6 Dear Readers - Welcome to the latest edition! I really cannot believe the summer holidays are upon us already, I feel like I have been in a time warp for the past 3 months! Life certainly has been a mix highs and lows.

The highs of spending extra time at home with my 3 children and husband, enjoying extended walks in the beautiful countryside on our doorstep, but the lows of not knowing if my husband still has a job with the airline he works for and worrying about our families future. We have been very lucky so far and managed to all stay fit and well, which is the most important thing and are hoping to spend some of August over in Anglesey. I’m so looking forward to recharging my batteries by the sea!

Sandbach Town Council Introducing: The New Mayor for Sandbach A new Mayor of Sandbach for 2020-2021 was elected by Town Councillors at the inaugural ‘virtual’ Sandbach Town Council Annual General Meeting on Zoom, on Thursday 11th June. Councillor Geraint Price Jones, who was Deputy Mayor for 2019-2020, was elected and has now taken over the responsibility and chains from outgoing Mayor – Councillor Mike Muldoon. Councillor Kathryn Flavell was elected by members as Deputy Mayor to support Geraint during his mayoral year.

The new Mayor thanked the outgoing Mayor for his assistance and inclusive nature during his year, and noted that this has made him feel much more confident in taking on the role himself. He noted that his personal plans and goals for the year have been put on the back burner as the community of Sandbach face the need to rebuild as a community following the COVID-19 pandemic.

During his Mayoral year, he hopes to endeavour to keep the work of the Town Council moving at a good pace to continue the good work being done in the Markets and Town Hall, as well as other assets in the Town which the Council is responsible for. The Mayor also hopes to reach out to local organisations and individuals of the town to support and develop work being done by them for the good of Sandbach. It was noted that many residents mental health will have been tested during the past few months, and that we must do our best to support individuals and organisations. To this end, The Mayor will be looking to invest time into the setting up of a community support hub for this purpose.

He also hopes to resurrect the chamber of commerce to help the voices of Sandbach Business be heard.

The Mayor will be fundraising for Leighton Hospital Children’s Ward, Teenage Youth Cancer Trust and Mental Health Provision for Youth, and will actively support Foden’s Band and Sandbach Concert Series.

Passwords – Relief is in Sight!

They are the bane of everyone’s life, yet they are essential for our security and safety.

Passwords have plagued the world for decades, but with seemingly every website we use and every device we own requiring one, remembering them all has now become impossible. That in itself has become a security issue, because we are tempted to use simple, easy to remember passwords, or reuse the same one in multiple places, leaving us very vulnerable if one should be compromised.

I will look at security in general in a future article, but today let’s just relieve that burden.

English words plus place and personal names (which is why your last holiday destination is a bad choice). Even if we mix it up a bit – hackers know all about substituting 4 for A, 1 for I or L, zero for O etc. – you can still zip through the possibilities in a fraction of a second. It is clear that using a real word or name is a fatal error.

Modern computers can check about 7 billion passwords every second. If your password consists of 8 lower case letters, a hacker could try every single possibility in half a minute. Not much security at all. With 14 letters it’s around 290 years. But include a mix of upper and lower case letters, digits and symbols – about 92 characters that can be easily reached on your keyboard – then an 8 character password gives 23 million year’s worth, give or take a century or two.

So always have at least one character from each ofthose four groups.

The ideal password is completely random, like w%1EU7Poi[$r, which is too hard to remember, but if you choose something like Orange1! then a hacker could break it in seconds. They use a dictionary attack, trying each of the 60,000 or so commonly used

How to choose a safe password

The solution to all this is to use a password manager. This is a program that integrates

into your Internet browser and both remembers and generates long, random passwords for you, so you never have to enter them again. Most of these programs will also synchronise them between your computers and other devices like phones.

The passwords are safely encrypted using a key only you know – that is the only password you will ever need to remember.

And how do you do that? Write it down.

Keep it separate from your computer and of course, write neatly, remembering that capital/lower case letters are significant.

Spring your lawn back to life!

Spring brings promise of longer days, milder weather and life in full bloom. But what does that mean for your lawn?

Giving your house a spring clean is a popular activity this time of year and your garden deserves the same attention if you want it to look its best. When we do venture back outside, we are often faced with overgrown shrubbery and under-loved lawns, and bringing your garden back to life can seem like a daunting task. But it doesn’t have to be!

