Luxury and Legacy

create Legendary Golf at French Lick

Surrounded by the natural beauty

of the Hoosier National Forest, French Lick Resort appears to the human eye a paradisiacal mirage of Indiana’s opulent history. Healing mineral waters first attracted visitors to the stretch that has evolved into French Lick Resort, an unequivocal testament to man’s long-sought balance of nature and luxury. The lush gardens and historic atrium of the West Baden Springs Hotel preserve that enchanting promise of sanctuary, rejuvenation, and rhythmic tranquility, shared across three resort hotels, each distinctly catering to modern and timeless indulgence. After a $600 million restoration and casino development project, 757 luxury guest rooms and suites are furnished works of art, available between the French Lick Springs Hotel, West Baden Springs Hotel and Valley Tower Hotel. In the middle of it all, French Lick Casino offers thrilling gaming experiences in a sophisticated atmosphere. Contrasting the vivacity, two onsite spas reminisce the healing properties that invited the droves of the past. Meeting and event space totals an impressive 169,000 square feet, offering an enchanting backdrop

10

for gatherings of any scale and welcoming guests into the heart of the resort’s legacy of sophistication and warm hospitality. Three pristine golf courses unfold across the landscape, each delivering a unique experience. The Donald Ross Course at French Lick echoes the architectural brilliance of its renowned designer. First opened in 1917, this

historic course mirrors the timetested charm of the estate with undulating fairways, showcasing classic design elements, 80 deepfaced bunkers, and contouring greens, transporting patrons back in time with each swing. Even with the restoration, the course’s heritage as the 1924 PGA Championship venue has been honored and beautifully preserved.

With families and green golfers in mind, everyone can enjoy the walkable nine holes of the Valley Links Course. Bordered by native vegetation, Valley Links is a chance to revel in the simple joys of the game. Whether you’re a novice golfer or a seasoned pro, Valley Links is a picturesque round that invites every generation to fall for the game. Playing to the strength of Mount Airie’s elevation, The Pete Dye Course at French Lick gives players unequivocally stunning views. Void of commercial development, standing atop the drama of expertly carved mountainous terrain, and with breathtaking panorama, the course stands apart from any links this continent has to offer. It’s no surprise The Pete Dye Course has been tapped to host the Korn Ferry Tour Championship presented by United Leasing & Finance for the next five years. “We have hosted scores of championship golf events in the last 13 years, and partnering with the Korn Ferry Tour brings us to the next level of championship golf. Without fail, The Pete Dye Course stands its own against even the greatest players,” says Dave Harner, French Lick Resort’s Director of Golf. French Lick’s profile is also

Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 10

growing thanks to a 2024 collaboration with PGA Tour pro Adam Schenk. A familiar face at the resort’s courses, Schenk is proudly sporting the French Lick logo as he competes on the biggest stages in golf this season. After a stellar 2023 season, Schenk finished 9th in the PGA TOUR’s FedExCup standings, securing his entry into all major events of 2024. “Adam grew up playing junior golf and kids’ tournaments on our courses. Many of us around here have watched him play golf from the time he was a junior golfer on up through college, and now on to the PGA TOUR,” Harner noted. “We’re thrilled to partner with him, and he’s a great fit – Adam’s a family guy; we’re a family resort. We look forward to watching

him compete on the PGA TOUR representing French Lick Resort.” To experience French Lick Resort’s courses for yourself, a new offering for 2024 is the Package to Dye Four — four rounds and 72 holes on The Pete Dye Course, perfect for those who can’t get enough of this Dye gem. Or, opt for the Hall of Fame Package and go old school/new school with rounds at both the Ross and Dye. Whichever way you decide to tackle French Lick’s championship courses, you can’t go wrong. Around here, the fusion of luxury and legacy is time-tested and unforgettable.

cart girl

Where did you grow up? I was born and raised in Lakeland, Florida Which group of people did you associate most with in high school? Growing up I was a soccer player, but when I became a cart girl I quickly got the golf bug and fell in love with the sport. I used to play every day of my life; I never left the course. I would work and then play. I had to sacrifice my time and love for the sport when I began my career in the Health & Wellness Industry. What do you feel makes this club special? Southern Dunes is by far my favorite course and it has a special small town family oriented atmosphere that I have ever experienced. The owners are incredible people and Kevin Woodard is hands down the kindest head pro I have ever worked with. I feel like I go to work with my family everyday and that is an amazing feeling. What is your favorite part of being a cart girl? What is your least favorite part? My favorite part about being a cart girl are the people I get to meet and being outdoors all day! I love helping people and making them smile and have an amazing day. My least favorite part about being a cart girl is the constant fast pace of play all day! And making sure everyone is taken care of and I don’t miss anyone. Probably a personal perfectionist problem!!!! Also, the summer Florida heat is not easy nor the most fun! If you weren’t a cart girl, what would you be doing? When I am not working on the course I am working from home as a Life & Wellness Coach. I specialize in Endometriosis and Women’s Health & Hormones. I am the CEO of Stephanie Elaine Coaching, founder and creator of Anti-Inflammation Transformation Program, owner of Kingdom Aligned Wellness Ministry. I help women struggling in pain with the symptoms of Endometriosis and design a personal plan for them to take their health and life back. I have also recently started working with men who are struggling with weight-loss. Do you think the cart girls should be able to dress differently? How you prefer dress if you were given a choice? I believe cart girls should always dress according to their personality type but I always like to keep it chic & classy! I also have zero shame wearing a faux fur or Michael Kors down coat when it’s freezing! What hobbies do you enjoy? My favorite hobbies are working out, reading personal or spiritual growth books, and eating amazing food! Favorite comedian? Anjelah Johnson What is your idea of “the perfect date”? An amazing foodie dinner and dancing or doing something active and fun after. Unless it’s a lazy takeout date night! Favorite charity to support? My favorite charity is Kingdom Aligned Wellness Ministry on my site at Stephelaine.com. I formed this ministry to help women with Endometriosis with their daily life expenses. Food, gas, rent, hotel for surgery, surgery expenses, etc.

