Fashion, the art for change

A

ntonio Ligabue, nato qualche giorno prima che il Novecento facesse capolino, trovò sollievo dalle ansie nell’espressione artistica capace di mitigare le sue ossessioni e di colmarne la solitudine.

Lui, che visse gli inizi brutali del secolo scorso affrontandoli con corpo e mente brutalmente segnati, fu capace di ricostruire un senso nei colori e forme della sua arte. Osservandone le opere, esposte nella Villa Reale di Monza, ho riflettuto su come la moda stessa sia in grado di compiere un’operazione di senso simile a quella dell’artista: ridare significato a tempi talvolta folli e crepuscolari.

Lo osserviamo sfogliando questo numero in cui si parla di futuro nel metaverso, mentre riscopriamo nel passato la potenza del messaggio creativo di un abito o di un accessorio: la storia della gonna nell’evoluzione del concetto gender, la capacità di Balenciaga di leggere, valorizzare e punzecchiare la società con le sue collezioni. I designer dietro al marchio Salar ce lo ricordano: le persone chiedono sempre più qualità che duri perché, nonostante le impensabili incertezze in cui si dimena l’umanità degli anni ’20, le persone vogliono prendersi cura del pianeta, degli altri, e desiderano valori e punti fermi.

«Il rimpianto del suo spirito, che tanto seppe creare attraverso la solitudine e il dolore, è rimasto in quelli che compresero come sino all’ultimo giorno della sua vita egli desiderasse soltanto libertà e amore». La speranza è che questo epitaffio inciso sulla tomba di Ligabue non descriva mai il nostro vivere, e che la moda, ancora una volta, possa farci indossare l’abito migliore, ricordarci i valori importanti aldilà del bieco istinto. Creatività fa rima con libertà, non certo con rimpianto.

Antonio Ligabue, born a few days before the twentieth century began, found relief from anxiety in the artistic expression capable of mitigating his obsessions and filling his loneliness.

He, who lived through the brutal beginnings of the last century facing them with a tremendously marked body and mind, was able to find meaning in the colours and shapes of his art.

Looking at his works, exhibited at the Villa Reale in Monza, I reflected on how fashion itself is able to perform a meaningful operation similar to that of the artist: restore meaning to sometimes crazy and crepuscular times.

We observe it by browsing this issue in which we talk about the future in the metaverse, while we rediscover the power of the creative message of a dress or an accessory in the past: the history of the skirt in the evolution of the gender concept, Balenciaga’s ability to read, enhance and tease society with its collections. The designers behind the Salar brand remind us of it: people ask for increasingly more quality made to last because, despite the unthinkable uncertainties that humanity struggles with in the ‘20s, people want to take care of the planet and cherish others. They desire values and cardinal rules.

«The remorse of his spirit, who created so much through solitude and pain, remains in those who understood how up until his final day all he wanted was freedom and love». The hope is that this epitaph engraved on Ligabue’s tomb will never describe our life, and that fashion, once again, can make us wear the best cloth, remind us of the important values beyond the sinful instinct. Creativity rhymes with liberty, certainly not with remorse.

I

commenti che il New York Times riportò all’indomani della sfilata del menswear SS 1985 di Jean Paul Gaultier alludevano a qualcosa di realmente rivoluzionario e innovativ0. Che aveva lasciato a bocca aperta. E che, di fatto, era destinato a cambiare un’epoca. Il motivo era semplice. L’enfant terrible della couture aveva, ancora una volta, sparigliato i limiti delle categorizzazioni portando non solo la sperimentazione stilistica al parossismo, ma modificando lo stesso approccio classico alla mascolinità nel vestire, semplicemente mandando in passerella uomini – dal fisico scolpito e dalla mascella volitiva – con indosso le prime delle tante gonne che, da quel momento in poi, i suoi modelli – ma anche lui stesso - avrebbero portato. “Et Dieu Créa l’Homme”, si intitolava lo show, reo non tanto di aver sdoganato la sottana unisex quanto di aver, da una parte, recuperato le autentiche radici del vestire maschile e, dall’altra, di avere portato in primo piano (e non solo nel front row) una delle caratteristiche principali della moda: la capacità di essere un potente strumento di libertà. Tanto fisica, quanto mentale. Che nasce e finisce in una gonna per lui. Una caratteristica diventata oggi assoluta, grazie all’apporto delle nuove generazioni le quali, ben lungi dal voler essere definite sessualmente in base a ciò che indossano, hanno ridonato alla moda tutta la sua indipendenza creativa e intellettuale nello scegliersi un abbigliamento lontano da qualsivoglia imposizione di genere. E, soprattutto, concretizzando e smitizzando nella quotidianità l’esempio di couturier e di celebrities fino a renderlo squisitamente uno status quo.

La rivoluzione è ri- cominciata. E più che di superare il confine tra generi –parlando di vestiario – si tratta di fare un tuffo nel passato, quando questo confine, di fatto, non esisteva e la gonna accomunava tanto gli uomini quanto le donne. Il perché è semplice: nell’antichità gli indumenti erano unisex, a partire dalle pelli di animali, indossate dai nostri antenati per ripararsi dal freddo, fino ad arrivare

agli abiti egizi e alle toghe romane. Per lui e per lei. Con l’aggiunta che, per molto tempo, proprio la gonna rimase simbolo di virilità contrapposto alle bracae indossate dai barbari, che la vulgata considerava volgari e incivili al pari di chi le portava. Con il tempo i pantaloni si diffusero quanto le gonne, fino a quando queste ultime furono “relegate” al solo guardaroba femminile e legittimarono, così, la nascita di un abbigliamento per lui in cui pantaloni, camicie e cravatte ne costituivano il nucleo. Al netto di un’analisi storica del costume, in cui una responsabilità importante la ricopre il nuovo concetto di mascolinità in chiave moralistica promosso dalla Chiesa che portò la gonna per lui sul rogo, si devono attendere gli anni ’60 per ritrovare una moda che ancora una volta si trasforma in mezzo di espressione culturale e ideologico ed esprime il suo potere di detonatore nella società. E, in particolare, finendo addosso a chi di quella società contestava dogmi e regole per incarnare l’utopia di una libertà a tutto tondo che aveva nella gonna la sua divisa speciale. Fu riscoperta, reinterpretata, resa manifesto di quella eccentrica indipendenza nell’utilizzare i codici estetici che, ai giorni nostri, regna finalmente sovrana. Parlò di moda, ma anche di potere e di creatività, di conformismo e di rivoluzione; di libertà di scelta e di opportunità; modella e rimodella all’infinito l’idea stessa di mascolinità. O meglio, le tante idee di mascolinità. Che diventano l’espressività creativa del singolo, un’affermazione di gender-free che va oltre il genere e che attinge alla moda ma anche all’arte, alla musica, alla storia, prescindendo sempre da una logica binaria.

Basti pensare a David Bowie e a Kurt Cobain, campioni nell’attraversare l’immaginario comune rimanendo icone atemporali, che hanno aperto la strada – e l’armadio – a emuli meno blasonati di loro, artisticamente parlando, ma con la stessa capacità di annullare, con le gonne che hanno indossato, qualsivoglia genere di confine stilistico. Si parla di Billy Porter, di Boy George, di Marc Jacobs, ma anche del pilota Lewis Hamilton, di Kanye West – meraviglioso >

in kilt di pelle nera firmato Riccardo Tisci per Givenchy nel 2012 -, dell’onnipresente Damiano David dei Maneskin e del pluri-celebrato Mahmood. Senza dimenticare Harry Stiles, capace di amplificare la sua carica erotica indossando a più riprese look femminili che hanno trovato la loro più alta celebrazione nella cover di Vogue Usa del dicembre 2020 – la prima con in copertina un uomo - che lo ritraeva con indosso un vaporoso abito da sera con rouches, firmato Alessandro Michele per Gucci. Sì, perché l’opera di picconamento stilistica dei cliché passa necessariamente dal lavoro dei creativi, in un’onda lunga che nasce da Vivienne Westwood e da Jean Paul Gaultier, obviously; continua con Alexander McQueen, Comme des Garçons, Dries Van Noten, Yoji Yamamoto, Riccardo Tisci, Rick Owens per arrivare a Thom Browne e, naturalmente, allo stilista romano che, nel 2015, all’indomani del suo debutto da Gucci, è stato capace di ridefinire i parametri del menswear con la complicità di tuniche fiorate e di camicie col fiocco al collo. Uno dei suoi tanti meriti è stato quello di aver fatto quello che Armani fece negli anni 80 con il guardaroba femminile, svuotato dal suo carattere eccessivamente sensuale e in continuo dialogo e scambio con quello maschile, in una commistione reciproca che, in maniera nemmeno tanto urlata, trascendeva i comuni generi. La storia dimostra che, allo spaesamento iniziale, viene in aiuto il tempo: del resto se nel womenswear il punto di vista androgino è oramai una costante – e uno stile seasonless a sé -, si è sempre trattato di andare per gradi per rafforzare il cambiamento di estetica nel grande pubblico. Dove le celebrità rappresentano solo la punta dell’iceberg di un fenomeno che si è imposto come un capitolo importante del costume contemporaneo e che ha raggiunto, per così dire, la strada con uomini che comprano e indossano capi femminili senza bisogno di aspettare l’approvazione di brand o di strategie di mercato. Il colpo di grazia è stato inferto sicuramente dai social, la cui creatività ha definitivamente fatto cadere gli stereotipi di lunga data a ogni latitudine celebrando, una volta di più, l’essenza stessa della moda. Perché l’ascesa della gonna da uomo è sì la conferma della forza di espressione universale di cui la moda è paladina da sempre, ma è anche e soprattutto una celebrazione della sua essenza di habitus in senso aristotelico, ovvero di scelta che presuppone il

sentirsi bene in una certa abitudine. Naturalmente imprescindibile dal tempo in cui è immersa, di cui riflette cambiamenti e priorità, ma soprattutto un bisogno pratico che trascura regole obsolete o schemi sorpassati per farsi semplicemente libertà di essere se stessi. E di cui il come back della gonna, spogliata finalmente del suo cliché poco virile che per secoli le è stato attribuito, è realmente protagonista e simbolo di quella indipendenza nel vestire che gli uomini hanno riconquistato.

In the aftermath of Jean Paul Gaultier’s SS 1985 menswear show, the New York Times reported on comments that referred to something truly original and innovative. He had rendered them speechless. And it was supposed to usher in a new era. The reason was simple. The enfant terrible of couture had, once more, defied categorization, bringing not only stylistic experimentation to paroxysm, but also modifying the same classic approach to masculinity in dressing, simply by sending men on the catwalk - with sculpted physiques and strong-willed jaws - wearing the first of many skirts that his models - and himself - would wear from that point forward. The show was titled “Et Dieu Créa l’Homme,” and it was accused of not so much clearing the unisex skirt as of recovering the authentic roots of male dress on the one hand, and, on the other, of bringing to the fore (and not just in the front row) one of the main characteristics of fashion: the ability to be a powerful tool of freedom. Both physical and mental. Which is born and ends in a skirt for him. A feature that has become unmistakable today, thanks to the contributions of new generations that, rather than wishing to be sexually defined by what they wear, have returned to fashion all of its creative and intellectual liberty in selecting clothing free of any genre imposition. Above all, concretizing and demystifying the example of couturiers and celebrities in everyday life to the point where it has become an elegant status quo.

