This worked for me and as long as I do not go for prolonged periods of time barefoot, I am absolutely fine.

Your Financial New Year A new year and a new start! If you have over-indulged over the Christmas period (both physically and financially), then this is the perfect time to plan your finances for the upcoming year. SANDBACH GYMNASTICS Sandbach Gymnastics History

Our first permanent facility was only 3000sq.ft. It was a leasehold facility based in Sandbach town centre located on Bradwall Rd. We trained there between 1991 - 2006. From this venue 2003 World Champion national team member Rebecca Mason and International gymnasts Charlotte Holdcroft and Nicole Watson were the leading lights from the club.

In 2006 we moved to Millbuck Way, our current location and another leasehold facility. This venue was 9000sq.ft., and a massive benefit to our club. From this venue we competed hundreds of gymnasts, boys and girls ages 5 - 21years. Additionally, national team member Charlie Fellows represented Great Britain at the Junior European Championships in 2014 and England International Pagan Brown kept the club on track.

Fully Refurbished 20,000sq. ft. Purpose Built Facility 2020 sees the biggest change in our club’s history. The extremely generous grant from the Denise Coates Foundation has made our ultimate dream come true. The funding has enabled the purchase and complete refurbishment of a 20,000sq. ft. facility, producing superb world class permanent facilities for gymnastics in Sandbach for decades to come.

The new gym has been fitted with the latest international standard equipment, including safety foam pits, trampolines, ballet bars and much more!!

We are now able to hold competitions, training camps as well as providing a weekly training service to the vast membership that this facility will attract.

The club will benefit over 1000 local children and adults weekly.

Spring your lawn back to life!

Spring brings promise of longer days, milder weather and life in full bloom. But what does that mean for your lawn?

Giving your house a spring clean is a popular activity this time of year and your garden deserves the same attention if you want it to look its best. When we do venture back outside, we are often faced with overgrown shrubbery and under-loved lawns, and bringing your garden back to life can seem like a daunting task. But it doesn’t have to be!

As the temperatures gets milder, now is the perfect time to give your lawn some much needed TLC to keep it healthy and weed free in the months ahead. Last year’s milder winter means that your lawn has probably continued growing all year and could have done with attention a little earlier than usual.

First things first, it pays to take care of any bare patches that may have appeared. The best way to deal with them is to carefully rake the patch and then sow some grass seeds mixed with a little top-soil. It’s important not to let the seeds dry out so remember to keep them well watered and you should see some sprouts appearing within a few days.

Grass needs as much direct sunlight as possible to stay healthy and green so raking up any dead leaves and twigs is another important job and can be a great way to get the kids involved and develop their ‘green thumbs’! As a rule of thumb, the first dry and sunny day in March is the ideal time to give your lawn its first cut of the year. Cutting the grass too short, too soon can attract unwanted weeds and moss so to avoid that happening, make sure you use the highest blade setting on your lawnmower.

Special fertilisers are available to use at this time of year to give grass the essential nutrients it needs to grow strong and give it a vibrant colour; these seasonal treatments have been specially developed to work in cooler temperatures. Spring weather conditions tend to result in a flourish of young weeds, and selecting a treatment that includes an herbicide can help to control broad-leaved weeds such as daisies, clovers, dandelions and buttercups.

Once you’ve carried out basic maintenance on your lawn, it pays to plan ahead to prevent all your hard work in the spring going to waste and to guarantee a beautiful lawn you can enjoy all summer long. Hotter weather and dry spells over the summer can lead to your lawn turning yellow and drying up. There are some really effective treatments out there that can help keep grass stay greener for longer, such as the Oasis treatment from local lawn care specialist GreenThumb. The surfactant attaches itself to the molecules in the soil to conserve any moisture, helping to reduce the amount of watering needed. Where soil type is mainly clay, which is common in the Middlewich, Winsford & Congleton areas, the amount of water needed to keep grass green can be reduced by up to 80% so you can spend less time watering and more time enjoying your lawn.

Dating for the over sixties...