The Bear's Club

Golf’s not so hidden secret – Palm Beach, Florida By Jason Becker, PGA

There is a reason why many of golf’s greats live in Southeast Florida. Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson are just a few of the dozens who call their home in Palm Beach County. Yes, the weather is nice, and you really can’t beat the tax situation, but for golf enthusiasts who are in search of their ideal lifestyle, Southeast Florida is top of the list. At Golf Life Navigators, we have helped 45,000 golfers zero in on their ideal golf club and community since 2017. From California to Florida, across 86 golf-rich markets, Palm Beach is the Top-5 location most desired by golfers eyeing a snow-bird lifestyle. There are well over 150 clubs to choose from, and they run the gambit from amenities offered, cultures to consider, home design and price-points. But most Palm Beach clubs are at capacity with waitlists in place for want-tobe new members and the real estate options are slim pickens’ as well. So, we thought we would try and gain some intel from the front lines with one of golf’s top real estate agents in Palm Beach County,

20

Brian Coffey

Brian Coffey. Brian is a well-known golfer in the area and has intel on about any club desired by his clients. He was gracious enough to provide our readers with the latest intel and advice ahead or their possible Southeast Florida move. Q: Brian, you are an avid golfer and private club member. Can you give us a sense of the current marketplace for a private golf membership at a club in Palm Beach County? Is the demand still as high as ever? Yes, I am a three-handicap golfer and play mainly in Jupiter, Florida which is on the northern end of Palm Beach County. The private golf membership market continues to remain in high demand and nearly every club is either at a waitlist or close to one. There are a couple of tricks or solutions if you don’t want to wait for a club with a lengthy waitlist. One tactic to gain an immediate golf membership is to purchase a home in a gated club community such as The Club at Ibis, Loxahatchee Club, Admirals Cove, Frenchman’s Creek, etc. Many of these communities have the golf Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 10

membership attached to the home so buyers can jump the waitlist if they acquire one of these properties. The caveat is that they go fast, buyers must be ready to act when one comes on the market. Q: What is the market looking like these days for a home in a gated golf community? The market remains surprisingly strong, and prices have held. Southeast Florida is a very desirable area for several reasons but for golfers, they are still coming here by the thousands each year in search of a golf membership. The inventory for golf homes remains low as well. New construction and homes that are completely renovated are the most desired by my clients as they just want to come into their new home and play golf. From my optics, pricing on these homes have dropped slightly, but nothing significant. Many buyers are waiting for the market to make a sizable correction, but I do not see that happening in Palm Beach County any time to soon.

Q: We’re sure you get asked this question all the time, what are your Top-5 tracks in Palm Beach to play? Let’s just put real estate aside and talk pure golf experience. Yes, I do get that question a lot as I have been fortunate to play most of the courses in Southeast Florida. Here are my Top-5 but keep in mind, these all have lengthy waitlists or are invitation only. Most folks can’t just get on the course to play, they need to wait patiently for that invitation from a buddy or friend-of-a-friend. #5 – The Loxahatchee Club. A Nicklaus masterpiece in Jupiter, Florida. I love playing this track because everything about it is just relaxed and casual. Great membership of people. #4 – Jupiter Hills. Thirty-six holes of pure beauty in Martin County which is just north of Palm Beach Gardens. Every hole has character and undulation. Fantastic club! #3 – McArthur Golf Club. Brilliant Fazio design in Hobe Sound. 18 holes of great golf. You’ll

likely see a tour player or two out there during your round. #2 – The Bear’s Club. Enough said! Jack and Barbara’s club that was opened in 1999 in Jupiter. If you are looking for a pure golf lifestyle (including real estate), The Bear’s Club is the cream of the crop! #1 – Seminole Golf Club. Yeah, it is a special place. Mentioned in the same breath has Augusta National and other truly exclusive golf experiences, this Donald Ross track was created in 1929. Seven thousand-plus yards of true golf heaven in Juno Beach. If you would like to connect with Brian and talk about your specific search for a club and/ or home in northern Palm Beach County, you can find him on GolfLifeNavigators.com. Just search “Golf Homes.” You will also find other expert golf agents in markets across the U.S. to connect with and get market updates. Enjoy the journey, you’ve earned it!

will undoubtingly have a lot of uncertainty as the continued departure of big-name stars and the contract negotiation between LIV Golf drives headlines. The PGA Tour - under the leadership of Commissioner Jay Monahan - came under scrutiny as the Saudi-backed PIP group continued its efforts to recruit more players to LIV Golf. The negotiations between the two parties continue to progress to create a common ground between both entities. The rumors of more players leaving got confirmation as Jon Rahm signed a record-breaking contract to be the face of the new golf league. The departure of Rahm came with scrutiny, but the Spaniard continues to stand firm on his belief in LIV Golf and vows more top players will be joining him. While the headlines in 2023 were filled with conflict and confusion, the 2024 season can expect much of the same with reports of players being unhappy while changes to the schedule will be a challenge for Monahan and the Tour. After the debacle of the 2023 Ryder Cup, the removal of Dell Match Play in Austin and new elevated events, the tour is banking on its superstars to carry the torch for

