Ringing in 2026 in Scottsdale Lisa and I have good friends that host a New Year’s Eve party every year at their Arizona home which is great fun. Scottsdale may be a long way to travel for a party but there is the added benefit of, well, the party being in Scottsdale. When we go it makes me wonder why we do not take off for Scottsdale more often. It is such a wonderful place to visit and with direct flights from Oklahoma City, it is a snap to get to folks. We do not get the ease of having direct flights to many Hibbard places from here so when you find a place that is as beautiful and fun as Scottsdale, we should make the hop more often.

There is a plethora of places to stay and enjoy in Scottsdale. They include a number of very expensive resorts all based around Camelback Mountain.

There are also some more reasonable options. The place is full of outdoor activity and great weather, so you will not spend much time in your room.

Our choice was the Hermosa Inn in Paradise Valley.

Last year we found a restaurant that we enjoyed a great deal. It was LON’S at the Hermosa Inn. They had a large outdoor space that was great right up to the point a bird dropped a partial load on my head. Luckily, it was a small bird, and the little dude hit my bald spot so clean up was a breeze. We fell in love with the place despite my “incident” and decided to stay at the Inn this time.

I figured it would be a quicker trip to the shower should it happen again.

The Hermosa Inn, nestled in Paradise Valley near Scottsdale, Arizona, is a boutique hotel with a rich and colorful history. Its story begins in the mid-1930s when renowned cowboy artist Alonzo “Lon” Megargee purchased several acres of desert land. Megargee, originally from Philadelphia, was captivated by the American Southwest and its cowboy culture. He built his adobe home and studio on the property, naming it “Casa Hermosa” which is Spanish for “beautiful house.” The architecture reflected influences from Spain and Mexico, featuring hand-hewn wooden beams, thick adobe walls, and custom ironwork, all of which remain signature elements of the Inn today.

Megargee’s home quickly became a gathering place for artists, intellectuals, and Hollywood celebrities seeking the tranquility and inspiration of the desert. Obviously, Lisa and I fit right into its history. His paintings, especially “The Last Drop from His Stetson,” became iconic representations of the West and are still celebrated today. The Hermosa Inn’s bar, LON’s Last Drop, is named after this famous work.

By the 1940s, Casa Hermosa transitioned from a private residence to a guest ranch, as Megargee began hosting visitors to supplement his income.

The property changed hands several times over the decades, each owner preserving its historic charm while adding modern amenities. In 1987, a fire severely damaged the original building, but in 1992, Fred and Jennifer Unger purchased and lovingly restored the place, reopening it in 1994 as The Hermosa Inn. The restoration maintained the Southwest character, and Megargee’s artwork remains displayed throughout the property.

In 2015, the Allred family acquired the Inn, further enhancing its luxury while respecting its heritage. Today, The Hermosa Inn features forty-three casitas set amid lush gardens, offering guests an intimate, art-inspired escape with stunning views of Camelback Mountain.

Scottsdale is a great town, but we go to this party to see our friends once a year, so we used the opportunity and the beautiful setting of the Hermosa to relax and enjoy the property, including the pool. We did visit a couple of sites off property that were worth the effort.

The Hermosa Inn has been inducted into Historic Hotels of America, recognized for its preservation of historic integrity, architecture, and ambiance. It has also been named the No. 1 Arizona hotel by Travel + Leisure and is celebrated for its unique blend of history, luxury, and Southwestern hospitality.

Great food is at the top of our list when we travel and Scottsdale is no different. The restaurant is what attracted us in the first place. LON’S at The Hermosa Inn is the resort’s acclaimed restaurant, occupying the original adobe home and studio of Lon Megargee. The restaurant’s ambiance is steeped in history, with handcrafted mesquite beams, adobe walls, ironwork accents, and Megargee’s art adorning the space. The setting is intimate and charming, ideal for special occasions or a memorable night out. Even if you are staying elsewhere, lunch or dinner at LON’S is worth the short drive.

LON’S offers a globally inspired take on classic Arizona fare, with dishes that are smoked, roasted, and wood-grilled using fresh regional ingredients.

The menu is known for its bold, creative flavor combinations and its commitment to authentic Southwestern cuisine. Guests can dine in the main restaurant, on the celebrated outdoor patio, or in the unique subterranean wine cellar which was once a secret Prohibition era hideaway for cowboys and gamblers. The wine cellar, now home to more than 6,000 bottles, offers a special fivecourse summer dining experience and has received the Wine Spectator’s “Best of Award of Excellence” for ten consecutive years.