More and more seniors are entering the dating game, with very few tools to handle this process in the electronic age. The monthly column is to help some people, describing pitfalls and safety, with a fair amount of humour from my own personal experiences. This month is all about dating websites. Finding the ideal dating site is a minefield, I liken it to finding the perfect handyman for home improvements (another project of mine, but that subject needs its own storyline). Sometimes a free site can work for you, but does an expensive subscription offer a higher success rate? Do you have plenty of time to dedicate to this, in which case being on multiple dating sites will broaden your search. For the over sixties, being on a general dating site means hours of sifting through profiles of much younger people, though most sites allow you to filter your search. It’s worth asking friends for recommendations, or even posting on local social media. I was shocked at some of the subscription rates, but most offer a short free trial and it is worth testing several. I can speak personally of two dating sites and encourage readers to add their own experiences of other sites. maturecheshiredating.co.uk This was my initial dating website....chosen because, yes, I live in Cheshire and I am mature, so thought a targeted site was the best option. Although this site sounds like it is just for Cheshire residents, you can filter your search on distance from your town, which can include other counties. If you are not lucky enough to live in the beautiful county of Cheshire, replace Cheshire with your own county in the weblink. I set up my profile (that subject will be covered in my next article), was able to see profiles of other members and even send one message to each person who sounded interesting, all at no cost. But (isn’t there always a but?), I couldn’t read any messages sent to me unless I subscribed, which was less than helpful, so I chose a one-month membership at a discounted rate to test the waters. Of course, always remember to cancel a short membership or it rolls into the next payment, without any discount. lumenapp.com This dating site covers all of the U.K., but it states it is specifically for the over 50’s. Remember I told you to seek recommendations from friends? Well, my cousin Karen gave me this one, because a friend of hers found love here. Again, I set up my profile free but (and this is a good but), I can send up to six messages a day for free and can actually read replies! There are additional subscription options, such as seeing who showed an interest in your profile, something that the maturecheshiredating site offers for free, but I personally have found it unnecessary (unless you are a serial message addict who will go over the six message daily allowance). There are some rating websites for all the top dating sites, which I didn’t use, preferring to test them personally without any preconceived impressions.

Updates from The Office of Police & Crime Commissioner for Cheshire….

Online service gives sexual abuse survivors confidence to seek support

People who have experienced sexual abuse in Cheshire are now more likely to access support thanks to a new anonymous online support service.

Launched last autumn by Chester Sexual Centre Manager Alison Breadon and Abuse Support Service with funding from PCC David Keane during the PCC’s Cheshire’s police and crime commissioner, visit to the centre.

Survivors Lifechat is providing confidential online support to survivors of rape and sexual violence across Cheshire two evenings a week.

Every Monday and Wednesday between 6pm-8pm, survivors are able to log onto the service’s website and chat anonymously to a trained support worker who will offer emotional support, information and sign-posting to relevant services.

The service has now been open for 20 sessions and 28 volunteers have received specialist training to deliver the online support.

Alison Breadon, centre manager of Chester Sexual Abuse Support Service, said: “We’re finding that online services are preferred by a wide range of people; it can be hard to speak on the phone - text or typing is sometimes easier and more anonymous.

“On our first evening, a survivor contacted us for help and told us that she would not have contacted us that night if it wasn’t for the LiveChat service. Another survivor said it’s really easy to access the service on the go without the pressure of talking to someone face-to-face.”

PCC David Keane recently visited the service to see the difference it’s making to survivors across Cheshire.

He said: “This is a fantastic service which provides anybody experiencing abuse with the information they need to help them make safe decisions.

Scrambled Egg and Bacon Baskets These egg and bacon baskets are a fun way of turning a breakfast favourite into a truly tasty snack or dinner. Serves 4.

INGREDIENTS 4 large squares slices white bread, crust removed olive oil for brushing 4 rind rashes of smoked back bacon 4 large eggs 15ml snipped fresh chives 15g lightly salted butter METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 190C/Gas Mark 5.

2. Using a rolling pin, roll each slice of bread very flatly then lightly brush each side with a little oil. 3. Press each bread piece into a deep sided muffin pan or a mini pudding basin at an angle so that the bread forms a flower shape.

4. Cook in the preheated oven for 5 - 8 minutes or until crisp, lightly browned and the baskets holds its shape when lifted from the pan.

5. Meanwhile, preheat the grill to medium and then cook the bacon for 3 - 5 minutes or until thoroughly cooked. Then using a pair of scissors cut each rasher into small dices.