Indian Creek Golf Club the PGA Tour in the new year. The PGA Tour in 2024 does have positive things entering the season. The group of young and talented players such as Ludvig Aberg, Taylor Montgomery and Cam Young will “drive the bus” and create a base for compelling story lines and great golf. The biggest news of 2024 will be the progress of Tiger Woods back to competitive golf. Although admitting he will play a limited schedule to protect his body, any event with Tiger in the field continues to move the needle and will rival any efforts LIV will make to outshine the PGA Tour. The 2024 season will be among the most interesting, exciting and controversial in recent years. The inevitable merger of LIV Golf and the PGA Tour will carry most of the headlines but let us not overlook the core of this great sport and watch and support great play and emerging superstars! That is what the PGA Tour should bring us in 2024.

The LIPG Year in Review:

The Golf Transaction Market Remains Furnace-Burning Hot

The Leisure Investment Properties Group LLC continues

to lead a very hot golf transaction market. In 2023 the company facilitated over 30% of all tracked golf course sales with 20 18hole equivalents sold, totaling $93M. The company also has nearly $100M worth of assets scheduled to close in Q-1 of 2024. Some of the trophy assets brokered by the LIPG in 2023 include the Honours Golf portfolio in AL, the Venice FL portfolio consisting of Waterford Golf Club as well as Calusa Lakes, and the Pinewild Country Club of Pinehurst in NC. So, what is fueling the inferno that is golf real estate? It’s a confluence of events and market conditions. We’ve all heard about interest rates and how much

Craft Farms, Gulf Shores, AL more expensive they make it to own real estate. Commercial assets like apartments, office buildings and even golf courses provide a return on investment. While apartments are providing 5%-6% returns, golf courses are providing double-digit returns in the low to mid-teens. Investors won’t pay 7% interest to buy an

apartment returning 5%. That’s one reason golf is so attractive. Another item driving golf’s favor with investors is its popularity. Every CEO of a major golf ownership group is saying that they’ve never seen their respective businesses doing so well. Rounds, rates, memberships, and initiation fees are all up. Many

private clubs now have waiting lists and the growth-of- the-game initiatives that began in the mid2000s are starting to pay dividends. All of these things are contributing to golf courses becoming highly sought after investment vehicles. Here is the impressive array of assets sold by the LIPG in 2023: The Tanglewood Club, Kings Ridge Golf Club, Pinewild Country Club of Pinehurst, Crescent Oaks Golf Club,

Is “acting your age” overrated? Acting your age is completely overrated. Absolutely no need to be up tight and serious 24/7. Relax, enjoy life and don’t forget to live a little! What do you do for a living? I work for the PGA Tour as a microphone operator and a camera assistant. Occasionally pick up a shift at Charm City which was my first job. What would you like to do for a living? I’d love to play professional golf. If that doesn’t happen, I’d like to be a camera operator or a fiber tech. Aside from golf; what do you prefer for fun and relaxation? Apart from golf, which I play every day. I enjoy spending time with family, going to the beach, going out with friends and being adventurous. Also, finding places I’ve never been, such as the natural beauties of Florida. What golf apparel do you like to wear? Absolutely love to wear Rhone, Oakley, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Bahama, and GFore for the shoes. Best shoe in golf. Whom do you most admire for their inner and outer beauty? My mother. Tell us something about yourself that only your closest friends know? For my first flight with the PGA and solo flight in general. I had to fly to Connecticut for the Travelers Championship. Got to the airport 2 hours early as standard, then through TSA and went to my gate. The first flight at my gate was for New York, LaGuardia. Confused as to why my flight is now so early and how it got changed to LaGuardia. I stood in line for that flight for 20 minutes. As I’m about to scan my ticket, the lady scanning says “what’re you doing”. I realized then and felt a fool but it will never happen again.

Adam LaRoche

golf bachelor

Where were you born? Did you grow up there? I was born In Clearwater, Florida and moved over to Bartow when I was 6. Have lived in Bartow ever since. However, I am now moving back closer to “home”.

What three things would you need to survive on a deserted island? Full set of clubs with endless balls, chef, and a golf course. Who would you like to have with you on the same deserted island; and why? My buddy Cole, he can pretty much turn anything into something fun. What do you find to be the most annoying habit people demonstrate on the golf course? Someone not watching their golf shot then asking “do you know where my ball is?” or “did you see where it went?” What three people would you most like to play with in your fantasy golf foursome? Viktor Hovland, Arnold Palmer, and Seve Ballesteros. What are some of your great accomplishments? I started working at 15 and have bought cars, motorcycles, jet skis, hauling trailers, etc. I’ve started my own business, pressure washing and junk removal. Since the start I’ve bought everything with cash I’ve made over time. It’s always been a goal to buy myself anything I’ve ever wanted/needed and will continue to work for it, until I get it. Favorite comedian? Theo Von 28