The bar and casual dining counterpart, LON’S Last Drop, is named after Megargee’s iconic painting. This is where we ate our supper every night except for the evening of the party at our friend’s house. It features hand-crafted cocktails, an exten-

The staff was incredible. They anticipated what you might need and were so quick to accommodate their guests. No, this was not a freebee for us. We paid our way. It is not an inexpensive stay but well worth the price for peace and quite post holidays.

One of our day trips was to Butterfly Wonderland. We were not sure what to expect but we needed to do some walking around after all the great food. You can explore the rainforest in the largest butterfly conservatory in the country right in Arizona.

Butterfly Wonderland transports guests of all ages to the rainforest by immersing them in the world of butterflies and other rainforest animals.

You can learn about Monarch migration in a captivating 3D movie, observe live chrysalis as they emerge naturally into beautiful butterflies, spend ample time strolling through the conservatory with the butterflies, get up close to unique reptiles that inhabit rainforests across the world, and even indulge in edible insects. We did not do that last part.

We also spent a day walking through their Japanese Garden. Lisa’s mother got us started on searching out Japanese gardens and we look for them whenever we travel. They are always so beautiful, but it makes for great walking.

Salute to long time performer Steve Tyrell EDITOR Over the weekend, I learned that Steve Tyrell will give his final performances as a singer on February 13 and 14 at the Catalina Bar in Hollywood. Steve was the second artist we ever booked when Ray Hibbard and I launched the Tres Amigos concerts in 2003. That show had to be postponed due to the health and the consequent death of his wife—and when Steve was ready to return to performing, ours was the very first stage he chose.

Many know Steve for his iconic vocal of “The Way You Look Tonight” in Father of the Bride, but that moment represents only a fraction of his legacy. His work on Father of the Bride and Father of the Bride II reignited a modern love for the Great American Songbook.

While many followed, no one — then or now — does it better than Steve.

Others may have greater range or technical prowess, but no one sells a song, or enchants an audience, like he does. He became the most requested artist to return by our fans, and remains the finest entertainer ever to grace the UCO Jazz Lab

Over the past four years, Steve’s health has not been kind. After heart surgery and a long difficult recovery, and now at 81, he has decided to step away from singing—closing a remarkable chapter as an artist, performer, producer, songwriter, and radio host.

The only place I ever found that surpassed seeing him at the Jazz Lab was New York’s Café Carlyle during the holidays. If I could relive one holiday evening, it would be sitting there again with my wife and adult children, listening to Steve in that timeless room at the Carlyle Hotel.

Across 24 years of Tres Amigos concerts, Steve performed eight times at the Jazz Lab, accompanied by an extraordinary roster of musicians, including Plas Johnson, Chris Claremont, Byron Stripling, Johnny Guerrin, Lew Soloff, Bob Mann, Quinn Johnson, Jon Allen, Lyman Medeiros, Steve Cotter, Kevin Winard, and Gary Matsumoto.

What kind of guy is Steve Tyrell?

He knew my daughter was the first person to turn me on to him when she gave me his first CD for Father’s Day. And when he heard she was getting married, he helped me surprise her at her wedding reception where she and I danced our Father/Daughter dance while he sang “The Way You Look Tonight” from Father of the Bride. By hook or by crook, I’ll be in Los Angeles on February 14 to witness his final performance. Steve Tyrell is one of the great gifts of my musical life: a musician with heart and a consummate professional, with plenty of both to

spare.

While Steve is retiring from singing — not from life —i t’s painful to know Tres Amigos fans will never hear him live again, much as I felt when J.D. Souther passed. I often introduced Steve as Oklahoma’s adopted son, and as far as I’m concerned, he always will be.

Some say depression is the realization of our own mortality. Maybe so.

But that doesn’t lessen the sadness of hearing someone sing for the last time.

Most of us think we are going to live forever. At least we act like it.

Every time Steve performed for the Tres Amigos, especially during his en-

cores, there was a shared awareness that the magic was fleeting—a release of joy and gratitude felt both onstage and in the audience. Chalk it up, maybe, to the "Café Carlyle" dream like spell he could place us under on those nights at the UCO Jazz Lab. Now, what remains for those fortunate enough to have seen him live is the lasting euphoria of memory: that raspy voice, that mischievous smile, and his ability to make you feel like he was singing those timeless standards only for you. That, we’ll carry for the rest of our lives. If that isn’t living forever, it’s the next best thing.