The revolution has begun once again. And, more than overcoming the gender divide - when it comes to clothing - it’s a question of reminiscing about a time when this barrier didn’t exist, and the skirt was worn by both men and women. The reason is simple: clothing

in ancient times was unisex, starting with animal skins used by our ancestors to keep warm, and progressing to Egyptian garments and Roman robes. For both him and her. With the added that, unlike the bracae worn by barbarians, which the Vulgate judged disgusting and uncivilized like the wearer, the skirt itself remained a sign of virility for a long time. Trousers spread as much as skirts over time, until the latter were “relegated” to the women’s wardrobe solely, legitimizing the development of clothing for him that consisted primarily of trousers, shirts, and ties. We have to wait until the 1960s to find a fashion that still transforms itself into a medium of cultural and ideological expression and conveys its power as a detonator in society, based on a historical analysis of the costume, in which the Church promoted a new concept of masculinity in a moralistic key that brought the skirt to the stake for him. And, in particular, those members of that society who opposed dogmas and laws in order to embody the dream of all-encompassing freedom with its own specific uniform in its skirt. It was rediscovered, reinterpreted, and made visible of the eccentric independence in the application of aesthetic norms that currently reigns supreme.

He talked about fashion, but also about power and creativity, conformity, and revolution; freedom of choice and chance; and infinitely changes and remodels the concept of masculinity. Or, more accurately, the various notions of masculinity. Which becomes the individual’s creative expression, a gender-neutral assertion that relies on fashion as well as art, music, and history, always rejecting a binary logic. Consider David Bowie and Kurt Cobain, champions of crossing the common imagination while remaining timeless icons, who have opened the way - and the wardrobe - for imitators who are less noble, artistically speaking, but who have the same ability to cancel any stylistic boundary with the skirts they have worn.

We talk about Billy Porter, Boy George, Marc Jacobs, but also Lewis Hamilton, Kanye West (who looked fantastic in a black leather kilt designed by Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy in 2012), Damiano David of the Maneskin, and the multi-Celebrated Mahmood. Without forgetting Harry Stiles, who has been known to boost up his erotica by donning feminine looks on several occasions, the most recent of which was on the December 2020 cover of Vogue USA - the first

with a man on the cover - in which he was photographed wearing a fluffy suit evening dress with rouches designed by Alessandro Michele for Gucci. Yes, because the stylistic selection of clichés must inevitably pass from the work of creatives, in a long wave that begins with Vivienne Westwood and Jean Paul Gaultier, of course; continues with Alexander McQueen, Comme des Garçons, Dries Van Noten, Yoji Yamamoto, Riccardo Tisci, Rick Owens, to Thom Browne and, of course, to the Roman designer who, in 2015, in the aftermath of his debut at Gucci, was able to redefine the parameters of menswear with the help of flowery tunics and shirts with a bow at the neck. One of his many strengths was to have done what Armani did in the 1980s with the women’s wardrobe, emptying it of its extremely sensual nature and putting it in constant dialogue and exchange with the male wardrobe, in a mutual combination that transcended the common genres in a subtle way.

History shows that, in the initial disorientation, time comes to the aid: After all, if the androgynous point of view is now a constant and a seasonless style in itself - in womenswear, it has always been about going step by step to support the change of aesthetics in the general public. Where celebrities are only the tip of an iceberg of a phenomenon that has established itself as an important chapter of contemporary costume and has reached, in a sense, the fork in the road with men who buy and wear women’s clothing without waiting for brand approval or market strategies. The final blow in the coffin was undoubtedly delivered by social media, whose ingenuity has definitively knocked down long-standing stereotypes at all levels by once again praising the very core of fashion. Because, if the ascent of the men’s skirt confirms the universal force of expression for which fashion has always been a champion, it is also and above all a celebration of its essence of habitus in the Aristotelian sense, or of choice that entails feeling good. Naturally, it is necessary to the time in which it is immersed, reflecting changes and priorities, but above all, it is a practical requirement that ignores old laws or outdated plans to just be free to be oneself. And of which the return of the skirt, finally free of the unmanly stereotype that has been attached to it for ages, is the true protagonist and emblem of men’s reclaimed wardrobe independence.

The historical synchronism of the last Balenciaga

I

l costume, sia scenico o dal valore sociale, ha il compito di narrare un mondo fantastico con un risvolto morale, ma che, pur sempre, possiede radici atemporali. Al contrario, la moda si serve di se stessa per mostrare la società corrente, un’immagine del reale legata a un preciso momento storico.

Capace di porre l’attenzione sui lati ricurvi di questa stanza immensa, come Guibert definiva il mondo, che regolarmente modifica le sue dimensioni, portando chiunque la abiti ad adattarsi a spazi sempre più angusti, la moda fa da tramite tra ragione ed emozione, servendosi, in parte, di ognuna delle due: la prima la usa per l’analisi del reale, per scrutare tra sovrastrutture particolari minimi; la seconda per comunicare il risultato dell’analisi con un approccio visivo - emotivo, che crea scompiglio nello spettatore, il quale si sente al contempo colpito ed estraniato. Uno dei più abili ‘chirurghi del sociale’, esperto nelle operazioni ‘a mente aperta’, è Demna Gvasalia che, dal suo approdo alla direzione creativa di Balenciaga, sembra riuscire, ormai da anni e collezioni, ad andare sempre più a fondo in questo oceano sociale. Vive nel ricordo di un’infanzia felice improvvisamente interrotta dalla guerra, quella che lo ha spinto fuori casa, dopo averlo lasciato solo, ancora adolescente, davanti a un paesaggio in cenere. Una realtà cruda, a senso unico, a tratti surreale, eppure un quadro complesso che ricorda i dipinti di La Chapelle, con quelle figure umane mostruose, custodi del tempo e dello spazio.

Il giovane designer georgiano impugna una parola nuova, che non coincide con ‘rivoluzione’, ma con la più sconosciuta ‘denuncia’.

Profugo della storia, Gvasalia rifugge nell’abito e nelle sue forme per portare alla vista dell’uomo la crudeltà di lui stesso, vestendolo di un’uniforme che lo faccia riflettere sulla difformità umana.

Ogni collezione della maison francese, dalla prima d’esordio della Man SS18 fino all’ultima FW22, nasce da un preciso momento storico, e, a volte anticipando la storia, ne scrive su giacche strutturate e cappotti avvolgenti. «La guerra esterna e poi interna della mia infanzia mi ha portato a rivalutare e rivalutarmi», riflette Demna Gvasalia, su quanto i tempi ritornino e gli errori mutino in catastrofi, eppure l’augurio per un mondo diverso non cessa di esistere. Un caleidoscopico viaggio tra una crisi pandemica e uno scontro armato che ricorda una pagina di storia già letta, forse solo tradotta in una lingua nuova, passando per una ripida scalata verso la vetta di questa piramide sociale, Balenciaga ora è sinonimo di ‘’storia’’.

Con collezioni impattanti, Demna Gvasalia, ha ribaltato un sistema piramidale che vedeva le classi più basse ambire a vestire la divisa capitalista di quelle più alte, portando queste ultime a indossare l’abito da lavoro che non vive più tra la pulizia razionalista di uffici e multinazionali, ma tra la calce di cantieri e la meccanicità dell’industria. Creando così l’estetica del brutto, lontana dalla borghese accezione di ‘ugly chic’ alla Prada. Un orrido desiderabile che si impone in una società in continuo mutamento.

Distruggere per creare sembra essere la sola regola di questo gioco. Il designer classe 1981 non solo ha riportato il nome di una maison simbolo dell’architettura dell’abito a essere ancor di più icona di un’architettura sociale, ma ha riscoperto opere d’archivio a lungo lasciate sotto veli polverosi. Dal cappotto con i fianchi che ricordano la struttura degli abiti settecenteschi della corte francese, al completo sartoriale che si allarga, proprio come erano soliti vestire gli artisti parigini dei primi anni del ‘900, Balenciaga unisce tradizione e innovazione sotto la stessa dicitura del vocabolario > creativo.

Una sinfonia potente che continua a risuonare tra le venue che superano gli spazi dello show e invadono le strade d’Europa, come se chiunque fosse la dimostrazione della riuscita di una sperimentazione sociale senza eguali. Nasce così una nuova era per la maison francese di origine spagnola: l’ultimo Balenciaga.

The costume, whether scenic or with a social value, has the task of narrating a fantastic world with a moral connotation, but still with timeless roots. Fashion, on the contrary, uses itself to show current society, an image of reality tied to a specific historical moment, able to focus attention on the curved sides of this immense room, as Guibert defined the world, which regularly changes its dimensions, bringing whoever dresses it to adapt to increasingly narrow spaces. Fashion acts as an intermediary between reason and emotion, in part employing both: it uses the first one to analyse reality, to scrutinise the smallest details between superstructures; while the second one is used to communicate the result of the analysis with a visual - emotional approach, which creates confusion in the viewer, who feels both struck and estranged at the same time. Since his arrival at the creative direction of Balenciaga, Demna Gvasalia, one of the most skilled ‘social surgeons’, expert in ‘open-minded’ operations, seems to be able, starting years and collections ago, to deepen this social ocean.

He lives in the memory of a happy childhood suddenly interrupted by the war, the one that pushed him out of the house, after leaving him alone, still a teenager, in front of an ashen landscape. A harsh one-way, sometimes surreal reality yet a complex picture that recalls the paintings of La Chapelle, with those monstrous human figures, guardians of time and space.

The young Georgian designer wields a new word, which does not coincide with ‘revolution’, but with the more unknown ‘denunciation’. A refugee from history, Gvasalia shuns clothing and its forms to bring the man’s cruelty to his own sight, dressing him in a uniform that makes him reflect on human deviations.

Each collection of the French maison, from the first debut of Man SS18 to the last FW22, is born from a precise historical moment, and, sometimes anticipating history, it writes about structured jackets and enveloping coats. «The external and then internal war of my childhood led me to re-evaluate things and re-evaluate myself », reflects Demna Gvasalia, on how times return and errors turn into catastrophes, yet the wish for a different world never ceases to exist. A kaleidoscopic journey between a pandemic crisis and an armed confrontation that recalls a page of history already read, perhaps only translated into a new language, passing through a steep climb to the top of this social pyramid, Balenciaga is now synonymous with “history”. With impactful collections, Demna Gvasalia, overturned a pyramid system that saw lower classes aspire to wear the capitalist uniform of the higher ones, leading the latter to wear the workwear that no longer lives among the rationalist cleanliness of offices and multinationals, but between the lime of construction sites and the mechanical nature of industry. Thus creating the aesthetics of the ugly, far from the bourgeois meaning of Prada’s ‘ugly chic’ style. A desirable horror that imposes itself in a constantly changing society.

Destroying to create seems to be the only rule of this game. The designer born in 1981 has not only brought the name of a maison that symbolises the architecture of clothing to be even more an icon of social architecture, but he has rediscovered archival works that have long been left under dusty veils. From the coat with the hips that recall the structure of the eighteenth-century clothes of the French court, to the tailored suit that widens, just as the Parisian artists of the early 1900s used to dress, Balenciaga combines tradition and innovation under the same wording of the creative vocabulary.

