6 Dear Readers - Welcome to the latest edition! I never thought that just a few days after getting back from my Everest Base Camp Challenge at the end of February, our world would have changed so much in such a short space of time! We landed back into the UK on the 29th February and within days of this they had closed Everest, making us one of only a few groups to be able to take on the Everest Base Camp challenge this year!

I would like to send all my best wishes to you and your families, and I really hope you and your loved ones have managed to stay safe and well over the past few weeks. I took the hard decision not to produce my May editions that should have gone out in April, due to the COVID-19 restrictions in place. Before printing this issue, I did liaise and take advice from the local authorities and Cheshire Police.

Not everyone reading our magazines has access to the internet/social media, so we hope we can communicate important information through these magazines too.

This edition also marks the 14th Anniversary of my magazines, something I am very proud of too, hopefully my business along with other small businesses can continue to grow and flourish after the past few weeks. Sandbach Town Council understands people are worried, however we are determined to ensure that those on the Government lists as High Risk or Extremely Vulnerable are receiving the community support they need, especially where friends and family are not living locally or able to assist.

There has been an outpouring of public support and care for each other across Cheshire East and throughout Sandbach as Covid-19 (Coronavirus) continues to spread. Sandbach Town Council is working closely with Cheshire East Council to assist volunteers in finding people to help.

There are many tasks which we take for granted, that at risk residents are unable to do. Simple things, which include: shopping for essential goods, collecting medication and dog walking to name a few, have been difficult and in some cases impossible.

It is vitally important that we do all we can to help those in our communities who are likely to become more isolated and vulnerable as restrictions continue, of equal importance is that we have a team of willing volunteers to call upon.

Summer 2020 Well we are still here, the sun is shining (mostly) and we are still indoors (mostly). For some of us this has been an exceedingly difficult time, both financially and with the real human cost of the pandemic.

Keep your data safe Everything you own breaks.Your washing machine, your lawnmower, your car, your television, your coffee machine. Everything gets old and dies. Computers are not exempt. One day you will turn it on and it will refuse to boot. Or there will be some distressing noises from the hard drive inside and your lifetime’s photos will have disappeared.

I am frequently contacted by people to whom this has happened, and they all say two things: “It worked yesterday!” and “No, I haven’t made any backups.”

Let me tell you an immutable law: any file you only have one copy of, you will lose. At some time the drive it resides on will break and you won’t get it back.

It is really very simple: make at least three copies (backups) ofall your irreplaceable files: • one on your computer, the primary copy • one on a hard drive or memory stick that you keep at home • one that is ‘offsite’, i.e. not where it could be stolen or lost in a fire at the same time as your computer.

That off-site copy might be at a friend’s or a ‘cloud’ copy like Microsoft OneDrive or Google Drive – which have the advantage ofrunning all the time. Either way, you have one copy to hand for convenience and a ‘backup backup’ in case ofdisaster.

What do I need?

Firstly, you need something to copy onto.The cheapest option is an external drive, also called a USB drive. A better option is a Network Attached Storage device (NAS) like the one pictured right, which you link to your network and is always available, and is a good option ifyou have more than one computer in the house.

Secondly, don’t rely on manual copies as you won’t remember or things will go wrong. Get a proper backup program that makes the backups to a schedule and reminds you ifit needs that USB drive to be plugged in.

EaseUS Todo Backup Free is simple and reliable, but there are many offerings out there. Such a program will also make system backups, which are essential, different from file backups and will let you recover your machine ifit won’t even boot up.

Thirdly, I recommend professional advice to get you started the right way and give you peace ofmind.

And finally, don’t forget your other devices too. Phones and tablets are easily lost or broken.

Looking After Your Car During Lockdown Keeping your battery healthy, your tyres inflated and giving your car a thorough clean could make all the difference when isolation measures are finally lifted. Here are some tips on how to maintain your car during the lockdown.

Try to avoid a flat battery The best way to make sure your car makes it through long-term storage or reduced usage is to keep its battery healthy. Using a battery conditioner, or trickle charger, is the most effective way to do this. It will keep immobilisers and other energysapping components from draining your battery completely.