Grant to help with research into what triggers lupus An Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation scientist has received $3.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to investigate genetic changes believed to be catalysts for the autoimmune disease lupus.

With the four-year federal grant, scientist Swapan Nath, Ph.D., hopes to identify DNA errors that disrupt a routine biological clean-up process called autophagy. In this continual process, cells recycle old parts and discard faulty parts.

“Problems with autophagy in immune cells and kidney cells seem to be closely linked to lupus,” said Nath, who holds the William H. & Rita Bell Chair in Biomedical Research at OMRF. “Our lab and others have found that when autophagy goes wrong, immune cells re-

lease too many inflammatory signals, and kidney cells become damaged and leak protein, which ultimately can lead to kidney failure.”

Nath has spent his career trying to identify specific genetic changes, or variants, associated with lupus – a challenging task since the body has more than 3 million genetic variants spread across about 20,000 different genes.

Lupus is a chronic illness that can cause widespread inflammation and organ damage.

It affects more than 200,000 Americans, about 90% of whom are female. Existing treatments mainly focus on managing symptoms and preventing flares of the disease. There is no cure.

Scientists have long known lupus has a strong genetic component, but environmental triggers like sunlight, cigarette smoke, stress and viruses are also necessary to activate the disease.

Through previous work, Nath’s lab analyzed large genetic datasets to identify regions of the genome associated with lupus risk. The data came from samples housed at OMRF and donated by thousands of lupus patients and healthy controls through the Lupus Family Registry and Repository and the Oklahoma Cohort of Rheumatic Diseases.

“The challenge is narrowing down which specific genetic variants are causing the problem and which gene they affect,” Nath said.

“We do this through statistical analysis and then testing in the lab.”

With this grant, Nath’s lab hopes to further narrow the list of potential genes associated with lupus by looking specifically for variants in genes of kidney cells. Ultimately, his work could help lupus scientists and physicians better understand the biological mechanism that links genetic disease risk to cell dysfunction and organ damage.

“This could lead to new drug targets, better risk prediction, and perhaps even cell-based therapies in the future,” said OMRF Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer Judith James, M.D., Ph.D. “That would be a huge advancement, as it could mean earlier intervention and the prevention of organ damage for our patients.”

Nath’s grant, No. R01AI191517-01A1, was awarded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the NIH. He previously received funding from the Presbyterian Health Foundation and from the Oklahoma Center for Adult Stem Cell Research, part of the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust, for preliminary research.

From 1992 to 1997 he was president of the University of Central Oklahoma and initiated several construction projects at the school. Part of One Big Beautiful Bill

Rural Oklahoma’s healthcare getting help Oklahoma has officially secured approximately $223.5 million for the first year of a five-year grant through the Rural Health Transformation (RHT) Program, part of an historic $50 billion federal investment authorized by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. This award marks a new era for the state, providing unprecedented resources to strengthen the delivery of healthcare and improve outcomes for communities across rural Oklahoma.

“Quality rural health access is vital to Oklahoma’s future,” said Governor Kevin Stitt. “Funding from the Rural Health Transformation Program will help strengthen smalltown clinics and critical access hospitals so families can get quality care close to home.

Where you live should never determine whether you get the care you need.”

The RHT Program, under the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), is designed to help states reimagine rural health care by improving access, quality, and sustainability. Oklahoma’s plan aligns with CMS’s five strategic goals: • Make rural America healthy again • Sustainable access • Workforce development • Innovative care •Tech innovation "Rural health care is the stabilizing factor for growth and success of many Oklahoma communities," said Clay Bullard, Secretary of Health and Mental Health and Oklahoma Health Care Authority CEO. "This funding provides a transformational opportunity for Oklahoma to enhance both our access to care and the technolog-

“This funding is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to reshape rural health in Oklahoma,” said Commissioner of Health Keith Reed. “The RHT Program is a powerful step forward, laying the foundation for lasting change. Continued collaboration is key to success, and we encourage communities and stakeholders to

• Building health data utility: expanding access to, use of, and uses for health data through investment in base technology (e.g., Electronic Health Records), interoperability, and data and analytics functionality.