A powerful symphony that continues to resonate among the venues that go beyond the spaces of the show and invade the streets of Europe, as if anyone were the proof of the success of an unparalleled social experimentation. A new era was thus born for the French maison of Spanish origin: the last Balenciaga.

iochi di colore accompagnano la silhouette, rendendo il corpo a malapena percepibile sotto sottili membrane di tessuto, simile al movimento di una creatura marina.

Sembrerebbe la descrizione di un personaggio fantascientifico, invece eÌ la collezione haute couture autunno - inverno del 2019 di Van Herpen, uno dei nomi di punta nella moda digitale e nella digitalizzazione del processo creativo con l’obiettivo di creare tecnologie tessili “impossibili” nella vita reale. Un ottimo esempio eÌ il suo Infinity Dress, un abito motorizzato creato in collaborazione con artisti cinetici il cui obiettivo era di donare una illusione ottica allo spettatore, grazie al movimento perpetuo presentato dal delicato ingranaggio in alluminio capace di muoversi ipnoticamente intorno alla modella. Un progetto reso possibile dalla sperimentazione virtuale, testando l’idea attraverso simulazioni e formati digitali prima della realizzazione del capo finale. Sono diversi gli artisti che negli ultimi anni hanno deciso di convertirsi al formato digitale durante il processo creativo. Troviamo per esempio Lisa Jiang e i suoi capi motorizzati che si avvolgono intorno al corpo come fumo e Scarlett È proprio questa assenza di vincoli che attrae i giovani artisti verso l’arte digitale. In un mondo dove eÌ possibile realizzare da zero qualsiasi genere di design, che sia in movimento o creato con materiali che non possono essere

modellati da mani umane, le possibilità sono infinite. Seppur giovane, la moda digitale eÌ un mercato che già da diversi anni esiste in modo proficuo nel metaverso. Basta un computer e il giusto software di progettazione per rilasciare il potenziale creativo di un artista, venduto e condiviso su social e negozi online, a seconda del modello e della modalità di utilizzo.

Per esempio, i modelli possono essere caricati tramite una operazione di Photoshop direttamente sulla foto dell’acquirente, senza bisogno di provare o toccare l’outfit. È un nuovo universo digitale che potrebbe modificare la nostra visione sul mondo della moda.

Si parla di metaverso quando ci si riferisce a una realtà virtuale non parallela alla vita reale, bensì in relazione con essa. In questi anni di reclusione sociale, abbiamo assistito alla crescita del multiverso nelle nostre case: attraverso Zoom, i social e i collegamenti online forniti da piattaforme come Fortnite o Animal Crossing, popolari giochi fra i giovanissimi.

I videogiochi forniscono le prove sulla funzionalità della moda nell’universo digitale: personalizzare il proprio avatar eÌ il semplice desiderio umano di esprimere la propria immagine a un pubblico.

Brand di alta moda come Balenciaga, Ralph Lauren e Gucci hanno collaborato più volte, in passato, con simili piattaforme, riscuotendo sempre grande successo e consensi da parte dei giocatori. >

Presentano forme organiche iper-realistiche, e che sembrano ignorare le leggi della fisica, le proposte di Yang, giovane stilista londinese che gioca con la relazione fra materiali ecosostenibili e la tecnologia moderna. I suoi abiti, per le leggi della fisica, sono spesso impossibili da realizzare nella vita vera. Perciò possono esistere solo in una realtà virtuale dove, a detta sua, “c’eÌ più libertà, nessuna gravità e nessun vincolo.”

Il settore fashion si eÌ sicuramente accorto del potenziale pubblicitario di questo mercato. Quest’anno si eÌ tenuta la prima Metaverse Fashion Week, accessibile in realtà virtuale sulla piattaforma Decentraland, con l’utilizzo di occhiali VR. Altri esempi: la collaborazione fra Nike e RTFKT (specializzati in sneaker digitali andate sold out in cinque minuti) o la piattaforma interattiva rilasciata da Dior sulla piattaforma Ready Player Me nel 2021.

Lo stesso concetto di metaverso sembra essere preso di mira da sguardi importanti. Mesi fa Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook) ha proclamato il nuovo nome della sua azienda, Meta, con la promessa di una nuova piattaforma digitale multiverso.

Le opinioni restano contrastanti. Alcuni considerano questa nuova frontiera della digitalizzazione dei beni come una possibilità per ridurre l’impatto nocivo sull’ambiente delle grandi industrie fast fashion. Altri vogliono prestare più attenzione all’impatto che l’uso spropositato di energia per mantenere vive le realtà virtuali e l’eventuale patrimonio NFT (token non fungibili) avrebbe sull’ambiente.

Mentre questo “nuovo mondo” continua a crescere il dibattito resta aperto.

Colour plays accompany the silhouette, making the body barely perceptible under thin membranes of fabric, similar to the movement of a sea creature. It could seem the description of a science fiction character, but instead it is the haute couture autumn - winter 2019 collection by Van Herpen, one of the leading names in digital fashion and in the digitisation of the creative process with the aim of creating “impossible” textile technologies in real life.

An excellent example is her Infinity Dress, a motorised dress created in collaboration with kinetic artists whose goal was to give an optical illusion to the viewer, thanks to the perpetual movement presented by the delicate aluminum mechanism capable of hypnotically moving around the model.

A project made possible by virtual experimentation, testing the idea through simulations and digital formats before creating the final garment. In recent years several artists have decided to convert the creative process into digital. Lisa Jiang, to name one, and her motorised garments that wrap around the body like smoke and Scarlett.

It is precisely this absence of constraints that attracts young artists to

digital art. In a world where it is possible to make any kind of design from scratch, whether it is in motion or created with materials that cannot be shaped by human hands, the possibilities are endless.

Although young, digital fashion is a market that has already been profitable in the metaverse for several years. A computer and the right design software are all it takes to unleash the creative potential of an artist, sold and shared on social networks and online stores, depending on the pattern and the way of use.

For example, patterns can be directly uploaded on the buyer’s photo through Photoshop, without the need to try on or touch the outfit.

It is a new digital universe that could change our view of the fashion world. We speak of metaverse when we refer to a virtual reality not parallel to real life, but related to it. In these years of social confinement, we have witnessed the growth of the multiverse in our homes: through Zoom, social networks and online connections provided by platforms such as Fortnite or Animal Crossing, popular games among the very young.

Video games provide evidence of the fashion’s functionality in the digital universe: customising one’s avatar and the simple human desire to express one’s image to an audience.

High fashion brands such as Balenciaga, Ralph Lauren and Gucci have collaborated several times with similar platforms in the past, always enjoying great success and receiving approval from the players. The proposals by Yang, a young London designer who plays with the relationship between eco-friendly materials and modern technology, present hyper-realistic organic forms that seem to ignore the laws of physics. Her clothes, for the law of physics, are often impossible to make in real life. They can thus only exist in a virtual reality where, according to her, “there is more freedom, no gravity and no constraints”.

The fashion sector has certainly noticed the advertising potential of this market. The first Metaverse Fashion Week was held this year and was accessible in virtual reality on the Decentraland platform, with the use of a VR headset.

Other examples: the collaboration between Nike and RTFKT (specialised in digital sneakers sold out in five minutes) or the interactive platform released by Dior on the Ready Player Me platform in 2021.

The very concept of the metaverse seems to be targeted by important gazes. Months ago Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook) announced his company’s new name, Meta, with the promise of a new multiverse digital platform. Opinions remain conflicting. Some consider this new frontier of the digitisation of products as a possibility to reduce the harmful impact of large fast fashion industrieson the environment.

Others want to pay more attention to the impact that the disproportionate use of energy to keep virtual realities alive and any NFT assets (non-fungible tokens) would have on the environment. As this “new world” continues to grow, the debate remains open.

Isabella Errani - Errani Studio Pragmatism, skills and vision

“

Siamo interessati alle belle storie, ma ciò che ci piace di più è raccontarle nel modo più bello”: è questo il mantra dello studio di pubbliche relazioni e comunicazione creato da Isabella Errani nel 1995 e che oggi vanta nel proprio portfolio oltre 70 clienti e più di 300 progetti sviluppati ad hoc per le aziende.

A caratterizzarlo un approccio cross media, contemporaneo e strategico, affiancato da uno spazio-showroom di oltre 700 mq in uno storico appartamento milanese a due passi da Moscova, nel cuore pulsante di Milano, dove le collezioni dei brand sono proposte in un contesto metropolitano e polifunzionale. Qui Isabella Errani ci racconta di come la sua idea di comunicazione e PR sia diventata una realtà di successo, affermata a livello internazionale.

Quali sono le 3 parole-chiave che sintetizzano la vostra filosofia?

“Prima di tutto concretezza/pragmaticità, ma anche competenze, perché ormai nulla si improvvisa nella comunicazione e, oggi più che mai, i clienti hanno necessità di confrontarsi con interlocutori autorevoli e preparati. Infine, direi visione, ovvero la capacità di guardare ai cambiamenti e all’evoluzione del mercato e del linguaggio, e porsi di fronte a essi con grande flessibilità”.

Come selezionate il vostro portafoglio marchi?

“Confesso che non amo ‘selezionare’ e, anzi, mi hanno sempre abbastanza stupito quelli che parlano di ‘selezione’ dei marchi da avere in portfolio. Credo piuttosto che un professionista debba e possa lavorare per qualunque marchio abbia qualcosa da dire, purché questo sia serio, coerente e preciso nella propria identità. È compito del professionista della comunicazione, poi, produrre i contenuti più corretti e comunicarli. Noi siamo, appunto, uno strumento e lavoriamo su posizionamento e target a seconda del prodotto e del marchio. Possiamo lavorare su un accessorio che costa 29 euro, così come su uno che ne costa 1000: non è il prezzo la discriminante, ma la coerenza del messaggio”.

Come vi ha cambiato il Covid e come ha cambiato i brand con cui collaborate?

“Il Covid ha soprattutto messo a dura prova la resilienza, la capacità di adattamento e la velocità di pensiero e di azione. Dal pun-

to di vista lavorativo, non ha cambiato nulla perché noi eravamo già preparati al digitale e abbiamo solo seguito l’accelerata. Siamo stati tra i primi a lavorare a un press-day esclusivamente digitale e a organizzarlo in soli 10 giorni.

Il Covid ha piuttosto condotto a una ‘scrematura’ dei player presenti sul mercato, perché oggi - ripeto – anche nel nostro campo non c’è più spazio per l’improvvisazione, mentre per quanto riguarda i marchi, chi aveva già prima delle difficoltà, con il Covid è incappato nella debacle definitiva”.

Calzatura e accessorio moda: ancora in sofferenza o ci sono dei segnali di ripresa?

“Credo sia il settore che meglio ha reagito a questo periodo di difficoltà, soprattutto il comparto gioielleria che, a detta di molti operatori, sembra andare anche meglio di prima del Covid”.

Quali sono i settori che stanno reagendo meglio a questo momento di difficoltà?

Sicuramente la casa e il design, perché le persone hanno riscoperto i valori dell’accoglienza e il piacere di viverla pienamente. Poi il lifestyle in genere e il food (ovviamente), che sta crescendo e si sta evolvendo anche nella costruzione dello storytelling, che fino a poco tempo fa non veniva preso minimamente in considerazione.

E da questo punto di vista, la moda non ha che da insegnare perché è il campo da sempre più avanti di tutti”.

Che cosa richiedono maggiormente i clienti oggi?