Just keep in mind that using these devices could be impractical if your car is parked on the street as you may need to drape cables across the pavement, which can become a tripping hazard for passers-by.

What’s happening at Sandbach School during the Covid-19 lockdown?

Staff at Sandbach School have not allowed the Covid-19 lockdown and the government suspension of education as a cue to take a break from teaching or from supporting their students and the community. As Stuart Dodds, Deputy Headteacher, says, “We have never accepted that school has closed, our staff have been brilliant in setting work for our students at home and in communicating with parents. We also have about 60 students, mostly children of key workers, attending school each day. It’s important that despite the lockdown we still keep our school community connected.”

At the start of the lockdown the school set work online for all students in year 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12. The priority was to make sure that all students had meaningful work to complete at home and to get some form or routine to each child’s day. The pastoral team have tried to keep in contact with all students and their parents using a variety of means from phone calls, text messaging and social media. A huge emphasis has been placed on celebrating the efforts and achievements of students through postcards home and ‘shout outs’ on twitter.

Mr Dodds added “In terms of ‘live’ lessons using platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams our initial focus has been providing lessons and work for our exam groups in years 12 and 10 but as the lockdown has continued we are moving to provide more interactive support for the other year groups.”

Feedback from students and parents has praised the quality of the learning provided and staff have acted upon suggestions from students for improving lessons.

The school has supported its community in other ways: Inter-House competition has been adapted to include weekly challenges and the rivalry is fierce but good natured.

The Design and Technology department at Sandbach School has gone the extra mile to manufacture visors to help protect NHS and other care workers during the pandemic. The team has manufactured more 2000 visors that have been distributed to Leighton Hospital, care homes in and around Sandbach, GP practices in Sandbach, Crewe, Nantwich, Knutsford and Wilmslow and other health care professional such as NHS physios and midwives.

Paul Bowyer, Curriculum Leader of Design and Technology explained how it came about: “A friend of mine is an anaesthetist at Leighton Hospital in the intensive care unit and mentioned how short they were of PPE, particularly visors.

We’re part of a D&T Teachers network and saw that some teachers had started to make visors so we got in touch, they sent a copy of the CAD files and we began to make the visors using the materials we had in the department.”

Spring brings promise of longer days, milder weather and life in full bloom. But what does that mean for your lawn?

Giving your house a spring clean is a popular activity this time of year and your garden deserves the same attention if you want it to look its best. When we do venture back outside, we are often faced with overgrown shrubbery and under-loved lawns, and bringing your garden back to life can seem like a daunting task. But it doesn’t have to be!

As the temperatures gets milder, now is the perfect time to give your lawn some much needed TLC to keep it healthy and weed free in the months ahead. Last year’s milder winter means that your lawn has probably continued growing all year and could have done with attention a little earlier than usual.

First things first, it pays to take care of any bare patches that may have appeared. The best way to deal with them is to carefully rake the patch and then sow some grass seeds mixed with a little top-soil. It’s important not to let the seeds dry out so remember to keep them well watered and you should see some sprouts appearing within a few days.

Grass needs as much direct sunlight as possible to stay healthy and green so raking up any dead leaves and twigs is another important job and can be a great way to get the kids involved and develop their ‘green thumbs’! As a rule of thumb, the first dry and sunny day in March is the ideal time to give your lawn its first cut of the year. Cutting the grass too short, too soon can attract unwanted weeds and moss so to avoid that happening, make sure you use the highest blade setting on your lawnmower.

Special fertilisers are available to use at this time of year to give grass the essential nutrients it needs to grow strong and give it a vibrant colour; these seasonal treatments have been specially developed to work in cooler temperatures. Spring weather conditions tend to result in a flourish of young weeds, and selecting a treatment that includes an herbicide can help to control broad-leaved weeds such as daisies, clovers, dandelions and buttercups.

