Aaron Stewart, Executive Director Q: Can you talk about being a child of golf?

A: Growing up it was pretty special. I met a lot of people that I’m still really close to today in those PGA Tour kids’ daycare facilities. John Cook’s son, John.

Q: Your dad passed away when you were very young but, obviously, he influenced your passion for golf. How so?

A: I didn’t really play golf when my father was alive. I was 10 years old when he passed and I started playing seriously, practicing, and competing in tournaments, when I was in seventh grade. The O’Mearas, the Cooks, the Janzens, the Baker-Finchs were like my surrogate fathers and took me under their wing. I lost a big piece but others stepped up and were really great to me.

Q: Why didn’t you follow your dad’s footsteps into professional golf?

A: I kind of went to college (Southern Methodist University, Payne’s alma mater) with the intent of trying to play at the next level, but at the end there, I decided to go a different route. Mike (Flaskey) was putting together the Diamond Resorts Marketing Mentorship program and I was lucky enough to apply and get accepted. I’ve been off-andrunning since then. So, I’ve grown up with Diamond Resorts.

Also, it’s a very, very thin line between success in professional sports and never really making it. I had seen that grind. My father was a very successful professional and on my mom’s side my uncle was a professional, also. I knew what it took to become a professional golfer. I asked myself, ‘Is that what I want or do I want to go a different route?’ I made a decision and I’m very happy where I’m at today.

Q: Talk about your journey through the Diamond Resorts Marketing Mentorship program?

A: It was Mike’s vision to create this mentorship program and train people the Diamond Resorts way. He gave me Golf Central • Volume 20, Issue 9

the opportunity and I took it and ran, and I’m still here six years later.

Q: You’re the executive in charge of a top-tier professional golf event. Tell us about your hopes for the event?

A: First, I have to talk about the team I walked into and the talent-level they have. I really got lucky. We all want this event to become a staple in the Central Florida area for years to come and the activities we plan are geared towards everybody coming out and having a great experience.

Mike Flaskey, Tournament Founder Q: Were you coaching Aaron for this role?

A: From my standpoint, as a leader, I know we can teach someone the product. That’s not rocket science. So, in the case of Aaron, we played a lot of golf together and I noticed the fine qualities he had as a human being; his nature on the course and the gift he has in communication. When you kind of put all that in the mixing bowl, I was envisioning this Diamond Marketing Mentorship program as a way to bring someone like Aaron Stewart into our company.

Q: What made Aaron an ideal candidate for Diamond Resorts?

A: There are too many people in the industry who, quite frankly, are fans and that can have negative ramifications.

From Aaron’s perspective, he’s seen it all, been around it all. He grew up in it.

So he doesn’t come at this with a fan’s perspective. He comes at this with the perspective of doing his job and doing it very well.

Q: Talk about why Diamond Resorts wanted to own and host a major LPGA event?

A: There were a few key reasons we wanted to partner with the LPGA. One of the core values of our company is diversity and part of that is gender diversity. We love the aspect of professional women’s sports. We think that sends a great message to our members, our vacation owners, around

the globe. Another thing is that the demographic of the LPGA touches that Millennial category, which is the fastest growing segment of our membership base. That was also one of the reasons we wanted Aaron on board as he has one foot in that Millennial group.

One of the other great things about partnering with the LPGA is they are not rigid. They are open to working with you. There are things we do differently than a traditional tour event. We create a party atmosphere in-and-around the 18th hole. We have music playing while people are hitting their shots and putting. We only do that on one hole, but it’s designed to be different.

Q: What stands out to you about last year’s first-time partnership with the LPGA? A: One of the most impressive things I learned was that these ladies show up with a deep appreciation for the opportunity to be there. They are prepared and they know who they’re talking to. They are not only worldclass golfers, but they understand the business side of it. That is really refreshing for the people who are writing the check.

Q: What was the biggest challenge through the years as you grew the event?

A: It was important for us to not just be another golf tournament out there.

We did plenty of focus group studies.

We knew one thing that moved the needle for us was the celebrities. One of the hardest things we have to do is the invitation process because we only have 50 spots. We received 141 applications that we couldn’t honor this year. It’s a good problem but it’s hard.

