Additionally, this individual oversees information technology and human resources programs that support a dedicated workforce of 150 who embrace a “nothing is impossible” attitude

This is a pivotal moment to join the organization as it celebrates a successful $72 million comprehensive fundraising campaign, exceeding its original goal by $12 million. Funds raised support SFH’s annual operating budget, program expansion and significant facilities improvements.

Mission

St. Francis House rebuilds lives by providing refuge and pathways to stability for adults experiencing homelessness and poverty – with a commitment to helping those it serves achieve renewed lives of dignity and self-determination.

As a growth-minded organization that continuously seeks opportunities to deepen its impact, SFH joins other like-minded organizations in tackling Boston’s housing shortage. In addition to a major renovation of its main shelter at 39 Boylston Street, SFH is collaborating on a project to construct a 19-story residential tower across the street that will have 126 units of affordable housing, 70 set aside for people leaving homelessness.

Celebrating 40 Years of Rebuilding Lives

Established 40 years ago in the heart of downtown Boston, the non-sectarian, nonprofit St Francis House steadily evolved from a simple bread line to a nationally recognized multi-service shelter for people experiencing poverty and homelessness Through the 1990s, SFH expanded its offerings, driven by a belief in the worth of every human being – and that when people have the right tools, meaningful change is possible. Significant initiatives included the Moving Ahead Program, aimed at employment readiness, and Next Step Housing, offering 56 supportive housing units.

The 2000s marked the beginning of tremendous, opportunistic growth under President and CEO Karen LaFrazia who has championed two multi-million comprehensive campaigns to improve and expand services, facilities and housing units She also addressed the COVID-19 pandemic head on with responsive adaptations to ensure safe, continual care, and a partnership with the City of Boston to address urgent sheltering needs

During LaFrazia’s 27-year continuing tenure, SFH has celebrated a number of “firsts.” Among these are the addition of the Carolyn Connors Women’s Center to serve the unique needs of female guests; the Room to Grow Recovery Support Center, the only one of its kind operating in a homeless shelter; Seeds of Change, the first and only dual-diagnosis treatment program in a day shelter supporting individuals with both cognitive and substance

use disorders; and the Union, a permanent supportive housing development for people who have experienced homelessness

Through innovations and leadership, SFH remains at the forefront of providing continuous, comprehensive, transformative care, from basic services to rehabilitative and housing support. As it begins its fifth decade, the organization continues its strategic path forward in addressing the root causes of homelessness through innovative, impactful holistic care and services.

Partnerships That Yield Results

Philanthropy, including campaigns like the five-year Pathways campaign, makes up 45% of operating revenue and drives strategic growth in new and enhanced programming, services and facility renovations.

As a vital partner in addressing Boston’s affordable housing shortage, SFH is partnering with the Planning Office for Urban Affairs on construction of a new 19-story residential tower at 41 LaGrange Street, adjacent to SFH’s administrative building in downtown Boston This new building – supported by the State, City and corporate, foundation and individual donors – will provide much needed permanent supportive housing for people coming out of homelessness in an integrated, mixedincome development.

“Every day I witness

firsthand the harsh realities of Bostons housing crisis. The surge in homelessness in our region is a consequence of multiple compounding factors, including soaring rents and a severe shortage of affordable housing. St. Francis House is pleased to help alleviate this strain as a partner in providing much-needed affordable housing in downtown Boston.”

Services are then wrapped around them to ensure they are getting a stable footing for moving forward
