take a far greater level of individual responsibility for their education. The development of essential independent learning skills is supported by bespoke pastoral programme which is based entirely upon developing a 6th Form student’s A level Mindset. Such skills, once established, will not only aid successful A level attainment, but will also develop independent abilities which are crucial for achievement and success at university, within apprenticeships and beyond. Student leadership opportunities Central to the school’s philosophy of developing outstanding young people is providing them with the opportunities to develop their leadership potential. This leadership program enhances their chances of success in university and employer applications by enabling them to demonstrate successful behaviours. The opportunities available include Head Boy and Girl Team, Prefect, Learning Mentor, Student Curriculum Leader, Senior House Captain / House Ambassador, Sports Captain, Student Ambassador, Student Senator / Representative.

To advertise call 01270 765619 or visit www.tedmags.co.uk

Leading the school forward Each year around eleven students are successful in being appointed to the Head Boy and Girl Team, the apex of which involves being Head Boy/Girl or Deputy. Positions on the Head Boy and Girl Team are highly sought after and represent a fantastic opportunity to take a lead role in the running of the school and the sixth form. The positive implications for this in terms of skills development and career preparation are far-reaching hugely satisfying for those students who are successful in this programme. In addition to this, senior students form a significant part of the school’s Senate, designed to put student leadership at the heart the school’s development. Other Activities & Experiences Employers and universities place a high value on your extracurricular experiences, and staff at the school are passionate about offering a range of opportunities that compare well with the very best schools nationally. In recent years students in have been on trips to places such as New Zealand, Canada, Borneo, South Africa and Barcelona. They have also played in major sporting finals at a regional and national level, put on nationally acclaimed theatre productions and won major awards for music. Sunekos Facial Rejuvenation - Winner of the Safety in Beauty Innovation and Pioneering award 2019, Sunekos is a non-surgical treatment comprising of a unique combination of hyaluronic acid and amino acids which triggers a skin regeneration process called dermal biogenesis. It is ideally for those who want to restore the naturally youthful look of your skin and improve signs of ageing. It is an injectable treatment that’s entirely different to filler treatments as it uses a patented formula which combines amino acids (the essential building blocks of elastin and collagen ) with hyaluronic acid. Sunekos regenerates the Extra Cellular Matrix (ECM) of your skin and deeply hydrates and plumps the treated tissue. This leads to ‘dermal biogenesis’. This results in a reduction in the severity of your wrinkles, hydration to both the superficial and deep layers of your skin, and has a desirable volumising effect and a dramatic boost to your elastin and collagen. This treatment is ideal if you have loose, crepey, thin skin and/or a loss of volume around your eyes. It is also suited to help with lines, wrinkles, crepiness, volume-loss and laxity on your neck and face. Sunekos can significantly regenerate your ageing skin and restore a natural-looking, youthful appearance. Prices start from £125 per treatment, up to 4 treatments may be required for full results. Discount for a full package will apply. See www. sunekos.com for more details of this new innovative treatment. Biorepeel C3 35% TCA Medical Grade Chemical Peel – This is an innovative treatment, using a patented 2-phase technology. It provides a bio-stimulating, revitalising & peelinglike effect. However it has little/no downtime and only minimal peeling if any! As a result, the combination of the active components allows it to effectively prevent the ageing of the skin. Also, it decreases damage from UV light, pigmentation or acne. Furthermore, the treatment is suitable for young skin during acute stages of acne, black heads, with recent or “fresh” scaring, as well as treating fine wrinkles. This treatment can be used on the face, neck, & other areas of the lower body including hands, knees & feet. Prices from £45 per peel. NEW -Peri-oral rejuvenation including tear trough £200 per ml

Updates from The Office of Police & Crime Commissioner for Cheshire….

PCC introduces ground-breaking approach for female offenders

A new initiative to reduce reoffending amongst women is being trialed by Cheshire Police and restorative justice provider Remedi in the Crewe and Macclesfield local policing areas thanks to funding from the county’s police and crime commissioner David Keane. The innovative programme works with female offenders to address the root causes of their crime, including poverty, domestic abuse or sexual abuse or drug / alcohol abuse, in order to reduce their risk of reoffending and protect the community. PCC David Keane with the Remedi Cheshire team