Truth about getting older: Moving from surviving to thriving Aging often comes with a familiar story. Many people are told, implicitly or explicitly, that their best years are behind them, that decline is inevitable, and that the only real choices are to stay put until circumstances force a change or to end up in a nursing home. A seminar coming to north Oklahoma City this January challenges that narrative head-on.

The Truth about Getting Older: Going from Surviving to Thriving will be held Thursday, January 15, at the Francis Tuttle Technology Center’s Rockwell campus. Part of the ongoing Senior Living Truth Series, the seminar invites older adults, caregivers, and community members to rethink what later life can look like; what it takes to live it well.

The program emphasizes a hopeful but realistic message: thriving in later years does not happen by accident. It requires intentional effort, honest

self-reflection, and a willingness to be proactive rather than reactive. Rather than allowing circumstances to dictate the future, participants are encouraged to “write their own story” of aging.

During the seminar, attendees will explore what organizers call the “hard truths” of aging, including the serious risks of isolation, the quiet toll of passivity, and why waiting for something to happen may be the riskiest plan of all. From there, the focus shifts to current, practical solutions, offering ways to remain physically strong, mentally engaged, and socially connected, regardless of age or ability.

The session also highlights the many paths to purpose and community available to older adults today. Whether someone lives independently, with family, or in a senior living setting, the seminar underscores that meaningful engagement is possible

Lawmaker urges high school students to page at the Capitol Rep. Erick Harris, R-Edmond, is encouraging high school juniors and seniors to apply for the Oklahoma House of Representatives Page Program for the upcoming legislative Harris session.

Every year, hundreds of juniors and seniors from across the state participate in the House High School Page Program at the Oklahoma State Capitol in Oklahoma City. Participating students have the opportunity to view the legislative process up close and gain a deeper understanding of state government.

Harris said students participating in the Page Program gain firsthand experience that can't be replicated in a classroom.

"I’ve seen how the House Page Program sparks interest in civic responsibility and public service," Harris said. "Regardless of where their career path may take them, Pages leave with a stronger appreciation for democracy and the role they can play in it. It’s an experience they carry

with them long after the session ends."

Students accepted to the program are assigned to one week during the legislative session, which runs from the first Monday in February through the last Friday in May. They arrive on Sunday afternoon and serve Monday through Thursday in the House Chamber during daily session. Pages also assist representatives and staff with tasks and participate in the House Page Mock Legislature on the floor of the House Chamber.

Hotel accommodations and chaperones are provided for all students.

Pages are transported to and from the State Capitol daily and are closely supervised.

Commentary ... We’re on YOUR Side In the land of 40-below Erick Harris bill beefs up Do you remember last week when I pointed out the winter blast hitting Fairbanks, Alaska?

The “high” temperature that week was in the 30s. To be clear, that's 30 degrees below zero.

Steve Gust Lows dipped into the 40 below and plus. That took place over many days in a row.

It seems as if they had to put up with temperatures like that for the start of the new year. I believe this week they were forecast to only have weather reaching the 10 below range.

It’s still hard for me to imagine how cold that is. Fairbanks has people who can adjust and cope with it.

One move they had to make was to halt sanitation runs. The risk of frost bite or hypothermia was simply too great for the guys to keep working.

Hard to imagine any outside jobs when the mercury dips that low.

What was interesting is I saw a clip of two women talking about their cold snap.

It didn’t seem to bother them too much. They appeared to be in their

70s and were grateful the cold hadn’t reached over 60 below like they had seen in other years. Now you might think they would want to book a plane ticket out of there. But they both loved the clean, fresh air of Fairbanks. This time of year the sun is only out for about four hours a day.

People must be pretty tough up there.

I read once about a man who had a bad toothache in Alaska. He didn’t live in Fairbanks or anywhere close to a town of any size. The guy took the Tom Hanks “Castaway,” approach to the bad tooth. He attempted to remove it himself. He grabbed a pair of pliers and did his best to yank the tooth out. It didn’t go so well. The tooth wouldn’t budge. And there was intense pain involved. Sometimes he’d lose consciousness over the pain. Finally he quit trying to pull the tooth.

He couldn’t force himself to even try.

So he got the dog sled ready and traveled more than 200 miles to the closest dentist.

help for adoption families A new law, now in affect, will help address one of the biggest financial barriers to adoption by increasing the state tax credit for nonrecurring adoption expenses.