6. Beat the eggs together with the chives in a jug. Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat until foaming, then add the egg mixture and snipped bacon using a wooden spoon, cook, stirring constantly for approximately 3 - 5 minutes or until lightly scrambled. Taste and season if necessary.

7. Place the bread baskets on serving plates then divide the egg and bacon mixture between the baskets and serve immediately. Do not leave these to stand for long as the bread will go soggy.

TRAVEL- 5 things you probably.... ......didn’t know about the Canary Islands A group of tiny rocks in the Atlantic, a stone’s throw from the North West African coast, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Graciosa, La Gomera, and La Palma are blessed with a wonderfully warm year-round climate, don’t suffer the same ferocious weather systems as many tropical winter sun destinations can, and have long been at the end of direct flights from the most U.K. airports. Ideal options for those after heat, beaches, and excellent fish, whilst all this may be quite obvious here are five other things you probably didn’t know about the Canary Islands.

1. Canaries have nothing to do with it The name ‘canary’ couldn’t be less connected with the little yellow birds if it tried. In fact, ‘canaria’ comes from the Latin word for ‘dog’, with one age-old yarn suggesting that the first European settlers arrived to find large K9s inhabiting the island, hence the Christening. More likely, though, is that Romans named seals ‘sea dogs’, and these islands used to be home to a large population of the mammals, with the rest now history.

2. The highest point in Spain is here When people talk about the Spanish mountains they immediately think of the Pyrenees range, separating Spain from France. That may be true for the mainland, but in fact the highest peak in all of Spain’s territories is on Tenerife. El Teide stretches up 3,718m, towering above the tiny island to offer panoramic views and some incredible climbing challenges. You’ll also find the largest collection of astronomical telescopes in the world here too, just in case stargazing takes your fancy.

3. Franco’s fascists came from here Perhaps not the proudest moment in the region’s history, Francisco Franco was the General Commandant of the Canaries, stationed in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. From there he began devising the revolution that would see mainland Spain descend into civil war, dividing a nation and leaving behind a legacy of heartache, bloodshed and ruthless battles.

4. There’s a little bit of the Canaries in Texas The city of San Antonio, Texas, famous for the Alamo amongst other things (including the Spurs basketball team) was actually founded by people from the Canary Islands, who would go on to fight shoulder to shoulder with luminaries such as Jim Bowie and Davy Crocket. Incidentally (or not), Sao Paulo, Brazil, was also founded by someone from Tenerife. Perhaps ironically, both San Antonio and Sao Paulo are now individually (far) more populated than all the Canary Islands combined.

5. People talk by whistling La Gomera is home to a particularly curious language known as Silbo Gomero, which involves whistling rather that actually speaking words. In the 20th Century, as radio and telecommunications grew in popularity and accessibility, the musical dialect was in danger of dying out completely, so the local government introduced lessons in schools. As of 2009 it was on the UNESCO list as a ‘Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity’. No, we didn’t know that list existed either.

5 Step By Step Instructions‌ 1. Lay the fabric flat and decide on what kind of size you would like your bag to be, cut out and attach with pins any decorative ribbon and buttons.(pic 2) 2. At the top of the bag make a small hem on the wrong side of the fabric, then stitch. (pic 3) 3. Sew on all of the decorative items and also the bag handles, i used some lovely thick ribbon for the handles, or you can make handles from the same fabric by cutting a long strip and folding the two sides together and stitch to secure. When attaching the handles i sewed over the ribbon & bag several times to secure. (pic 4) 4. Once all the decoration is complete and the handles on, sew up the bottom and the side seams, press out the seams and then press the bag.

Georgia’s Insight to the World...

New Year’s Resolutions

Starting the year with a New Year’s Resolution is the reality for millions of people worldwide hoping to exercise more, eat healthier or become more productive. However, with the majority of us failing to actually achieve them, the question becomes why. Do we forget, or simply give up?

This isn’t just a new year but a new decade, so I thought I’d make some effort to encourage more positive and effective resolutions.

Exercise more… Try Sandbach Health and Fitness, with options for a free gym pass and monthly subscriptions starting from £25! Or, give the free app ‘One You Couch to 5k’ a go for a great way to track your progress in running, in a way that’s accessible for complete beginners.

