What Christmas means to people around the world As December’s chill settles in and twinkling lights appear in windows from Edmond to Edinburgh, the world prepares for Christmas, a holiday that transcends borders, languages, and beliefs. For billions, Hibbard Christmas is more than a date on the calendar; it is a season of hope, generosity, and connection. But what does Christmas truly mean to people around the globe? The answer is as varied and vibrant as the cultures that celebrate it.

In Oklahoma, Christmas is a time for families to gather, share stories, and create magical memories. Parents go to great lengths to bring joy to their children, knowing that the effort is worth every smile. Classic tales like “The Gift of the Magi” and “A Christmas Carol” are read aloud, teaching lessons of sacrifice, charity, and the true spirit of giving. Children’s books, from the Berenstain Bears to Dr. Seuss’s “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” remind us that the holiday’s meaning lies not in gifts, but in kindness and togetherness.

Across the United States, Christmas traditions range from decorating trees and singing carols to volunteering at shelters and attending midnight Mass. In Edmond, local schools and community groups host concerts, pageants, and charity drives, bringing people together in celebration and service. The Oklahoma State Capitol echoes with the voices of students singing carols, a testament to the power of music and community.

But Christmas is not just an American affair. In Mexico, families celebrate with “Las Posadas,” reenacting Mary and Joseph’s search for shelter.

In Germany, children await the arrival of Christkind, while in Italy, La Befana brings gifts on Epiphany. In the Philippines, the world’s longest Christmas season begins in September, with lantern festivals and midnight feasts. Each tradition, whether solemn or joyful, reflects the values and hopes of its people.

For Christians, Christmas marks the birth of Jesus, a moment of profound spiritual significance. Churches from Rome to Rio de Janeiro are filled with worshippers, candles flicker in silent prayer, and choirs sing

Luke 2:10-11: “But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.’”

Matthew 1:21: “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

Isaiah 9:6: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” hymns of peace. Yet, Christmas has also become a secular celebration, embraced by people of many faiths and none. In Japan, where only a small percentage are Christian, Christmas is a time for romance and friendship, with couples exchanging gifts and enjoying festive cakes.

In Africa, Christmas is celebrated with vibrant music, dance, and communal meals. Villages come alive with color and laughter, and the holiday is often a time for reconciliation and forgiveness. In Australia, Christmas falls in summer, so families gather for barbecues on the beach, and Santa sometimes arrives by surfboard.

What unites these diverse celebrations is a shared longing for connection. Christmas, at its heart, is about coming together whether around a dinner table, a church altar, or a community stage. It is a time to reach out to those in need, to mend broken relationships, and to remember those who are absent.

Psychologists suggest that the rituals of Christmas like gift-giving, storytelling, and feasting help people process collective anxieties and foster hope. In a world often divided by conflict and uncertainty, the holiday offers a moment of unity and reflection. Even those who do not celebrate Christmas find meaning in its message of goodwill and generosity.

Of course, Christmas is not without its challenges. For some, the season brings loneliness or financial stress. The commercialization of the holiday can overshadow its deeper meanings, turning joy into obligation.

Yet, even in hardship, people find ways to celebrate through simple acts of kindness, shared meals, or quiet moments of gratitude.

Recent years have seen new traditions emerge. Virtual gatherings connect families separated by distance, and communities rally to support those affected by illness or loss. The pandemic reminded us that the true spirit of Christmas is resilience in the ability to adapt, to care, and to hope.

Reflections from Edmond and Beyond In Edmond, as in countless towns worldwide, Christmas is a time to pause, reflect, and dream. The stories we tell of Scrooge’s redemption, of the Magi’s gifts, of the Grinch’s change of heart remind us that transformation is possible, and that love is the greatest gift of all.

From bustling cities to quiet villages, from snowy landscapes to sunlit beaches, Christmas means many things to many people. It is a tapestry woven from faith, family, tradition, and imagination. As we celebrate, let us remember that the holiday’s true meaning lies not in what we receive but in what we give: compassion, understanding, and hope for a brighter future.

As we celebrate another Christmas, may we carry its spirit with us, not just for a day, but throughout the year. May we find joy in small moments, strength in adversity, and connection in community. And may the message of Christmas, peace on earth, goodwill to all, resonate in every heart, everywhere.

In this season of joy and hope, the entire team here at Edmond Life & Leisure wish you and your family much peace and happiness this Christmas. I am pleased that our community has emerged kinder this year. However, we have such a long way to go in our community. Our words should be softer to others, especially for those we might disagree with my friends. Please join me in making Edmond kinder and more gentle in the words of former U.S. President Bush.

Santa knows how to brighten the day for the little ones.

Santa sees children at Integris Santa Claus made a special visit to INTEGRIS Health Children’s at Baptist Medical Center this holiday season, spending time with patients and families throughout the hospital as part of an annual tradition focused on bringing moments of joy during a hospital stay.

