WATCH OUT FOR THE BRILL!

GOAL OF THE GAME

Players work together to form the 7 families of geometric figures before the brill fish appears.

PREPARATION

Remove the formula cards. Place the brill cards on the table, face down, following the numerical order on the back side, and the 7 cards with the names of the families: they will help to categorise the cards during the game. Distribute the cards among the players: if there are 2 or 3 players give 4 cards each, if there are 4 to 6 players deal 3 cards each. The leftover cards are gathered in a pile, flipped over on the table. The youngest player starts the turn and the game continues clockwise.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE GAME

The player on turn draws a card and, in discussion with the rest of the players, decides which is the most convenient card to put on the table in order to facilitate everyone’s play in reassembling families.

The cards of each family are numbered from 1 to 6: if, for example, there is a 5 from a family on the table, only the card following or preceding the 5 (belonging to the same family) can be placed on the table, or alternatively, a card from a new family can be placed on the table. The discarded card must be placed on the table in the row of the corresponding family. If you do not have any of these possibilities, or if you place a wrong card, the player turns over a piece of the brill fish, following the numerical order; at this point the turn passes to the next player. The game ends - and all players win - when all families are complete. If all the cards of the brill fish are turned over, the players have lost.

GAME VARIATION

The game is played with the family deck, covered, on the table. The first player reveals the first card of the deck and places it next to it, clearly visible. The first player who correctly names the family to which the picture belongs keeps the card. The turn goes to the next player and the game proceeds until the deck is depleted. Whoever has the most cards at the end of the game wins.

FORMULA HUNTING

2 to 4 players and a judge

GOAL: associate geometric figures and their corresponding formulas quickly.

PREPARATION

Remove the Basic Geometric Entities and Angles families from the deck. Also remove cards 3-4-5-6 from the Circle family. Place all cards, uncovered, on the table.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE GAME

The player on turn has 30 seconds to find as many associations as possible between figure and formula, justifying his/her decision to the other players. In some cases, the formula can be associated with more than one figure (e.g. the formula A = b x h can be associated with the rectangle, the parallelogram but also with the square), so the player must choose one and leave the others on the game board. This stimulates reflection on the application of formulas and more generally divergent thinking applied to geometry. The judge must validate the player’s answer and the turn passes to the opponent (this also happens if the association cannot be made within 30 seconds). If the answer is correct, the player takes the card pair(s). The player who associates the most formulas wins. The game ends when there are no more cards that can be paired.

GAME VARIATION

Place the deck of formulas, covered, on the table. The cards with the figures will be placed on the table, uncovered and visible to everyone. In turn, each player reveals 1 formula card to which all players must simultaneously match the appropriate geometric figure. The fastest player keeps the card. Whoever gets the greatest number of formula cards wins.

SOLITAIRE GAME

This game is useful to consolidate the classification of plane and solid figures independently. It is played with the family card deck only (remove the formula cards). The individual player can practise classifying families by revealing one card at a time from the deck and placing them on the table, until the 7 families are composed. Similarly, one can train individually to match formula and geometric figure.

It is possible to check the correctness of the combinations by consulting the synoptic table of families

MEMORY

The game can be played alone or with multiple players. Formula cards and corresponding geometric figure cards are to be selected. They are arranged, covered, on the game board and the game proceeds according to the rules of a Memory game.

EDUCATIONAL AND DISCIPLINARY GOALS:

• Games to consolidate geometry learning, useful for the recognition of various geometric entities and plane/solid figures. The cards, together with the poster containing formulas and family explanations, are an excellent compensatory tool.

• Watch Out for the Brill! is a cooperative game, in which players implement stra tegies, argue about geometry, reason about formulas, name the properties of polygons, solids and fundamental geometric entities. In the cooperative game, no one feels excluded and, being able to talk freely to decide on the best game strategy, everyone feels like an active participant.

• In addition to memorising formulas, this game helps to work on the argumentation and verbalisation of correct terms. The player is expected to justify his or her choices and his or her fellow players must assess the consistency of the answer.
