The birth of abstract art in the nineteenth century was a breath of fresh air in the art world. Until that time, most art had been representational, meaning that it looked specifically like something that could be observed in the real world. Abstraction is non-representational, and is, therefore, more subject to the interpretation of the imaginations of the artist and viewer. Color, texture, and form become more important than the appearance of something that looks like something else. There are several artists that are known for bringing this exciting new type of art to the world.

Wassily Kandinsky Wassily Kandinsky is generally considered to be the foremost pioneer of European abstract art. Kandinsky originally studied and had a career in law and economics, but he was drawn to the study of art at the age of 30. Although Russian-born, his career in art led him to Germany where he taught at the prestigious Bauhaus school. From there, he moved to France where he created his most famous works of art before his death in 1944. https://edmondritter.org/the-best-abstract-artists-of-all-time/
