— Ja nyt vielä kertaalleen varmuuden vuoksi sama, sanoi Irja, joka jännittyneenä seurasi Aamoksen nakutusta: Apua, apua, heti, hätä suuri, ammutaan. — Mutta ei sinun välttämättä tarvitse pistää kieltäsi ulos joka painalluksella. Hyvä on!
— Nyt pitäisi kääntää kone, niin että kuulisi, mitä se vastaa, sanoi Aamos. — Onko se saanut selvää.
— Et suinkaan sinä osaa sitä niin kääntää, epäili Irja.
Aamos aloitti taas saman ruuvien sormeilemisen, koetti avaimella, ettei kipinä enää räiskinyt, ja painoi sitten kuulotorven korvalleen.
— Kyllä tämä hyvin hiukan rätisee, sanoi hän, — mutta ei tästä mitään selkoa saa.
— Annas minäkin kuuntelen, sanoi Irja. — Kyllä siitä on mahdotonta saada mitään ajatusta.
— No nyt, virkahti Aamos, joka oli taas tarttunut kuulotorveen. — K… k… mikä kirjain se toinen oli, minä koetan kirjoittaa paperille… ei, nyt se sekaantui, en minä ehtinyt… ei siitä tule mitään. Se sähköttää liian nopeasti, ja Aamos laski epätoivoisen näköisenä kuulotorven kädestään.
— Älä jätä kesken, vaikket saakaan selvää.
Kuuntele siksi, kunnes lopettaa; sitten heti sähkötämme vielä kerran avunpyyntömme, sillä silloin tietysti siellä kuuntelevat.
Ja Aamos teki määräyksen mukaan.
— No niin, päätti Irja. — Ehkä tunnin päästä ovat täällä, jos ovat kuulleet ja saaneet selvän sähkösanomastamme. On kauheaa, kun ei voi mitään tehdä sitä ennen. Joka tapauksessa minä lähden vuorelle katselemaan ja kuuntelemaan, reipastui Irja. — Mene sinä, Inkeri, leirille, jos joku sattuisi tulemaan, ja sinä samoin, pikkumies, ja vaihda jotakin kuivaa yllesi — tai taidat jo olla touhustasi kuivunut — ja koeta korjata kanootti, jos voit, kaiken varalta, sinä… Mikä sinun nimesi taas olikaan, sinä sukeltaja?
— Aamos Kaino Kasperi Lax, vastasi poika partiokunniaa tehden.
— Niin juuri, sinä pikku lohi. Ilmankos me sinut vedestä löysimmekin.
HAUTA JA ARKKU
Kallionrotko, joka muistutti paremmin luolaa, oli miltei pilkkosen pimeä. Synkkinä ja alakuloisina pojat istuivat tai lojuivat ahtaassa vankilassaan. Rotkon perä oli särkyneiden kivien sulkema, edessä oli kyllä aukko, mutta sen toisella puolella vaani varma kuolema. Sen he nyt ymmärsivät. Mutta he ymmärsivät myöskin, ettei heillä ollut mitään hyvää odotettavana luolassaankaan.
Mikko istui kyyryksissään, pää käsien nojassa. Hän soimaili ja syytti itseään siitä, että oli laisinkaan ryhtynyt etsimään isänsä papereita Halkiovuoren puolelta. Hän oli nyt saattanut turmioon koko joukon, oman rakkaan vartionsa. Pusu ja Piksa olivat itsepäisen äänettömiä ja raskasmielisiä. Manski oli rauhallisin ja tuntui harkitsevan syvästi asiaa. Reino makasi jalka sidottuna nurkassa.
— Hyvät partioveljet, koetti Akki rohkaista, — ei tässä nyt ainakaan sen kummemmin käy, kuin että heikko henki menee. Ehdotan, että rynnätään lävestä läpi.
— Älä naljaile, sanoi Piksa hirvittävän vakavana. — Me koetimme kaikkemme saadaksemme pidetyksi teidät täältä ja pelastetuiksi tältä kohtalolta…
— Miksette puhuneet suutanne puhtaaksi, niin olisimme uskoneet. Olitte niin olevinanne ja touhusitte ties mitä, penäsi Akki kiivastuen.
— Niin, virkkoi Pusu raskaasti. — Olkoon nyt vain sanottu, että meidän oli pakko partiokunnian nimessä vannoa, ettemme puhuisi enempää kuin nyt olemme puhuneet. Vieläkin vala sitoo meitä, vaikka tiedämme, ettei mitään pelastusta enää ole. Te ette uskoneet meitä, ja nyt kaikki on lopussa.