Q: What is one of the things you are proudest of along the way of building the event?

A: I think there were a lot of people who had said that Orlando has so much going on, it doesn’t need another sports team, another professional golf tournament.

And I think we proved those critics wrong. I think we’ve put a product together that is only going to grow and it is something that all of us at Diamond Resorts are proud of.

Bobby Weed Redesign of Quail Ridge’s South Course Unveiled Renowned designer Bobby Weed believes his redesign of the acclaimed South Course at The Club at Quail Ridge will add another chapter of history to the high-end golf community.

“What I’m most excited about is people will still recognize the golf course,” Weed said. “Every hole has been improved and made more playable, from a strategy standpoint as well as an aesthetic standpoint.

“The golf course is designed not only for today’s member, but more importantly for the members of tomorrow.”

Weed has become one of the most in-demand architects in the U.S. He recently redesigned The Medalist and built Michael Jordan’s Grove XXIII, both exclusive clubs 40 miles away from Quail Ridge.

Weed’s task at Quail Ridge was to take a Joe Lee design that was built in 1974 and modernize it nearly a halfcentury later. TifEagle Bermuda grass has been installed on the greens and Bimini Bermuda has been used on the tees, fairways, collars and approaches and rough. St. Augustine grass was used in out-of-play areas.

The official grand opening was held on Thursday at The Club at Quail Ridge in front of a large gathering of members. Weed addressed the membership and provided a birds-eye view of the

course by narrating a drone tour of select holes.

“The members are excited about their new golf course,” Weed said. “It will afford more pleasure for all caliber of players. Our goal was to accommodate all levels of play using a variety of tees, more open approaches and wide fairways with strategic bunkering.

“I’ve always said a good club starts with a good golf course, but the membership really makes the club what it is, and at Quail Ridge they are very passionate about the game.”

Two years after a new $23 million new clubhouse was built in late 2017, the golf redesign was part of a $10 million project that included irrigation improvements to the community and expansion of the club’s recently opened new Spa & Fitness Center.

“This was a tremendous team effort with Bobby Weed at the helm and fits perfectly with the enhanced member experience of all the new amenities around Quail Ridge. Our members look forward to playing and showcasing our challenging and beautiful new South Course,” said Bill Langley, COO at Quail Ridge.

The South Course has hosted top amateur events such as the Society of Seniors Championship – the society’s national headquarters is at Quail Ridge – the Florida State Senior Amateur Championship, U.S. Open qualifying and the Palm Beach County Amateur.

“Having a designer like Bobby Weed modernize our golf course has given Quail Ridge another boost,” said Quail Ridge Director of Golf, Daniel Brosnihan. “Potential members see the new clubhouse, upgraded tennis and fitness facilities and the new golf course.

It’s hard to imagine that prospective members could find a better place to call home than Quail Ridge.

Georgia Golf's Top Five Water Holes: Beyond Amen Corner Three of the most famous golf holes in Georgia are the 11th, 12th, and 13th holes at the Augusta National Golf Club, the home of the Masters golf tournament. One common thread that connects those three holes – famously known as Amen Corner – is Rae’s Creek.

On each of those three holes, Rae’s Creek protects the entrance to each green. Being able to successfully avoid Rae’s Creek is a big key to winning the Masters.

Believe it or not, but there is a trend of other great golf holes in Georgia which are influenced by water. Many of these holes are actually part of the Georgia Golf Trail, which features 20+ golf courses in Georgia that range from the Lakes course at the Laura S. Walker State Park in Waycross in the south to the course at the Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa in Young Harris in the north.

The first water hole in Georgia can be found on the Lake View course at Callaway Gardens & Resort in Pine Mountain. At Lake View, you will enjoy playing the par-three 10th hole, which features a tee shot over water to an island green, which is accessible from a serpentine bridge. The 10th is a selfie ‘hot-spot.’ A birdie at the 10th is a memory maker.

is the par three 4th hole at The Creek at the Hard Labor State Park in Social Circle. The 4th is the Creek’s signature hole. Here, a water wheel, water fall and bridge are located on this hole.

Together, they form a backdrop that make it one of the most peaceful and picturesque settings for golf in Georgia.