As the temperatures gets milder, now is the perfect time to give your lawn some much needed TLC to keep it healthy and weed free in the months ahead. Last year’s milder winter means that your lawn has probably continued growing all year and could have done with attention a little earlier than usual.

First things first, it pays to take care of any bare patches that may have appeared. The best way to deal with them is to carefully rake the patch and then sow some grass seeds mixed with a little top-soil. It’s important not to let the seeds dry out so remember to keep them well watered and you should see some sprouts appearing within a few days.

Grass needs as much direct sunlight as possible to stay healthy and green so raking up any dead leaves and twigs is another important job and can be a great way to get the kids involved and develop their ‘green thumbs’! As a rule of thumb, the first dry and sunny day in March is the ideal time to give your lawn its first cut of the year. Cutting the grass too short, too soon can attract unwanted weeds and moss so to avoid that happening, make sure you use the highest blade setting on your lawnmower.

Special fertilisers are available to use at this time of year to give grass the essential nutrients it needs to grow strong and give it a vibrant colour; these seasonal treatments have been specially developed to work in cooler temperatures. Spring weather conditions tend to result in a flourish of young weeds, and selecting a treatment that includes an herbicide can help to control broad-leaved weeds such as daisies, clovers, dandelions and buttercups.

Once you’ve carried out basic maintenance on your lawn, it pays to plan ahead to prevent all your hard work in the spring going to waste and to guarantee a beautiful lawn you can enjoy all summer long. Hotter weather and dry spells over the summer can lead to your lawn turning yellow and drying up. There are some really effective treatments out there that can help keep grass stay greener for longer, such as the Oasis treatment from local lawn care specialist GreenThumb. Dating for the over sixties...

More and more seniors are entering the dating game, with very few tools to handle this process in the electronic age. My monthly column is to help some people, describing pitfalls and safety, with a fair amount of humour from my own personal experiences. This month is actually the final one about me, but would love to post stories from other people (don’t worry I won’t reveal your name). Email me on Over60sDating@hotmail.com.

Breaking all the rules.

When I set out to write these articles, I knew it was necessary to have lots of casual dates for material. Therefore I decided to only contact people within a 25-mile radius, as surely someone would be willing to travel that far to meet me, right?

Setting that criteria on the couple of dating websites I was using made my selection easier....in fact they emailed me whenever a person registered who I might find interesting. One day a new prospect appeared on my list. He was my age, still working, good looking and seemed to like flash cars and motor bikes. Without looking into this further I quickly sent him a message, but minutes later realised he live 70 miles away. A second message from me apologised, saying he looked really nice and it was a shame he lived too far away. His immediate reply was that he had a car and was willing to travel.

Now I had a dilemma.... I was looking for material for my blog and not a serious relationship, so how could I agree to meet a man who was obviously going out of his way? My interest in him won over my conscience and we met up that weekend for an early dinner.

Dinner date Not only did I break the 25-mile rule, I also gave him my address to pick me up.

I wasn’t totally crazy though, and gave his mobile number and destination to two cousins, with a promise to call them by a certain time. Dinner went well, conversation flowed and he suggested we go to a pub with live music. Finally back to mine for coffee and then I told him it was time for him to take that 70-mile drive home.

What happened next Well that first date was several months ago. Since Covid we have been inseparable, staying partly at my house and partly as his. He has decided that life with me is better than work and should retire in 2021, while I have decided that breaking the rules was the smartest thing I have ever done!.

Transition to secondary school Transition to secondary school is always a daunting time in the lives of Year 6 students, and their parents, but never more so during the coronavirus pandemic. Faced with the prospect of none of the usual transition events being able to go ahead, Sandbach School quickly had to adapt to the whole new world of virtual transition in order to make sure students were able to still have an effective and successful transition.

As Learning and Intervention Manager Ollie Yates said, ‘Transition from primary to secondary is so important to get right, we couldn’t allow the current situation to affect the current Year 6s’.

Our key priority started off trying to replicate the 2-day transition day experience all Year 6 students usually have. Central to this was the tour with older students, where the Year 6 meet their form tutors and get a taste of lessons from across the curriculum. Laura Kane Assistant Headteacher says ‘It wasn’t going to be an easy task but our Year 7 team totally embraced it and quickly developed a series of superb videos: a ‘meet the Year 7 team’ saw staff sharing interesting facts about themselves, there was a tour from 2 members of the Head Boy and Girl Team and an impressive video conferenced ‘face time’ event with questions sent in from year 6s and answered by the Year 7 students in school at the time as part of our Key worker programme. We were so proud of our staff and students response to these challenging times.’