Kuin hänen sanojensa vahvistukseksi kuului luolan aukon puolelta samassa kova rysäys, putoilevan soran ja pikku kivien ratinaa. Sitten kolahti alas suurempiakin kiviä, ja lopuksi jyrähti ilmeisesti iso kallionlohkare käytävään. Luolan suusta räiskähti sisään kivensirpaleita ja kivensauhua.
Pojat heittäytyivät vaistomaisesti rotkon perälle. Mikko karkasi kuitenkin heti pystyyn ja juoksi aukolle. Kaikki oli taas hiljaista kuin haudassa. Näytti vain, kuin aukon pimeys olisi ollut entistäänkin sankempi.
Mikko ryömi aukkoon puolen ruumiinsa verran. Mutta kun hän siinä ojensi kätensä, tunsi hän kiviseinän vastassaan. Hän tutki sitä tarkoin joka puolelta, mutta käytävä oli auttamattomasti ummessa.
— Pojat, sanoi hän vähän värähtävällä äänellä, kun hän taas oli tullut toisten luo. — Meidät on haudattu tänne. Halkeaman kattona ollut suuri kallionlohkare on pudotettu ylhäältä, ja se on sulkenut sen kokonaan.
— Sittenhän olemme pelastuneet, sanoi Manski reippaasti. —
Turvassa luodeilta. Pelkäsin paljon pahempaa. Ajattelin Viipurin lääninvankilaa ja käsikranaatteja. Jonkin aikaa kestämme aina täällä haudassamme, kunnes apua joutuu. Aamos vie varmasti sanan.
— En tiedä, ehkä niinkin, vastasi Mikko, — toivoa ainakin sopii.
Samassa Piksa tarttui häntä käteen ja kohotti sitä.
— Kuulkaa. Tuossa on meidän kohtalomme!
Ylhäältä oli alkanut rapista alas pikku kiviä.
Kylmä väristys kulki läpi Mikon kehon.
— Pojat, sanoi hän vavahtavalla äänellä, — kohta putoaa meidänkin kivikattomme ja murskaa meidät. Reino — sinä olet nuorin ja pienin. Ryömi aukkoon, siinä voit kyyryssä ehkä pelastua kahden kallionlohkareen väliin. Te muut — pyydän teiltä anteeksi, että olen saattanut teidät näin kauheaan kuolemaan. Olen ollut huono partiojohtaja. Te olette olleet liian kelpo tovereita. — Vielä meidän kuitenkin on koetettava viimeiseen saakka taistella henkemme puolesta. Tänne perälle!
He vetäytyivät ahtaan rotkon takaosaan. Mikko alkoi nopeasti heitellä syrjään irtokiviä. Kiihkeästi pojat kävivät häntä auttamaan. Joskus tuntui jo, kuin olisi tullut kiinteä kallioseinä vastaan, mutta isotkin lohkareet irtautuivat kuitenkin ponnistellessa. Katosta rapisi yhä soraa, sitten alkoi suurempiakin kiviä putoilla.
Pojat tekivät töitä kuolemanhädässä. Ehtisivätkö he saada itselleen kyllin suojapaikkaa, ennenkuin kattona oleva kallionlohkare putoaisi ja hauta saisi kuolleensa.
Mikko repi kiviä sormet verissä. Samalla hänen mielessään kuitenkin välkähti kaikenlaisia ajatuksia. Keitä nuo ihmispedot olivatkaan, jotka täten tahtoivat murskata heidät kivien alle? Eikö se ollut liian julmasti suunniteltua juonta. Oli kauheaa tuhota sillä tavoin niin monta syytöntä ihmishenkeä. Mutta hänhän oli oikeastaan itse syypää kaikkeen… ja… ehtisivätkö… ehtisivätkö he…
Muutamia suuria kiviä putoili vielä, mutta sitten yhtäkkiä taukosi rapina ja kivien vierintä. Pojat keskeyttivät työnsä ja pysähtyivät hetkeksi odottamaan. Kaikki oli aivan hiljaista.
— Kaivaudutaan joka tapauksessa rotkon perään, virkkoi Mikko. Emme tiedä, minä hetkenä he taas ryhtyvät työhön ja lohkare romahtaa.