4th hole at The Creek at the Hard Labor State Park ville. The 17th hole is a par-three. What makes this water hole so unique is actually the spectacular view of the nearby Chestatee River that you get from the 17th tee.

The fourth water hole of distinction can be found at The Oconee Course at the Reynolds Oconee in Greensboro.

The tee shot on the par three 5th hole requires focus because water lurks short and right of the green. At the 5th, it’s possible to get ‘up & down’ for par from left of the green or from either of the two greenside bunkers, but not from the bottom of the lake.

The fifth special water hole is the par four 9th hole at Achasta at Birch River in Dahlonega. Along the left side of this hole, you’ll see the Chestatee River, as it flows down the left side of this hole.

From the tee, don’t venture too far left.

To reach the green, you must cross the river. In order to physically step foot on the green, you must cross the river on one of five beautiful bridges. To have a birdie putt, you need a strong tee shot followed by a mid-iron to the green.

“The key to having great, memorable holes is the hard work and diligence of our golf course superintendents in Georgia,” said Doug Hollandsworth, founder, Georgia Golf Trail.

“I feel that you must have the ability to adapt to whatever Mother Nature throws at us is most crucial,” said Jeff Losee, superintendent, Chestatee Golf Club. “No spring, summer, fall, or winter in Georgia are ever exactly the same. The weather in Georgia can vary so greatly, from tropical storm systems from the Gulf (of Mexico) to extreme heat and drought conditions, sometimes within a month of each other.”

Where did you grow up?

Which group of people did you associate most with in high school? I literally loved everyone. It was never about a group or a class.

What is your favorite sport to play? Favorite to watch? Co-ed beach volleyball and tennis are my favorite sports to play. Favorite to watch? My Green Bay Packers. Followed by Blues Hockey and Cardinal Baseball.

Do you enjoy playing golf? Are there any golfers in your family? Yes! I love the game! My dad played in a men’s league for a while and my brother took up the sport as well. My son absolutely loves it and plays any chance he gets.

What do you feel makes this club special? Being a PGA Course and Home of the Valspar Championship definitely has its benefits! We are a “destination” location for people from all over the world! On any given day I can have guests from Holland, Wales, Ontario, New York and even IA. Imagine that! But I truly love seeing familiar faces on the course as well. Our members are AWESOME and “family” here at Innisbrook. Without either, we wouldn’t have a club.

What is your favorite part of being a cart girl? What is your least favorite part? I love creating the best possible experience on the course for our members and guests alike. It’s an absolute honor and privilege to be a part of the Innisbrook Family. I take great pride in what I do.

If you weren’t a cart girl, what would you be doing?

I do what I love and love what I do, but if I wasn’t a cart girl, I would be back on the course raising money for badly needed causes. Anything around golf and charity is my passion. I would be blessed if money didn’t matter and I could travel and do missions work as well.

What hobbies do you enjoy? I’m a beach girl at heart and live for my beach time and our Florida Gulf Coast Sunsets. I catch one any chance I get. A good hard bike ride is something I always enjoy! I also enjoy listening to live music on a patio somewhere on the water.

Favorite comedian? Sebastian Maniscalco Favorite charity to support? The Children’s Advocacy Center is near and dear to my heart, Blessings in a backpack, Loggerhead Marine Life Center, American Humane, American Cancer Society, Wounded Warrior Project, too many to mention. So many worthy causes that need our help.

What else would you like for us to know about you?

I’m a gemini J and the proud mother of 24 year old (boy/girl) twins. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, but I believe we should live our lives with an attitude of gratitude each and every day. Not only on Thanksgiving.

Valspar Championship Returns in March The Valspar Championship, one of the premier tournaments on the PGA TOUR, returns to the challenging Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor on March 16-22, 2020.

2018/2019 Champion Paul Casey will be attempting a tournament historic 3-peat, but he’ll need to defeat 143 other top PGA TOUR professionals first including Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson.

Improving the Lives of Military Veterans and Their Families Through Golf The Patriot Golf Foundation,

a non-profit headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona, will donate funds generated through its Patriot Golf Schools to charities and foundations that support military veterans and their families. Patriot Golf Schools will be hosted across the country and provide a giving platform for corporations and individuals as well as the opportunity to interact during the events with members of the military who served.