Favorite television channel? Golf channel Last book you read? The Metabolic Maze by Mr. Joshua Bassett Favorite magazine? Golf Central Favorite charity to support? O.U.R Rescue What else would you like for us to know about you? I almost lost my life to a self-inflicted motorcycle accident resulting in a broken collar bone, torn meniscus and losing a lot of skin (I was wearing long sleeves, not gear unfortunately). With that being said, I’ve learned to take everything with a grain of salt. Nothing is ever as big as it seems, keep pushing and giving it your all. It will pay off in the end. Where were you born? Did you grow up there? I was born in Dunedin, FL and grew up nearby in New Port Richey, FL. I spent 8 years living in Orlando attending college at UCF. Majored in Sports & Exercise Science. Orlando is a second home to me with many of my friends still living there. What do you do for a living? I am a first-year elementary school music teacher, and an entrepreneur. I own Snowbird Living, a golf apparel company. My apparel is currently being sold in 10 local country club pro shops in Florida. I am launching my apparel to sell online this coming year on Amazon. Aside from golf; what do you prefer for fun and relaxation? I love to travel; it is a big part of who I am. I first started when I studied abroad in college. I spent 5 months residing in Florence, Italy and traveled around to 13 countries during that time. This past summer I spent all of July traveling around Europe again, primarily in Italy. I enjoy the European lifestyle and culture. As a teacher, I have the flexibility of summers off to travel. I also enjoy interior design and decorating. I once flipped a travel trailer, tearing out all the inside and remodeling it with a unique design. I lived in it for 6 months and then sold it for a profit. I have also transformed a screened in patio into a studio apartment. I love being creative and working on fun remodel projects. Of course, I also love going to the beach, working out, going out to dinner, seeing a show, bowling, dancing, etc. Relaxed evening at home, or nightclub and cocktails? Dinner and a Broadway show What golf apparel do you like to wear? I love wearing my own brand of golf apparel. I focused on making a great comfortable fit and stylish pattern. Steak, chicken, or seafood? Seafood Name the three most important things to you in this world. Loved ones, traveling, happiness. Favorite comedian? Amy Schumer and Kevin Hart Favorite television channel? HGTV, FX What else would you like for us to know about you? My goals are to build my apparel company as my primary income, and travel much, much more. I played competitive golf in high school, state qualifiers and undefeated conference champions. Together Again Two tours. One competition Story and Photos: Beverly and Greg Wise – Golf the Wise Way

Invitational, held in Naples, Florida at Tiburon Golf Club, has managed to turn golf history on its ear; and it only took 3 days in December to make it happen. Golf has seen individual attempts by trailblazing LPGA players like Babe Zaharias in 1954, to play on the PGA Tour. Followed by Michelle Wie West, Annika Sorenstam, and Britany Lincicome. This past October, Lexi Thompson became the seventh woman to tee it up on the PGA Tour, narrowly missing the cut by 3-shots after carding a 73 and 69 at the Shriners Children’s Open. For Grant Thornton - the mission was to recreate the past, make it stronger and bring the event in the present, and make this Invitation a viable piece of golf’s future with a total purse of $4 million, with the champions sharing $1 million. It has been nearly 25-years since there was a mixed-team at the JCPenney Classic, held at Innisbrook Resort. Notable superstars of LPGA and PGA Tours – Beth Daniels and Davis Love III winning the championship twice. “I was a fan of the format, growing up watching it on T.V.” Grant Thornton CEO Seth Siegel said.

“Seeing players from both tours coming together is an incredible thing for the game of golf, and I think we’re only going to see excitement around this event grow moving forward.” — Jessica Korda,

Grant Thornton Ambassador and LPGA player

The inaugural Grant Thornton

“The last time we had a mixed format like this was 1999. So, in the modern era of golf, this really is the first time,” he added. Grant Thornton views it as a natural evolution of their support of the sport and their ambassador squad includes notables like Nelly Korda and Rickie Fowler who are both playing in the event.

The Inaugural 54-hole event Round 1: Scramble Each player hits a tee shot and the team selects the ball to be used for the next stroke. From there, both players hit their next shots from that spot. This process continues until the ball is holed. Round 2: Foursomes (alternate shot) Each team’s players alternate hitting shots with the same ball until the ball is holed. One player will tee off on the odd-numbered holes, and the other tees off on the even-numbered holes. Round 3: Modified fourball Both players tee off, and then they switch balls for their second shots and play that same ball until it is holed. The lower score of the partners is then counted as the team score for the hole. Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 10

Listed below is a brief description of four of the category winners: Favorite Golf Course: At the Arrowhead Pointe Golf Course, golfers will discover a golf course situated on a peninsula within the Richard B. Russell State Park. Arrowhead Pointe deserves to be called the ‘Crown Jewel’ of The Georgia Golf Trail. Here, the water views are simply stunning -- with 10 of the 18 holes skirting Lake Richard B. Russell. The 14th, 15th, 16th, and 17th holes are perched on a strip of land that is surrounded by Lake Richard B. Russell on three sides. The degree of difficulty of those four holes is superseded by their joint magnitude of beauty. There are no lakefront homes at Arrowhead Pointe, which is consistent with the state park golf course theme of “no crowds, no houses, no noise.” Arrowhead Pointe was designed by Georgia native golf course architect Denis Griffiths.