“Le richieste più insistenti riguardano le competenze, reali e globali, a livello di comunicazione: queste vanno dal settore stampa a quello digitale, passando per gli eventi, il product placement, la creazione di contenuti e la visione del prodotto. Oggi le agenzie come la mia lavorano al fianco dei responsabili della comunicazione e non lasciano nulla al caso. Il nostro motto è lavorare a 360° su tutto e bene”.

Qual è il marchio emergente da tenere sott’occhio?

“Tra gli accessori, direi Maria Luca, un brand di calzature giovane e molto cool”. >

“We are interested in beautiful stories, but what we like most is to tell them in the most beautiful way” Che tipo di comunicazione richiedono le aziende che hanno un negozio fisico e online?

“La comunicazione è oggi assolutamente unificata. Ormai anche il negozio fisico, per funzionare, deve essere legato a delle ‘esperienze’ da vivere. Gli spazi devono essere multifunzione ed essere legati ad un mondo di riferimento, capaci di creare un vero e proprio ‘piacere’ legato all’acquisto. Anche l’evento o l’intrattenimento possono essere digitali, e non solo fisici”.

Su cosa puntano la comunicazione e il marketing dei marchi più innovativi?

“La comunicazione è oggi frammentata e passa attraverso tutti i canali: la carta stampata per creare posizionamento, gli eventi fisici o digitali, la produzione di contenuti e il product placement. I marchi sono oggi gli editori di loro stessi e devono essere in grado di produrre e proporre il materiale più vario, ma sempre coerente con la loro identità e in grado di stimolare il consumatore”.

Digitale: sì (come?), oppure no (perché?)

“Digitale sì, ovvio! Ormai imprescindibile, ma non sufficiente. Soprattutto per consolidare un marchio, ma anche per lanciarlo, non basta lavorare solo sul digital, la carta stampata ha ancora una sua valenza”.

Sostenibilità. Tema cruciale o sopravalutato? Come è meglio ‘parlarne’?

“Il tema, ormai, è inevitabile e necessario, come per il digitale. Ovviamente, si tratta di un argomento che deve essere affrontato con la massima serietà, affinché sia reale e non una mera operazione di comunicazione e marketing. Altrimenti la partita è già persa in partenza, perché le persone sono sempre più informate e preparate”.

What are the 3 key words that summarise your philosophy?

“First of all concreteness/pragmatism, but also skills, because nothing is improvised in communication now and, today more than ever, customers need to deal with authoritative and prepared interlocutors. Finally, I would say vision, or the ability to look at the changes and evolution of the market and language, and face them with great flexibility”.

How do you select your brand portfolio?

“I confess that I don’t like the word ‘selecting’, and those who actually talk about ‘selecting’ brands for their portfolio leave me quite astonished. I reckon that a professional should and can work for any brand that has something to say, as long as it is serious, consistent and precise in its identity. It is then the job of the communication professional to produce the most correct contents and communicate them. We are, in fact, a tool and we work on positioning and targets according to the product and the brand. We can work on an accessory that costs 29 euro, or on one that costs 1000: price is not the discriminating factor, but the consistency of the message is”.

How has Covid changed you and how has it changed the brands you collaborate with?

“Covid has above all put a strain on resilience, adaptability and the speed of thought and action. In terms of business, nothing has

changed because we were already prepared for digital and we only followed the acceleration. We were among the first ones to work on an exclusively digital press-day and organise it in just 10 days.

Covid has led to a ‘skimming’ of the players on the market, because today - I repeat - even in our field there is no longer room for improvisation. Those brands which already had difficulties before, ran into the definitive debacle with Covid”.

Footwear and fashion accessory: are they still suffering or are there signs of recovery?

“I believe it is the sector that has reacted best to this difficult period, especially the jewelry sector which, according to many operators, seems to be doing even better than before Covid”.

What are the sectors that respond best to this difficult time?

“Definitely home and design, because people have rediscovered the values of hospitality and the pleasure of living it fully. Then the lifestyle in general and food (obviously), which is growing and evolving also in the construction of storytelling, which until recently was not taken into consideration at all. And in this matter, fashion has only to teach because it has always been ahead of everyone”.

What do customers demand most today?

“The most insistent requests concern real and global skills at communication level: these range from the printing to the digital sector, passing through events, product placement, content creation and product vision. Today, agencies like mine work alongside communications managers and leave nothing to chance. Our motto is to work well and on everything all-around”.

What is the emerging brand to keep an eye on?

“Among the accessories, I would say Maria Luca, a young and very cool footwear brand”.

What do the communication and marketing of the most innovative brands focus on?

“Communication today is fragmented and passes through all channels: the printed word to create positioning, physical or digital events, the production of content and product placement. Brands are now their own publishers and must be able to produce and offer the most varied material, but always consistent with their identity and able to stimulate the consumer”.

Digital: yes (how?), or no (why?)

“Digital yes, of course! Now essential, but not enough. Above all to consolidate a brand, but also to launch it. Working only on digital is not enough, printed paper still has its own value”.

Sustainability. Is it crucial or an overrated theme? How is it best to ‘talk about it’?

“The theme is now inevitable and necessary, the same way as digital. Obviously, this is a topic that must be addressed with the utmost seriousness, so that it is real and not a mere communication and marketing operation. Otherwise the game is lost right at the start, because people are increasingly more informed and prepared”.

What kind of communication do companies with a physical and online store require?

“Communication is now absolutely unified. To make physical stores work, they must be linked to ‘experiences’ to be lived. Spaces

reato nel 2010 da Salar e Francesca, coppia nella vita e sul lavoro, SALAR è stato immediatamente riconosciuto da Vogue Italia come uno dei migliori brand emergenti nell’ambito moda. In esso l’innovazione, sempre accompagnata dall’eccellenza della tradizione italiana, si fonde con la conoscenza profonda del prodotto e della sua creazione da un lato, e del marketing e della comunicazione dall’altro. Il risultato sono borse concepite come oggetti di design, da collezionare ed esporre, oltre che da indossare con piacere e orgoglio. Ne abbiamo parlato con i suoi creatori.

Quali caratteristiche deve possedere oggi un brand?

“A nostro parere oggi un brand deve essere vero, credibile e originale. Solo così può emergere e farsi notare”.

Come vi ha cambiato il Covid?

“La moda prima dell’era Covid era arrivata ad avere una velocità di comunicazione, produzione e vendita eccessiva. Negli ultimi anni, anche grazie all’utilizzo dei social media, i tempi si erano talmente accorciati che una collezione veniva presentata e venduta nel giro di pochi giorni e, dopo due mesi, ne usciva una nuova. Questa pandemia ci ha dato la possibilità di rallentare. Nello specifico con SALAR siamo passati a presentare una collezione due volte l’anno invece di quattro, con possibilità di diversi drop da parte dei negozi, al fine di avere merce nuova secondo le necessità”.

Borse: accessorio moda ancora in sofferenza o ci sono segnali di ripresa?

“Durante il lockdown la pelletteria, così come in generale il comparto della moda, ha molto sofferto, dal momento che il consumatore, restando per la maggior parte del proprio tempo in casa, ha privilegiato l’acquisto di capi e accessori comodi e pratici, da utilizzare tra le mura domestiche. Però, una volta tornati a quella che possiamo chiamare ‘normalità’, le persone hanno ricominciato ad acquistare anche oggetti di puro piacere, come la borsa, soprattutto online, dove l’accessorio, non avendo problemi di taglie, si vende con maggiore facilità”.

Quali sono i mercati che stanno reagendo meglio a questo periodo di difficoltà post-Covid?

“Per quanto ci riguarda, sicuramente i Paesi del Medio Oriente, ma anche l’Italia registra una discreta ripresa”.

Che cosa cerca oggi più che mai il consumatore?

“Assolutamente la qualità. Il consumatore, in questo momento, cerca prodotti che durino nel tempo ed è meno attratto, rispetto al >

passato, dal fast fashion. Forse perché proprio grazie al digitale è più informato ed è più cosciente di ciò che acquista”.

Che tipo di comunicazione richiedono le aziende che hanno un negozio fisico e online?

“Cercare di far interagire queste due realtà, portando il fisico nel digitale e viceversa; adottando strategie di digital marketing per coinvolgere il consumatore a recarsi in negozio, luogo dove poi magari scoprono dei collegamenti che lo riportano al digitale, come QR code o prodotti visti nel punto vendita fisico, ma acquistabili online”.

Come si muove la comunicazione e il marketing dei marchi più innovativi come il vostro?

“La comunicazione deve puntare sull’informazione e sulla verità, perché oggi più che mai lo shopping si è trasformato da acquisto d’impulso, ad acquisto ragionato, ed è necessario raccontare in modo veritiero e puntuale quello che il brand fa e quello in cui crede. Questa a nostro parere è la carta vincente”.

Quali sono le strategie commerciali vincenti? Come vedete il digitale? “È importantissimo a livello commerciale definire bene il proprio mercato e lavorare su quello, soprattutto per un marchio in cre-

scita. Lavorare, ad esempio, con prodotti esclusivi è una buona strategia. Per quanto riguarda il digitale: è il futuro, anzi il presente! È il modo più semplice per guadagnare visibilità esattamente come e dove si vuole, ma bisogna stare sempre al passo con i tempi perché oggi il digitale non è più solo legato ai social media, ma anche alla creazione di un’esperienza a 360 gradi, un viaggio multisensoriale in grado di intrattenere e coccolare il cliente”.

Parliamo di sostenibilità…

“La sostenibilità è oggi un tema cruciale, nell’ambito del quale ognuno di noi può, e deve fare la propria parte: se ogni persona/brand andasse in quella direzione, anche solo con un piccolo contributo, presto si potrebbe dar vita a uno sviluppo più sano e consapevole”.

What characteristics does a brand need today?

“In our opinion, today a brand must be true, credible and original.

Only in this way can it emerge and be noticed”.

How has Covid changed you?

“Fashion before the Covid era had come to have an excessive speed of communication, production and sales. In recent years, also thanks to the use of social media, times had shortened so much that a collection was presented and sold within a few days and, after two months, a new one came out. Bags: is the fashion accessory sector still suffering or are there signs of recovery?

“During the lockdown, leather goods, as well as the fashion sector in general, suffered a lot, since consumers, staying at home for most of their time, favoured the purchase of comfortable and practical garments and accessories, to be used in their home. However, once back to what we can call ‘normality’, people have started buying items of pure pleasure again, like bags, especially online, where the accessory, having no size problems, is sold more easily”.

What markets are reacting best to this difficult post-Covid period?

“As far as we are concerned, definitely Middle Eastern countries, but Italy is also recording a discreet recovery”.

What are consumers looking for today more than ever?

“Absolutely quality. At this time, consumers are looking for products that last over time and are less attracted to fast fashion than in the past. Perhaps because thanks to digital they are more informed and more aware of what they buy”.

What kind of communication do companies with a physical and online store require?

“Trying to make these two realities interact, bringing physical into digital and vice versa; adopting digital marketing strategies that involve consumers to make them go the store, a place where they may then discover links that bring them back to digital, such as QR codes or products seen in the physical point of sale, but which can be purchased online”.

How does the communication and marketing of the most innovative brands like yours move?

“Communication must focus on information and truth, because

today more than ever shopping was transformed from impulse purchase to reasoned purchase, and it is necessary to tell what the brand does and believes in, in a truthful and timely way. In our opinion, this is the winning card”.

What are the winning business strategies? How do you see digital?