Rep. Erick Harris, R-Edmond, authored House Bill 2610, which raises the maximum credit percentage that may be received from 10% to 15% of expenses. Families pursuing adoption often face significant, upfront expenses long before a child is placed in their home, including legal fees, home studies, and travel and agency costs.

"Adoption is an incredibly meaningful way to build a family, but too many Oklahomans are weighed down by out-of-pocket costs that make it harder to say 'yes' when a child needs a home," Harris said.

"By increasing the adoption tax credit, we are making a tangible investment in Oklahoma's future and help more children find loving families."

Sen. Dave Rader, R-Tulsa, was the bill's primary Senate author.

"Oklahomans across the state become parents by opening their

hearts and homes to children in need," Rader said. "Increasing this tax credit helps support these loving families by easing the financial burden of the adoption process."

Oklahomans can begin applying for the increased tax credit in 2027.

Adoption expenses incurred on or after Jan. 1, 2026, will qualify for the increased credit amount, now up to 15% of expenses and capped at $3,000 for individuals and $6,000 for joint filers. If adoption expenses occurred prior to this date, the eligible taxpayer would qualify under the lower credit amount, previously 10% of expenses and capped at $2,000 for individuals and $4,000 for joint filers.

—— Sen. Grant Green, R-Wellston, welcomed the reopening of the I44/Turner Turnpike bridge over Route 66 following a yearlong reconstruction project by the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority.

The project replaced the more than 70-year-old Wellston bridge and expanded it to six lanes to accommodate the future expansion of the Turner Turnpike.

Green said the reopening brings welcome relief to residents and the owners of local businesses, including Butcher BBQ Stand and a nearby OnCue, which were impacted by the extended road closure.

“Local shops and restaurants are the backbone of Wellston, and reopening this bridge makes it clear that our town is open for business,” Green said. “Although the road closure presented challenges for the community, this upgraded infrastructure will make it easier than ever for Oklahomans and Route 66 enthusiasts alike to stop and explore Wellston.” The $48 million project was one of many included in the OTA’s 15-year ACCESS plan, which also includes widening the entire Turner Turnpike to six lanes.

“This project was a major undertaking, and I’m grateful for everyone who helped make it happen,” Green said. “It’s great to see the bridge looking better than ever as travel through Wellston returns to normal just in time for the Route 66 centennial.”

State seeks more control of public colleges Rep. Gabe Woolley, R-Broken Arrow, has filed House Joint Resolution 1037, a proposed constitutional amendment aimed at increasing public accountability and oversight of Oklahoma’s publicly funded colleges and universities.

HJR1037 would give lawmakers limited authority to temporarily freeze, suspend or withhold state-appropriated funding from institutions within the State System of Higher Education through a joint resolution, placing ultimate authority with Oklahoma voters.

"This measure, if passed, would allow the people of Oklahoma to hold our publicly funded universities and colleges accountable," Woolley said. "How tax dollars are utilized should always be subject to the will of the people."

Under the proposed amendment, any funding action would apply only to state-appropriated dollars and would not affect tuition, fees or private funds. Any freeze, suspension or withholding of funds would be limited to a maximum of two years, with funding automatically restored at the end of that period unless lawmakers take further

action. The Legislature would also have the ability to modify, extend within the allowed timeframe or terminate the action early.

"The practices that take place within our educational institutions have implications that reach every Oklahoman when graduates enter the workforce, the classroom or the public square," Woolley said. "We must make sure that entities using taxpayer dollars are working in the best interest of the people of Oklahoma."

Woolley said the resolution is intended to strengthen accountability while preserving voter control.

"Our universities and colleges should be grounded in truth, reality and science when it comes to academic content, school climate and culture," he said.

"A stronger system of accountability through the people of Oklahoma will help ensure quality education and responsible use of tax dollars."

HJR1037 must be approved by a majority of both the Oklahoma House of Representatives and the Oklahoma State Senate before being placed on a statewide ballot for voter consideration.

Election Calendar Modernization Law to Take Effect A new law modernizing Oklahoma’s election calendar will affect elections beginning in 2026 — bringing greater clarity, consistency and efficiency to when elections are held across the state.

Senate Bill 652 consolidates Oklahoma’s election dates into five standard election days each year, held in February, April, June, August and November. Previously, Oklahoma law allowed for up to 12 possible election dates in odd-numbered years and up to seven in even-numbered years.