Next, in order to give students a taste of the curriculum at Sandbach School, each department area developed a range of challenges for Year 6 to embark in. These range from reading bingo, to the ‘loo roll’ challenge to the competitive ‘geogueser’ and even challenged students to create their own lockdown time capsule. Ollie Yates says ‘we have been amazed at the response from Year 6 students. We received hundreds of challenges and been staggered with the level of creativity from our new Year 7s.’

have been fortunate enough to have been able to hold a series of socially distant primary school visits. As Ollie says, the links we have with our primary schools is excellent and this has really showed during this difficult couple of months. Working with our Year 6 colleagues, we have been able to get all the information we need about the students to ensure we can best plan for their transition.

One advantage of the wider school closure is that the school has been able to offer some extended transition to students who may need additional support to ensure a successful transition Ollie Yates comments ‘this has been pivotal in ensuring these students, and their parents feel more confident and comfortable about high school. It has been great to get to know these students before the start of term in September.’

Sandbach School have also prioritised other ‘transitions’ in the last few weeks and have been able to bring Year 7 students in for a range of sessions. Each student left with a personalised novel, bought from a former student’s book store, for them to read and enjoy over summer, underlying the importance of reading for students.

And in the final week of term, year 8 students have come back to school for their traditional graduation ceremony. As Ollie Yates says ‘we have learnt over recent years how important it is to finish years on a positive and we are delighted that we have been able to close Year 7 and 8 for students’

Updates from The Office of Police & Crime Commissioner for Cheshire….

Police commissioner welcomes progress of domestic abuse bill Cheshire’s police and crime commissioner David Keane is welcoming the passing of a ‘landmark’ bill which will bring greater protection for survivors of domestic abuse but warned of the need for a broader focus to protect community-based services.

The Domestic Abuse Bill is intended to further improve the effectiveness of the justice system in providing protection for victims of the crime and bringing perpetrators to justice. It will also strengthen the support for victims of abuse and their children. The bill has now passed through the House of Commons and is now making its way through the House of Lords before it is enshrined into law.

The new legislation will ensure that for the first time, children who see, hear or experience the effects of domestic abuse will be treated as victims under law.

It will also introduce the first legal government definition of domestic abuse which will include economic abuse and coercive or controlling behaviour. The bill also includes an amendment to ban killers using the ‘rough sex defence’.

An amendment to the bill was also tabled to broaden the statutory duty on public authorities, including police and crime commissioners, to commission specialist support for all those affected by domestic abuse. This would have included community-based services, as well as accommodation-based services.

PCC David Keane said: “There is broad consensus across the political spectrum that this landmark bill will have a huge impact on the way domestic abuse is treated within our justice system, bringing increased protection for survivors and their children whilst also bringing more perpetrators of his heinous crime to justice.

“I hope that the government continues to engage on the issue of protecting community-based services and listens carefully to those in sector who have raised this issue, such as the Domestic Abuse Commissioner.

“It is important that we have community-based services that survivors can easily access. In Cheshire, I prioritise both accommodation and community-based services for all survivors of domestic abuse – whether they have reported the crime or not.

Sandstone Trail Length of walk: 7 miles Difficulty: Medium/Hard Accessibility: Unsuitable for wheelchairs. Lots of stairs and steep parts to negotiate.

Park up at the free car park off Simons Lane (WA6 6HQ) near Frodsham – look for the phone masts. At the entrance to the car park turn left and follow Simons Lane downhill until you see a bungalow (Overhill) and turn left up the shared driveway/footpath.

Follow the footpath right up to and over the driveway to a care home (Heathercliffe), and carry on down a wooded path downhill. Once you reach Bellemonte Road, turn right then left at the Bellemonte pub.

Look out for the footpath sign on the right and follow this down into a wooden area. You’re faced with a fork almost immediately and you need to bear left. You’ll pass a Frodsham Hill Wood sign and straight after a fingerpost; head for Delamere/Beeston and carry on in that direction on the ridge of the wooden area, ignoring various turn offs (including one for the Sandstone Trail).