The Patriot Golf Schools are the vision of Seth Glasco, a respected golf instructor that was one of the original members of the Nicklaus-Flick Golf Schools. “In 2011, I had the opportunity to spend time with Lt Col Dan Rooney from the Folds of Honor Foundation and became a believer in his foundation and the need to help our military heroes and their families. Golf is proven to be extremely valuable as part of a veteran’s rehabilitation process. Whether it be physical, mental, emotional, or any combination, the game of golf goes a long way in improving these patriots’ lives,” states Glasco. The Patriot Golf School platform will not only raise valuable funds which will be donated to these great causes, but will also involve military veterans in each and every one of the schools and provide them with the tools in order to bring golf into their lives.

The Foundation is being led by Ted Simons, a former Nicklaus Academy executive. “When Seth approached me with this concept, I immediately saw the potential of how we can make a difference in so many veterans’ lives and for their families. At RSCGL, our mission statement is very easy to remember -- “We are in the happiness business.” The game of golf and the people who are involved in the game are very powerful, kind, giving, caring people and so much more. Your local club is doing so much more for the community than most will ever know. It is easy to do because it is the right thing to do. We think Seth Waugh is really on to something. Golf really is the engine for good. Supporting your local club really means that you are also supporting all the great causes and charities that your club supports. It is an extension, of sorts. Prior to her current role, Clark worked as a golf professional and director of instruction at Woods Hole Golf Club in Cape Cod and as a golf and teaching professional at Fiddlesticks Country Club in Fort Myers, Florida.

Clark’s support of the LPGA and its programming for 20 years is a big part of why she has gained this recognition.

She has served as an LPGA officer for over a decade, has worked on various committees and is a part of the Global Education Team. She has participated in championships and Pro-Am events with teams composed of members from the clubs she has served.

Clark received the Southeast Section’s 2019 Professional of the Year award, which qualified her to be considered for the National award. The LPGA Professional of the Year is selected by the membership’s Executive Committee from the pool of the section award winners and voted on by officers of six regional sections.

Great For Racing, But Better For Golf In life, there’s an old adage:

‘Great things happen in bunches of threes.’

That mantra definitely applies to beach lovers who also enjoy playing golf and watching motor sports. For golfers who like motor racing and are planning to visit Daytona Beach, Florida in 2020 to watch a car race or two, they should be prepared for beach walks, birdie putts, and bumper-to-bumper racing at the Daytona International Speedway.

Miles of hard-packed sand await all beach walkers to the ‘World’s Most Famous Beach.’ The three big car races on Daytona’s calendar for 2020 are the Rolex 24 at Daytona in January, Daytona 500 in February, and the Coke Zero Sugar 400 in August. And, golfers in Daytona Beach have access to three Florida Historic Golf Trail courses, too: the South Course at the Daytona Beach

As stimulating and exciting as the beach walks and car races may be, the golf along the Florida Historic Golf Trail will be the highlight of your visit to Daytona Beach for a number of reasons.

The par-71 South Course at the Daytona Beach Golf Club (www. daytonabeachgc.com; 386-671-3500) features three sets of tees that range from nearly 5,200 yards to just over 6,200 yards. The course follows

some of the original routing laid out by renowned golf course architect Donald Ross back in the early 1920s.

New Smyrna Golf Club - TODAY - Hole 2 - from Gary Wintz at NSGC The tee shots on the South Course can be very forgiving, but the approaches are somewhat demanding if players want to go pin-seeking.

A passing train is a common sight on the South course, since the 4th, 5th, and 6th holes are separated from the main golf course by the railroad tracks.

And, the 12th, 13th, and 14th holes are bordered on their right by those same tracks. The railroad tracks are clearly marked as being OB. FYI: Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Sam Snead and Jimmy Demaret played a challenge match on this course in 1946.

Demaret shot 64 to secure the win. The other three shot 67, 67 and 69, respectfully.

The Riviera Country Club (www.rivcc. com; 386-677-2464) in Ormond Beach was originally a nine-hole course in the 1930s, but later expanded to 18 holes in 1954. At Riviera, golf is treasured, celebrated and enjoyed every day of the year.

