EDUKIDZ CHALLENGE

This is an activity-based challenge where Catalysts serve as guides/ facilitators for the learners

Let’s Tell a Story!

Come close, Sparks!

Let’s sit in a circle and turn big ideas into fun stories! In many African towns and villages, people love to tell stories.

Grandmas and grandpas sit under the stars and tell tales. Everyone listens, laughs, and learns.

Now it’s your turn to be the storyteller! Are you ready?

Let’s spark some stories!

What Makes a Good Story?

●Don’t worry – it’s easy and fun!

● Every good story has four parts.

● Let’s look at them:

Who is in the story? (Characters)

This can be:

– A child

– An animal

– A hero

– A clever trickster

You get to choose!

Where and When does it happen? (Setting)

Where does the story take place?

– In our town?

– In a forest?

– Long ago?

– Or right now?

Pick a fun place and time!

What happens in the story? (Plot)

Is there a problem or a fun adventure?

– Maybe someone gets lost.

– Maybe someone wants to find something.

– Maybe there’s a big goal to reach.

CHALLENGE TITLE

Let’s Create and Tell Stories

How does it end? (Solution)

What happens in the end?

– Do they fix the problem?

– Do they learn something new?

Think of a nice or funny way to end your story!

Now, like making a yummy soup, we’ll mix all these story parts together –and make something amazing!

Let’s begin our storytelling adventure!

What You will Do

Let us start with a fun and magic word game. How to Play:

Sit in a circle and put all your word cards in the middle

We are going on a magic travel

What will you take?

The first player will begin with:

○ For example: “I am going to the forest. I will take a cat” by taking the card with the word cat

The next player will continue with:

○ For example: “I am going to the forest. I will take a cat and a drum.” by pointing to the the first card by the first player and pick the card with the word drum

Each Spark adds one new word (from the word card bank)

Example:

“...a fox”

“...a rope”

“...a cake”

The game continues until 6–10 items are named. If a player forgets an item, the group helps them.

You play and everyone gets a turn

Meet Our Heroes

Split into 5 mixed-age groups. Each group has a B3 captain. Each group will take a set of story-words card

Choose who or what you want to be your hero

Now draw Your hero on a piece of paper

You need to work as a team

Now give each group a set of word cards. You will:

Pick words that match your characters (e.g. “run,” “big,” “kind,” “fox”)

Use the words to form simple sentences

Use those sentences to start building your story

Facilitator Tips:

Catalyst moves around to help with prompts like: “What does your hero do? What words can help you show it?”

Weaving the Tale

● Groups now build their full story using the sentences made from the word cards.

● Story structure:

● Beginning: “There was once a ___ in ___.“

● Middle: “One day, ___ happened.”

●End: “In the end, ___.”

B3 captains help write story outlines using words from their cards.

The Story Board

● Each group is given a manilla card or cardboard

● Each group draws four boxes for the story:

1. Beginning

2. Events

3. Climax

4. Ending

● Draw what happens in each box

● add simple captions using your word cards to guide you.

● Look at the example story board in your resource pack

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION

Show and Celebrate

● Each group presents.

● Use the storyboard or act it out!

● Others give feedback: ○ “I liked your character…” ○ or “The ending was fun!”

B3 Extension Challenge (Optional):

● Use your cards and storyboard to write the full story in neat sentences.

● Tie pages into a group storybook with a bright, colorful cover!

DELIVERABLES JUDGING CRITERIA

A short video (or several clips compiled) showcasing the learners creating and/ or telling their story.

At least three clear photographs of learners actively participating.

A photo of the collection of the stories created by the groups

include snippets of group work and the final presentations. (Approximately 3–5 minutes total is fine – ensure we can hear the learners’ voices and see their storyboard visuals in the video.)

Include one photo of a group drawing their storyboard, one of a B3 learner leading the discussion, and one of a group performing or presenting their story. Make sure the excitement and teamwork are visible

This can be the drawn storyboards or the written story pages (or both). You may scan or take photos of these. Aim for quality over quantity – up to 5 stories maximum (since you likely have 4–5 groups) is enough. Each story submission should show the characters and the sequence of events (through pictures or text). If the B3 learners wrote out the stories, you can submit those write-ups; if not, the storyboard images with a short explanation of each frame is great.

A short video or photos of learners creating and telling their story (Submit within the second week of September)