Follow the path; after Alf and Grace’s bench you’ll arrive at a fingerpost, go down the wooden stairway and come to a fork. Bear left if you want to clamber down some very steep and large steps set in the sandstone cliffs or carry straight on if you want to go the much safer route and follow the path down two flights of metal steps. Either way, you’ll arrive at another fingerpost and you should follow the sign to Delamere.

A few yards further on you’ll cross a wooden bridge and come to sign number 596, indicating you need to climb up the steep cliff steps on the right (towards Whitchurch). Once you’ll get to the top, you’ll be by the 10th hole of Frodsham Golf Club. Follow the path until you come to David Nicholls’ bench.

At this point the Sandstone Trail itself weaves uphill, but instead carry on in the same direction until the wood opens up somewhat, and look out for a ½ fingerpost sign; take a 90 degree left turn here and, when you come to a ‘proper tree’ sign, bear left uphill and then right at the next fork, on somewhat level ground.

Once you arrive at the next fingerpost, take a 90-degree right turn and follow the Sandstone Trail all the way downhill for over ½ mile until you reach The Ridgeway Road. Turn left uphill for 150 yards and once you arrive at the Ridgeway Country Holiday Park, look for the footpath opposite. Climb the steps then more steps downhill and bear left when you reach a brook - follow the path parallel to the brook and cross the wooden footbridge a little further on.

Take the path uphill and follow the path round the edge of the woods, bearing left until you reach Commonside.

Cross over and, after a short climb up the hill, you’re following a footpath on the edge of more woodland.

You’ll take a newly created diversion round Austerson Old Hall and arrive at a single-track road (Yarrangall Green), turn left and then turn left again when you get to the main Manley Road. Follow this busy-ish road uphill for 250 yards and then turn right down a track to Claim Farm. At the dog-leg bend to the right, take a 90-degree left turn, go through the gate and along the side of field.

Once you’ve crossed a track, bear right slightly and follow the overgrown path round the left-hand side of this field uphill towards a house in the distance. At the road, cross and head up Bushells Lane until you reach a staggered crossroads; turn left up Waterloo Lane.

At the end of Waterloo Lane, take a right turn. At the back end of a slight right-hand bend, you’ll need to take a track on the left and head up towards the ridge. Once you reach the next crossroads, take a left and follow the track past a covered reservoir until you reach Manley Road. Turn right and look for a gate built into the hedge approximately 250 yards on the left-hand side.

Take the path which cuts diagonally through a field until you reach the driveway to Higher Mickledale Farm. Go across the driveway to another path and to Simons Lane.

Turn left and walk up; you’ll see the car park on the right.

Georgia’s Insight to the World...

Positives after lockdown

In March 2020, when the borders of the world started to close, I’m sure that many of us didn’t realise the sheer scale of what we were about to enter. Especially in a small town like Sandbach, I couldn’t have anticipated that this kind of pandemic would even reach somewhere like this.

And yet, we all went into lockdown - and didn’t really know where to start.

First came the novelty. The Instagram stories of people working from home, doing online gym classes, and filming the empty aisles of the supermarkets. Would we ever be able to easily buy toilet roll again? How long would this last- surely it couldn’t last longer than a month? Can I still go abroad this summer? But after a few weeks, the realities and challenges truly started to set in. Isolation has been so tough for so many, and there have been some true horrors to come out of recent months. But what I have also seen are some positives, different ways of thinking, that I think would be good to continue as we’re starting to ease out of the lockdown.

Attitude towards our planet- The smog has cleared over Delhi, the once murky waters of Venice are now clear, and the skies are bluer than ever before. Less air travel, less cars on the road and more appreciation for the world that is on our doorstep could not have happened at such a pace without this halt to the world we knew.

Community spirit- At a time such as this, we soon came to realise that physical distance from each other does not mean we have to lose connections. Ultimately, we all should have been checking in on our elderly neighbours and relatives, showing our appreciation to our supermarket workers, cleaners and binmen, and sticking together when times got rough even before the pandemic. But often, life got in the way.

Ways of working- In March, many companies got thrown into the abyss and quickly sent their staff laptops, unsure how it would work moving forwards. Now, many organisations will continue to offer flexible options - which could transform the lives of many with care obligations, and things to juggle around their day job. Many companies have learnt to trust their staff - as they pulled through when times got tough, and are now shaping their return to be better than before.

Whilst it’s pretty well known that this pandemic has been catastrophic, I challenge you to try and come up with a few positive points of your own from this time. It may be a difficult start to the decade, but this could be a moment to create positive changes moving forward - and ensure this is not simply a time of reversing back to who we were.