Once you’ve carried out basic maintenance on your lawn, it pays to plan ahead to prevent all your hard work in the spring going to waste and to guarantee a beautiful lawn you can enjoy all summer long. Hotter weather and dry spells over the summer can lead to your lawn turning yellow and drying up. There are some really effective treatments out there that can help keep grass stay greener for longer, such as the Oasis treatment from local lawn care specialist GreenThumb. The surfactant attaches itself to the molecules in the soil to conserve any moisture, helping to reduce the amount of watering needed. Dating for the over sixties...

More and more seniors are entering the dating game, with very few tools to handle this process in the electronic age. My monthly column is to help some people, describing pitfalls and safety, with a fair amount of humour from my own personal experiences. This month is all about dating while maintaining social distancing. It is not a problem limited to silver surfers, as many younger people will agree. Would also love to hear from anyone who has a dating story to share, be it good, bad or funny.

Several weeks ago life was much easier. Whether you were meeting people online or at social gatherings, it is no longer possible to plan a date, be it a coffee, dinner or even a movie. That isn’t true, we just need to get a little more creative. In fact, dating while separate allows us to slowly get to know that person at their best and worst, solidifying a relationship or making you realise they are not the one.

Coffee date Plan several coffee dates, with each one having a different theme, such as what you watched on the television last night, your most memorable holiday destination etc. This is perfect for people who aren’t comfortable chatting on a video link, as it can be as simple as a telephone call. Limit each coffee date to 30 minutes, you will be amazed at how much you learn about the other person in that time.

Dinner date Let’s have some fun with food, learning more about the other person suggest you each make a dinner that is your favourite, then share it online or email a photo or describe on the telephone. Some people don’t want to say what is their favourite food in person, in case they turn off their date, but actually creating a meal and then sharing it online can give each other an insight into what they really like....good for when you can actually go out for a meal.

Movie night Take it in turns to choose a movie or TV show to watch...it can be one on television or found on Netflix or a similar channel. I have done this successfully before the lockdown with a boyfriend.....we actually had a video link, watched the movie and chatted during commercial breaks!

Be spontaneous Want to make an impression on someone you would like to know more? Every time you plan a virtual date, why not send them a gift (I know that would impress me). Coffee dates could include a mug or a box of biscuits, for a dinner date send a bottle of wine or box of chocolates, and a movie night would be great with a gift of popcorn selection of sweets.

What is accomplished with these virtual dates? Well, if you hate Eastenders and find out it is their favourite show, is that a deal breaker? They like rare steak and you are a vegetarian could be an impossible combination. But perhaps you can learn more about the other person during these difficult times, while in your own homes and separate, than weeks of dating normally. Try it and let me know.

Stay Connected During Coronavirus

Here is a list of free simple-to-use apps and services you can use to help maintain contact with the ones you love and care about no matter how close or far away they are.

Zoom - Few people had even heard of Zoom before coronavirus.

Maybe some of you used it to have teleconferences at work, but surely few of us were using it to stay in touch with family and friends. But now it’s become on of the go-to sources for all kinds of online classes, happy hours, social opps, telemedicine and, yes, meetings. And it’s free to download a Zoom Meetings license to your smartphone or computer, and that gives you access to an unlimited number of video meetings (which can support up to 100 people), and private and group chats, you know, in case you need all of that.

FaceTime - Have an iPhone, iPad or Mac computer? You can use Apple’s built-in FaceTime app to video chat with any of your contacts (as long as they also use the Apple platform).

While it’s primarily for video chatting, you also can use it to make audio calls if you’re in a spot that has a WiFi or data connection but a poor phone signal. Group FaceTime even allows you to chat with up to 32 people at once and can be used with almost all iOS devices with iOS 12 installed.

Google Duo/Hangouts - You can use the Google Duo app on your Android phone, iOS smartphone, tablet or computer to video chat with up to eight of your friends at a time. It uses your phone number and accesses your phone’s contacts list to let you start creating groups. Among its most unique features: Knock Knock, which gives users a preview of the person calling by firing up the camera on the other end of the line.