“It is very important on a commercial level to define your market well and work on that, especially for a growing brand. For example, working with exclusive products is a good strategy. As for digital: it is the future, actually the present! It is the easiest way to gain visibility exactly how and where you want, but you must always keep up with the times because today digital is no longer linked only to social media, but also to the creation of a 360-degree experience, a multisensory journey able to entertain and pamper the customer”.

Taking about sustainability…

“Today sustainability is a crucial theme. We all can and must do our part: if each person/brand went in that direction, even with a small contribution, we could soon give life to a healthier and more aware development”.

Giusi, we already miss you

A

veva nevicato da poco, e i passi erano torbidi, come solo le strade di Milano sanno essere dopo aver trasformato il candore in fuliggine. Con cavalletti, luci e macchine fotografiche sottobraccio, andavamo a incontrare Giusi Ferrè a casa sua, per registrare un video sulla storia del tacco.

Ci accolse con la gentilezza di chi non solo ha lasciato il segno nella storia del giornalismo italiano, ma anche di chi sa lasciare il segno nel cuore delle persone. Fu oltre che professionale pur regalando simpatia; raccontò il suo sapere senza farlo mai calare dall’alto, con quella capacità di modulare la voce che talmente ti cattura da dimenticare il tempo. Si chiacchierò ben oltre le necessità del video, perché era chiaro che Giusi amava incontrare le persone aldilà del dovere. Le piaceva il confronto, ascoltare e graffiare, dire apertamente senza mai tirarsi indietro.

Ma la storia che racconta del legame fra l’icona del giornalismo di moda e la rivista Aeffe parte da più lontano, come ricorda il direttore Matteo Pasca: “Chiamai Giusi all’inizio dell’avventura del magazine. Assieme ad Angelo (Lanza, fotografo e art director della testata, n.d.r.) cercavamo un giornalista di moda che, con la sua firma, conferisse autorevolezza al magazine. Ero molto intimidito nel telefonarle: l’avevo vista in televisione e letta su quotidiani e periodici importanti. Decisi di andare dritto al punto e dire la verità: ‘Abbiamo bisogno di un nome affermato per un magazine b2b con grandi ambizioni, ma che ancora nessuno conosce’. Fu deliziosa nel mettermi a mio agio. Non le offrivo molto per la collaborazione, ma ridendo mi disse: ‘Credi che i quotidiani mi paghino molto di più?’. Ascoltò quello che avevo in mente: mi stuzzicava l’idea di una rubrica di cultura della moda che affrontasse il mondo degli accessori con la sua irriverenza, ma anche con lo stile dotto che solo lei sapeva interpretare al meglio. Si creò un sodalizio perfetto: con Angelo concordavano gli argomenti da trattare per poi girarmi i testi da leggere.

Erano sempre perfetti.

Grazie Giusi per averci accompagnato. Tu, grande giornalista di moda, hai preso per mano gli ‘ultimi arrivati’ e ci hai spronato a realizzare qualcosa di bello. Quando Angelo ti portava un mazzo di fiori con il numero appena uscito e tu gli facevi i complimenti, lui usciva di casa entusiasta e orgoglioso. Ti porteremo nel cuore e custodiremo con gratitudine quello che hai fatto per noi. Buon viaggio”.

Mentre monto i cavalletti, attacco le luci e mi preparo a girare, sento proprio Giusi e Angelo chiacchierare animatamente. Quasi mi defilo, non mi sento per nulla all’altezza delle loro considerazioni, analisi e critiche, talvolta spietate ma sagaci. Mi è chiaro quanta passione per la moda, ma ancor prima per la cultura e la società, vibri fra queste due anime.

L’intervista è finita. In ascensore, Angelo racconta: “Dopo i primi numeri della rivista siamo entrati in confidenza e alcune serate le passiamo a ricordare le suggestioni degli anni ’80 e ’90. È nata un’amicizia con una donna intelligente, estremamente colta, le cui parole sono

capaci di trascinarti verso il lato più affascinante della moda. Mi disse che le piaceva collaborare con noi perché le sembrava di tornare ai tempi in cui si facevano le riviste belle, in cui la cura per la fotografia, la creatività e il gusto italiani erano al primo posto. Ho un solo rammarico: mi aveva promesso la sua collezione personale di borse per un servizio fotografico… voglio continuare a immaginare che quel servizio lo scatteremo. Sentire la sua mancanza sarà più lieve”.

Fuori ha smesso di nevicare. Noi torniamo alla macchina con l’attrezzatura sempre sottobraccio, ma con la sensazione di esserci lasciati indietro qualcosa di molto più importante. Perché se Milano trasforma la neve in carbone, Giusi trasformava la moda in un alto racconto di costume. Ci manca già la tua passione, il tuo coraggio di andare a fondo e, quando necessario, sparigliar le carte.

It had recently snowed, and the steps were murky, as only the streets of Milan can be after turning whiteness into soot. Carrying tripods, lights and cameras under our arms, we went to meet Giusi Ferré at her home, to record a video on the history of the heel. She welcomed us with the kindness of those who do not just leave their mark in the history of Italian journalism, but who know also how to leave it in people’s hearts.

She was professional and friendly; she told her knowledge without ever letting it drop from above, with that ability to modulate the voice that captures you so much that you forget the time. We chatted far beyond the needs of the video, because it was clear that Giusi loved meeting people beyond duty. She enjoyed confrontation, listening and scratching, having openly her say without ever backing down.

But the story that tells of the connection between the icon of fashion journalism and Aeffe magazine starts from further away, as director Matteo Pasca recalls: “I called Giusi at the beginning of the magazine’s adventure. Together with Angelo (Lanza, photographer and art director of the magazine, editor’s note) we were looking for a fashion journalist who would give authority to the magazine with her signature. I was very intimidated to phone her: I had seen her on television and read her articles in important newspapers and periodicals.

I decided to go straight to the point and tell the truth: ‘We need an established name for a b2b magazine with great ambitions, but that nobody knows yet’. She was lovely in putting me at ease. I didn’t offer her much for the collaboration, but she laughed and said to me: ‘Do you think newspapers pay me much more?’. She listened to what I had in mind: I was excited about the idea of a fashion culture column that tackled the world of accessories with her irreverence, but also with the skillful style that only she knew how to best interpret. A perfect partnership was created: with Angelo they agreed on the topics to be discussed and then handed me over the texts to read. They were always perfect.

Thanks Giusi for having worked with us. You, a great fashion journalist, took ‘newcomers’ by the hand and encouraged us to create something beautiful. When Angelo brought you a bouquet of flowers

with the number that had just come out and you complimented him, he left the house enthusiastic and proud. We will carry you in our hearts and we will cherish with gratitude what you have done for us.

Have a good trip”.

While I assemble the tripods, turn on the lights and get ready to shoot, I can hear Giusi and Angelo chatting animatedly. I almost duck out, I do not feel able to cope with their considerations, analyses and criticisms, sometimes ruthless but sharp. It is clear to me how much passion for fashion, but also and above all for culture and society, vibrates between these two souls.

The interview is over. In the elevator, Angelo says: “After the first issues of the magazine we got into confidence and would spend evenings recalling the splendours of the 80s and 90s.

A friendship was born with an intelligent, extremely cultured woman,

whose words are capable of dragging you to the more fascinating side of fashion. She told me that she liked collaborating with us because she felt like she was going back to the days when beautiful magazines were made, in which the care for photography, creativity and Italian taste were in the first place. I have only one regret: she promised a photo shoot of her personal bag collection… I want to keep imagining that we will do that shoot. Missing her will be less painful”.

It stopped snowing outside. We go back to the car carrying our equipment under our arms like before, but with the feeling of having left behind something much more important. Because if Milan transforms snow into coal, Giusi transformed fashion into a lofty story about tradition. We already miss your passion, your courage to go to the bottom and, when necessary, shuffle the cards.

Matteo Sessa Vitali My world: the cartoons

L

a sua passione per i fumetti inizia presto, già sui banchi di scuola, quando durante le lezioni non perde occasione per “lavorare indefessamente alla produzione di caricature di compagni e insegnanti” ispirate all’opera di grandi fumettisti come Benito Jacovitti, il cui lavoro osserva e ammira all’interno degli albi che si fa regalare dal padre non appena possibile. È così che l’osservazione della realtà, e di ciò che lo circonda, diventa - ieri come oggi - una fonte inesauribile di lavoro e creatività, il punto di partenza per dar vita a serie di fumetti come ‘When They Were Kids’, ispirato al mondo della moda e popolato di personaggi unici e iconici che Matto incontra nel corso dei vent’anni in cui lavora per i grandi gruppi del lusso, e che immagina in versione kids in situazioni originali e divertenti.

“Non sono cresciuto con il sogno di lavorare nella moda, ci sono capitato per caso, ma me ne sono velocemente innamorato ed è diventata presto la mia professione. Mi piace lavorare con i creativi e, da italiano da tanti anni trapiantato all’estero (vivo a New York da oltre dodici anni), amo il prodotto e il suo legame con il territorio e la tradizione”.

Oggi, dopo oltre 200 vignette della serie ‘Corona Kid’ (dove il temibile Corona Virus è immaginato come un inoffensivo e quasi simpatico ragazzino), Matteo sente il bisogno di voltare pagina e guarda con interesse ai nuovi media. “Sono fortemente intrigato dal mondo degli NFT e sto cercando di capire se ci sia spazio per me, per fare qualcosa di divertente in quest’ambito…”.

His passion for comic books began at an early age, when in school and during class, he never missed out on the opportunity to “work relentlessly on creating caricatures of his classmates and teachers”, taking his inspiration from the works of great cartoonists like Benito Jacovitti, whose work he observed and admired in the comic books he would have his father purchase for him as soon as they were released. I like working with creative talents and, as an Italian who has now been living abroad for numerous years (I’ve lived in New York for over twelve years), I love the fashion product and its connection with the territory and tradition”.

Today, after over 200 comics in the series ‘Corona Kid’ (where the much-feared Corona Virus is imagined as a harmless and almost likable kid), Matteo feels the need to move on and start looking to new media. “I am quite intrigued by the world of NFT and am trying to understand if there is room for me to maybe do something fun in this field…”.

orge un nuovo tempo per Parigi, scandito da un ritmo ben preciso. Ricorda l’andamento lento di un balletto classico che, tra variazioni di musica e stile, porta in scena il dramma e il sogno sullo stesso palco. Due stati psichici diversi per qualche giorno convivono, alternandosi, sullo stage immenso dell’ultima tappa di questo viaggio spaziale della AI22, che non si arresta nemmeno davanti alla crudeltà degli eventi recenti. Se New York era sinonimo di purezza stilistica, Londra di costruzione a contrasto, e Milano di rivisitazione dei codici estetici, allora Parigi si presenta come l’ultimo atto di questo spettacolo, l’ultimo capitolo di un romanzo dove ogni personaggio si mostra, al contrario, vestendosi di collezioni che spaziano dalle forme organiche di Rick Owens alle linee più esili di Saint Laurent.