Beetroot and Feta Salad This delicious seasonal salad is perfect as an accompaniment for your barbecue and is quick and easy to make. The shallots give a more delicate flavour than onions. If you can’t find red wine vinegar, balsamic will do the job too. This recipe is suitable for vegetarians and serves 4.

INGREDIENTS: 4 tbsp olive oil 1 shallot, finely chopped 1 garlic clove, sliced 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary, roughly chopped 8 small beetroot, cooked and quartered bag of mixed salad leaves 4 tbsp red wine vinegar 300g feta cheese, cut into cubes salt and freshly ground black pepper to season METHOD 1. Heat half the olive oil in a pan, add the chopped shallot and the garlic and fry over a medium heat for 2 minutes until they are just beginning to turn golden.

2. Stir in the rosemary, then add the beetroot and stir gently over the heat for 3-4 minutes. Remove from the heat and allow to cool.

3. Remove the beetroot and transfer to a bowl with the salad leaves.

4. Stir the vinegar and the rest of the olive oil into the pan with the shallot and garlic, then pour over the salad as a dressing, tossing gently to mix and coat the leaves.

5. Add the cubed feta and season with a little salt and freshly ground black pepper just before serving.

77 Good vibrations as annual worm charming contest goes virtual! (words and pictures by Jonathan White)

The 41st (virtual) Willaston World Worm Charming Championship’ was organised by the Friends of Willaston School Association and took place on the afternoon of Saturday 27th June 2020.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic this year’s championship was a virtual event held in participants’ own gardens with wormers live-streaming their exploits via the Zoom video conferencing app.

Participants had 30 minutes to charm and collect as many worms as possible from a 2m x 2m plot.

A maximum of two wormers were allowed on the plot at any time but could swap with a maximum of two gillies during the half-hour period.

Techniques to agitate the soil included: waggling a garden fork, tapping a garden fork to cause vibrations in the ground, playing music, jumping up and down, and bouncing a ball!

He also sang and performed on his ukulele to entice worms with ‘There's A Worm At The Bottom Of The Garden’ and ‘Good Vibrations’ amongst others.

Kieran Mullan, MP for Crewe and Nantwich, competed under the team name The Parliament Charmers.

Enthusiastic and encouraging commentary during the worming was provided by Miss WakeÞeld of the Friends of Willaston School Association.

The team with the most charmed worms were the Brookshaw family from Willaston with an impressive 155 worms.

They competed with their daughters Emma, 11, and Olivia, 8, under the team name The Wizarding Worms.

Andrea’s AMMF Army – Fundraising update…

My name is Andrea and I run these little directories that you are reading, as many of you know I was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer in October 2015 called Cholangiocarcinoma (cancer of the bile duct). This cancer has one of the worst survival rates of all cancers.

There is only one charity here in the UK that offers help and support to people affected by this deadly cancer, called The AMMF Cholangiocarcinoma Cancer Charity. I have since made it my ongoing mission to raise much needed funds and awareness for them, along with my family and friends now nick named as -#AndreasAMMFArmy!

Latest fundraiser - 2.6 challenge 26th April 2020 Many well-known large charity events such as the London Marathon, along with lots of other major events, have had to be cancelled over the past 3 months because of COVID-19, and the current lockdown restrictions in place. The big named charities have literally seen their fundraising income disappear almost overnight, with the smaller charities fairing even worse. These smaller charities like The AMMF are really struggling right Chris, Andrea & Ben now and really will need all our help to get back on track, so they can continue the amazing work they do.

My youngest child Ben (aged 8), decided he would like to take part in the national 2.6 challenge, that was launched to help charities during the lockdown period. He decided his challenge would be to cycle 26km on the day that the London Marathon should have taken place.

Family and friends agreed to donate a small amount of money for every kilometre he completed.

Ben successfully completed all 26km and raised a huge £403 for The AMMF on the day, making us really proud in the process too!

Since November 2016, when I first started my fundraising mission, I have now raised over £65,000! Every penny raised has gone directly to the charity and helps fund valuable research into ways of trying to identify this deadly cancer earlier, and hopefully will help save more lives going forward!

The wheels are already in motion for my next big challenge which will involve a 1000km bike ride across Thailand, which is one of the worst places on the planet for the cancer I had called Cholangiocarcinoma!