The project is being run by Remedi out of the towns’ Women’s Centres, which bring support services together to address the diverse, and often complex, needs of females. It is being trialed as an alternative to the traditional criminal justice process and will see a case worker work closely with the offenders to develop appropriate practical solutions to address their offending whilst also working with victims to help them recover from their ordeal. PCC David Keane said: “There is a wealth of research which suggests there are often extremely complex reasons why women commit crime which are often significantly different to the reasons why men commit crime. Furthermore, the implications for women when interacting with the criminal justice system can be profound, in particular the impact on the family. “I support schemes which divert women from the criminal justice system and I have provided funding to support the development of a number of Women’s Centres across Cheshire which work with females to address their complex needs and in turn, protect the community by reducing their risk of reoffending. “This pilot project is not about letting offenders ‘off lightly’. It’s about addressing the complex needs of offenders without resorting to costly prison sentences which, in the case of female offenders, can have major implications for children, whilst often doing little to address the problems women face and which are often the root cause of the crimes”. The service will not be exclusively for women and the developed approaches will be used in other appropriate cases. This approach seeks to intervene early to address needs, prevent offending and maintain the integrity of the family environment. Lisa Gill, manager of Remedi in Cheshire, added: “Remedi will be working with the offender

to carry out an assessment to ensure individual needs are identified and supported. During the restorative programme, the victim will also be invited to provide their thoughts and explain how the crime has affected them. “They may also take part in a face-to-face meeting with the offender to help them both understand the impact of the crime and prevent this happening again in the future. “Repairing harm and improving community relationships is key for people to feel supported and able to access local support. Involving victims in the process creates long term more positive relationship.” Chief inspector Simon Newell added: “We really pleased to be taking part in this scheme, which I truly believe will make a real difference. “There are a number of complex reasons why people become involved in crime, but I hope that by exploring different ways of dealing with offenders, and providing them with the services and support they require, then we will be able to reduce the chances of them reoffending.” For further information, please contact Caroline Tozer caroline.tozer@cheshire.pnn.police.uk or 07773178104.

Salt Trail Length of walk: 4 miles Difficulty: Easy Accessibility: Paths are wide and of a good quality compacted surface or tarmac and should be suitable for wheelchair users.

This month’s Jack’s Tracks visits Northwich, a place that today fits nicely into the pigeon-hole of genteel and leafy Cheshire, but it wasn’t always this way. Back in 1670, the Smith-Barry family of Marbury Hall were searching their land for evidence of coal which they could extract for commercial gain, but instead discovered huge resources of rock salt, a remnant from the Triassic period when seawater moved inland, creating shallow salt marshes.

road (Marbury Road), turn right and follow the road for almost 700 yards until you arrive at a collection of steel and wooden gates on your left.

By the 1830’s, the salt mining industry in Northwich had ceased and the industry moved to nearby Winsford, leaving behind a mass of industrial wasteland and collapsed pits. This easy four-mile walk demonstrates the amazing ability of Mother Nature to renew even the most scarred of landscapes.

Once you go through the steel gate at the end of the path, take the path on the left. Follow this path for approximately 200 yards, take the foot bridge on the right and you’ll eventually end up on the road, where you’ll arrive, 300 yards later, at the Salt Lion Works. You can walk through the Salt Lion Works to get to the Trent and Mersey Canal and then turn left down the towpath.

Follow the brown signs to the Anderton Boat Lift (CW9 6FW) and park up in the pay and display car park. Take the path leading off from the centre of the car park, directly across from the pay machine. Go through the pretty butterfly barriers and then bear immediate left. At the next fork bear right and, just after the stone artwork a little further on, bear right once more and go past the wooden gate, heading downhill through a wooden area. At the next fork, bear left towards Hyden Pool, and once you get past the next information board, you can take either fork to end up at a wooden bridge. Cross the bridge and carry on in the same direction until you arrive at another bridge by reed beds, cross here and, once again, go in the same direction. After 750 yards on this path, which runs parallel to Witton Brook, you’ll arrive at the eastern entrance to Anderton Nature Park; turn right towards Marbury Park and a few yards later when you arrive on a single track

Aim for the path that represents a 90 degree left turn from the road, so go through the gates and pick up this path. Follow this path for a further 700 yards, but whilst you’re on this path do take the chance to check out the bird hide.

Follow the towpath for almost two miles, past tranquil Cheshire countryside and an attractive marina, passing the coffee boat and the fudge boat en-route, until you reach the Anderton Boat Lift and its car park from where you started the walk. https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/places-to-visit/andertonboat-lift-visitor-centre http://lionsaltworks.westcheshiremuseums.co.uk/

For those with the OS Maps app on your desktop, mobile or tablet, this walk is named: JT-Singing-Ringing-Tree

Start to cut the wool on the edge as pic 3, make sure you don’t pull the wool when doing this as you need to follow with a piece of wool down the middle of the 2 cards and then tie tightly, pull the card off and you should have a lovely fluffy pompom! 4. Decorate the jar as desired, I covered the lid, all you need is to trace the jar lid on a piece of fabric allow 1cm extra so you can cover the edge of the jar lid too. 5.finish decorating then fill your jar, maybe with sweets, buttons or hair slides? 53 Nantwich Museum reopens to the public

After almost six months in hibernation, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Nantwich Museum will reopen to the public from 10.30am on Friday 18th September.

It will be open on Saturday 19th September and thereafter on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays with a view to returning to full opening hours as soon as possible.