Whereas Google Duo is meant to be much more specialized, Google Hangouts is ideal to use on desktops. It supports messaging and group chats, and has voice and video chat capabilities. It’s built into Google+, Gmail, YouTube and Google Voice, and the app is compatible on iOS, Android and online.

Marco Polo - This easy-to-use app combines the best of texting, social media and video chats on one platform. If you want to video chat with someone — but can’t do so in real time because they have a busy work schedule or live in another time zone — Marco Polo is the app for you. You can send video messages to individuals or groups that they can watch and respond to at their leisure. Marco Polo saves all your video messages — and doesn’t limit your video time — so you can revisit past conversations. You also can add fun filters and voice effects to give your friends on the other end of the videos a laugh.

Skype - Skype messaging, as well as video and audio calling, was created for both oneon-one and group conversations, and you can use it on your mobile phone; PCs and Macs; Xboxes and Alexa. It’s free to send messages, and to conduct audio and video calls with groups of up to 50 people (paying a nominal fee also enables you to call mobile and landline phones or send online text messages). Skype even lets you record, save and share your video calls, and offers live captions and subtitles. It’s free to download (for iOS, Android, Windows and Mac) and easy to use. Facebook Messenger- More than 1 billion people have Facebook accounts, so theoretically you can use the Facebook Messenger app to connect with any of them. You can send instant messages, photos or videos, stickers, GIF files, emojis and more. You also can make free WiFi video calls from almost anywhere. Using Facebook Messenger is like using any other instant-messaging app. Simply click or tap on the compose button, select the individual(s) you would like to chat with and then start typing.

Netflix Party - If you want to have movie night with the girls, you still can using Netflix Party.

It’s a free Chrome browser extension you download on your computer. Once you’ve done that, you just navigate Netflix and pick the movie or TV show you want to watch. To invite friends to join your party, pause your show after it loads and click the red “NP” button. That will give you a unique link to send your friends so they can join your “room.” Then you can watch your movie or TV show together — and even talk about it using the platform’s chat tool.

Watch2gether - If you don’t have Netflix but still want to hang out with friends and watch videos online, Watch2gether lets you do just that. Head to the website and just “create a room” (no registration is required) and start watching video content from sources like YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion and SoundCloud. You can also sign up for free and create an online nickname. That way you can start inviting friends to rooms you can create, or join rooms that someone else has started.

Updates from The Office of Police & Crime Commissioner for Cheshire….

Funding available for victims services during coronavirus pandemic

Support services in Cheshire are being invited to bid for funding to support victims and survivors of domestic abuse and sexual violence and vulnerable children and their families through the COVID-19 pandemic.

PCC David Keane is launching the fund in Cheshire as part of a package of £76 million funding allocated by the Ministry of Justice nationally.

The funding will be ring-fenced for COVID-19 related emergency funding, and then ringfenced again for spend on each of the three areas of need listed below. Funds allocated for the three different types of services cannot be moved between pots. These funds will be distributed by PCCs as follows: - Domestic abuse services that are already commissioned by PCCs £10m.

- Sexual violence services that are already commissioned by PCCs and those that are not currently funded by PCCs £5m.

- Domestic abuse services that are not currently commissioned by PCCs £5m The funding has been put in place to meet the additional costs registered charities or social enterprises have incurred or will incur whilst adapting their services during the pandemic, and to cope with demand increases resulting from it, during this time period.

Any victims’ support service which is supporting victims through these traumas can apply for the funding, including those who are already commissioned by the PCC to provide services in Cheshire.

The Commissioner’s office is now asking for expressions of interest for organisations who would like to apply for the funding.

Funding can be used to address costs associated with COVID-19 from 24 March 2020 – the first day of lockdown.

PCC David Keane said: “The coronavirus pandemic has put additional demand on some of our most vital victims’ services.

“It has also created a situation where many victims have been trapped in their homes with their abusers during lockdown, creating an impossible situation with little means of escape.

“This funding will allow our support services to recoup some of the costs occurred by adapting their services during the pandemic as well as giving them the opportunity to provide additional support to victims over the next few months.”