During the visit, Santa stopped to greet patients, visit with families and caregivers, and take photos, offering a welcome distraction and a sense of holiday celebration for those spending the season away from home.

“The holiday season can be especially challenging for families spending time in the hospital, and one of

our goals is to help normalize the hospital experience. Santa plays a special part in making this possible, bringing moments of joy and hope during difficult times,” said Ashley Ochs, a child life specialist. "That’s why this tradition was created, to ensure children and families can still experience the magic of the season, even while in the hospital."

The Santa visit is one of many efforts at INTEGRIS Health Children’s to support patients beyond medical care, recognizing the importance of emotional well-being for both children and their families during the holidays.

Regional Food Bank having Holiday Match drive Oklahoma consistently ranks as one of the hungriest states in the nation. This holiday season, donations to fight hunger in Oklahoma are doubled in impact thanks to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma’s Holiday Match. Through Jan. 15, all donations will be matched, up to $350,000, thanks to presenting sponsor APMEX and with support from the Cresap Family Foundation.

“For us, the holidays have always meant gathering around a table filled with good food and laughter. Sadly, many of our neighbors across Oklahoma are facing empty tables this season. You can help change that,” said John Cresap, president at the Cresap Family Foundation. “Join us in supporting the Regional Food Bank and help fill the plates of fellow Oklahomans.”

The Regional Food Bank can provide three meals for every $1 donated. During the match,

every dollar will help provide six meals to Oklahomans living with hunger.

“The holiday season is typically a season of celebration and joy, but the holidays can also lead to stress, especially for Oklahomans living with hunger,” said Stacy Dykstra, chief executive officer at the Regional Food Bank. “The holiday match is a perfect time to make a tax-deductible donation to help provide much needed meals and nutrition to our neighbors.”

These donations can act as a lifeline to Oklahomans like Kristopher, who receives food assistance from our partner, Loaves & Fishes Food & Resource Center in Enid.

Kristopher is on a disability after being hit by a semi-truck several years ago, and his wife has also been on disability for the last 10-15 years. Despite these hurdles, Kristopher has his eyes set on the fu-

ture and is now working towards a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He is so grateful for the variety of food he’s been able to get for his family through pantries like Loaves & Fishes, especially for their 18-year-old son.

“Thanks to you, big thanks! Because this is saving us! It’s the difference between being really, really hungry and actually having something to make.”

What to do when power goes out

By Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner Glen Mulready In December 2007, Oklahoma experienced one of the most devastating ice storms in its history.

The storm caused at least $200 million in damage statewide, and at the peak of the event, more than 641,000 Oklahomans were without power. For thousands, outages lasted more than a week.

When the lights go out, so do the tools we rely on every day. Without electricity or internet access, simple tasks can become challenging, and in today's connected world, the impact is even more significant than it was a few decades ago.

That's why I urge Oklahomans to make technology and power disruptions a core part of their disaster preparedness plans.

Keep hard copies of essential documents and cash on hand.

One of the most important steps you can take is storing hard copies of your essential documents. Your emergency kit should include items such as Social Security cards, passports, birth certificates, driver's licenses, prescriptions and insurance policies. Keep them in a fire-resistant, waterproof container so you can access vital information during power or internet outages. Be sure to take these documents with you if you must leave your home. Always keep some cash on hand in case payment systems are down and using debit or credit cards becomes impossible.

Create a backup internet plan.

We depend on the internet for everything from banking and insurance to communication and navigation. Consider having a backup source of connectivity in case your primary internet service goes down. Mobile hotspots or satellitebased options can help you stay connected during outages. It's also wise to keep printed maps and a list of emergency phone numbers for your family, just in case digital tools aren't available.

Identify additional power sources.

Having access to power during an outage can make all the difference. Invest in a generator to keep your home running during prolonged disruptions. Portable power banks are also an affordable way to keep your phone and other small devices charged. Ensure you have a variety of batteries for flashlights, radios, and other essential devices.

Review your insurance policies.

Preparedness isn't complete without reviewing your insurance coverage. Your policies should reflect the risks we face in Oklahoma. Be familiar with key coverages such as loss of use, which helps pay for living expenses if your home becomes uninhabitable due to covered damage. Remember: losses from floods or earthquakes typically require separate policies.

Oklahoma's weather is unavoidable, but preparing for technology and power outages can make recovery faster, safer and less stressful. Taking a few simple steps now can help protect your family in the event of the next major disaster.

Family, Integris celebrate Malachi, the Christmas miracle baby Mattie and Joshua Davis of Oklahoma City consider their son, Malachi, a Christmas miracle.

While the outcome was everything they ever wanted, they anticipate this holiday season will be more joy filled than the last.

Early Delivery Dec. 26, 2024, began like any other day. The glow of Christmas still lingered in their home, and the young couple were filled with anticipation, dreaming about the arrival of their baby in the coming months.