Così, dopo una ricerca smisurata tra archivi e viaggi ideali per terre lontane, l’AI22 raggiunge nuove mete, proponendosi come testimone non solo del ritorno on stage di diversi brand, ma anche di denunce sociali che si caricano (d’altronde i tempi correnti lo richiedono) di peso e di una sincerità capace di colpire il pubblico lentamente tornato a riempire gli spazi fisici degli show nella capitale francese e non. Schiaparelli, con il suo surrealismo rivisitato in chiave contemporanea, crea una aurea artistica quanto pratica intorno al concetto di ‘donna’ che, come una scultura d’oro rivestita di tessuti satinati, si anima. La collezione di Dior, invece, richiama la lotta femminista, forse in modo più esplicito rispetto alle precedenti proposte della direttrice creativa romana. Si passa anche per Balmain, con la sua armatura hi-tech che scolpisce e delinea forme a lungo lasciate nascoste dalla fluidità di abiti e cappotti. Proprio questi, ora, si vanno a stringere e irrigidire. Lo stesso Anthony Vaccarello, alla guida di Saint Laurent, presenta una figura femminile sempre esile, ma che ora si trasforma in uno spettro della notte, vestita di un nero accecante incorniciato in un rosa ovattato. Lontano dalle luci soffuse della sera, Rick Owens mostra la sua divinità pagana: una venere poliforme vestita di tinte fosche e veli spessi, che ricorda la protagonista di un mito antico.

In una Parigi di 7 giorni l’idea di ‘bello’ lascia spazio a quella mutevole di ‘utilità’, da non intendersi in senso pratico, ma in quello più concettuale di servizio: una moda posta al servizio di una società multiforme che vuole narrare tutto e tutti, nessuno escluso, pur lasciando le porte sempre socchiuse e mai totalmente aperte. Alla fine, è risaputo, la moda è autarchia.

A new time arises for Paris, marked by a precise rhythm. It recalls the slow pace of a classical ballet which, between variations of music and style, brings drama and dreams onto the same stage. Two different psychic states coexist for a few days, alternating each other on the immense stage of the last leg of this AI22 space journey without stopping, not even in the face of the recent cruel events. If New York was synonymous with stylistic purity, London with contrasting construction, and Milan with reinterpretation of aesthetic codes, then Paris presents itself as the last act of this show, the last chapter of a novel where the different characters show themselves, on the contrary, dressed up in collections that range from Rick Owens’ organic shapes to Saint Laurent’s more slender lines. After an immense search between archives and ideal travels to distant lands, the AI22 reaches thus new goals, proposing itself as a witness not only of the return to the stage of different brands, but also to social complaints that are loaded (on the other hand, current times require it) of weight and sincerity capable of striking the public, slowly returning to fill the physical spaces of the shows in the French capital and beyond. Schiaparelli, with its surrealism revisited in a contemporary key, creates an artistic and practical aura around the concept of ‘woman’ who comes to life like a gold sculpture covered with satin fabrics. The Dior collection, instead, recalls the feminist struggle, perhaps more explicitly than the previous proposals of the Roman creative director. We also pass through Balmain, with its hi-tech armor that sculpts and outlines shapes left hidden for a long time by the fluidity of dresses and coats. Precisely these, now, are going to tighten and stiffen. Anthony Vaccarello himself, at the helm of Saint Laurent, presents a slender feminine figure, now transformed into a ghost of the night, dressed in blinding black framed in a hushed pink. Far from the soft lights of the evening, Rick Owens shows his pagan divinity: a polyform Venus dressed in dark colours and thick veils, reminiscent of the protagonist of an ancient myth.

In a 7-day Paris, the idea of ‘beauty’ gives way to the elusive proposition of ‘usefulness’, not to be understood in a practical sense, but in the more conceptual sense of service: a fashion placed at the service of a multifaceted society that wants to narrate everything and everyone, no one excluded, while leaving the doors always ajar and never totally open. In the end, it is well known, fashion is autarchic.

Biella… is beautiful!

coprire Biella significa innamorarsi di un territorio, quello piemontese, che accoglie il visitatore con il suo paesaggio ricco e frastagliato esteso dalle pianure, dove abbondano risaie e tenute agricole, fino all’intero arco alpino. Una terra in cui la storia si vede, si tocca, si respira: la storia medievale, soprattutto, che vive nei numerosi borghi e ricetti di cui è costellata la città. Che si divide nella parte alta, Piazzo, e in quella più bassa e arcaica, Piano, che ruota intorno all’immenso Duomo, la cattedrale di Santo Stefano, che identifica il Vernato, il cui fascino è dato dagli edifici antichi che nascono lungo le sue strette vie acciottolate, e al Battistero di San Giovanni Battista, con i suoi magnifici affreschi trecenteschi. Una città da camminare, nel vero senso della parola, seguendo la scia degli scorci deliziosi che la rendono un gioiello e che conducono alla sua parte più alta, il nucleo medievale.

Qui sono gli incantevoli palazzi a farla da padrone e la Cittadellarte - Fondazione Pistoletto, istituita da uno dei biellesi più celebri, nonché uno tra i principali esponenti dell’arte povera, Michelangelo Pistoletto. Un grande laboratorio creativo profondamente legato allo strato sociale, vivace per attività culturali e, soprattutto, per la collezione permanente delle opere dell’artista italiano.

Ma Biella è anche le Alpi, con la loro storia religiosa racchiusa nella

via della fede, un percorso tra Santuari e Sacri Monti, di cui il più celebre e visitato è senza dubbio il Santuario di Oropa che svetta a oltre 1000 metri sopra la città e che, leggenda vuole, fosse stato fondato nel 369 da Eusebio, primo vescovo di Vercelli in fuga da una persecuzione. Un complesso scenografico il cui cuore architettonico è racchiuso, come uno scrigno, dalle Alpi biellesi, e dove, in una delle due basiliche, si trova la Madonna Nera, storica protettrice dei cittadini piemontesi contro le pestilenze passate. Senza prescindere dall’importante sistema eco-museale biellese, la cui versatilità permette di fare un salto indietro nel tempo per rivivere tanto i fasti del passato quanto le meraviglie di quel presente industrializzato i cui strali ‘archeologici’ arrivano fino ad oggi. Perché, è proprio il caso di dirlo, la storia della città è intrecciata con quella del tessuto e della produzione ad esso legata che si può ripercorrere attraversando la strada della lana, un itinerario che collega i diversi siti collocati lungo le vallate. Non è un caso che l’Unesco abbia riconosciuto a Biella, nel 2019, il premio di Città Creativa nel settore Craft&Art e che di questo know-how sia manifesto il Gruppo Zegna, storica impresa di tessuti di cui è superfluo ricordare la maestria nota in tutto il mondo, che in omaggio al territorio e per valorizzarlo ulteriormente, ha voluto creare un’area incontaminata, oggetto di un’importante opera di riforestazione, chiamata Oasi Zegna. Oltre 100 km2 a ridosso delle montagne che offrono, a tutti, la possibilità di immergersi nella natura e che sono profondamente legati alla cultura, perché del complesso fanno parte anche ZegnArt, dedicato all’arte contemporanea, la Fondazione Zegna, nata per dare continuità ai valori del capostipite, e Casa Zegna, un archivio storico omnicomprensivo e polo di aggregazione culturale.

Una filosofia mirata alla tutela dell’ambiente di cui è protagonista anche il Parco Naturale della Burcina, con il suo trionfo di specie vegetali che lasciano il visitatore a bocca aperta.

Il territorio biellese, poi, è anche e soprattutto da gustare. L’enogastronomia qui è oggetto di un culto di cui fanno parte i formaggi (la toma biellese, il maccagno, i caprini) e i salumi (come la Paletta di Coggiola), la polenta taragna e i dolci come i canestrelli di Crevacuore, senza dimenticare i vini (l’Erbaluce Doc e il Canavese, oltre al Bramaterra, al Lessona e al Coste della Sesia).

Biella non è solo la capitale piemontese dell’outdoor grazie ai suoi immensi spazi aperti tutti da percorre, ma è anche la meta ideale per chi desidera trascorrere un fine settimana lontano dalla città per dedicarsi allo shopping. Da iniziare, senza dubbio, da quello gourmet, con una sosta alla Pasticceria Jeantet per scoprire i già citati canestrelli innaffiati da un bicchiere di Ratafià, noto liquore a base di ciliegie. E, dopo aver appagato la gola, è d’obbligo proseguire con un tour per gli spacci aziendali dei famosi lanifici – dallo storico Lanificio Cerruti all’outlet Zegna, dal Lanificio Fratelli Piacenza al The Place, unico Luxury Outlet del Nord Italia - per concludere

con un passaggio da Thanks, boutique di ricerca nel centro cittadino, caratterizzato da un coté design il cui stile si ritrova nella giusta commistione tra heritage e avanguardia di nicchia.

Discovering Biella means falling in love with a territory, namely Piedmont, which welcomes visitors with its rich and jagged landscape stretching from the plains, where rice fields and farms abound, to the entire Alpine arc. A land where history can be seen, touched and breathed: medieval history, above all, which lives on in the numerous villages and refuges that dot the city. It is divided into the upper part, Piazzo, and the lower and or archaic part, Piano, which revolves around the immense Cathedral of Santo Stefano, which identifies the suburb of Vernato, whose charm is given by the ancient buildings that spring up along its narrow cobbled streets, and the Baptistery of San Giovanni Battista, with its magnificent 14th-century frescoes. A city to be walked, in the true sense of the word, following the trail of delightful views that make it a jewel and that lead to its highest part, the medieval nucleus. This area is dominated by enchanting palazzos and the Cittadellarte - Fondazione Pistoletto, set up by one of Biella’s most famous citizens and one of the leading exponents of Arte Povera, Michelangelo Pistoletto.

A large creative laboratory deeply linked to the social stratum, enlivened by its cultural activities and, above all, by its permanent collection of the Italian artist’s works.

But Biella is also the Alps, with their religious history enclosed in the Via della Fede (Path of Faith), a route through the Sanctuaries and Sacred Mountains, the most famous and visited of which is undoubtedly the Sanctuary of Oropa, which rises more than 1000 metres above the city and which, according to legend, was founded in 369 by Eusebio, the first bishop of Vercelli, fleeing persecution. A picturesque complex whose architectural heart is enclosed, like a jewellery box, by the Biella Alps, and where, one of the two basilicas, houses the Black Madonna, the historical protector of the Piedmontese people against past plagues. Worth mentioning is also Biella’s important eco-museum system, whose versatility allows visitors to step back in time to relive both the glories of the past and the marvels of the industrialised present, whose ‘archaeological’ arrows reach us today. Because, it has to be said, the history of the city is intertwined with that of textiles and their production, which can be retraced by following the wool road, an itinerary linking the various sites located along the valleys. It is no coincidence that in 2019 Biella became part of the network of UNESCO Creative Cities in the Crafts and Art sector and that the Zegna Group, a historic textile company whose mastery is renowned throughout the world, is a manifestation of this know-how. As a tribute to the territory and to further enhance its value, the Group

decided to create an uncontaminated area, the subject of a major reforestation project, called the Zegna Oasis. Over 100 square kilometres close to the mountains offer everyone the chance to immerse themselves in nature and are deeply linked to culture because the complex also includes ZegnArt, dedicated to contemporary art, the Zegna Foundation, created to give continuity to the values of the forefathers, and Casa Zegna, a comprehensive historical archive and cultural centre. The Burcina Natural Reserve is also a protagonist of this philosophy aimed at protecting the environment, with its triumph of plant species that leave visitors speechless.