Applicants must be careful not to apply for funding for the same activity via differing funding streams. Any applications will be considered by the PCC and recommendations

for funding awards made to the Ministry of Justice based on what is determined to be the most critical areas of need for vulnerable victims during this period.

You will need

Tie Dye kit Plastic gloves Elastic bands White T-shirt 4 Step By Step Instructions…

Wet the T-shirt all over to start with, and then fold the T-shirt depending on what design you would like.

(Pic 1)For the stripe effect t-shirt look at image A, you need to fold the T-shirt from the bottom in a consertiner fold. For a swirl effect look at diagram B, you need to start in the middle of the T-shirt and twist it so it becomes one big swirl.

(Pic 2)Once you have folded your t-shirt you need to secure with elastic bands.

(Pic 3)Put your plastic gloves on and start to add a generous amount of dye to the folded T-shirt, we did a rainbow of colours, you need to make sure you apply enough so it sinks through the layers of the T-shirt.

Leave the T-shirt overnight so the Dye can adhere to the fabric.

Place your gloves back on and start to remove the elastic bands, you will then be able to see your fabulous creation, I would advise you wash your T-shirt before wearing.

WHY DOES YOUR LOCAL BUSINESS NEED MARKETING? There is only ONE reason: if people can’t see you then they’ll pick your competitor! Without customers, your business would not survive.

To attract and retain customers, your business needs to understand the value of marketing. People are unlikely to simply walk into your business and buy something from you if they don’t know who you are, what you are selling and why they should choose you over the competition (who are already doing that marketing to get noticed).

Recognise: When someone first spots your advert it flags you up in their sights. They see you, take a quick look and then most likely move on.

Read: The second time someone spots you they pay more attention – they read what you’ve got to offer and understand you a bit more.

React: Generally when someone spots your advert for the third time they get a sense of déjà vu. But even though the process of recognition has started, 7 they may like what you’ve got to offer, the timing may not be right. Other priorities such as a boiler to replace, or Great Uncle Ray’s 100th birthday present to buy, might mean their cash is put to use elsewhere. At this stage however, you are on their radar.

Remember: While your marketing communications are important to you, this isn’t always so with your prospects even if they specifically requested them. They may lose or misplace them, throw them away, accidentally deleted them or spilt their coffee on it. There may also be the slim possibility that you haven’t encouraged them to take immediate action. So, to help them remember, the key weapon to your marketing success now is Repetition.

Repetition: Bear in mind that your marketing communications are in competition with so much other marketing, that to convert your prospects into buyers, you need to keep in touch with them, repeatedly, before they FREE Hand Online will finally be motivated to act. Creating a culture of kindness

“It’s Groundhog Day!”. Whether working, taking online classes, or using this time to unwind, it is easy to become disheartened by the monotony of the lockdown routine.

For many of us the days seem endless, made up of a series of repeated tasks. But, every now and again there are glimmers of hope. An act of kindness – whether it’s a 100-year old veteran doing laps of his garden for the NHS, a teenager using his spare time to create medical grade visors, or simply someone checking in on a friend, these are moments which stick out, and hold more gravity than ever.

Being Kind to Yourself Lockdown has brought out many responses from people – there’s everything from fitness fanatics to avid bakers and new-found authors, all using this time to reinvent themselves and hone new skills. Whatever your situation, there is this social pressure to react to the pandemic in a certain way. Internalising this pressure makes it hard to be kind to yourself, and then spread kindness to others. We are often quick to reassure others of their worth at such a time of distress, yet neglect giving ourselves the same courtesy.

Check in on People From this pandemic has emerged a plethora of different ways we can connect and be kind to each other. Almost every social occasion now has a virtual alternative, including birthday parties, dates, pub quizzes and coffee chats. It’s important that we try not to miss out on social events we would have otherwise had, making sure much of the time we would have spent connecting with others is maintained.

It’s all about the ‘moments’ Being kinder is not about a radical transformation, where we become somebody who always radiates positivity. Instead, it is about the moments. When we ask somebody how they’re doing, genuinely because we care about the response. When we offer someone a helping hand, not just because we feel like it’s expected. If repeated enough, these become habits and inspire others to do the same. These steps, however small they may seem, are steps towards creating a culture of kindness.

