I will be selling raffle tickets and fun festival merchandise amongst other things at ‘The Sandbach Rock & Pop festival’ at Sandbach Rugby Club on Saturday the 13th July. There will be live music all day from well-known tribute bands, lots of fantastic food and beverages available, with plenty of activities for the children throughout the day too. The Annual Northwich River Festival takes place on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th July 2019.

Dog lovers wanted!

Charity on the search for local dog lovers Hearing Dogs for Deaf People – a charity that trains clever dogs to help deaf people reconnect with life – is actively recruiting volunteers to help care for and train their adorable puppies and dogs in the Cheshire East area.

Imagine living life without your hearing. You can’t hear fire alarms in shops. You can’t hear a smoke alarm when your meal is burning. You can’t hear your baby crying in the night. You feel anxious, tired and incredibly lonely.

Hearing Dogs believes no deaf person should feel alone or disconnected from life.

Our dogs can be life-savers, both practically and emotionally. They alert their deaf partners to crucial sounds and they combat anxiety and loneliness. These highly trained dogs change their deaf partners’ lives by becoming their ears, listening out for and alerting them to important life-saving sounds on a daily basis.

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People receive no government funding and relies on its kind volunteers to continue changing the lives of deaf people. We are looking for local dog lovers who have the time to help care for and train one of our gorgeous puppies in their own home.

28 DAFT JOHN I’ve got a friend called Daft John. He is not at all daft and I have no idea why he has been burdened with that title but If I remember some people were joking about names and somehow it attached itself to him.

Truth be told Daft John should really be called Intelligent John, Articulate John or Very Clever John but once a name attaches itself to you it is hard to shake off.

Daft john knows so much about so many things. He knows about cars and how they work and their worth, he understands about construction and architecture, he is well travelled, he is a credible food critic and knows his meat and two veg!

He proclaims to understand women and maybe that is where he earned his nickname.

How can that be when even women don’t understand women!

A group of women appear on the TV calling themselves ‘The Real Housewives of Cheshire’!

What?! It appears to me they have all had more bodywork attention than the ‘Real Rolls Royce Models of Cheshire’. Not one would know what a tabard is!

I’m called Billy Nomates and I know why, it’s because I have no mates. I do have a couple but none who like me. Of course they pretend but I know. So how do we come to have nicknames and titles? For years I was called Wombat as in Willy Wombat and I had a pal called Ugly Pete despite him being a very handsome lad. Then there was Dougie the Druggie but he didn’t even smoke. Lanky was always a small guy whereas Titch was the tall guy. There was a boy in our school called Hopalong. You would imagine he was named after Hopalong Cassidy the famous cowboy, (Incidentally you can buy a Hopalong Cassidy watch on EBay) but no it was because he only had one leg and he simply hopped along.

He was frightened of horses so would never had made a cowboy. He was frightened of all animals so would never have made a vet either.

To be fair back in my day we didn’t have the sort of hate bullying name calling there is today. Today is nasty and with malice aforethought. There are those who would cut your emotional wrists if they had the chance.

We called people from ethnic minorities by the names no one dare speak but I do not know one person who back in the day meant anything derogatory.

It was a well-used phrase ‘Sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me’ and it stood us all in good stead.

Anyway back to Daft John. The truth is he is a very lovely kind man and some take advantage of his good nature. Constantly he helps the wrong people and for this reason I am going to rename him Jinxed John. Article provided by Billy No-mates Picture by Michael Troy 01606782402

Strawberry Shortcake This take on the American classic makes an impressive dessert and is easy to make. Serves 8.

INGREDIENTS: 250g self-raising flour • One tsp baking powder 75g unsalted butter, cut into small pieces Three tbsp caster sugar • One egg, beaten Four tbsp semi-skimmed milk Half tsp pure vanilla extract One tsp icing sugar 340g strawberries 90ml whipping cream • 85g Greek-style yoghurt METHOD: 1. Preheat oven to 220C, gas mark 7.

2. Sift flour and baking powder into a bowl. Rub in butter to crumb mixture. Stir in caster sugar and make a well in centre.

3. Mix egg, milk and vanilla extract and pour into dry ingredients.

4. Gradually stir dry ingredients into liquid, then bring together by hand to form a soft dough. Pat dough into a smooth ball and turn onto a floured surface.

5. Roll out dough into a 19cm round. Transfer to greased baking sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes until well risen and browned on top. Cool on wire rack.

6. Slice shortcake in half horizontally. Lift top layer off and place on a board.

7. Cut into eight equal wedges. Put bottom layer on serving plate.

8. Reserve eight strawberries, hull and thickly slice the rest. Whip cream into soft peaks. Stir yogurt until smooth, then fold into cream.

9. Spread cream mixture thickly over bottom shortcake layer and cover with sliced strawberries.

10. Put wedges on top of shortcake and sift with icing sugar. Slice each reserved strawberry lengthways, leaving slices attached to stalk and open to fan out. Place each fan on top of wedges.

Reasons to visit Greece in the cooler months The archetypal image of Greece is one of glaring sunshine bouncing off whitewashed buildings capped with blue roofs. But while that’s certainly easy to find, there’s far more to this sprawling nation than August hotspots.