Best Attraction: The Stone Mountain State Park, located east of Atlanta, is appealing to golfer and their families. Nestled in 3,200 acres of natural beauty, Stone Mountain Park features family-friendly attractions, outdoor recreational activities and a variety of on-site lodging options. You must go to the top of the actual Stone Mountain, which is the largest free-standing, above-ground granite creation in the world. The view is spectacular. Favorite City to Visit: Savannah is classy, charming, historical, diverse, and a true Southern destination. Dining in Savannah is an experience unto itself. It’s worth noting that one of the city’s finest restaurants – Huey’s On The River – won the Best Restaurant Award along The Georgia Golf Trail in 2021. Best Place to Live in a Golf Community: With access to pickleball, tennis, croquet, many hiking trails, and a scenic, firstclass, and well-maintained 18-hole golf course, there are many reasons why the Sky Valley Country Club in Sky Valley, Georgia is a popular year-round residential destination. “We are very excited about the continued growth of our 6th Annual Travel Awards,” said Doug Hollandsworth, Founder, The Georgia Golf Trail. “We are reaching thousands of people throughout the United States with our marketing and this year we had thousands of people submit a vote for their favorite golf courses and places to visit along The Georgia Golf Trail.” Hollandsworth says the key to the success of the Georgia Golf & Travel Awards is having the State of Georgia is a

strong marketing partner. “We are very proud to be working with the State of Georgia to help promote the many things there are to do here in Georgia,” added Hollandsworth. “Congratulations to all the winners. We appreciate all that you do for Georgia.”

Find Your Ideal Swing Rhode Island native invents swing trainer that helped him break 80!

N

owhere is it written that only highly skilled professionals and golf instructors have a monopoloy on devloping successful golf training aids. Brian Hennessey grew up in a competitive golf family who got tired of losing to his brothers even when getting strokes. Consistently shooting in the low 100s, Brian was driven to get better and had one goal in mind — to break 80. “I took some lessons, bought some training aids but nothing was giving me the results I wanted so I decided to try to build something on my own,” said Hennessey. “I’m happy to report that I now consistently break 80 and my brothers are now asking me for strokes... which I’m NOT giving,” laughed Hennessey. But that’s not the end of the

34

story. Realizing that there were countless golfers who experienced the same struggles that he had now overcome, Brian hit upon the idea of marketing his selfdesiged training tool to a market that he felt confident existed for something that could improve their game as well. What started out as an idea to improve his own long game evolved into Brian designing THE SWING FINDER, which will debut at the 2024 PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, FL January 24-26.

Patented, versatile, and adjustable, THE SWING FINDER is designed for players of all abilities. It can be used to improve all aspects of their game from driving to fairway metals, long irons, pitching, chipping and even putting. Golfers simply place their feet Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 10

into a comfortable stance when stepping into the device. The height and plane of the swing cage adjusts to capture any swing path. THE SWING FINDER’s “flaps” guide the club to the ideal position at the top of the swing. The space between the flaps can be adjusted to determine plane width for club entry and can be used for targeted swing positions such as adjusting flaps outside the hips to practice correct hip position throughout the swing. THE SWING FINDER is lightweight and durable as well as easy to set up, break-down, and carry. It is designed to assure correct and consistent practice – to have golfers see, feel, and know their ideal swing. “Too many training devices are clunky and not user friendly for daily, consistent practice,” said Hennessey. “I created THE SWING FINDER to be functional, intuitive, and effective. I was the lab rat,

Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 10

so to speak, and I am proof of its dramatic results.” THE SWING FINDER helps to fix common swing flaws such as improper head position, inconsistent tempo and swing plane, over the top downswing, clearing the hips, avoiding body sway, and more. It works

for right and left-handed players and can be used anywhere. Golfers get custom fitted for golf clubs and even golf balls. Why not get fitted for the most important aspect of your game, YOUR SWING! To find out more, go to www. theswingfinder.com.

brush-t

The award-winning high-performance brush-t with its proprietary Fast-Flex bristle design reduces resistance at impact, restores stolen velocity which allows the ball to travel the maximum distance. It also eliminates deflection to ensure greater accuracy. The brush-t base is inserted into the ground at the same height for ongoing consistency. Some think it provides an unfair advantage, but the brush-t conforms to the rules of the USGA and the Royal and Ancient Golf Society at St. Andrews. Independent testing on brush-t vs a wooden tee was performed in San Diego, California using the Iron Byron Swing Tester. The results proved that brush-t adds between 3.2 to 7 yards to driving distances and eliminates 2% deflection for enhanced accuracy as compared to a wooden tee. Three leading golf manufacturers’ equipment was used in the test and contributed to the distance variance. There are four brush-t models: 3 Wood - 2” / Driver 2.2” / Oversize - 2/4” / XLT - 3.1/8” All can be purchased at these golf specialty stores: Roger Dunn Golf Shops, Golf Galaxy, Dick’s Sporting Goods, or Edwin Watts, and online at or www.amazon.com.

Bringing Timacuan BACK! since opening in 1988, Timacuan had fallen into disrepair in recent years and was struggling to maintain day-to-day operations.