Visitors must book their visit in advance by calling the museum on 01270 627 104 when they will also be advised of any speciÞc requirements.

There is still an opportunity to visit the temporary exhibition in the Millennium Gallery entitled “Personal Voices” by the Breakaway Textile Group. This will remain in place until the end of the year.

Despite the closure, museum staff have been working from home and, more recently, at the museum itself.

They’ve used the opportunity to undertake several housekeeping tasks which are difficult under normal circumstances.

Planning for the reopening has also been a major task in itself - with the top priority being the protection of staff, volunteers and visitors.

Museum manager Kate Dobson commented: “I am extremely grateful to all those volunteers who have been only too keen to enable the museum to reopen as soon as possible despite what will inevitably be challenging conditions.”

She reassured visitors that everything would be done to make their visit as enjoyable as possible.

The museum has also been seeking the funding required to Þnance additional requirements.

The museum has acknowledged the continued support of Cheshire East Council and Nantwich Town Council while other income streams have all been curtailed for several months.

It costs around £1,200 per week to run the museum, which is a registered charity.

Andrea’s AMMF Army – Fundraising update… All of us at AMMF are delighted to have been invited by Andrea Sheardown to write an article for this publication. Andrea, as many readers will know, has a particular reason for this. AMMF is the UK and Europe’s only charity dedicated solely to cholangiocarcinoma (CCA). CCA (or bile duct cancer) is considered rare, but the incidence is growing year on year globally and currently we don’t understand why this is. Its symptoms can be vague, leading to late or missed diagnosis, which can mean surgery, the only potentially curative treatment there is, is not possible. Andrea was fortunate – if being diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma and fortunate can be mentioned in the same sentence – in that she was able to have surgery to remove her CCA, and she followed this with a course of chemotherapy. Gruelling treatments indeed, so she could well have been forgiven for getting back to her delightful family and her life, and never wanting to hear the word cholangiocarcinoma again. But, for those of you who know her, that’s not Andrea’s style! Since recovering from her treatments, she has set herself challenge after challenge – to raise the awareness of CCA and to fundraise for AMMF. Michaela, AMMF’s Fundraising Support Officer, explains, “The coronavirus pandemic has put a hold on many key moments in the AMMF fundraising calendar, including marathons and other sporting events. Like many charities, the team at AMMF had to quickly adapt to fundraising in the ‘virtual’ world. We put the call out to our To advertise call 01270 765619 or visit www.tedmags.co.uk

supporters to join in with a variety of virtual events such as ‘AMMF’s Summer 20 Challenge’ and the nationwide ‘2.6 Challenge’. Andrea and her family kindly, once again got on their bikes for AMMF and helped to raise much needed funds.

55

“Andrea has taken on many challenges for AMMF, from ladies only charity nights, climbing the ‘Three Peaks’, fire walking, a ‘Mad Hatters Cycle Tea Party’, Christmas polar posts, music festivals to supermarket bag packing. All these events have led to Andrea and her ‘Andrea’s AMMF Army’ to challenge themselves with amazing ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ fundraising events. These have included climbing Kilimanjaro in February 2018, cycling over 450km from Vietnam to Cambodia in 2019 and this year the ultimate climbing experience, reaching Everest Base Camp. In total Andrea and her ‘Army’ have helped to raise over £70,000 for AMMF’s vital work and cholangiocarcinoma research.” There is no doubt that Andrea is an amazing fundraiser for AMMF. As a cholangiocarcinoma survivor herself, her tireless initiatives which help to raise not only funds but awareness of this neglected and devastating disease, are truly inspirational. And Andrea’s courage in facing her ever more challenging fundraising events is contagious – a fact borne out by the growing army of supporters, ‘Andrea’s AMMF Army’. We are so grateful to Andrea, to her family and to all the ‘Army’ for their invaluable support in helping to ensure AMMF can continue its work. Traditional Trinidadian Pelau Pelau is Trinidad’s signature national dish and epitomises Caribbean cooking. Its delicious smooth flavour comes from browning the meat in caramelised sugar and simmering with coconut milk. This recipe calls for beef, but it can also be made with chicken. Serves 6 INGREDIENTS 3 tablespoons brown sugar 450g diced stewing steak 300ml water, or as needed 275g uncooked brown rice 250ml coconut milk 450g dry chickpeas, soaked overnight in cold water 1 carrot, peeled and chopped 1 tablespoon coarsely chopped fresh parsley METHOD 1. In a large saucepan over a medium heat, cook the sugar until it begins to caramelise. Add the beef, stir to coat with the sugar, and cook until wellbrowned. 2. Add the water, coconut milk, rice, chickpeas and carrot and stir to combine with the beef. Bring to a gentle simmer then cover and cook for 45 minutes, until the rice is done. Stir frequently during cooking. 3. Garnish with the fresh parsley, then serve immediately with slices of tomato, avocado and cucumber. This article was downloaded from http://www.freefeatures.com.
