Shops at Edsa Shangri-La

t Edsa Shangri-La, Manila, we recognize the need for good fun, especially

with those we care about most. Our urban oasis is quite the ideal place for it – a haven for creating new and joyful memories. It is also a place where one can find the space to be still in the middle of our city’s chaos; to breathe and to feel renewed again. With the holidays just around the corner, it is time to start planning on those brand new memories. For beyond the toys and the trinkets, the joy found in our relationships is the real treasure that makes life full. Speaking of what makes life fulfilling, we would like to share that our hotel is now a guardian of the Kythe Foundation, an organization that cares for children who have cancer. Should you wish to be a part of our outreach programs or if you would like to make a donation, please let us know. We would be very grateful for your time and support. We take this opportunity to thank you for your friendship through the years. May you have a very meaningful Christmas with your loved ones and a new year filled with your most treasured dreams come true.

FOR

PIZZA & BEER

CHECK OUT OUR RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE PERFECT WOOD-FIRED PIZZA AND CRAFT BEER COMBO.

LOVERS

The Parma Ham and Rocket, Napoletana and Quattro Formaggi are best complemented with our exclusively brewed craft beer, the Limelight Ale. It is perfectly light, fizzy and refreshing, with a distinctly citrusy kaffir lime aroma. (ABV: 5.5%, IBU: 20)

For vegetable or seafood lovers, the Verdure Alla Griglia and Frutti Di Mare are best paired with the sweet but light, hoppy and citrusy Tropical Haze Wheat Beer. (ABV: 5.5%)

Try the Diavola with the Sunstoked Blonde Ale if you are in the mood for meat with a bit of spice. The beer’s slightly malty, slightly sweet and slightly zesty taste helps to neutralize the zing of the meat. (ABV: 4.5%)

Into Hawaiian pizza? Its mix of sweet pineapples and chunks of country pork ham is delightful with the tangy passion fruit and warm ginger flavors of the Summer Passion Ale. (ABV: 5.0%, IBU: 17.2)

The tasty medley of juicy tomatoes, creamy mozzarella, fresh basil and olive oil of the Margherita goes well with the Summer Sessions Ale. Crisp, refreshing, with light maltiness and soft floral notes. (ABV: 4.3%, IBU: 17.2)

AfternoonTea E T I Q U E T T E

Afternoon tea is a ritual steeped in tradition, and originated in Great Britain in the 1840s. Today, it continues to be one of the most pleasurable ways to spend an afternoon. Let’s take a moment to know more and brush up on our tea-time etiquette.

AFTERNOON TEA IS NOT THE SAME AS HIGH TEA. Afternoon tea or low tea was a social affair enjoyed by the upper crust, and was intended to fill the gap between morning and evening meals. High tea, on the other hand, was celebrated in the late afternoon by commoners and was comprised of more substantial meals that replaced late dinner. “High” and “low” refer to the height of tables used for the occasions, with high tea being served at the dinner table.

For low tables, pick up your cup and saucer together. Hold the saucer in one hand and cup in the other.

3 2 1

THIRD COURSE Sweets

SECOND COURSE Scones with jam and clotted cream

Contrary to popular belief, your little finger or pinkie should not be extended as you drink your tea. Scone is properly pronounced \ ‘skōn , ‘skän \

FIRST COURSE Savories and tea sandwiches

Have a fun gathering with friends at the Lobby Lounge over Afternoon Tea. Available daily from 2 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Call (632) 633 8888.

The Summer Palace Tasting Menu by Executive Chinese Chef Tony Sum is a play of contrasting textures and tastes, a delightful selection of the different flavor profiles Summer Palace is well-known for. To kick things off, you begin with a medley of playful appetizers- chilled, citrusy-sweet pomelo fruit drizzled with spicy wasabi sauce, fried soft shell crab tossed in light and fluffy pork floss, smoky barbecued pork covered in honey sauce and fried king prawns coated with crispy cornflakes.

Next up is the Thai style braised supreme seafood soup, a thick, savory soup to warm up those taste buds. For the main course, you have a choice between a perfectly pan-fried beef steak in rich black pepper sauce or a delicious stir-fried U.S. Kurobuta pork with seasonal vegetables. You definitely have to make room for the half lobster with noodles in superior stock, scrumptious lobster in a bed of noodles and “shang tang, a creamy, flavorful seafood sauce. Finally, the perfect ending to a hearty meal, chilled lemongrass jelly with sherbet, refreshing and light in flavor and the traditional fried glutinous sesame balls filled with sweet, thick red bean filling. The Summer Palace Tasting Menu is available for lunch and dinner daily at Php 2,550++ per person. For reservations, call (632) 633 8888 or email at restaurantrsvns.esl@shangri-la.com.

THE ART OF

SHIATSU What exactly is it and why is it good for you?

A holistic therapy that originated from Japan, Shiatsu, literally means “finger pressure”. Like acupuncture, it is based on the holistic system of traditional Chinese medicine, where conditions are believed to result from imbalances in the natural flow of energy throughout the body. This ancient form of bodywork uses the practitioner’s fingers and palms to apply sustained, vertical pressure to specific points, penetrating gently but deeply in a variety of massage techniques that includes pressing, stroking, grasping, kneading, compression and vibration. This method balances out the body’s energy flow, known in Eastern medicine as qi.

BENEFITS

Limbers muscles for improved tone, facilitating proper joint alignment

Stimulates circulation of blood and lymph, supplying increased nourishment to and removing waste from all the body’s cells

Strengthens the immune system

Reduces stress and promotes greater mind-body integration

LANGUAGE OF THE

FAN Hand fans have a long history dating back to at least three thousand years. Originating from the Greeks, these hand fans made it to the Philippines during the Spanish regime. The abaniko became a mainstay in women’s attire, complementing the baro’t saya. The abaniko (traditional hand fan) possesses unparalleled craftsmanship. More than its design, novelty, and original purpose of cooling us down, the fan played a big role in our own history as it acted as a secret communication device.

Action

Fan facing forward, covering the chest Meaning

“yes.”

During the Spanish era, women were expected to maintain a modest decorum. Fortunately, women were resourceful enough to cleverly use fans to convey words and emotions they were supposed to keep to themselves. It was an unspoken and widely understood language that women would use to interact with suitors. While the secret language is no longer practiced, the abaniko still remains a precious relic from that era. Here’s what a few fan actions meant, back in the day.

The idea behind Thali is to offer different flavors of sweet, salt, bitter, sour, astringent and spicy in one single plate.