“I remember when Timacuan was the envy of golf course owners and managers all across Central Florida,” said White. “Well, we are going to return Timacuan to those glory days. We will restore this club to the prominent position it earned and occupied not that long ago.” The new ownership entity began upgrading the property immediately. The first step was to turn the semi-private club into a private facility, open to members and their guests. The club recently hired a membership sales executive Chad Habig, and the numbers are starting to pick up. “Everyone would like to have a full membership right away, but we understand that you can’t overcome years of neglect overnight,” said White. “Our goal is to create an experience for members that will be unmatched in the area, and to bring the golf course back to the condition that helped boost it to the high ranking it once held. As we do that, we believe the membership will grow. We want to make Club Timacuan one of the best clubs in the southeast.” It’s all a natural fit for White, who has been in the hospitality and service industry since graduating from the University of South Carolina School of Hospitality in the early 90’s. The South Carolina native and Tampa resident has a knack for rolling up his sleeves, getting to the root of problems, and developing solutions that deliver the kind of experience and success that his customers have been yearning for. It’s that kind of common

It’s a new day at Timacuan.

New ownership has a successful history of taking over distressed properties and restoring them to the level of quality that members and customers had come to expect. That’s what founder and managing partner Douglas White and his team had in mind when they took over operations at Timacuan Club in Lake Mary a little over a year ago. One of Florida’s most highly-regarded golf clubs 38

sense approach that has driven the company’s success, and he is confident it will lead to a return to glory for Club Timacuan. “Timacuan’s greatest days are in the forefront, and we are excited to be leading this transformation,” said White. The majority of the Timacuan membership is onboard with that, and keeping an eye on the ongoing changes at the club. “When they started they had so much work to do,” said Joe Kelly, a longtime member along with wife Mary Beth. “When you take on all the trouble and baggage they did, it’s hard to overcome. You just have to keep grinding away. If we keep heading in the right direction it is going to be exciting.” Kelly is particularly pleased with his participation in the Timacuan Men’s Golf Association, which conducts a variety of competitions on a monthly basis. “The TMGA is terrific,” he said. “Your golf game goes up and down, but your friendships with the other members are solid. And we

have a great group of members. “My wife and I are just happy to have a golf course in our community on which we can play together and have that in common.” Club Timacuan offers a variety of golf memberships, as well as memberships for those wishing to just take advantage of all the social offerings at the club. Each month brings an array of social activities: weekly trivia, happy hours with live music, men’s and women’s nights out, and much more. Plus, the club’s restaurant, Bistro 88, is open most nights for dinner.

Tip to Tail The restored

Sugar Mill Country Club course opens with overwhelming positive reactions to the final product. The total restoration project began back in April of 2022. The scope of the work. as they say in the aviation world was “Tip to tail”. Greens, Fairways, Tees, irrigation, bunkers, and impactful surroundings. Contracting the world-renowned Ron Garl and Ricky Nix Golf Course Design team to update the already

award-winning Joe Lee Design, the club’s mission to maintain the bones of the layout yet elevate it to compliment the modern-day game was more than accomplished. The 1st tee shots were played on Tuesday, November 21st. The positive outpouring from the members was overwhelming which made the trials and challenges all worth the time, effort, and inconveniences experienced by the members over the past 18 months. With this investment in the club, Sugar Mill has positioned itself for many years of prosperity. Membership levels have already begun to race to the “cap’ number. It also has been awarded the 2024 US Women’s Open Sectional Qualifier and is already in talks with the FSGA and NFPGA for some of the top tier tournaments to play host. 40

Marc Dull– 2023 Men's Amateur Champion

2024 Florida Amateur to Quail Valley, Women’s Amateur to The Bear’s Club Quail Valley Golf Club, in Vero

Beach, will be the host site for the 107th Amateur Championship, while The Bear’s Club, in Jupiter, will be the host for the 95th Women’s Amateur Championship. The Amateur Championship will be contested on June 6-9, 2024. Quail Valley Golf Club will host its second Amateur Championship, a decade after hosting it’s first in 2014, while the 107th Amateur will be the ninth FSGA championship contested at the Vero Beach Course. The Women’s Amateur Championship will be played on June 13-16, 2024. The Bear’s Club, which also hosted the 95th Amateur Championship, will

host its first Women’s Amateur. New for the 2024, the winner of the Florida Amateur and Florida Women’s Amateur will receive exemptions into the U.S. Amateur Championship and U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, as well as any other age eligible USGA Championships.

107th Amateur Championship

Quail Valley Golf Club is a collaboration between Tommy Fazio and Nick Price, and opened for play in 2002. Moving huge amounts of dirt, Fazio and Price turned the flat citrus groves into a hilly route with seven lakes, countless bunkers and many trees. With the Atlantic just six miles away, ocean winds are a constant

challenge at the Vero Beach course. Quail Valley Golf Club is set to host its second Amateur Championship and its first since 2014, where Gabriel Lench raised the trophy. The Vero Beach club will host its ninth FSGA championship and its first since the 2019 MidAmateur Championship. In addition to it’s rich Championship history with the FSGA, Quail Valley annually hosts the Quail Valley Intercollegiate every fall, featuring top teams from Florida & the Southeast, led by many State Amateur contenders. Bent Pine Golf Club is set to be the co-host for the 106th Amateur Championship for the first and second round. The 18hole championship layout was Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 10

