An Upper-Case Education

This self motivated project was to produce a series of type driven informative posters to be sold to young designers at the Leeds University Book Fair. Using inspirational quotes from designers, critiques and commentators on graphic design I aimed to inspire, educate and guide.

The benefit of this brief for myself was to further understand the design ideologies of some of my design heros and design critiques. Though my research I aimed to clarify my own issues within design and help myself to find where I belong in the broad subject that is graphic design. It will also be a refreshing piece of work for my portfolio as well as improving my screen printing ability.

The screen printed two colour A2 posters were sold at a premium, for their low numbers and their ability to work as a set as well as their low production numbers. (8 prints of each) They are straight to the point and aim to educate through striking typography. (These are just 3 of 4 two colour posters).

While having an impacting message the Form Follows Function poster has additional background into the emergence of the Swiss style and the influence of the Bauhaus, de Stijl movement and the Russian constructivists.

The posters are sold in tubes, each roll-wrapped in a double sided 130gsm tracing paper print, that has the entire range of 14 posters design on it. On the reverse there are a further 75 quotes from designers, commentators and critiques. This gives the product a high end finish and shows a dedication to the education of my audience.

Each tube has a sticker on it with a space for a name, so that the print(s) can be bought as a gift.

The Unity Through Diversity prints are screen printed across a range of coloured and textured stocks and with both black and white ink. With the obvious intention of emphasising the idea of diversity.

They provide a key visual link between the poster designs and the books that were also for sale. These prints were cheaper due to being printed in one colour, but still work as a conceptual set of prints.

The quote is that of April Greiman’s, a highly influential postmodernist designer whose ideology of a multi- disciplined approach to graphic design engaged audiences in a new and exciting way for over 20 years.

The books are a collection of all the best quotes. On the verso of each spread is a typed quote, while on the recto is a poster design that relates in some way to the other quote, re-enforcing the message.

The book is split into four chapters, wisdom, guidance, simplicity and pain. The quotes in each of these sections relate to chapter titles and together cover the ideologies and thoughts of designers over the past century. They are cheap to produce by implementing a french fold and being printed in black on coloured stock.

Each book is unique in that the order of the coloured pages is different. They are also packaged, again to add premium and be suitable as a gift. Only 10 were made justifying them being sold at a greater price than the posters.
