Letter from the Editor: Change is in the air... Along with the change in season comes warmer temps, sunnier skies and greener grass. And at Acquire Magazine we’re doing some changing ourselves. As this issue goes to print, we say goodbye to our editor and sales manager, Rachel Weerheim. Rachel has been with the magazine for over a year, but now she’ll be pursuing a new career endeavor and we wish Rachel the very best. I am excited to be taking over as Editor in Chief of Acquire Magazine and look forward to working closely with each of our advertisers and learning more about their latest listings and projects. But first, allow me to tell you a little bit about myself. I was born and raised in Indianola, and still live there today with my husband and two children. In fact, as I put together this issue, I have a new little assistant helping me out. Her name is Sawyer and she is absolutely adorable.

I graduated from Iowa State University in 2003, with a degree in graphic design and minor in advertising. I have worked at a sign shop and a print shop, but I’ve been with Acquire Magazine since its beginning back in 2010. I really enjoy designing unique ads for each of our advertisers. I also like to travel, taste my husband’s delicious cooking, and am a little addicted to playing solitaire on my phone. Now, enough about me. Iowa Home Prices Up Slightly

CLIVE, IOWA (March 12, 2014) - According to the Iowa Association of REALTORS® (IAR), home prices rose slightly and sales decreased in February. IAR’s February 2014 Housing Trends Report shows that the average sale price of homes across Iowa was $141,489, up .5 percent from last February. The average sale price in February 2013 was $140,751. According to IAR, sales decreased by 5.1 percent from last year. IAR reports 1,792 homes sold in February 2014, while 1,889 homes sold in February 2013. Twenty-six of Iowa’s 44 local boards reported increases in average sale price, while 16 boards had increases in the number of sales. The statewide average number of days on the market last month was 103 days, up 1 day or 1 percent from last February. Twenty-three boards showed a decrease in days on the market.

The information used to create the February 2014 Housing Trends report was current as of March 10 at 9:34 a.m. The information is subject to change due to the dynamic nature of the IAR’s housing statistics system, which is updated hourly based on information present in local participating MLS (multiple listing service) systems. The Benton County Board has not yet reflected in the statewide statistics. The term REALTOR® is a registered trademark, which identifies real estate professionals who follow a strict code of ethics as members of the National Association of REALTORS®. The Iowa Association of REALTORS® is the state’s largest real estate professional organization representing more than 6,400 members and affiliates. The IAR releases a Housing Trends Report each month. Data is collected from local REALTOR® boards through their multiple listing service (MLS), which tracks sales activities in the board area. The IAR compiles all of the local board data into the statewide report each month. Reports are available online to IAR members and affiliates with a login and password. Kathy Miller, IAR 2014 President, says, “The extreme cold, snow, and wind that we’ve experienced this winter, has definitely influenced buyers and sellers across the state. Sellers are inclined to wait for warmer weather to list, and buyers are reluctant to move in the inclement weather we’ve experienced.” Miller expresses optimism by saying, “However, spring is in the air; and we’re sure to see an increase in activity in March. Interest rates remain low, which should bring buyers to the table and help sellers get their properties sold.”

Keep Your Home and Family Safe and Secure By Creighton Cox Executive Officer, Home Builders Association of Greater Des Moines

Your home is likely the largest investment you own, but more importantly, it protects and provides a sanctuary where your family will share experiences and create lifelong memories. The National Association of Home Builders’ MyHome Press has published a handbook for home owners, “Home Maintenance Made Easy,” and below are just some of the many tips provided in the Safety and Security section that can help you keep your home and family out of harm’s way. General Safety • Keep a home first aid kit or first aid materials in a convenient location. Buy and keep a booklet on basic first aid with it. • If you decide to remodel, finish the basement, or add on to your home, work with trained professionals who will make sure a building permit is obtained, all building department inspections occur and the work complies with applicable codes. • Teach children how and why to dial 911. Locks • Chains or locks will be the most secure if the screws and bolts used to attach them go all the way through the door or frame and cannot be removed from the outside. • Locks should be located so they cannot be reached by breaking a small windowpane in or near the door. • Locks that require a key to open from the inside are potentially dangerous if any emergency such as a fire occurs. Be sure a spare key is close by to prevent trapping anyone inside the house.

Fire Prevention • Have a fire extinguisher and ensure all family members know where it is and how to use it. Fires from combustible solids such as wood, cloth or paper differ from electrical and chemical fires, so make sure your extinguisher is multipurpose. Check annually that the charge is still in the green area of the scale. A qualified and licensed professional at a specialty store can recharge it. • Make sure all family members know the escape routes to use in a fire.