As the club’s brochure states, the Riviera Country Club has a “relaxed, comfortable atmosphere” which “welcomes golfers from around the world to enjoy.”

In 2014, all 18 greens were replaced.

Now, Riviera’s greens are in absolutely perfect condition – true, consistent, quick, smooth, and fair. And, there are as many as nine different pin positions on every green.

FYI: At Riviera, tee times are not required. Simply show up, pay and play.

Walking is allowed.

The New Smyrna Beach Golf Club (www.newsmyrnagolfclub.com; 386-4102693) measures from 4,700 yards to 6,500 yards and was completely renovated in 2006. In 2016, all the greens were replaced with platinum paspalum grass and the bunkers were softened. The greens were also enlarged to give more pin positions.

under 500 yards long. Water comes into play on eight holes. The signature hole is the 2nd hole – a medium-length par four which features a lake to the left and out-of-bounds to the right.

Golf Heritage Society Expands Mission, Membership

The Golf Heritage Society

has changed its name, has elected new leadership and is broadening its reach throughout the greater golf community. The nonprofit entity, formerly known as the Golf Collectors Society, is inviting everyone who is passionate about golf to join the newly-expanded global organization.

At its recent annual meeting, Dr. Bern Bernacki of Pittsburgh, Pa., was elected president of the Golf Heritage Society (GHS) and Rob Rendely of Olney, Md., was elected vice president. Each will serve a two-year term.

“We welcome everyone who loves the game,” said Bernacki. “Our mission

is to honor and preserve golf’s traditions and history – past, present and future.”

While golf collectors remain a vibrant segment of the GHS, increasingly diverse golf interests are included in its expanding membership: players of all ages, golf historians, hickory golf enthusiasts and golf course designers, as well as artists and writers. With about 860 members from 15 countries, the GHS embraces its expanding role in golf and welcomes all new members.

Northern Ireland –Kingdom For Golfers There are times these days that the small, usually deserted, coastal roads along the majestic Northern Ireland Antrim Coast seem to more resemble the Los Angeles Freeway due to not only the success of last year’s Open Championship with golfers but the hordes of global Game of Thrones enthusiasts visiting the many locales used in the filming of the iconic series.

However, only a short half hours’ drive away, from either Portrush or Belfast, is an oasis of peace and tranquility, and one of my favorite hotels to tuck in anywhere – Galgorm Spa & Golf Resort in Ballymene. Situated on the banks of the River Maine, the resort is set amongst 163 acres of magnificent parkland and gardens. The rooms are luxuriously appointed, and the amenities original and sublime throughout the property. The halls, public spaces and gardens feature an extensive collection of original artwork and sculptures to suit every taste.

Along with traditional spa services, there is the Thermal Village with riverside hot tub cabins, a snow cabin, Celtic Sauna Infusion, indoor and outdoor heated pools and so much more.

You won’t go hungry with a varied selection of dining outlets both at the main hotel and their nearby Galgorm Golf Club located at Galgorm Castle. Be sure and try the daily gin sampling at 48

On the golf side, Royal Portrush and Royal County Down need no introduction; they have deservedly risen to the very pinnacle of links golf and have the pricy green fees and limited visitor tee times to go along with their fame. In fact, if you want to play either of these iconic links in 2021 you had best have secured a precious tee time no later than March of 2020 or before.

Not to worry there is an abundance

of great and reasonably priced golf in the area to satisfy the most avid of links aficionados.

Starting with the Valley Course at Royal Portrush. Designed by Harry Colt, as is the Championship Course there, it is home to the Royal Portrush Ladies Branch and also Graeme McDowell’s home club, Rathmore. Don’t let the fact that the green fee is a fourth of its famous neighbor, the Valley Course is every bit a challenge to even the lowest handicaps.

Castlerock’s Mussenden Championship course offers a visual delight as it plays along the linksland.

Just on the other side of Portrush on the way to Portstewart is the charming Par 3 course – Ballyreagh. It will definitely assist in honing your short game in the wind and offers some of the most dramatic and stunning views in golf. Not to mention it won’t break your travel budget.