Pojat kävivät uudelleen hurjasti käsiksi raivaustyöhön. Ihmeellistä kyllä näytti rotko siltä, kuin se olisi ollut ennenkin auki sille suunnalle, sillä kivi toisensa jälkeen irtautui, ja vähitellen he saivat syntymään miehen mittaisen kapean onkalon, johon jo pari kolme poikaa olisi sopinut varmaan turvaan. Mikko ponnisti etupäässä, ja ketjussa pojat kuljettivat kiviä ulos onkalosta. Rotko oli kuin kaadettu täyteen kivilohkareita, suurempia ja pienempiä.
Äkkiä tuntui Mikosta, kun hän kivellä sattui kolauttamaan edessä pystysuorassa olevaan paateen, kuin se olisi kumahtanut ontolta. Hän kopautti uudestaan, ja se antoi jälleen kumean, onton kaiun.
— Malttakaas, pojat, mitäs tämä on, hän huusi ja työnsi voimiensa takaa paatta. Mutta se ei liikahtanut. Kahta kiihkeämmin hän koetti irroitella kiviä kummaltakin puolen ja ylhäältä, saadakseen paatta enemmän näkyviin. Se tuntui olevan kovin suuri ja oli sileä kuin seinä.
Nääntyneenä Mikon täytyi lopulta levähtää. Manski tuli etupäähän, ja niin jatkettiin kivien raivaamista. Vihdoin saatiin onkalo niin suureksi, että Mikko ja Manski rinnan saattoivat työntää laakeaa edessä olevaa kiveä.
Se tuntui vihdoin antavan myöten ja kallistui yläpuoleltaan vitkaan poispäin. Raitista kylmää ilmaa virtasi heitä vastaan, ja heikko valonhämy näkyi aukosta. He rynnistivät uudelleen kiveä vastaan, ja aukko suureni jonkin verran. Mikko tunki itsensä aukkoon ja ryömi vaivalloisesti kiven yläreunan yli.
— Pojat, hän kuiskasi kiven takaa, — halkio väljentyy täällä, ja ehkä tätä jatkuu ulkoilmaan saakka. Mutta hiljaa, älkää puhuko sanaakaan.
Hän hapuili hämyisessä luolassa eteenpäin ja kompastui johonkin pohjalla olevaan kovaan esineeseen. Siinä oli laatikontapainen jaloissa. Hän raapaisi tulta tulitikkuun ja näki tikun juuri sammuessa sen punaiseksi maalatussa kannessa sanan onni. Se oli "Onnen arkku" täynnä erilaista tavaraa. Ja sen vieressä luolan nurkassa virui sekainen läjä papereita: isän kadonneet käsikirjoitukset.
KIMIN MALJA
Täyttä vauhtia aaltoja halkonut moottorivene hiljensi kulkuaan ja läheni varovasti Halkiovuoren rantaa. Saara hoiti konetta, Taavi Korpela peräsintä.
Matkalla oli keskusteltu siitä merkillisestä ja taitamattomasti lähetetystä sähkösanomasta, jonka Taavi oli kaupungissa vastaanottanut. Hän oli ollut kovin ällistynyt ensin, mutta sitten kiiruhtanut aika vauhtia kadulle, mennäkseen hakemaan apua toveriltaan Vesasen Laurilta, jolla oli nopeakulkuinen moottorivene. Sillan korvassa hän kuitenkin oli tavannut muutamia partiopukuisia kimiläsiä ja vähän kauempana heidän johtajansa Saaran seurassa.
Hän oli aikonut rientää heidän ohitseen, mutta muuttanut sitten äkkiä aikomustansa ja kääntynyt kimiläisten johtajan puoleen kertoen hänelle lyhyesti, mitä oli tapahtunut.
Kimiläiset olivat olleet heti valmiita lähtemään. Heitä oli ollut parikymmentä poikaa isolla moottoriveneellä kaupungissa, ja kymmenen minuutin kuluttua kaikki olivat olleet rannassa koolla.
Aamos Kaino Kasperi Lax tuli ilmeisen ilomielin ja toimekkaana kuten aina leirirantaan vastaanottamaan moottorivenettä. Hän selitti tilanteen. Pojat olivat yhä poissa, Irja Koivula myös vuorella, Inkeri Viljanen leirillä. Jotakin hyvin ikävää oli varmasti tapahtunut.
— Ketkä haluavat vapaaehtoisesti lähteä kanssani vuorelle? sanoi
Taavi. — Pelkään, ettemme voi ottaa mukaamme nuorimpia, koska tuntuu, ettei retki ehkä ole aivan vaaraton.