If there is a positive message from Groundhog Day, it’s that even with the same day over and over, there is the potential to become better.

Barbecued Salmon With Coriander This is the taste of summer - smoky salmon combined with the fresh flavours of honey, lime, garlic and loads of coriander. Serves 4.

INGREDIENTS * 1 bunch chopped coriander * 2 cloves garlic, chopped * 400g honey * Juice of one lime * 4 salmon steaks * salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste METHOD 1. Mix coriander, garlic, honey and lime juice in a small saucepan over medium-low heat.

2. Heat until the honey is easily stirred, take off heat and let cool slightly.

3. Put salmon steaks in a baking dish and season with salt and pepper.

4. Pour marinade over salmon, cover, and refrigerate 10 minutes.

5. Preheat barbecue to medium high heat and lightly oil grill rack.

6. Cook for five to eight minutes each side, or until fish is easily flaked.

81 Congleton Town Mayor 2020/21

At Congleton Town CouncilÕs Þrst virtual council meeting (on Thursday 28th May) it was decided that the present town mayor and deputy town mayor will remain the same until May 2021.

Cllr Sally Ann Holland will stay on as town mayor, and Cllr Denis Murphy as deputy town mayor.

Also continuing into the new civic year will be Dave Holland as the mayorÕs consort, Eloise Williams from Congleton West Rangers Unit as the mayorÕs cadet and Rev Andrew Lindley as the mayorÕs chaplain,

Deputy mayor Cllr Denis Murphy appointed Joan Myatt as his donsort for 2019/20 and this will also remain the same through to May 2021.

Mayor Cllr Sally Ann Holland said: ÒI am honoured to be staying on as the mayor of Congleton for another year.

ÒSince the middle of March a lot of the civic events I would have attended or organised have had to be cancelled and so hopefully as we start to get back to a Ônew normalÕ these are events that I would like to progress with when safe to do so.

ÒI look forward in continuing to represent the town.Ó

Cllr Holland will still be raising funds for various Congleton-based charities, and this will predominately be Visyon and the League of Friends for Congleton and MacclesÞeld Hospital.

Andrea’s AMMF Army – Fundraising update…

My name is Andrea and I run these little directories that you are reading, as many of you know I was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer in October 2015 called Cholangiocarcinoma (cancer of the bile duct). This cancer has one of the worst survival rates of all cancers.

There is only one charity here in the UK that offers help and support to people affected by this deadly cancer, called The AMMF Cholangiocarcinoma Cancer Charity. I have since made it my ongoing mission to raise much needed funds and awareness for them, along with my family and friends now nick named as -#AndreasAMMFArmy!

Latest fundraiser - 2.6 challenge 26th April 2020 Many well-known large charity events such as the London Marathon, along with lots of other major events, have had to be cancelled over the past 3 months because of COVID-19, and the current lockdown restrictions in place. The big named charities have literally seen their fundraising income disappear almost overnight, with the smaller charities fairing even worse. These smaller charities like The AMMF are really struggling right Chris, Andrea & Ben now and really will need all our help to get back on track, so they can continue the amazing work they do.

My youngest child Ben (aged 8), decided he would like to take part in the national 2.6 challenge, that was launched to help charities during the lockdown period. He decided his challenge would be to cycle 26km on the day that the London Marathon should have taken place.

Family and friends agreed to donate a small amount of money for every kilometre he completed.

Ben successfully completed all 26km and raised a huge £403 for The AMMF on the day, making us really proud in the process too!

Since November 2016, when I first started my fundraising mission, I have now raised over £65,000! Every penny raised has gone directly to the charity and helps fund valuable research into ways of trying to identify this deadly cancer earlier, and hopefully will help save more lives going forward!

The wheels are already in motion for my next big challenge which will involve a 1000km bike ride across Thailand, which is one of the worst places on the planet for the cancer I had called Cholangiocarcinoma!