Portstewart GC with its three distinctive links – The Strand, The Old Course and The Riverside is a local favorite offering something for every level of golfer. The famous championship Strand Course’s opening hole is like something from another world as it plays out amidst towering dunes.

Continuing west, just along the coast is Castlerock with 27 holes of classic linkland with the 18-hole Mussenden course and the 9-hole Bann course.

Again, don’t make the mistake of thinking anything less than 7,000 yards isn’t a challenge –on the Mussenden links if the ever-present winds don’t pose enough of a distraction, the mesmerizing views will.

Heading east from Portrush, past the famous the ruins of Dunluce Castle, Bushmills Distillery, the Giant’s Causeway and the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, not to mention numerous Game of Thrones locales, is the town of Ballycastle. Renowned for its seafood and as the gateway to Rathlin Island it is also the setting for Ballycastle GC. Ballycastle GC has a split personality playing 5 holes on relatively benign flat parkland around the ruins of Bonamargy Friary before crossing back across the road for an exhilarating 13 holes of Golf Central • Volume 20, Issue 9

JAGA News & Notes January 2020 Top fields are expected for the First Coast Amateur for men and the Clay County Women’s Invitational.

The men will play at The Conservatory in Palm Coast and the women will be at Eagle Harbor. A strong collegiate contingent is expected for both as the dates are over the Martin Luther King weekend.

The First Coast already has a waiting list of over 30 players despite the field being enlarged to 96 players. Entries for the inaugural women’s event are still open.

Four juniors will receive entires thanks to the North Florida Junior Foundation golf tour. On Jan. 2-3, the First Coast Junior Amateur will be played at Jax Beach and the two two boys and top two girls will get fully-paid exemptions in the events.

Two boys will also receive a fully paid exemption into the Palatka Junior Azalea and the female winner will get a fully paid exemption into the South Atlantic Amateur in Ormond Beach.

Meetings JAGA opens the year with a Jan. 8 ,meeting at Timuquana.

Election of 2020 officers will be on the agenda.

The Northern Chapter of the North Florida PGA meets at Timuquana the following day.

Auric Zuberhour, the head pro and Slammer, is now over both courses and he and Seth Henrich, the Director of Golf, alternate coming to each course during a normal week.

When we tell people, we are going on a cruise, their first question is, “Where ya going?” To me it doesn’t matter!

When I step on a ship, I am on “Cruise Control.” They go where they go, and we are just along for the ride. Peace and quiet (to some degree), refreshed and ready to adventure when we get to the next stop.

Okay… when I say it doesn’t matter, it really does. We looked at the itinerary and what is on that island. This cruise was selected for the 3 islands stops, one island I had played golf on before, so there was a new adventure waiting Beverly and I when reached the other 2.

First Stop – Nassau in the Bahamas It was off the ship as soon as we docked and off to “The Ocean Club” on Paradise Island. Quickest, easiest way is to just get a taxi (make sure you know the costs of getting there and don’t hesitate to make an offer of what you are willing to pay). Twenty minutes later we were at the entrance to the club and ready to play. The Ocean Club is a Country Club on Paradise Island that is owned by the Atlantis Hotel. People who stay at Atlantis and the FourSeasons Resort on Paradise Island have Reniko Rolle claimed to be the best Starter on the Island with Beverly Wise

18th-hole Ocean Club on Paradise Island full access to the golf course during their stay. But occasionally, depending on the volume of play and the season, the Director of Golf mentioned that you may be able to play the course if there are times available coming off the ship.

This championship golf course designed by Tom Weiskopf offers every element for the perfect golf game and is one to add to your bucket list. You’ll head back to the ship thinking how a crosswind can be there on every hole. I would think… something must be down wind.

This 18-hole, par-72 course spans 7,100 yard and is truly surrounded by water. With the Atlantic Ocean to the North and the Nassau Harbour to the South and East… you’ll have to contend with the crosswinds and creative bunkers all day long.

Second Island – Dominican Republic Our sites were set on “Playa Dorada” in Puerto Plata. After docking in Amber Cove, we were off for a 30-minute ride through the island.

Use the bail-out area to the right side of the fairway and you have a very difficult approach to the green that is tucked in very tightly to the water edge on the left.

Okay… that doesn’t sound so difficult, but the green is only 25-feet wide and wraps around the lake edge.