But by the afternoon, everything changed. Mattie was rushed to the hospital. She had gone into premature labor. Less than 24 hours later, their son, Malachi, was born at just 22 weeks, weighing barely over a pound. He was impossibly small, his life hanging by a thread. Mattie held him for only a moment, his tiny body fitting into the palm of her hand before he was whisked away to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at INTEGRIS Health Children’s inside INTEGRIS Health Baptist Medical Center. A team of caregivers surrounded him, working tirelessly to give him a fighting chance.

Tiny Fighter For the first eight days, Malachi held on. But on day nine, his condition took a devastating turn.

Doctors gathered the Davis family and gently prepared them for the worst. The odds of survival for a baby born this early were heartbreakingly slim.

Mattie and Joshua were in shock. “Seeing how many wires and tubes were keeping him alive, and how tiny he was — it just didn’t feel real,” Mattie recalled.

In the weeks that followed, Malachi’s health remained unstable, but on day 28, it sharply declined. The hospital called the Davis family throughout the night with updates, each one more urgent than the last. By 6:00 a.m., the final call came. The young couple raced to the hospital, bracing themselves to say goodbye.

The Miracle As Mattie held her son, for only the second time, her heart broke with the fear it might be the last time. But then, something miraculously changed. Against all odds, Malachi’s condition began to improve the next day. Slowly, steadily, he began to grow stronger. Each milestone brought renewed hope. And with time, Mattie and Joshua were finally able to hold their son—not just in fear, but in love.

Donations Matter Thanks to donor-funded kangaroo care chairs in every NICU room at the hospital, Malachi’s parents could cradle him with skin-to-skin contact.

This simple act—proven to regulate a baby’s body temperature, heart rate and breathing—helped them bond and helped Malachi heal.

Because of the generosity of donors, Mattie and Joshua no longer had to connect with their son through the glass of an isolette crib. They could hold him, comfort him and be part of his journey toward health.

A medical reason why some act like Scrooge?

Whether you feel a bit like Ebenezer Scrooge this holiday season or you crave the good feelings that accompany generosity, the cause may stem, at least in part, from your hormones and the chemicals in your brain.

That’s the assessment of a pair of Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation scientists.

Research has linked stinginess to testosterone. It’s a predominantly male hormone, which may explain the extreme miserliness of Scrooge, whose name remains synonymous with greed nearly 200 years after the publication of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.”

In a 2009 study, researchers applied either a testosterone cream or a placebo cream to male college student volunteers. They then tested the generosity of both groups by giving each student $10 and having them split the money with another participant however they wished.

The results: Those on the testosterone cream gave 27% less to their fellow participants than those on the placebo cream. A more potent variant of testosterone showed even more dramatic effects, as those with the highest levels in their bloodstream gave their study partner an average of 55 cents, compared to $3.65 given by those with the lowest amounts.

“The subjects were randomized and were ‘blind’ to whether they were using the real hormone

cream or the placebo,” said OMRF physician-scientist Hal Scofield, M.D. “In scientific research, that’s the gold standard for assuring reliable results.”

Another factor in Scrooge’s stinginess could have been dopamine, which acts as a neurotransmitter for the brain’s reward system, said Mike Beckstead, Ph.D., who holds the Hille Family Foundation Chair in Neurodegenerative Disease Research at OMRF. “Dopamine is more designed to signal immediate gratification, while the rewards of generosity are more delayed,” said Beckstead, who studies the brain chemical in his lab at OMRF. “Dopamine would teach you that if you spent $100 on a gift for somebody, that’s a net negative to you, because the immediate act of giving is that you’re $100 poorer.”

Conversely, Beckstead said, high levels of two other brain chemicals, serotonin and oxytocin, would lead someone toward generosity.

“Serotonin promotes mood and well-being, while oxytocin is often called the brain’s love chemical.

It’s focused on trust and social connection and intimacy,” Beckstead said.

This isn’t true only in humans.

Several studies have found that oxytocin drives mammals like elephants and dogs to show altruism toward distressed animals of the same species. Earlier this year, sci-

entists found that mice do the same thing.

“Those stories you hear about dolphins protecting swimmers from sharks – that’s altruism,” Beckstead said. “And the main brain chemicals involved with that are serotonin and oxytocin.”

Both OMRF scientists cautioned that neither high levels of testosterone and dopamine, nor low levels of the altruistic brain chemicals, doom anyone to a lifetime of stinginess.

“Studies have shown that generosity is both innate and a learned behavior,” Scofield said.

we seldom regret being generous. The regret usually stems from not learning that lesson earlier in life.”

Dozens of book bags await distribution at the OKC Indian Clinic.

Clinic embraces season of giving Oklahoma City Indian Clinic (OKCIC) is proud to celebrate the continued success of its 2025 Warm & Fuzzy Program, an award-winning, employee-supported initiative that provides essential support to American Indian families throughout the year. Through voluntary payroll deductions, employee donations, and countless volunteer hours, staff members came together to purchase and distribute resources that made a meaningful difference in the lives of patients and their families.

By helping meet basic needs such as food, clothing, and school supplies, the Warm & Fuzzy program plays an important role in addressing social determinants of health that can impact a patient’s overall well-being.