Viisitoista suurinta, rotevaa poikaa valittiin. Kimiläisten johtajalla, Saaralla ja Taavilla oli taskuaseet, muilla tavalliset partiovarustuksensa.
Ketjussa varovaisesti, kiviä ja puita suojanaan käyttäen joukko eteni Halkiovuorelle. Sen korkeinta pohjoiskohtaa lähestyessään he kuulivat puhelua, ja lähellä avonaisena olevaa halkeamaa he näkivät liikettä puiden välissä. Taavi hiipi kohti nopeasti ja näki pian siinä Mikon ja kaikki kadoksissa olleet pojat ja Irjan, joka parhaillaan tarkasti haavoittuneen Reinon jalkaa.
Hämmästyneet kimiläiset kohottivat iloisen eläköön-huudon nähdessään toverinsa ja jännityksen yhtäkkiä lauetessa. Uupuneina ja kalpeina halkiovuorelaiset siinä seisoivat, mutta tyytyväisyys ja ilo loisti heidän silmistään kuitenkin.
— Mikä täällä oikein on ollut hätänä ja mitä merkillistä tapahtunut? sai Taavi vihdoin kysytyksi.
— Isän kadonneet paperit, "Onnen arkku", josta sinäkin jo olet yhtä ja toista kuullut, on löydetty, sanoi Mikko hymyillen ja osoitti maassa olevaa avonaista punaista arkkua, jossa näkyi paperimytty.
— Entä ammunta, hätä, hengenvaara?
Mikko viittasi kädellään järvelle pohjoista kohti. Kaukana selällä näkyi pieni piste.
— Paenneet, virkkoi hän yksikantaan. — On turha enää tällä kertaa ajatella takaa-ajoa edes moottoriveneellä. Heitä on kolme hyvin aseistettua miestä, ja heillä on meidän oiva veneemme. He soutavat väkevästi ja ovat kohta Kolmanpohjan rannassa ja häviävät sen suuriin metsiin.
— Me lähdemme heti, kuohahti Taavi, — me emme voi päästää heitä niin vähällä. Heidät täytyy saada kiinni, muuten he ovat koko seutukunnan kauhuna.
— Jätämme sen tehtävän toisille. Heillä on nyt neljän kilometrin etumatka. Saatte tyytyä siihen, että pelastitte henkemme — parhain kiitos siitä. He — Mikko viittasi taas järvelle päin — keskeyttivät työnsä heti, kun näkivät teidän tulevan kaukana moottoriveneellä. Ja rantaluolasta paeten he niemekkeen suojissa soutivat pois. Mutta niin kiire heille tuli, että Onnen arkku ja muutakin tavaraa heiltä jäi tänne heidän luolaansa. Tulkaa katsomaan.
Neljä kimiläistä valmisti heti lujat partiopaarit, joilla Reino Irjan seuratessa mukana kannettiin leirille. Muut lähtivät Mikon matkaan.
— Katsokaa, mistä te pelastitte meidät. Me olimme rotkossa ahtaassa
Pirunkaukalossa, ja tuo riippui päämme päällä.
Ei voinut olla mitään epäilystä siitä, mitä siinä jo muutaman hetken kuluttua olisi tapahtunut, jos tihumiehet olisivat saaneet
jatkaa työtään. Halkio oli siitä kummallinen, että siinä paikkapaikoin oli suuria kivilohkareita jäänyt riippumaan kattona seinämien väliin. Tuntemattomat miehet näyttivät olleen erittäin hyvin selvillä Halkiovuoren kaikista salaisuuksista. Muutamia lujia puukankia oli vielä paikoillaan, eikä ilmeisesti olisi vaatinut enää suurtakaan työtä, ennenkuin jättiläismäinen lohkare olisi luisunut halkioon ja työntänyt kaiken muun altaan, niinkuin toinen samanlainen oli tehnyt itse käytävässä tukiten sen kokonaan.
Kauhistuneina ja päätään pudistellen pojat katselivat tuota loukkoa, josta oli vähällä tulla heidän monen toverinsa hauta.
Mikko johti heidät sitten näkymättömiin häipyvää halkiouomaa pitkin aina jyrkkään kalliorantaan saakka. Siinä oli jyrkänteessä aivan kapea reunama, jota pitkin varovaisesti kiiveten he tulivat sankan pensaston suojaaman onkalon suulle. Sisältä onkalo laajeni luolan tapaiseksi rotkoksi, johon pojat olivat päässeet suoraan halkiostaan raivaamalla rotkoa tukkineet kivet tieltään.