Were we ever surprised! Talking to the locals, Hurricanes Irma and Maria had together destroyed the golf course in 2017, and it has never been rebuilt. We walked the property and found a number of the tee box location and even found one of the greens with the flag stick laying on the ground.

There has recently been some talk about the re-creation of the golf course.

Wouldn’t it be cool to help in their effort? I can read the headline now… “Turf Heads Unite to rebuild Tropical Island Golf Course.” As people that love living the TURF LIFE… why not share the need.

I know we could share some equipment, expertise, and humanitarian support with them. There is a Rotary International Club on Grand Turk. Rotary International is “Service Above Self” and well… I think we can ALL help do this.

There are 1,500 children in their school system and how important would that be to make a difference in a young person through golf.

All I took is my golf shoes and your favorite golf balls. All these courses have quality brand clubs to use. Leave the troubled sticks behind this time. You’ll be much happier.

Dinner at a “Set Time” or “Anytime” That is where we learned the difference. Maybe it was just us… but Anytime setting took forever, where setting at a certain time each day is the way we will do it from now on.

SunnilandSUPERSpotlight: Glen Thompson My Mom and Dad moved my younger brother and I from Louisville, Kentucky to Orlando, Florida in November of 1980. It was scary being the 7th grade kid that wore flannel and talked funny.

At 14 I got my start in the golf business picking up range balls with my brother and the neighborhood kids (Casselberry Golf Club) for free golf. I worked there until I was about 19 and I started on the maintenance crew as soon as I turned 18. After high school I had a couple of years of pre-engineering which didn’t fit me. I left Casselberry and was a spray tech in the Orlando area for 3 years before attending Lake City Community College. I graduated from the Golf Course Operations program in 1995. The running joke was that it took me 8 years to get a 3-year degree but I met a lot of great people.

Being a bit of a night owl, I earned the nickname Possum for looking dead in the mornings.

Before I started in sales in 1999, I worked for some great people at some great clubs. Grand Cypress (Tom Alex), Debary Plantation (Lou Dolan), Alaqua and Long Cove Club (Steve Wright), Callawassee Island Club (Dave DeGeorge), Eastlake Woodlands (Steve Hritsko) .

These gentlemen helped me understand what good was.

In 1999 my first sales job was for Ralph Brannin at Coastal Equipment (John Deere). I’m the reason he has no hair. The sales training I received from John Deere was second to none, but my heart was always in Plant Nutrition.

Over the past 20 years I have managed the central Florida territory for Todd Ronske (UHS), helped start Independent Turf Partners managing the central Florida territory (Roger Welker, Fred Marshall and Wilson Randolph), covered Virginia to Florida as a manufacturers rep for Performance Nutrition (Don Pucillo), managed eight sales reps for Golf Ventures in Florida and the Caribbean (Ron Jackson), manufacturers rep for Comand (Darren Midlane, Ryan McMeekin, Shane Donnelly) and now I’m the product development manager for Sunniland Corp.

Mr. Tom Moore, Billy Griffith and I have had a good relationship over the past 20 years. I brokered Sunniland Fertilizer in the early 2000’s with ITP, represented Sunniland as sales manager of Golf Ventures and now I’m a 60

Sunniland employee. The addition of a liquid plant and the quality of granular fertilizer that is produced from the fertilizer plant made it a great fit for me.

A partnership between AI and United Airlines’ Eco-Skies program, the Raptor Relocation Network is designed to protect raptors trapped at airports – including hawks, ospreys and owls – by relocating them to safe, healthy and more suitable habitat on golf courses within the ACSP. The raptors are being relocated for safety reasons, including bird strikes.

The Piper course opened in November of 2019 to much fanfare, just like the Commander Course. Arnold Palmer design team along with Lennar homes did a splendid job coordinating The Piper to give the community a different playing golf course. The Piper doesn’t have near the undulations the Commander possesses on the fairways and greens, however there are tighter tee shots to the fairways and smaller greens that make shot making a premium. The Commander has large deep faced bunkers with greenside bunker shots 7 feet or higher up to the green surfaces, whereas the Piper bunkers may be shallower, but are more numerous and protect a lot of the greens.