During the Warm & Fuzzy: Toy Wonderland event held last week, OKCIC staff and volunteers gave out more than 200 toys to 97 families, helping ensure children experience joy and celebration during the holiday season. In addition, the Warm & Fuzzy ThankFULL Baskets initiative in November provided 150 families with full Thanksgiving meal baskets, complete with turkeys and all the fixings.

The program also hosted a Winter Coat Giveaway in October, supplying coats to younger patients to help keep them warm during colder months.

The Warm & Fuzzy program’s impact extended throughout the year. In August, the program supported OKCIC’s Children’s Health Fair, where over 300 children received backpacks filled with school supplies to prepare them for the upcoming school year.

“These efforts are made possible entirely through the compassion and commitment of our staff,” said Angie Reeves, Director of Communications & Community Development. “Month after month, employees choose to give through payroll deductions and individual gifts, and those small, consistent acts of kindness add up to something truly meaningful for our families. A spirit of generosity runs throughout Oklahoma City Indian Clinic.”

Bill would boost public comments at meetings Senator Brian Guthrie, R-Bixby, filed legislation last week to update the Oklahoma Open Meeting Act to require all public bodies to provide a reasonable opportunity for public comment on agenda items before any official action is taken.

“Too often, public matters are discussed and effectively decided without public input,” Guthrie said. “This legislation strikes a balance between transparency and efficiency, ensuring the public has the opportunity, ahead of any action, to express their views on an agenda item and share how potential action on that item may impact their communities, home, or livelihoods.”

Under Senate Bill 1252, public bodies would have the authority to impose time limits or require members of the public to sign up to speak before an agenda item is heard, helping ensure meetings are conducted fairly and efficiently.

UCO Foundation Scholarship portal open for 2026-27 academic year The University of Central Oklahoma Foundation has opened its scholarship application portal for the 2026-27 academic year, providing current and incoming students the opportunity to apply for more than 450 donor-funded awards that support academic success, student leadership and transformative learning.

Through the portal, students can complete a single streamlined application to be considered for numerous scholarships made possible by the generosity of alumni, donors and friends of the university. Awards range from need-based assistance to discipline-specific, leadership and meritbased scholarships.

The foundation’s scholarship program plays a vital role in UCO’s commitment to meeting students where they are and supporting their movement toward graduation and career readiness.

Last year, the foundation awarded more than $1.4 million in scholarships to 1,198 students across all colleges, helping ease financial barriers and empower students to focus on their studies.

The application is open to continuing students and newly admitted students planning to attend UCO for the 2026-27 academic year.

Students are encouraged to apply early and thoroughly review eligibility requirements for individual scholarships.

Embracing the spirit of giving Whether it’s baking cookies and other sweet treats for classmates or giving his time and resources to support others, William McNeely believes small acts of kindness can McNeely make a real difference.

This holiday season, McNeely has sought out ways to support his peers at Francis Tuttle Technology Center. His generosity has included multiple donations to the on-campus food closet, participation in the Adopt-A-Family program, and contributions to a blanket drive organized by the Teacher Preparation program.

McNeely and his classmates in the Aviation program also took part in Money Wars, which raised a record $4,482.13 this year in support of Adopt-A-Family.

At the beginning of the semester, McNeely baked a batch of peanut butter cookies because he wanted to do something nice for his class.

Since then, he’s kept making cookies, cakes, muffins, and other treats to share.

“Life can be hard sometimes, and I don't want to make it any harder for anybody,” McNeely shared.

“Even a small act of kindness here and there can give somebody motivation to keep going. I just generally enjoy doing good things for people.”

McNeely first attended Francis

Tuttle’s Service Careers Grounds Keeping and Automotive Maintenance program, earning a certification for Honda engines repair. He completed that program and also graduated from Edmond North High School in May 2025.

This year, he enrolled in the new Aviation program, which provides training to high school and adult students in sheet metal fabrication and repair, composites fabrication and repair, and drone piloting.

This program complements Francis Tuttle’s other Aerospace Technologies offerings, which have been available to adult students for several years.

There are “so many opportunities” in aviation, and McNeely is hoping to work in manufacturing, fabrication, or maintenance. Having family members who work in aviation influenced McNeely’s decision to pursue a career in the industry as well.

“They did their full A&P certification, which stands for airframe and powerplant and is basically a repair certification for aircraft,” McNeely explained. “I thought I’d follow in their footsteps and try to get the same thing someday.”

McNeely, who credits his parents for instilling the importance of giving back from a young age, hopes to encourage others to help those in need when they can.

“I just hope to motivate people to also do the same,” McNeely said.

“I’m still finding good ways to do more.”

The portal is open now through Feb. 6, 2026.

To apply, students should visit scholarships.uco.edu and log in with their UCO credentials. Incoming students must be admitted to the university to be eligible to apply.