Frequent, low-profile elections often draw a small fraction of registered voters while requiring significant time and resources from county election boards and poll workers.

The legislation was authored by Senate President Pro Tempore Lonnie Paxton, R-Tuttle, and was carried in the House by Rep. Mike Osburn, REdmond.

"Senate Bill 652 brings much needed clarity and consistency to Oklahoma’s election calendar," Paxton said. "By streamlining our elections to five set dates each year, we create a more predictable system for voters, election officials and local governments. Fewer, clearly defined election days will reduce confusion, improve administration and help boost voter turnout by making it easier for Oklahomans to know when elections are happening and plan to participate."

Osburn said these updates will reduce the number of obscure election days, helping voters more easily keep track of elections and making elections easier to staff.

"The existing patchwork system of election dates has often created confusion for voters, which contributes to low voter turnout," Osburn said.

The folks at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation know how to throw a party — and with famed band Three Dog Night — no less. In October, OMRF raised $870,000 from a golf tournament and a concert by Three Dog Night. Proceeds support medical research at the Oklahoma City nonprofit.

This was OMRF’s 12th year to hold the benefit. During that time, there has been $8.5 million to recruit and retain scientists and to help fund research projects.

There is nothing like an NBA Championship to trigger a great celebration and party. Shortly after winning the title, a parade was held in downtown Oklahoma City — drawing thousands of people who were still excited over the Oklahoma City Thunder and their win in the NBA Playoffs.

More taste than time?

Then check out tapas

By Carol Smaglinski Whether you are tired of the fancy dinners or the same old supper menu, which never seems to change at your house, turn to tapas, which has much to offer. It is an easy way to showcase many diverse tastes and textures and your imagination.

Tapas, always essential on menus in Spain - and available in many Edmond restaurants - can be a pre-dinner appetizer to get the party started or can be turned into a full dinner with a salad on the side.

They can be healthful, imaginative and vibrant showing off the colors and all of the flavors of Spain.

Tapas (tah pas) is much easier to pronounce than the French hors d’oeuvres, (pronounced “or derv,” with a silent “h”) which would send people running to their dictionaries for the correct spelling.

Tapas is not difficult. It can be as simple as opening up an 8-oz. square of cream cheese and mixing the cream cheese with salsa.

Or, serving olives or cooked succulent shrimp or small squares of a never-before tried cheese on a toothpick.

Tapas translates to “tarpar,” meaning “cover,” while tapa is the singular version.

Actually, tapas began when people drinking outside in good weather were constantly annoyed by flies and pesky insects that were taking nosedives into their drink glasses.

So rather than risk swallowing the bugs in the sherry, wine or cocktails, the glasses were covered with a piece of bread, a slice of meat or a saucer.

This also enabled the aroma of the wine to be kept in the glass.

When creating recipes for tapas in your kitchen, anchovies are imperative, so add some to your deviled eggs or egg salad next time and present the salad on small pieces of french bread toast. Or, wrap some olives up with the anchovies.

How about wrapping pitted dates

in bacon? Skewer with toothpicks and broil, turning once until the bacon is done. Also, try roasted asparagus wrapped with a slice of ham, but make sure the asparagus stays on the firm side so it can be easily picked up.

Otherwise, try chicken kabobs, done with skinless, boneless chicken thighs that are cut into one-inch chunks bursting with vibrant tastes.

Toss with minced garlic, chopped onion, lemon juice, olive oil, season with salt and pepper and herbs of your choice. Skewer. Broil, turning now and then until they are browned.

Hint: Rather than using toothpicks on finger food or other nibbles, present some pretzel sticks instead of toothpicks and let everyone pick up the miniature miniature meatballs, or squares of soft cheese with the pretzel sticks. Less mess.

Rosemary/Garlic Baked Mushroom Caps Makes 9 appetizers 9 regular-sized white button mushrooms with the stems removed and reserved for another recipe Olive oil 4 cloves of garlic, minced 1 cup Panko bread crumbs Fresh rosemary (fresh rosemary is stronger than powdered) 1 egg, lightly beaten Salt and pepper to taste Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Roll the fixed mushrooms around in the skillet with a little olive oil and remove to a bowl.

Add crumbs to the empty skillet and cook for a few minutes until they are golden. Remove, place in a bowl and let cool. Add the egg. Mix well adding rosemary, salt and pepper.