Luola näytti olleen pitkät ajat miesten asuntona.
— Pojat, Pusu ja Piksa, voisivat ehkä kertoa lisää paljonkin. Mutta partiovala sitoo heidän kielensä. Minulla ei ole muuta kuin arveluja, virkkoi Mikko. — Koska heillä oli Onnen arkku mukanaan, ovat he varmasti kuuluneet samaan joukkoon, joka talvella ryöstäen tunkeutui taloomme ja vei isän arkun. He ovat sitten paenneet tänne erämaihin ja elelleet täällä pitkät ajat, kunnes meidän tänne tulomme häiritsi heidän rauhaansa. He nähtävästi sattumalta yllättivät Pusun ja Piksan ja säästivät heidän henkensä — ihmeellistä kyllä — sillä ehdolla, että he vannoivat sen ankaran valan, jota he eivät nytkään millään riko. Pojat koettivat kaikilla tavoin pelastaa
meidät uhkaavasta vaarasta, mutta Onnen arkun etsintä ja minun itsepintaisuuteni oli syöstä meidät turmioon.
— Mutta, sanoi Manski miettiväisenä, — miten on selitettävissä, että ryöstäjät ylipäänsä huolivat arkkua ollenkaan?
— Se oli minullekin arvoitus tähän päivään saakka. Mutta luulen voivani selittää asian nyt, kun tarkastelin isän käsikirjoituksia. Hänen tutkimuksiinsa liittyi myöskin paljon vierasmaalaisia kansantieteellisiä esineitä, mm. rahallisesti arvottomia vanhoja seteleitä, joita hän oli osaksi säilytellyt käsikirjoituksen välissä. Arvelen, että ne olivat aiheuttaneet käsikirjoituksen viemisen sellaisenaan. Mutta nyt on aika palata leirille, pojat.
Keventynein kiitollisin mielin pojat alkoivat kulkea leiriä kohti, missä toiset jo olivat ryhtyneet keittopuuhiin. Heidän tullessaan alas rinnettä antennin ohi Irja tuli iloisena ja hilpeänä heitä vastaan.
— Minun käsittääkseni Reinon haava on aivan vaaraton, ja ellei häntä olisi lujasti kolhittu ja paiskeltu kovakouraisesti rotkoon haavoittumisen jälkeen, luulisin hänen melkein jo kykenevän jaloilleen.
— Se on hauska tieto. Kiitos siitä ja kaikesta muusta avusta, Irja. Sinä olet ollut oikea Halkiovuoren hyvä haltiatar — ja kun sinä meidän luolasta tullessamme ilmestyit eteemme…
— No, no, Mikko, nyt sinun runoratsusi karkaa jo kasekseen, nauroi Irja.
— Tuossa, viittasi Taavi, — on se antenni, jota loppujen lopuksi saatte kiittää pelastuksestanne, ja Aamos Kaino Kasperia.
— Tuota… sanoi Aamos astuen esiin muitten takaa ja pannen suunsa tavanmukaisesti torvelle, — kyllä, tuota, oikeastaan, Irja… tuota… Koivulan neiti se hommasi sen sähköttämisen.
— Ja sinä näyttelit insinööriä, niin että kipinät naksi, Aamos Kaino Kasperi Laksi, pisteli Akki.
Iloisesti hälisten joukko painui rinnettä alas. Mikko kantoi Onnen arkun lennätinmajaan ja Irja odotti häntä hieman alempana polulla.
— No niin, sanoi Irja. — Sinun Onnen arkkusi löytyi kuin löytyikin.
— Niin, sanoi Mikko ilosta loistavin silmin.
— Se löytyi. Ja sen löytämisessä ei sinulla ole aivan pieni osuus, sinä metsätyttö. Kuule. Nyt minä alan ymmärtää teitä nykyajan tyttöjä. Sinä olet kuin entisaikojen aatelisneidot. Sinä vaadit jonkin sankariteon. Minä lähden nyt maailmalle kolmen viikon perästä.
Pitkät ja ankarat työn vuodet odottavat minua. Sano, saanko tehdä työtä ja ponnistella hänen voittamisekseen, joka minua Onnen arkunkin etsimiseen innosti?
— Me nykyajan tytöt, sanoi Irja naurusuin, — emme ole vähääkään aatelisneitojen kaltaisia, emmekä — hänen katseensa loisti, kun hän loi silmänsä ylempänä seisovaan Mikkoon, — myöskään sillä tavoin jalosyntyisiä, että meitä voisi millään uroteolla ostaa…