UCO is currently accepting applications for admission for fall 2026. In addition to foundation scholarships, incoming freshmen and transfer students will be automatically awarded academic scholarships, pending eligibility, upon submission of a completed online application and all required admissions documents by Feb. 1, 2026.

Commentary ... We’re on YOUR Side Possible 2026 legislation Senator Lankford As the old year draws to a close – 2026 already is promising one thing — a host of new state bills to consider for next year.

Some of them we already have listed in last week’s Steve Gust edition. The insurance companies may witness some reforms. One thing I’d like to see is commonsense when it comes to filing a claim on your home. I recognize that a homeowner may not get everything they want when it comes to claims. That’s only fair. Not every claim is legitimate. But what I don’t get is when a company cancels a policy because someone has filed multiple claims (Sometimes only two) in a five-year period. Doesn’t appear fair.

Another new law we might see pertains to public comment. Under the Open Meetings Act officials would have to grant “a reasonable public comment periods.” It seems to me that most public meetings do that now. I don’t necessarily have a problem with it. I’m all for trans-

parency. There have to be some restrictions – such as time. And where do you draw the line on people cussing? Or screaming? And surely people don’t have the right to personally insult board or council members? Maybe they do. The courts and the legislature may have to address that. The meetings, as they are, can go on for quite a long time.

And a new law would also allow members of the public to record a meeting if they wanted. I don’t see anything wrong with that.

There also will be attention given to illegal immigrants. One bill wants drivers seeking commercial licenses to have basic English skills. Not a bad idea.

I don’t know how, or why, California and Gov. Gavin Newsom issued CDLs to people who couldn’t read English and weren’t citizens.

And there is a chance we may get to vote on sports betting legalization.

That’s been in the works for years.

“Obviously, the Covid pandemic is over. That plus up is going away, and it's exposing the real issues within Obamacare. That's the challenge that we're facing just in my state. We took a sixyear snapshot. The Obamacare market-

places went up 198% during that time period. Normal insurance, commercial insurance for everybody else went up 29% during that time period.

“There are real structural problems in Obamacare that had just been hidden with one subsidy after another after another, to try to hide the problems that are there.

On Venezuela’s Illegitimate Regime, Sanctions, and US Action: “Well, I would tell you, the Venezuelan people do [want regime change].

They voted against Maduro in the last election. tell you, the United States’ position for now six years I believe, has been that he is not the recognized leader of Venezuela. We've supported the opposition leaders, the past two opposition leaders, in Venezuela…

“Arms is a different issue. That's a very different issue on that issue. If you break it, you buy it. We've seen that when we pushed out the leadership in Libya and it's just a collapsed, failed state at this point.

On the Meaning of Christmas as God Coming Personally to Be With Us: “…Connect with people. There's two things here. First, families and individuals need to find people that they see around them. They're isolated, alone.

There are folks that have lost a loved one. They've lost a spouse or lost a child, or that they are very, very alone during this holiday season.

“This is a really hard time because every time they turn on the TV, there's pictures of families getting together, pictures of everything else, and they don't have that.

“So reaching out to those folks, just touching base with them, inviting them into your gatherings, giving them a phone call. Tracking those folks just to say, ‘Hey, I see you and I'm praying for you, or I want to be able to encourage you or bring a meal to you.’ Those things are incredibly significant.

Mullin secures millions in funding for military in state Last week, U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin (ROK), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, voted YES on the Fiscal Year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Within the legislation, Senator Mullin advocated for Oklahoma’s premier military bases and helped secure an abundance of wins for the state’s installations— totaling $670.3 million dollars for the Sooner State.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to represent Oklahoma and the many world-class military installations we have in our state. While serving on the Senate Armed Services Committee, I’m grateful to be able to fight for our bases and the future of Oklahoma’s defense capabilities. Oklahoma is vital to maintaining our military’s readiness and lethality,” said Senator Mullin. “The NDAA is a monumental step towards reforming the Pentagon and ensuring our servicemembers have the technology and weapons they need to face tomorrow’s challenges head-on. I’m proud the Senate pushed it across the finish line.”

The FY26 NDAA is not just full of wins for our military, it’s also full of wins for Oklahoma. Tinker Air Force Base will be authorized $497,000,000 for acquiring property and base construction and has extended FY23 authorized projects by $30,000,000. The Senate has also authorized funding for hangar construction, a childhood development center, and a squadron operations center at Tinker, totaling $79,000,000.

By Carol Smaglinski Recognize the following Twenty Dollar words?

They all contain the suffix “ology” which means “the study of.”

Just a few of them: biology, which is the study of life; archaeology, the investigation of past cultures; microbiology, research into microorganisms and bacteria; and paleontology, dealing with fossils.

That leads to zoology, the study of animals; and anthropology, which examines our human forms.

One not mentioned is bromatology, a term which is applied to the study of food. It is something we do everyday - but in much simpler ways.

Ah, but there are so many secrets to the art of cooking. One might be dealing with an arrogant chef who demands that his or her recipes be kept top secret, or it could be your ex-mother-in-law who gave you her son’s favorite recipe except for one imperative ingredient.