When ready to fill the mushrooms, grease a cookie sheet and use a regular teaspoon to fill the mushroom openings and by pressing the mixture down with your left thumb. Lay them on the cookie sheet, filling side up.

Bake for 15 minutes until mushrooms are tender.

Movie review of ‘We Bury the Dead’

Film loses momentum in the second half

By George Gust “We Bury the Dead” follows Ava (Daisy Ridley) as she searches for her missing husband after a catastrophic military disaster, causing the dead to not just rise, but hunt.

“We Bury the Dead” isn’t the kind of zombie movie you’ve seen a dozen times. It’s quieter and more reflective, a film that treats the undead as a device to explore grief rather than as an excuse for nonstop action. That choice gives the movie a different rhythm, sometimes thoughtful and effective, but mostly a little too gentle for its own good.

Ridley’s performance serves as the film’s anchor. She brings a steady, low-key intensity that keeps the story grounded. Her performance makes the character’s sorrow believable without tipping into melodrama, and she’s capable of carrying the quieter scenes with real presence. The supporting cast is serviceable too with little moments where the acting and small details cut through the film’s formulaic tendencies.

Visually, the movie looks pretty good. The cinematography is clear and purposeful, framing

loneliness and small domestic spaces in a way that supports the mood. Production design and color choices help sell the film’s melancholic tone, and the director shows a reliable eye for composition.

Where the film loses momentum is in the second half. It starts to feel like a slow-moving video game: a string of checkpoints and side quests that sap urgency rather than build it. For a movie with zombies in its DNA, the narrative becomes surprisingly sleepy. The lack of memorable set pieces or sustained tension makes the

story feel thin, and the human drama never quite grabs you by the collar.

Overall, the film’s compact 90-minute runtime is a blessing; it keeps the experience from overstaying its welcome. There’s something to admire about a movie that strips the genre down to its emotional core, and viewers who prefer mood and melancholy over spectacle will find things to like here.

But if you’re hoping for a fresh twist that fully pays off, either as a horror reinvention or a gripping family drama, “We Bury the Dead” doesn’t quite get there. It’s an interesting experiment with strong visuals and a committed lead, but it’s ultimately more of a quiet mood piece than a zombie film that sticks with you.

“We Bury the Dead” is rated R for strong violent content, gore, language and brief drug use.

During the year, Edmond’s newest and long-awaited wayfinding signs were installed at 100 locations directing citizens and residents to parks, attractions, schools and sports facilities. This project began in 2020 when American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding became available for tourism.

“Wayfinding has been on the City Council strategic plan since 2017,” said Randy Entz, who at the time was interim Edmond City Manager.

In mid year, the Edmond Board of Education was excited to announce Dr. Josh Delich as the 23rd Superintendent of Edmond Public Schools. He was selected following a nationwide search for the district’s next leader and was approved unanimously by the Edmond School Board. Delich considers the Edmond School District ‘the premier school district in the state.’

Being fit tops the goals for most people in 2026

By Brian Attebery It is a new year, and data already shows that getting fit is the number one goal for most people in 2026. I think that is fantastic but HOW do you approach it? What Attebery “diet” is the best way to go? Do you do yoga or Pilates or lift weights or maybe train for a marathon? There are multiple ways to go about fitness.

It is a “toolbox” and there are many “tools” to choose from. The question is what tool is appropriate for you and are you using the variety of tools you need to fix your issues?

The goal should be long term fitness. For most, it is weight loss oriented. A good rule of thumb is the faster you lose it, the faster it will come back on if you abandon the techniques you used to lose weight.

Did you do some extreme plans that are not sustainable? If you did, you would probably gain weight back. Be realistic. You need to gradually get stronger and increase muscle tone.

Muscle IS metabolism. Why do you think a sports car burns fuel quicker than an economy car? You want to increase your engine (muscle tone) so that you also burn calories quicker all the time.

For all of you that think that weight training bulks you up, you need to wake up to the reality of how hard that really is to do. Truly bulking up is few and far between and usually, it is not the presence of muscle that is making a new fitness enthusiast look bulky but the absence of body fat over the new muscle that has been added. Your issue is your diet and not the added muscle. This is when you need to address other concerns.

