Welcome Welcome to the Emergency Care & Safety Institute

Welcome to the Emergency Care & Safety Institute (ECSI), brought to you by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).

ECSI is an internationally renowned organization that provides training and certifications that meet job-related requirements as defined by regulatory authorities such as Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), The Joint Commission, and state offices of Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Education, Transportation, and Health. Our courses are delivered throughout a range of industries and markets worldwide, including colleges and universities, business and industry, government, public safety agencies, hospitals, private training companies, and secondary school systems.

ECSI programs are offered in association with the AAOS and ACEP. AAOS, the world’s largest medical association of musculoskeletal specialists, is known as the original name in EMS publishing with the very first EMS textbook in 1971, and ACEP is widely recognized as the leading name in all of emergency medicine.

ECSI Course Catalog

Individuals seeking training from ECSI can choose from among various traditional classroom-based courses or alternative online courses such as:

• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

• Bloodborne and Airborne Pathogens

• Babysitter Safety

• CPR (layperson and health care provider levels)

• Emergency Medical Responder

• First Aid (multiple courses available), and more!

ECSI offers a wide range of textbooks, instructor and student support materials, and interactive technology, including eBooks and online courses. ECSI student manuals are the center of an integrated teaching and learning system that offers resources to better support instructors and train students. The instructor supplements provide practical hands-on, time-saving tools like PowerPoint presentations, skill demonstration videos, and webbased distance learning resources. Technology resources provide interactive exercises and simulations to help students become prepared for any emergency.

The ECSI website fully supports instructors by providing a course roster system for easy upload and management of student information. Digital course completion certificates and cards attesting to ECSI’s recognitions of satisfactory course completion will be issued to those who successfully meet the course requirements. Instructors can distribute the completion certificates and cards to students via email or can print them out and issue on-site.

Why Is First Aid Important?

A large truck swings around a corner and crashes into an automobile, and pushes it over an embankment. Bystanders rush to the rescue. They extricate the injured driver of the car, lift him to his feet, stop a passing car, and send the injured man to a nearby hospital in a sitting position. Because of the lack of knowledge and unskilled handling, the man’s spinal cord is injured by the sharp edge of a broken vertebra, and he will remain paralyzed for the rest of his life. This tragic outcome could have been avoided if someone had known what to do in an emergency

A backcountry hiker is bitten by a rattlesnake. Her frantic companion cuts and sucks the bitten area, not realizing that this is an outdated and harmful procedure. By the time the woman seeks appropriate medical care, she has suffered extensive tissue damage. A trained first aid provider would have known the proper procedures to care for this person.

A group of beachgoers removes an unresponsive swimmer from the water. No one helps because no one knows cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The emergency medical services (EMS) ambulance arrives too late to revive the swimmer. CPR would have served as an interim action and preserved life for the few minutes needed until the ambulance arrived.

Late at night, a man who had earlier smashed a finger in a car door can no longer stand the excruciating pain caused by the pressure of blood accumulating underneath the fingernail. He drives himself to a