The territory of Biella is also and above all, to be savoured. Food and wine are a cult here, with cheeses (the Toma Biellese, Maccagno, goats’ milk cheeses) and cured meats (such as Paletta di Coggiola), polenta taragna and sweet delicacies such as the canestrelli di Crevacuore, not to mention the wines (Erbaluce DOC and Canavese, as well as Bramaterra, Lessona and Coste Della Sesia).

Biella is not only Piedmont’s outdoor capital, thanks to its immense open spaces to be explored, but it is also the ideal destination for those who want to spend a weekend away from the city to do some shopping. The best place to start is undoubtedly gourmet shopping, with a stop at the Pasticceria Jeantet to try the aforementioned canestrelli biscuits washed down with a glass of Ratafià, a well-known cherry liqueur. And, after, having satisfied your taste buds, you can continue with a tour of the factory outlets of the famous wool companies – from the historic Lanificio Cerruti to the Zegna outlet, from the Lanificio Fratelli Piacenza to The Place, the only Luxury Outlet in Northern Italy – to conclude with a visit to Thanks, a boutique in the city centre, characterised by a coté design whose style is found in the right mix of heritage and niche avant-garde brands.

“Indubbiamente il rapporto umano in una realtà piccola è fondamentale. È vero che la clientela ha sempre un occhio sull’e-commerce, ma la boutique fornisce un servizio che fa la differenza: mi riferisco, per quanto mi riguarda, agli appuntamenti mirati a boutique chiusa che ricreano quel clima di atelier e quella personalizzazione dell’acquisto che il cliente apprezza infinitamente.”

Quando allestisce le vetrine pensa a una precisa tipologia di cliente o cerca piuttosto di assecondare lo spirito dei singoli capi?

“Cerco di assecondare lo spirito dei singoli capi ricreando, con l’allestimento, il mood e quell’idea di collezione che ho recepito nel momento del buying.”

Cosa vorrebbe vedere nel futuro della moda, e della moda italiana?

“Io sono una nostalgica e amo quel senso di eleganza senza tempo che la moda mi ha sempre trasmesso: vorrei meno estremismo nelle proposte e maggiore senso della misura. Sicuramente anche il discorso della sostenibilità è importante, ma riprendere quel gusto per la classicità che gli archivi della moda tramandano sarebbe fantastico.”

el cuore di Biella c’è una boutique di ricerca dove moda e design si uniscono in maniera stilisticamente impattante per offrire un’esperienza di shopping totalizzante in cui il classico si fonde con l’avanguardia per realizzare un crush unico. Un negozio pensato per un target trasversale, ideato da due biellesi doc, Géraldine Alasio e Paolo Camerano, che nella selezione di brand e stilisti proposti, riflette esattamente la visione dei proprietari per i quali il bel vestire è un mantra che viene completato dall’anima di chi lo sceglie.

Che cosa definisce l’approccio di Thanks allo stile?

“Lo stile coincide con un’innovazione che rimane nei canoni dell’eleganza, un concetto che si traduce nella proposta di Thanks in cui si ritrova il frutto della mia esperienza in giro per il mondo e la ricerca di una novità che non si allontana mai troppo dal mio senso del gusto e del bello.”

Da che cosa si parte per fare un buon buying?

“Parto sempre dalla mia idea di bello e di eleganza, anche quando mi trovo a contatto con la tendenza. Il segreto di un buon buying, a mio avviso, coincide con l’equilibrio tra ciò che è attuale e quello che mi piace, senza dimenticare le esigenze della mia clientela che, in una città piccola come Biella, sono decisamente prioritarie.”

“Il successo è determinato dal rapporto con il cliente e dalla coerenza nella proposta: chi entra da Thanks deve sapere che troverà quello di cui ha bisogno e non potrà mai dire ‘non so cosa mettermi!’. È altrettanto importante, a mio avviso, creare servizi personalizzati così come eventi che trascendano la moda tout court per legarsi al territorio in modo sempre più stretto. Da Thanks, questo aspetto si ritrova tanto nelle proposte moda di brand locali incentrati sull’artigianalità, quanto nei link con aziende che esulano dalla moda e che ci scelgono come punto di riferimento e come vetrina importante per i loro prodotti.”

Quale parte del suo lavoro considera più esaltante?

“La parte più bella è senza dubbio il riscontro da parte del cliente che ha ben accolto la nostra sfida di esplorare anche nuove declinazioni (high tech, libri, accessori, vino) e che ci permettono di assumere sempre di più l’aspetto di un concept store.”

La tendenza che l’ha conquistata dopo aver scoperto molti designer del passato?

“Sicuramente la reinterpretazione della Birkenstock svolta da diversi stilisti, come quella firmata Vanessa Bruno. In passato abbiamo puntato su progetti innovativi (come la capsule Schneiders by Peter Pilotto) e ancora oggi ci soffermiamo su quelle novità ‘rivoluzionarie ma non troppo’ che risultano sempre in continuità con il nostro territorio e con i valori del nostro stile.”

Come descriverebbe la zona di Biella in termini di stile?

“Biella è una città elegante i cui abitanti vogliono vestirsi bene. Anche

What would you like to see in the future of fashion, and of Italian fashion?

“I’m nostalgic, and I love the timeless beauty that fashion has always conveyed to me: I’d want to see less fanaticism and more proportion in the suggestions. Of course, there’s the question of sustainability to consider, but resurrecting the fashion archives’ penchant for classicism would be amazing.”

A research boutique in the centre of Biella brings together fashion and design in a stylistically impactful way to provide an all-encompassing shopping experience where the classic meets the avantgarde to create a unique crush. A store developed for a transversal aim, conceived by two of Biella origins, Géraldine Alasio and Paolo Camerano, who, in the brands and stylists proposed, perfectly express the vision of the founders, who believe that beautiful dressing is a mantra that is fulfilled by the soul of people who choose it.

What defines Thanks’s approach to style?

“The style corresponds to an innovation that adheres to the canons of elegance, a concept that manifests itself in the Thanks proposal, in which we discover the fruit of my trips throughout the world and the pursuit of novelty that never strays too far from my sense of taste and beauty”.

What do you start from to make a good buying?

“Even though I’m working with a trend, I always start with my own vision of beauty and elegance. The secret to excellent buying, in my opinion, is striking a balance between what is current and what I enjoy, while also considering the demands of my clients, who, in a tiny town like Biella, are unquestionably important.”

If e-commerce makes the same brands available everywhere, the traditional boutique could vary its offering while preserving local uniqueness: do you see this as a potential growth opportunity?

“In a limited reality, personal relationships are undeniably important.

Customers do keep an eye on e-commerce, but the boutique provides a service that distinguishes itself: I’m referring, in my opinion, to the appointments aimed at closed boutiques that recreate the atelier atmosphere and the personalization of the ‘purchase that the customer appreciates so highly.”

What factors influence a store’s success today?

“The customer relationship and the constancy of the proposal determine success: people who enter Thanks must know that they will find what they need and will never have to say, “I don’t know what to wear!” Personalized services and activities that exceed fashion tout court, in my opinion, are equally crucial to bind to the territory in an increasingly closer way. At Thanks, This component can be found in both the fashion proposals of local firms focused on workmanship and the connections with enterprises that go beyond fashion and select us as a reference point and an important presentation for their products.”

What aspect of your job excites you the most?

“The best aspect is probably the consumer feedback, which has embraced our challenge to expand out into new areas (high-tech, books, accessories, and wine), allowing us to take on more and more of a concept store appearance.”

What is the trend that has fascinated you after exploring numerous prior designers?

“Certainly, the many designers’ reinterpretations of Birkenstock, such as the one signed by Vanessa Bruno. We have previously focused on new initiatives (such as Peter Pilotto’s Schneiders capsule) and continue to do so now on ‘revolutionary but not excessive’ advances that are always in keeping with our territory and style principles”.

“Biella is a sophisticated city with residents who take pride in their appearance. Even the young, who are fashion-conscious and travel frequently, follow this course.”

Don’t call them slippers

hi li ama, non può farne a meno. Chi dice di non apprezzarli, alla fine cede alla loro comodità. Sono i sandali – ciabatta ai piedi di oltre 30 mila persone al mondo che, finalmente sdoganato l’immaginario che li vedeva indossati (con calzino di spugna incluso) solo dai turisti tedeschi in vacanza sull’Adriatico, ora hanno conquistato passerelle e front row con la complicità, naturalmente, degli stilisti più cool. Familiari, riconoscibili e insostituibili, hanno perso la loro etichetta di ugly shoes per diventare irresistibili e, soprattutto, insostituibili in ogni occasione.

Che sia a causa del trionfo dell’estetica normcore degli ultimi anni o per un capriccio (comodo) femminile diventato status quo, poco importa. Da un certo momento in poi, le scarpe con le suole in sughero guarnite da fasce di cuoio, infradito o fibbie che siano, quelle stesse che gli hippie degli anni Sessanta portavano come una dichiarazione di intenti e che i puristi del look guardavano arricciando il naso, sono diventate icona. Che ogni fashionista – e non solo – che si rispetti, possiede, colleziona e indossa senza poterne fare a meno. Ma al netto dello stile, è la storia di questa calzatura che, nella sua versione originale, amplifica una filosofia di benessere, di qualità e di tradizione in cui si ritrova l’essenza del vero lusso quotidiano. Tedesche doc (la loro origine risale al 1774) e con un’anima puntata alla perfezione, in primis podologica, le Birkenstock furono create inizialmente per l’indosso medicale e solo più tardi, negli anni 60 dello scorso decennio, videro la luce i primi sandali per profani, più precisamente l’Arizona con i due fascioni.

del momento, ma senza mai perdere di vista gli atout delle origini. Complice la tendenza pandemica alla comodità casalinga e gli ammiccamenti al casual degli stilisti più mainstream, le Birkenstock e le loro derivazioni si sono trasformate in icone di stile, cult da sempre per star di Hollywood quanto per quelle nazionali (vedere alla voce Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, Chiara Ferragni, per citarne alcune), mostrandosi anche capaci di calcare il red carpet degli Oscar (con una certa Frances McDormand in Birkenstock giallo squillante by Valentino).

Una strada lastricata di successi, rasoterra solo nella forma, che si è arricchita di note eleganti proprio quando i designer, intercettandone il potenziale, hanno piegato la loro forma a cornice per le sperimentazioni dei loro codici estetici identitari. Pioniera è stata Phoebe Philo che, quando era direttore artistico di Céline, fece sfilare nella SS 2013 un paio di Arizona nere ricoperte di una skin di visone. Subito dopo arrivarono le collaborazioni con Jil Sander, la capsule collection con Rick Owens immediatamente sold out, con Proenza Schouler e con il menswear di Valentino fino alle ultime, in ordine di tempo, con Manolo Blahnik e Dior. Senza dimenticare che, nel frattempo, la quota di maggioranza dell’azienda tedesca è stata acquisita da Monsieur Bernard Arnaud di LVMH, il che ha solo fatto aumentarne il potenziale insieme di crescita e di leggenda.

Ma non sono i soli. Perché come si conviene a ogni mito che si rispetti, le Birkenstock hanno dato il via a una generazione di emuli di cui si sono impadronite le maison più cool (Isabel Marant in primis, ma anche Burberry, Givenchy, Prada…) cimentandosi in una lezione di stile lussuoso sempre pronta a nuove declinazioni. Ma con un solo credo: come as you are!