In regards to the science of cooking with today’s technology, a good detective can soon find out just about anything they want to know.

Cooking begins when you start thinking about it, then goes on with shopping, the prep work and cooking and the final presentation at the table.

Note that all recipes do not work; some use too many herbs and spices and destroy the outcome.

That is why it is best to do a recipe once, and if it is not to your satisfaction, change it to what you and your family yearn for instead.

Let’s take a peek at potatoes.

Eaten by mankind for subsistence for almost 3,000 years, potatoes, which only grow in the dark, were a big part of everyone’s culinary experience.

But the poor potato had a rough start. Preachers in Scotland denounced the spuds because they were not mentioned in the Bible. Plus, in the15th century, the reigning Pope denounced it as an “Apple of Love” and churchgoers were warned to avoid the aphrodisiac vegetable for their salvation. Potatoes were also blamed for leprosy. Soon enough, this tender-hearted vegetable was turned into the beloved crunchy french fry.

Rumors persist that when Napoleon died on May 5, 1821, the only food he would eat was pommes frites. In France, pommes frites (pom FREET) are strips of potatoes that are fried once, removed from the fat, and then fried again to turn golden and crisp. What a way to go!

The following recipe for potato pancakes is not quite like the one we ate on most Fridays, when we abstained from eating meat. Yet, my four sisters, Joan, Geralyn, Barbara, Chris and I were so active outdoors as kids that none of us turned into couch potatoes. We only ran back home when the church bells rang.

The following potato pancakes are great with a dab of sour cream and a side of applesauce. Let the eggs warm up a bit before starting the recipe.

The recipe is good for six servings.

Potato Pancakes 3 large eggs, separated in two bowls 4 cups well-drained grated potatoes 6 Tbsp. grated onions 3 Tbsp. very fine breadcrumbs Salt and pepper to taste A good pinch or more of cayenne pepper Peanut oil Separate the eggs and beat the whites until stiff.

In another bowl, mix together the yolks, drained and shredded potatoes, onions, breadcrumbs, cayenne, salt and pepper.

Then gently fold the whites into the potato mixture. Heat oil in a skillet. Place a heaping teaspoon of the potato mixture in the pan, press down to flatten a bit and carefully with a spatula, flip once and cook until golden on both sides.

Author has advice on how to enjoy parties It’s officially the most wonderful time of the year…but many of us aren’t exactly feeling wonderful. slip in a few deviled eggs for breakfast. The time for restraint is not now.

Snow removal. Varicose veins. The old Swedish performance team or rabid racoon dishwasherloading debate. The truth is…boring is interesting when it’s honest.”

Turn complaints into connection. Complaining is second nature and also a superpower. Don’t suppress it. Turn grievances into stories that have people saying, “OH MY GOD, YES. I am not alone.” Menopause, misery, and mothers-in-law.

A reel or story will never capture what it’s like to lock eyes and smile with a stranger over cocktail weenies as you realize you’re wearing the same ugly holiday house sweater.

You probably won’t find many people happy about their financial burden’s associated with health care. As a gym owner and fitness expert, what frustrates me is Attebery the disconnect people have with their need for fitness and how it has a direct effect on their bottom line. You can SAVE money by investing in your health.

One of the common reasons people quit the gym is “not having time” or “trying to save money.” I understand time management is difficult, but I would say there is a difference between a “cost” and an “investment”. Your healthcare of fitness is the most important investment you can make. Yes, you will fall off the wagon here and there. Welcome to being normal. Quitting just assures you never do it. I also agree that most will stick with plans if they are successful and that is when my bias of saying that “knowledge is power” and having an actual fitness expert help you design a fitness and nutrition plan will lead to greater success than just a cheap membership where an 18-year-old kid showed you around the gym. Knowing how to operate the equipment is not the same thing as having a program designed for your specific needs, but I digress.

Physical inactivity is a massive portion of healthcare spending in the U.S. Estimates are currently around $192 BILLION annually! Figures show that this translates into inactive adults spending nearly $2000 more per year per person on healthcare than those that are making fitness a priority. A family of four can workout at my facility and have access to dozens of group exercise classes for only $60 per month. Sounds to me like a person CAN’T afford to be in-

active. So ironic!

I want you to understand that I agree that making fitness a priority can be overwhelming. I truly do understand. That is why it is so important to arm yourself MENTALLY with how important this is for starters. You need to sit down and look at your schedule and find time. You need to visualize how a more fit YOU will feel mentally and physically. You need to imagine having energy, muscle tone, and reducing your anxiety and stress in a natural way. Perhaps it is just two days per week. Well, that is 104 workouts per year! Fantastic!