Eat better… It’s Veganuary! Eating less meat reduces risk of cancer, lowers cholesterol and can aid weight loss. Greggs have released a new Steak Bake to add to their vegan range, Wetherspoons have multiple vegan options and even KFC have released a Vegan burger! It’s the perfect time of the year to try new things, and see if these options help aid a healthier diet.

Even just a ‘Meat free Monday’ can help our health, and the environment at the same time.

Become more productive… This isn’t just about cramming more menial tasks into the day, this is about using our time effectively to fit in more opportunities for personal growth!

As somebody who used to read a lot, I found that I struggled to fit in the time to read like I used to be able to with a full working week. However, I’ve managed to combat this by downloading Audible, meaning that I can get my reading done while commuting or getting other things done. This has hopefully set me on my way to accomplishing my ‘read one book a month’ goal for 2020!

I tend to be a bit cynical when it comes to New Year’s Resolutions, but I do believe that they can be effective in encouraging us to adapt in a positive sense. Instead of using them as an opportunity to put ourselves down, make 2020 the year to focus on our passions, be kind to others, and try new things. Maybe even the new Greggs steak bake…

Andrea’s AMMF Army to scale new heights

Cancer survivor Andrea Sheardown has been relentless in her fundraising for the AMMF cholangiocarcinoma charity.

Having battled the deadly cholangiocarcinoma bile duct cancer of the liver, Andrea was initially given just weeks to live at the end of 2015.

Somehow, she has deÞed the odds and is still here with us today.

Ever since, she has made it her mission to raise as much money and awareness as possible for AMMF, the only UK charity dedicated to helping to Þnd a cure for this cancer.

Since her fundraising challenges began, Andrea and her ‘AMMF Army’ of supporters have raised almost £60,000.

Andrea explained: “I’ve done the three peaks in the middle of winter after my chemotherapy Þnished, I then climbed Kilimanjaro in February 2018, cycled from Vietnam to Cambodia in February 2019.

“On 13th February, I will attempt to climb to Kala Patthar - just above Everest Base Camp - with my 16 year old son, my husband, my sister and 11 other loyal friends.”

Nicknamed #AndreasAMMFArmy the intrepid group will embark upon the challenge in one of the coldest months and they will be taking the AMMF’s new charity mascot ‘Hope Bear’ with them.

Andrea said: “Please take a look at my story and let me know if you can share my story to help others realise that life can go on after a deadly cancer diagnosis and that you can still have dreams and push boundaries that you never thought off before!”

Andrea’s AMMF Army – Fundraising update…

My name is Andrea and I run these little directories that you are reading, as many of you know I was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer in October 2015 called Cholangiocarcinoma (cancer of the bile duct). This cancer has one of the worst survival rates of all cancers. There is only one charity here in the UK that offers help and support to people affected by this deadly cancer, called The AMMF Cholangiocarcinoma Cancer Charity. I have since made it my ongoing mission to raise much needed funds and awareness for them, along with my family and friends now nick named as #AndreasAMMFArmy!

Since November 2016, we have organised lots of local fundraising events, including Charity Ladies Nights, climbing The Three Peaks, Firewalking, a Mad Hatters Cycle Tea Party, Letters to Santa, Bag Packs and running a regular charity stall at Sandbach Rock & Pop festival. We have also done some more significant challenges – climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, and more recently cycling over 450km from Vietnam – Cambodia!

Sandbach Rugby kindly allowed The AMMF cancer charity to be match ball sponsors at the 1st team home game against Nuneaton. We were joined by family and friends along with local rugby supporters, who all kindly supported our event on the day. Huge thanks also go to Symphony Hospitality for providing us the food at a discounted rate too and all the lovely people who donated raffle prizes. The Lunch and raffle helped raise an amazing £1319 on the day which is absolutely fantastic and the 1st team won 38-13!

The Next Big Challenge – Everest Base Camp February 2020!

By the time you are reading this our Everest Base Camp adventure would have started! On the 13th February we fly to Kathmandu to start our epic adventure and hope to climb just beyond Everest Base Camp to Kala Patthar – a height of 5,645 m (18,519 ft)!
