Inductionofhostplantresistanceagainstavarietyofphytopathogensconstitutesan advancedstrategyofsafeandeffectiveplantdiseasemanagement.Microbialagents havebeenextensivelyusedquiteoftenforenhancingthetoleranceofhostplants againstabroadspectrumofphytopathogens,throughelicitationofsystemicacquired resistanceorenhancedplantgrowthandalsothroughactiveinhibitionofplantpathogens.Theformerclassofmicrobesaremoresuitablycategorizedasbiostimulants, whilethelattergroupofmicrobesarereferredtoasbiopesticides.Thetwocategories ofmicrobesinfutureareexpectedtoberegulatedundertwodifferentacts,i.e.,FertilizerControlOrder1983andPesticidesManagementAct(presentlyInsecticidesAct 1968).Biologicalagents(bothbiostimulantsandbiopesticides),however,shouldbe integratedsuitablyascomponentsofIPMwithothercontrolmeasuresbecausevarious methodsareeffectiveatdifferentsituationsanddurationsundervaryingconditions.In recentyears,thecontributionofbiologicalpestcontrolinsustainableagriculturehas beenincreasingbecauseofitseco-friendlynatureandmechanismofaction.Biocontrolagentsactthroughmycoparasitismand/orhyperparasitism,antibiosis,competition,secondarymetabolitesorbyinducingsystemicresistanceandupregulating defenseresponsiveenzymes.Also,plantsproducealargearrayofbioactivecompounds,specializedsecondarymetabolitestodefendthemselveswhenfacingbiotic andabioticstressconditions.Secondarymetabolitesplayanimportantroleinthe wayplantsinteractwiththeirenvironmentandareusuallyproducedinselectcell typeswithintheplant.Thesecompoundsplayanactiveroleindefenseagainstherbivores,fungi,bacteria,viruses,andotherplantscompetingforresources.Inspite ofthefactthatvoluminousworkhasalreadybeenpublished,identificationofnew potentialstrainsofbiologicalcontrolagentsandplantsecondarymetabolitesneeds tobecharacterizedandevaluatedfortheirsuitabilityindifferentclimaticconditions andalsotheireffectsonvariouscropplantsareyettobeexplored.