Our politicians can argue all day about cost of healthcare and all the magic answers but I am telling you that obesity is associated with 33 major illnesses and since obesity is defined as a “preventable” disease, we need to spend more time taking responsibility for our role in reducing costs and quit looking for someone to fund it due to our lack of personal responsibility. Type II Diabetes has a 90% correlation with obesity and Type II is 90% of ALL diabetes. So, most of the diabetes would not be an issue if we ate properly and exercised regularly. I have dozens of clients that turned their diabetes around simply by doing what I taught them to do. I can promise you that none of them thought it would be better to save a few bucks by quitting their gym costs in exchange for the burdens of diabetes.

We will turn our attitudes about fitness around when we start realizing that being able to engage in fitness is a privilege and not a burden.

Your body takes care of you, and you need to take care of it. Don’t wait until it is too late to prioritize your health. Your health investment is the most important one you can make.

Review of movie ‘The Housemaid’

An entertaining film, but note rating

By George Gust Paul Feig returns to the glossy, trashy thriller lane he showed in “One Simple Favor”, but with a slightly more theatrical touch. “The Housemaid” leans into the same mix of style and mischief with suburban polish, messy secrets, and escalating tension, while feeling more cinematic than the Lifetime/Netflix style knockoffs that have crowded the genre in recent years. It wears its influences openly, nodding to 80s– 90s female-led thrillers like “Single White Female” and “Fatal Attraction,” but it aims higher than the usual streaming comfort food.

“The Housemaid” is based on the runaway bestselling novel of the same name, and follows a struggling woman (Sydney Sweeney) who is happy start over as a housemaid for an affluent elite couple (Amanda Seyfried & Brandon Sklenar).

The film looks and sounds great. Feig stages scenes with care, using small domestic Instagram-able details to build real unease. The screenplay keeps the novel’s twisty momentum, and the surprises mostly land because the movie trusts you to follow along. Produc-

tion design and pacing help the tension grow naturally. A few plot beats rely on familiar genre shortcuts, and some supporting characters could use more development. At times the movie leans into melodrama in ways that undercut the suspense instead of heightening it, but those moments are smaller distractions than fatal flaws.

Amanda Seyfried is the standout. She makes bold choices that keep you guessing; her performance is full of little surprises that change how you read a

scene. It’s the kind of turn that rewards attention and makes the film more interesting than it might have been. Sydney Sweeney is solid and, importantly, well cast. Where she’s been divisive in the past, here she brings a grounded, “regular person” quality that helps anchor the story. The supporting cast adds texture and friction, even if a couple of roles feel a bit thin.

If you go in wanting to be entertained rather than fooled, “The Housemaid” is more fun than you might expect. The novel’s twist-driven energy translates well to screen, and Feig’s direction gives the material a theatrical polish that lifts it above many modern imitators. It’s not perfect, there are moments of excess and a few underwritten characters, but it’s stylish counterprogramming to the bigger blockbusters of the season, offering a thrilling reminder that the domestic thriller can still deliver when handled with craft and a little deliciously bad taste.

The 2026 series will continue the popular monthly 90-minute seminars while adding two daylong learning sessions designed to allow for deeper exploration, discussion and hands-on engagement. Higher speed limit on parts of Turnpike Widening of the Turner Turnpike from Bristow to Kellyville will feature an 80mph speed limit when the project officially opens next spring according to OTA officials. Crypto scams prompt new law Digital banking and investing have become commonplace in our society, and the use of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are becoming more mainstream as well. As securities regulators, we know that wherever money goes financial fraud may soon follow.

In its 2024 Internet Crime Report, the Federal Bureau of Investigation says that “cryptocurrency has become an enticing means to cheat investors, launder proceeds, and engage in other illicit activities.” We’re seeing that in Oklahoma and across the nation.

Oklahoma recently took a significant step toward preventing crypto fraud with the passage of Senate Bill 1083. This new law, which took effect November 1, implements the state’s first regulations on cryptocurrency ATMs, providing important consumer safeguards for use of this technology.

Cryptocurrency ATMs allow a person to purchase cryptocurrencies with cash or debit card and can be

used by scam artists to facilitate the fleecing of a victim’s funds. Once fed into the machine, the victim’s money is converted to crypto, transmitted to the scammer and likely never seen again.

The new Oklahoma law requires cryptocurrency ATM operators to be licensed as a money transmitter pursuant to the Oklahoma Financial Transaction Reporting Act, which sets forth reporting requirements and incorporates fraud prevention measures. It’s our hope that this new law will bring accountability and consumer protections to a previously unregulated method of money transfer.

A recent case in Florida is a perfect example of how cryptocurrency ATMs can be used to facilitate fraud. The incident began with a fraudulent computer pop-up warning the victim that his bank accounts were in danger. Scammers posing as legitimate offi-

Staying healthy during the traveling season The holiday season is always a busy time of year for the travel industry, and 2025 figures to be no exception. A November report from CNN indicated that the aviation analytics firm Cirium reported that passenger booking on major airlines for Thanksgiving were up by 2.22 percent from a year earlier, when holiday travel reached a record high.