Those who love them cannot do without them. Even those who claim they don’t like them inevitably lead to their comfort. They are the sandals - slippers on the feet of over 30 thousand people around the world who, after clearing the imagination that saw them worn (with terry sock included) only by German tourists on holiday on the Adriatic, have now conquered catwalks and front rows with the complicity, of course, of the coolest designers. They have lost their ugly shoes label to become seductive and, above all, irreplaceable on any occasion.

It doesn’t matter if it’s because of the recent triumph of normcore aesthetics or because of a (pleasant) feminine whim that has become the norm. Shoes with cork soles decorated with leather bands, flip-flops, or buckles, the same ones that the hippies of the 1960s wore as a declaration of intent and that purist of the look wrinkled their noses at, have become symbols from a certain point on. That every - not just - self-respecting fashionista has, collects, and wears because simply can’t live without it. But, regardless of fashion, it is the narrative of this shoe that, in its original form, encapsulates a concept of well-being, quality, and tradition, which is the essence of true everyday luxury.

Genuine German (their origin dates back to 1774) and with a soul aimed at perfection, especially podiatric, the Birkenstocks were first intended for medical wear and only later, in the 1960s, saw the light of the first sandals for laymen, more especially the Arizona with the two bands. They’ll be the ones to take the brand through the 90s boom, with a line of models capable of interpreting the Zeitgeist of the time while never losing sight of the brand’s roots. Thanks to the pandemic trend towards home comfort and the casual winks of

the most mainstream designers, Birkenstocks and their derivations have become style icons, always cult for Hollywood stars as well as national ones (see Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, Chiara Ferragni, to name a few), also demonstrating herself capable of walking the red carpet of the Oscars (with a certain Frances McDormand in bright yellow Birkenstock by Valentino).

A route built with successes, close to the ground only in form, that was enriched with graceful notes when the designers, realizing its potential, folded their shape into a frame for the testing of their aesthetic identity codes. Phoebe Philo, when she was the artistic director of Céline, was a pioneer, showing a pair of black Arizizos coated in mink skin on the SS 2013 runway. After that followed collaborations with Jil Sander, Rick Owens’ capsule collection, Proenza Schouler, and Valentino’s menswear, up to the most recent, in chronological order, with Manolo Blahnik and Dior.

They aren’t the only ones, though. Because, as befitting any selfrespecting legend, Birkenstocks have given way to a generation of imitators who have taken over the coolest fashion houses (Isabel Marant first and foremost, but also Burberry, Givenchy, Prada, and so on) by engaging in a lesson of luxurious style that is always ready for new declinations. However, there is only one rule: come as you are!

Adidas Originals and its longtime partne, Parley for the Oceans, are back with a collection of iconic products, re-designed for a better future.

For the new season, Adidas and Parley have joined forces to reinterpret some iconic products in a sustainable and green key and project the unmistakable sneakers straight into the future. Each shoe is made with a yarn containing at least 50% of Parley Ocean Plastic, obtained from recycled plastic waste from the oceans, while the remaining 50% of yarn is made with recycled polyester. The undisputed protagonists of the collection are two reinterpretations of the iconic Nizza model: Nizza Parley Hi and Nizza Parley Lo are made with wrapped straps and assembled layer by layer to minimise waste in the production process. The rest of the collection includes a series of reinterpretations of various models (Superstar, Nizza Hi, Stan Smith, ZX 8000, Forum and NMD_R1), as well as two women’s exclusives - Forum Bold W and Nizza Platform W -, all conceived to transform the waste in trendy fashion.

Il nome prende ispirazione dai libri dell’amicizia rinascimentali (“alba amicorum” in latino), nei quali i giovani uomini e donne dell’Europa del XVI secolo riponevano le loro riflessioni e pensieri della giornata, invitando poi amici e studenti a condividere i loro pensieri in occasione di viaggi e incontri.

Allo stesso modo in cui oggi l’artista e grafica Darshana Shilpi Rouget usa le sue sciarpe artistiche come tela per esprimere pensieri e idee attraverso collaborazioni con artisti e amici di tutto il mondo, opere che sono poi proposte come ‘accessori esclusivi’ con il brand Alba Amicorum. L’Atelier Alba Amicorum ha, infatti, aperto le sue porte nel 2020, nella storica Belgravia, nel centro storico di Londra, proponendosi come studio e negozio di sciarpe di lusso, ‘arte tessile indossabile’ realizzata in collaborazione con artisti internazionali operanti in diverse discipline. Ogni opera d’arte originale è meticolosamente stampata in edizioni limitate sulle migliori sete, cashmere, e altri tessuti naturali da un’abile famiglia di artigiani italiani a Como. In essa, ad ogni dimensione temporale viene attribuita una specifica tecnica di lavorazione: la filigrana artigianale rappresenta concettualmente il passato, l’upcycling di oggetti industriali è il presente come simbolo di economia circolare ed etica, e la tecnologia della stampa 3D caratterizza il futuro dell’avanguardia, che sa ispirarsi alla tradizione con coerenza e coraggio.

Alba Amicorum: the art of standing out Wearable textile art and luxury scarf atelier in the heart of Belgravia, London. The name is inspired by the Renaissance friendship books (“alba amicorum” in Latin) in which youngsters of Europe’s sixteenth century put their reflections and thoughts of the day, inviting friends and students to share their considerations during journeys and meetings. In the same way the artist and graphic designer Darshana Shilpi Rouget uses today her artistic scarves as canvas to express thoughts and ideas through collaborations with artists and friends from all over the world, works that are then proposed as ‘exclusive accessories’ with the brand Alba Amicorum. Atelier Alba Amicorum opened in fact its doors in 2020, in the historic Belgravia, in the historic centre of London, proposing itself as a studio and shop for luxury scarves, ‘wearable textile art’ created in partnership with international artists operating in different disciplines. Each original artwork is meticulously printed in limited editions on the finest silks, cashmere, and other natural fabrics by a skilled family of Italian artisans in Como.

There are also Paulownia wooden gift boxes, handmade in Japan.

Past Present Future Collection The debut capsule Invaerso, by designer Maria Clelia Scuteri, was born as a synthesis of different skills and production techniques, in an experimental vision of fashion jewellery.

In it, a specific processing technique is attributed to each temporal dimension: the artisan watermark conceptually represents the past, the upcycling of industrial objects is the present as a symbol of circular and ethical economy, and the technology of 3D printing characterises the future of the avant-garde, which knows how to draw inspiration from tradition with coherence and courage.

Matteo Perin, a ‘lifestyle designer’, as he likes to define himself, presents his latest creation of footwear ‘born to breathe’, which combines creativity with a strong personal imprint.

He likes to call himself a ‘lifestyle designer’, a word he coined since he creates clothing, objects and furnishings that adapt as closely as possible to the lifestyle of the people who choose them. But Matteo Perin’s passion for design started from fashion, when as a boy he created his own personal look and started to make himself known by drawing and painting blue jeans. Still very young, he moved to Los Angeles where some TV fiction actors chose to have their jeans painted by him, so that by word of mouth he soon acquired fame and clientele. Today he designs high fashion garments but also jewellery, furnishings, accessories and footwear. In this context, his latest creations are titled ‘Shark Capri’ and ‘Shark Miami’: a suede moccasin, with hand-cut gills, enriched with nappa edging and tail.

Designed on a yacht off the coast of the Bahamas, it is a shoe built to “breathe” and fully experience the magic of summer.

Ma non solo: tutti i fornitori sono localizzati nella zona di San Joao de Madeira, in un raggio di una trentina di chilometri, e questo permette di ridurre l’emissione di gas serra e di agenti inquinanti, oltre che rendere più veloci e reattive le commesse di produzione. Inoltre, il brand ha scelto di impiegare esclusivamente pellami certificati LWG (Leather Working Group), provenienti da Italia, Spagna, Portogallo, Francia e Germania, per garantire che vengano applicati i metodi ambientali più avanzati e condizioni di produzione adeguate. Allo stesso tempo, le suole incorporano gomma riciclata al 70% e naturale al 30%. Scelte di produzione che riflettono un’etica e un pensiero sottostante, secondo i quali le nostre azioni non possono scontrarsi con il nostro futuro e quello dei nostri figli, né con i nostri valori.

An exceptional man who wanted to bring his unique excellence and spirit into signature shoes that contain his essence and story. Sporty, yet glamorous, these shoes allow all those who wear them to always feel at ease – both during social occasions, as well as during times of relax and leisure. The meticulous design and attention to details is combined with constant research onto the well-being of the foot and comfort, in order to give life to shoes destined to last over time.

Production is entirely made in Portugal, a country that has a long shoemaking tradition, with a great availability of raw materials and craftsmanship par excellence.

Plus, all suppliers are located in the area of San Joao de Madeira, at a distance of no more than thirty kilometres, thereby reducing greenhouse emissions and polluting agents, while also making production work orders quicker and easier to fulfil. At the same time, the brand chose to exclusively use certified LWG (Leather Working Group) leathers coming from Italy, Spain, Portugal, France and Germany, in order to ensure the most advanced environmental methods are applied, as well as appropriate production conditions.

Finally, the soles incorporate rubber that is 70% recycled and 30% natural.

All these production choices reflect an ethical code and underlying commitment, where our actions cannot collide with our future and that of our children, nor our values.

resentata a Micam la nuova collezione di sneaker modaiole e personalizzabili, molto apprezzate anche dall’attrice e cantante Rosalinda Cannavò – in arte Adua Del Vesco, ospite nello stand del brand marchigiano.

Le emozioni si provano nell’anima. Si sentono anche sulla pelle quando sono particolarmente intense, ma il marchio Gio+ vuole andare oltre, vuole farle indossare. È facile calzare un paio di sneaker e stare comodi. Meno immediato sentirsi femminili senza un tacco 12. Non tutti ci riescono. Proprio per questo motivo le collezioni Gio+ sono speciali, perché vogliono emozionare attraverso gli occhi e poi, solo dopo aver colpito l’immaginario di chi le indossa, stupire anche per la leggerezza e il senso di libertà che trasmettono ai piedi. Le Gio+ voglionn essere comode ed eleganti, ma soprattutto originali, al di fuori dei canoni consolidati.

Rosalinda Cannavò – in arte Adua Del Vesco, esprime così il proprio apprezzamento, mentre osserva e poi indossa il paio personalizzato proprio per lei: “Di Gio+ apprezzo moltissimi aspetti: in primis, la comodità. E poi mi affascina tantissimo l’originalità della loro proposta di sneaker, oltre che la strepitosa possibilità di poterle personalizzare. Esaltano la femminilità di ogni donna, nonostante siano scarpe casual: un plus assoluto”.

Conclude Samuela Picchio: “Abbiamo scelto Adua perché è una ragazza semplice e spontanea come le nostre collezioni: semplici,

The new collection of fashionable and customisable sneakers was presented at Micam, and was highly appreciated also by the actress and singer Rosalinda Cannavò - alias Adua Del Vesco, guest in the stand of the Marche based brand.

Emotions are felt in the soul. They also feel on the skin when they are particularly intense, but the Gio+ brand wants to go further, it wants people to wear them. It is easy to put on a pair of sneakers and feel comfortable. Feeling feminine without five-inch heels is less immediate. Not everyone succeeds. Gio+ collections are special exactly for this reason, because they want to excite through the eyes and then, only after striking the imagination of the wearer, amaze also with the lightness and sense of freedom they transmit to feet. Gio+ want to be comfortable and elegant, but above all original, outside of established canons.