Needless to say, summer will always be the most popular time to visit, but in many ways that’s one of the main reasons to consider a trip off-season. Unless you’re keen to experience searing temperatures that can, in a heat wave, reach the low 50s, from September onwards the Greek climate is far more accommodating and less likely to leave you wanting bed at 7pm. Add to this the fact that many of the main attractions, landmarks and points of interest will be nowhere near as busy, means it’s possible to get more out of historic palaces and ancient ruins, and you start to realise that it might well be a good idea to flock to one of the islands during autumn and winter. Although the flights are far less frequent and often a bit more expensive, don’t worry too much, as you’ll save more than the equivalent of transit in July, thanks to the cheaper hotels, apartments and B&Bs. There’s a common misconception that Greece is all about beaches and the remnants of a once-glorious civilization. This simply isn’t the case. With a culture that remains both unique and prevalent in almost all corners, some of the most picturesque villages in the world and fantastic countryside to explore, by coming here at a time of year that’s cooler, you’ll have a better chance of being able to escape the well-trodden paths and find yourself in a remote idyll.

Hiking routes are everywhere, and there’s no way you’re heading up that steep hill with the sun beating down. Although rainfall is more likely between October and April, for outdoor types this still won’t compare to the god-awful downpours we endure at home during a pleasant but challenging trek across the moors.

Put simply then, a trip to Greece out of peak season gives a different take on the country as a whole, accentuating how lush the stereotypically arid landscape can be, and gives ample opportunities to truly get involved with the locals, their customs and pastimes.

1.(pic 2) Measure 60cm in length across a piece of paper(or 2x30cm pieces if you only have A4 paper), and 15cm in height, I then drew with a ruler the spikes for the pineapple top/also cut out another piece of fabric 60cm in length and 30cm in height.

2. (pic 3) Trace around the pineapple shape onto double sided fabric, and also trace around the circular shape lid for the bottom of the bag.

3(pic 4) Sew the spikes together inside out leaving one side edge so it can be turned back through.

4.(pic 5 &6) Attach the circular shape to the bottom, you will have to gather the piece of fabric for the body of the pineapple to the base.

5. Sew the spike top to the bag, and either use a piece of ribbon to close the top of the bag, or sew a piece of ribbon with cord throughout to make a gathered bag closure.

Moo-ving in at Lyme Park

The sights - and sounds - of Scotland have come to North Cheshire, with the arrival of a dozen highland cattle at Lyme Park.

The initiative forms part of a major long-term conservation project for the National Trust, and these cattle will increase the diversity of grassland plants and wildlife across 1,400 acres of parkland.

Importantly, the cattle will also graze dry grass - in an effort to try to reduce the risk of Þre, such as the one that broke out around two months ago, destroying 15 hectares of moorland.

Conservationists are doing all they can to protect it, as the land is home to several species of bird such as lapwing, curlew and skylarks and mammals including red deer and hares.

Chris Dunkerley, lead ranger at Lyme, said: “Cattle have been grazed at Lyme seasonally in the past through agreements with local farmers, but this is the Þrst time that these distinctive, docile animals will be living in the park year-round.

“Unlike other breeds, they are perfectly adapted to the harsh winter conditions of the moorland area, which they will be roaming in alongside Lyme’s famous historic herd of red deer.”

The Lyme Park team will be working with a local farmer to manage the herd, or ‘fold’ as a group of highland cattle is known.

This small fold was purchased using a generous gift made by a local family in memory of a loved one.

The number of cattle is hoped to increase over the next few years via further purchases and a breeding programme in the park.

Andrea’s AMMF Army – Fundraising update…

My name is Andrea and I run these little directories that you are reading, as many of you know I was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer in October 2015 called Cholangiocarcinoma (cancer of the bile duct). This cancer has one of the worst survival rates of all cancers. The AMMF is the UK’s only Cholangiocarcinoma Cancer Charity, dedicated to tackling this devastating cancer on all fronts: providing information and support, campaigning to raise awareness, and encouraging and supporting research.

Over the past 3 years with the help of my family and friends, I have organized lots of fundraising events, from Charity Ladies Nights, climbing The Three Peaks in the middle of winter, Firewalking, a Mad Hatter Cycle Tea Party, letters to Santa and bag packing at Morrisons in Middlewich. Leading up to some bigger challenges – climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with my then 14 year old son in February 2018 and more recently, I have just returned (February 19) from my latest fundraising mission, which was cycling over 450km from Vietnam – Cambodia, with my 17-year-old daughter and 16 other fantastic friends, dubbed as Andreas AMMF Army!

to Everest Base Camp, this will be a big challenge to us all, as February is one of the colder months to do this. I’m very lucky to have my 16-year-old son Sam, my husband Chris and my sister Mandy Morgan joining me this time, along with 11 other loyal friends (Michelle Johnson, Andrew Suter, Anne Holdcroft, Marie Williams, Sharon Newton, Lisa Taylor, Dylan Hughes, David Wiley, Oly Rhodes, Erica Cordock & Neil Pollock). Many of these amazing friends have already been part of my previous trips, Michelle Johnson, who has joined me on every trip so far! We all self- fund our places on these trips, so all the money we raise along the way goes directly to the AMMF charity.

Since November 2016 when I started my fundraising campaign for this cancer charity, we have now raised over ÂŁ50,000! This has only been possible with the continued support from my family, friends and the generosity of the many local businesses that have regularly helped and supported many of my fundraising events.

Every penny raised has gone directly to the charity and helps fund valuable research into ways of trying to identify this deadly cancer earlier, and hopefully will help save more lives going forward!

BBC 1 - Myself, family members and some of my loyal AMMF army of friends have been involved in some filming for a BBC 1 documentary that will be aired soon. I feel very lucky to have been given the opportunity to share my story with others and hope it can give hope to others facing their own cancer battles too!