If your nutrition is not monitored, then how do you know what to change to succeed? You may be eat-

ing too little. You may be eating too much. You may be eating just the right number of calories, but your ratios of carbs, fats, and proteins are way off, and your hormones are out of sorts. This is why truly getting educated on nutrition and not following fads is essential for long term success. I consult people all the time on the hormonal affects of food and how timing of foods maximize success with your hormones and exercise. It is amazing to watch people look and feel better once they realize they were not maliciously doing something wrong but were simply misinformed on how the body works.

Cardio is also essential for success in weight loss. I know there have been some trends out there suggesting you don’t need cardio. The point for many of those people is that you can do cardio all you want but if your diet is off and you have no muscle, you won’t have long term success.

For me, it is not a “this” versus “that” discussion but a “this” AND “that” combo that is needed. Throw some classes in for variety and comradery and you begin seeing a lifestyle of fitness take shape.

We have 52 weeks in a year. I want you to take it week by week.

Understand that you will also have weeks, days, and maybe months that you fall off the diet or workout wagon for a minute or more. Just get back on it. Life is full of ups and downs. Good and bad. So is a LIFESTYLE of fitness. Take the good with the bad and know that it is always good to do something and eat some better than you did the week before. Start your journey today and be proud you are making the decision to make 2026 a better year for your health.

Starting a home based business Starting a home-based business can be a viable way to gain financial independence and pursue a passion. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, 50 percent of all businesses start at home. The SBA also reports that 60 percent of all businesses without staff are home-based.

While the process of starting a home-based business may seem daunting, it can be broken down into manageable steps. Here's how to navigate the journey successfully. · Identify a business idea. Individuals can assess their skills and passions as a starting off point for developing a home-based business. Then these passions can be paired with market research to determine if there is sufficient demand for the product or service. · Consider feasibility. It's important to evaluate if a business idea can be realistically run from home. Certain business ideas, such as freelance writing, are much more conducive to being done from home than a wedding catering business. · Compile a business plan. Every business should have a well written and concise business plan. A plan should include a summary of the mission and goals of the business, a detailed description of the business and its legal structure, target audience, a clear explanation of what is being offered to customers, and an estimate of costs, income and expenses. · Set it up legally. Even though the business may be home-based, this doesn't mean one should take shortcuts around the proper channels for establishing the business. Don’t give up on exercise If your New Year’s resolutions include exercising more, an Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation scientist has three words of advice.

“Give yourself grace,” said Zach Hettinger, Ph.D., a muscle biologist in OMRF’s Aging and Metabolism Research Program. “The main reason so many people give up on their fitness plan is that they set unrealistic expectations for themselves and feel deflated when they don’t fully meet them.”

Almost without fail, when Americans are polled about their New Year’s resolutions, starting a workout routine is the top response, followed closely by eating a healthier diet and saving more money.

However, those good intentions typically don’t last. Forbes Health asked 1,000 Americans in October 2023 about the resolutions they’d made 10 months earlier. The average “give-up” date: April 22.

That may help explain this statistic from a 2020 survey by another research firm: 59% of adults under age 35 said they’d made a resolution, compared to 19% of those 55 and over. Perhaps the latter group has simply grown weary of failing at previous resolutions.

And yet, older adults are precisely who Hettinger encourages to stay committed to exercise. His lab studies the cumulative effects of a sedentary lifestyle on skeletal muscle.

“With exercise, or really or any major positive lifestyle change, it’s crucial to create a new habit,” Hettinger said. “One way we do that is by setting

manageable benchmarks along the way. If a person decides their goal is to run a marathon, most likely they’ll give up unless they’ve established incremental goals.”

He said molecular function within our muscle and organs responds differently to exercise for each person, especially as we age. Better understanding those differences is the main point of a five-year OMRF study involving older people, said Sue Bodine, Ph.D., one of two OMRF scientists helping oversee the study.

“If we can determine why someone isn’t responding to a particular exercise protocol, perhaps we can tailor it to meet their specific needs,” Bodine said.

The study seeks healthy people age 60 and over who currently exercise less than twice a week. Participation requires a 22-week commitment to rigorous, thrice-weekly workouts in OMRF’s fitness center. It includes a free personal trainer, regular metabolic blood panels and tests to determine changes in body composition, muscle mass, cardiovascular stamina and cognitive ability.

Above all, Hettinger stressed, it’s important to set realistic goals — and then be prepared to cut ourselves some slack when life inevitably interferes with those plans.

“We all stumble,” he said. "What matters is that we dust ourselves off and keep going when that happens."