Traveling is indeed a key component of the holiday season for millions of people, and long lines at airports, crowded train stations and trains, and even heavily trafficked roadways are among the challenges such individuals must navigate as they aim to spend time with loved ones between now and the first week of January.

Finding ways to stay healthy while traveling is another challenge such individuals face. While that can be difficult, travelers can look to various strategies to stay healthy when taking to the rails, roads or friendly skies this holiday season.

· Take some creature comforts to ensure a good night's rest. The Clayton Sleep Institute reports that as much as 80 percent of travelers report sleeping worse while traveling than they do at home. Jet lag, general weariness and unique sleeping environments can compromise travelers' ability to get sufficient and quality rest while away from home.

When possible, taking some creature comforts along, such as the pillow you sleep on at home, can facilitate better rest on the road. That can promote a healthier holiday season, as the Mayo Clinic notes people who don't get enough sleep are more likely to get sick after exposure to a virus, including the common cold. · Do some homework on nutrition. Federal Reserve Bank bullish on future of state, area economy The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City released the December Services Survey today. According to Cortney Cowley, assistant vice president and Oklahoma City Branch executive, results from the survey showed that Tenth District services activity grew slightly in December, and expectations for future services activity have increased somewhat moderately.

“Regional services activity increased slightly in December, as sales and revenues rebounded,” said Cowley. “Employment levels continued to decline, but firms expect growth in the next six months.”

The Kansas City Fed’s monthly Survey of Tenth District Services provides information on several indicators of activity including sales, revenue, employment and capital spending, while identifying changes in prices of input materials and sell-

ing prices. Survey participants represent a variety of industries, including retail and wholesale trade, automobile dealers, transportation, information, high-tech and professional services, real estate, education, restaurants, health services, tourism and other services firms.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City serves the Tenth Federal Reserve District, encompassing the western third of Missouri; all of Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Wyoming; and the northern half of New Mexico. Some gas goes under $2 a gallon Though the national average of gas has dropped under $3, some Oklahoma City stations are selling gallons for less.

According to the fuel price tracker site GasBuddy, some locations around the Oklahoma City metro are offering gas prices below $2. As of Monday afternoon, Walmart and Murphy Express locations were offering regular fuel at $1.89 per gallon, Casey's at $1.95, and CM Food Mart at $1.97.

AAA reports that Oklahoma is seeing the lowest average price per gallon in the nation, with $2.29 per gallon. Oklahoma and Canadian counties are among the cheapest counties for gas, with an average of $2.14 and $2.13, respectively.

Comparing Dec. 15 gas levels over time, Oklahoma's $2.29 is down from last year's $2.52, a drop of 23 cents.

Police intervened just in time after noticing the distressed man at an ATM. Officers stopped him as he was loading in cash and explained that he was being targeted by a scam.

Similar scams are happening all over the country, and most people aren't as lucky to be stopped before sending money. Once the money has been sent, it’s almost impossible to get it back. Fortunately, Senate Bill 1083 places some liability on the CryptoATM operators to give money back to new customers.

Another common crypto scheme is known as a crypto recovery room. In this type of scam, the swindler trumpets their ability to recover lost crypto, like funds lost at a cryptocurrency ATM. The scammer charges the victim a fake recovery fee which, like the original lost crypto, is likely gone forever.

These recovery scammers may impersonate a law enforcement agency, a securities regulator or an association that helps crypto fraud victims recover their funds. They will offer to recover the

victim’s crypto for an advance fee, sometimes encouraging multiple payments that grow over time.

Making progress in fight against obesity Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlights promising progress in Oklahoma’s obesity rates, representing a major step toward improving the health and well-being of communities across the state. The Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) credits this positive trend, in part, to the coordinated efforts outlined in the Oklahoma State Obesity Plan, along with strong local and statewide partnerships, workplace initiatives, and Oklahomans adjusting their health behavior to include moving more and making healthy choices.

The CDC data indicates that Oklahoma’s adult obesity rate continued to decline, dropping from 38.7% to 36.8% between 2023 and 2024, after decreasing from 40% in 2022. Even more significant is the decline in Oklahoma’s childhood obesity rate (ages 6-17), which was 21.4% in 2021/2022 and has fallen to 16.9% in 2023/2024, according to the recently released National Survey of Children’s Health Data.

Oklahoma improved its position in the state obesity ranking, climbing 12 places from 48th in 2022 to 36th in 2024. Additionally, the childhood obesity ranking rose from 42nd in 2021-2022 to 34th in 2023-2024. Rankings are based on data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS).

“We are encouraged by the progress reflected in the CDC’s data,” said Keith Reed, Commissioner of Health. “While there is more work ahead, this improvement shows that our sustained efforts, along with communities, tribal nations, schools, early child care centers, nonprofits, and state partners, are making a meaningful difference for Oklahomans.”

The state’s momentum, the first year-over-year reduction since surveillance began in 1988, is linked to an array of community-driven, evidencebased strategies and changes in health behaviors, including: Walking paths and trail expansions that improve access to physical activity for residents of all ages.