Ocean. Opened in 1999, Nicklaus transformed the native environment into a championship layout that features numerous strategically placed bunkers, to protect the large green complexes and shape the numerous challenging dogleg holes. The design was inspired by the bunkers at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia, which Nicklaus visited when he captained the 1998 United States Presidents Cup team. The course recently went through an extensive renovation in 2023, opening to much praise by Mr. Nicklaus and the membership. The Bear’s Club is set to host its first Women’s Amateur Championship and its sixth FSGA championship The Jupiter course most recently played host to the 105th Amateur Championship in 2022. In addition to a first-time host for the 95th Women’s Amateur, the championship will also feature some key changes in 2024. Player exemptions will be used for the first time and two qualifiers will be held, making the Women’s Amateur the second women’s championship

in FSGA history to host qualifying for the championship. The championship will be shortened to four days and will have an 84-player field. There will be two rounds of stroke-play seeding, with a cut to the low 32 players and the Round of the 32 will be played immediately following the second stroke play seeding round. The Women’s Amateur Championship is the oldest and most prestigious event on the Women’s Championship schedule. Past Champions include the names of Alice Dye, Tammy Bowman, Cristie Kerr, Meghan Stasi, Taffy Brower and other notables. In 2023, Chloe Kovelesky captured the victory at the 94th Women’s Amateur Championship, becoming the youngest player ever to win the prestigious event. After earning the No. 1 seed, Kovelesky defeated Victoria Zheng, 4 and 3, in the championship match to win her second FSGA championship and her first Women’s Amateur title. Entries open for next year’s Amateur and Women’s Amateur Championship open early in 2024. 49

A Turf Pirate's Journal

$details, a new year, and hand made brooms$

Ireland brooms

Welcome to the new year Turf

Pirates! It is this time of year we often lament over difficulties or dream of the vast potential that lies ahead but it remains the universal truth that we all are moving forward and the more skillful we adjust our sails the calmer the seas become. I often spend January teaching or being taught in order to gain the insights needed to find success in this ever-changing industry of ours and true I have several things on the books for the month but as I was preparing a presentation, I ran across this month’s photo. The photo was taken on one of my international turf travels in Northern Ireland at Royal County Down an amazing golf course deep with traditions. The Greenkeepers were brushing in 54

top dressing sand with hand-made brooms! I had to stop and sweep a bit. In the years since, when I think about success and taking care of great golf courses, I am reminded that it often comes down to the details. The more we put in the more we get out, the deeper the focus the more obvious the craft becomes. I love golf in Ireland, England, and Scottland for many reasons, but one is the willingness to do the hand work. It takes longer but on true links courses it seems a great match. It is also a chance for young greenkeepers to connect to the old ways and for old greenkeepers to find a Zen moment. I feel blessed to have such memories and traditions but there is as always more to the story. The New Year is also the perfect time to sweep away literal and

mental debris that is keeping us from living our best lives. We should go beyond winter cleaning and servicing our shops and equipment. For example, think about the commitment required to hand make a broom for a specific task. It would need to be sturdy but flexible and of course durability is important. In the end it must get the job done and honor the tradition to which it is connected. There have been years where I did not need much of a broom to sweep up the debris (stress, mental clutter) from the previous year but there have been a few years where I needed a broom of epic standards and considerable time to complete the annual cleaning tasks. Turf Pirates know that it is best to keep the ship prepared at all times but before you leave safe harbor for the adventure that will be 2024 take a little extra time and take care of your personal details. Make a figurative broom that will be up to the task and sweep out the things in your life that are negative and feel the change that comes with that commitment. Be realistic, it may take time to sweep the whole barn but get at it and see the job is done well. Be sure to empty the dustpan properly so you don’t just move trash around. Oh, I almost forgot to mention that it should be fun! I know I lost a few poser pirates on this one, but we grow people and grass for a living and that is amazing, and it should be fun and when it stops being fun we should immediately find the Joy again and make the changes that are necessary. There will be a lot of things to deal with this year, some good and some bad, but in the Ancient and Honorable Tribe of Turf Pirates we hold that all these things work together for our greater good. Hold fast Turf Pirates may you wield a mighty broom in 2024 and may prosperity, clarity and tranquility surround all your efforts. Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 10

Lords Valley Takes Stewardship Seriously With six decades as the

centerpiece of a close-knit bedroom community under its belt, Northeast Pennsylvania’s Lords Valley Country Club (LVCC) passed several worthy mileposts over the past couple years, including a long and impressive history as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary course. Certified since 1996, some

56

three years after Superintendent Christopher Passenti started working there, it was due for some recognition — including a site visit by an Audubon International representative, just to refresh them on what he and his crew have been up to. The New Jersey native and graduate of Penn State’s Turf Grass program reached out to Scott Turner, Audubon International’s Environmental Program Manager.

“I called Scott because the golf course had been recertified a couple years ago, and I wanted Audubon to come and see our facility and the practices that we have put into place,” Passenti said. Perhaps one big reason LVCC continues to thrive as other “old line” private clubs struggle or disappear is that, as environmental concerns across the United States—and the ongoing effects of climate change—continue to challenge all kinds of businesses, sustainability in golf definitely breeds longevity, both in terms of membership continuity and financial benefit. Passenti figured it was time for this secluded, historysteeped enclave to get its due for decades of dedication to doing the right thing for the land, and for the flora and fauna that share it with golfers and members in general. “We are extremely concerned with our environmental footprint, so we do everything in our power to ensure that day-today pest and turf management practices are effective. That Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 10

include watching weather patterns, which may affect the overall golf course, as well as all ensuring all equipment are up to date.” Passenti and LVCC aren’t alone when it comes to some local community members misunderstanding how Audubon Certified courses actively and intentionally help the environment, not harm it. It’s long been a source of frustration for many committed, hard-working, nature-loving superintendents. So welcoming Turner to this special place that’s only two hours from New York City and Philadelphia, including a mix of retired residential members as well as newer commuter culture members, was a big deal. “Scott’s visit to the course was another way to highlight the areas in which Lords Valley Country Club was working within the surrounding environment,” he says. “No shortcuts were taken. Big rewards are achieved even with a small budget.” The list of sustainable practices throughout LVCC’s 145-acre golf course –approximately 80 of which are maintained and “in play”–is long and impressive, starting with careful

Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 10

attention to keeping its ponds and lakes as pristine as possible. “We have some of the cleanest water in the area,” Passenti says. “We have a 30-foot no-spray, no-fertilize border around our lakes, and take pride in that, and we monitor irrigation cycles to make sure we’re getting the most out of our watering.” Passenti also mentions the intense weather swings he’s seen in the region recently, particularly in rainfall amounts—a familiar refrain from Maine to Florida. “For example, we are seeing more torrential downpours that yield one inch of rain, and rapid temperature changes which affect the overall health of the turf (bentgrass greens and fairways, with Poa annua). We try to stay well ahead of play by starting our applications at 4 a.m. to ensure all chemicals are dry.” Beyond the fertilized areas, native plants are treated with a careful hand, as well, to allow a wealth of wildlife to flourish including fox, bear, deer, and turkey. Passenti had some significant square footage set aside for Monarch butterfly habitat, letting crucial milkweed take hold well away from in-play corridors. “It also attracts bees,” he adds, “and it’s

well out of the way so it doesn’t get trampled. We have some members who were really excited about it.” Audubon International’s Turner echoes that excitement and appreciates LVCC’s longtime commitment to stewardship. “My site visit to the property really brought into focus the special dedication Chris and his crew give their jobs every day, every year. Their turf management, irrigation and chemical application management practices are second to none in terms of caring for flora and fauna and achieving that delicate balance with nature at every step, with intense planning, in sometimes challenging climate conditions. Nothing is left to chance.” Passenti agrees. “People forget that. They just think we do whatever we want to do. That’s not the case. I was taught to think about what you are doing, and how it may impact your environment, before you do it. “I take pride in not only my work, but also mentor my employees instilling the importance of their environmental impact, as well as taking pride in the work that they do on a daily basis. This is a great place to live and work.”

Woerner Farms’ Commitment to Turfgrass, Growth and Excellence

The name Woerner resonates

within the southeastern United States turfgrass industry, rooted across generations. George Woerner’s grandfather who migrated from Germany to Alabama laid the groundwork for their agricultural lineage. Through various agricultural pursuits – produce, cattle and crop farming – the family ventured into turfgrass in 1978 by planting 20 acres of St. Augustine and centipede grass. The Woerners grew produce until 1987, when they lost over 2,000 acres due to heavy rains. For the next five years, they focused primarily on turfgrass production to revitalize their business. George fondly recalls how his mother, Lillie, after raising eight children, established a successful sod outlet in Pensacola, FL, surpassing the combined earnings of all the Woerner boys. “She showed us the path to success in the turfgrass business,” George remarked, “which led us to expand to close to 20,000 acres of turfgrass around the country.” Transitioning to the next generation, George’s son, Allen, grew up in the farming scene of an agricultural family in a small town called Elberta, in the heart of South Alabama. This original farm owned by the Woerners later expanded to all the seed and production operations they own throughout the United States. Allen’s journey began with summers and breaks spent cultivating the farm, and he graduated in Geography from Auburn University in 2006. His initiation into the family business was serendipitous—responding to his father’s call to GPS fields in Donaldsonville, LA, which quickly escalated into hands-on involvement in farming operations. “This proceeded to start my career as a production manager living

58

Christian, Graham and Mark at TPI 2023 in Nashville, TN on the road helping the family grow our family business and turfgrass footprint,” he explained. During his early career, Allen navigated between hotel rooms across Louisiana and Florida while nurturing and expanding the Woerner owned brand. Allen explained that the Great Recession forced them to think outside the box and make rapid changes to their business model. He recalled the necessity to auction, sell and reduce inventory, even reintegrating into produce farming to stabilize finances. In 2012, Allen became a 25% shareholder partner of jointly owned Woerner operations at that time, marking a significant milestone in the family’s business journey. Allen remarked on the family’s evolution, “We worked hard and survived. As the family continued to grow and develop, we realized that different families had different dreams and aspirations.” This realization led to a strategic decision in 2017 to allow families to pursue separate growth opportunities, resulting in divided assets and

George emerging as Woerner Farms, LLC along with Allen, with operations spanning multiple locations across the country.

Shifting to Proprietary Turfgrasses

The company’s focus shifted toward continued growth and enhancing grass varieties to adapt to evolving industry trends. “We started to diversify our model from commodity grasses at the time to more of these specialty branded grasses that offered better environmental attributes, ultimately for the producer and the end-user,” Allen said. George explained it was pivotal for them to switch from commodity grasses to proprietary ones following the housing crash. He began to rely heavily on his son to scout new turfgrasses, ensuring their suitability before production. “Through rapid expansion and growth, we continue to acquire more agricultural land and retail locations to expand our business model and have doubled our size since 2017. We actually have a much larger Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 10

company in both revenue and profits and land holdings today than we had in 2017 when my father and I emerged and restarted.” He said the entire team had the approach to go for it and never looked back. Their growth and pursuit to expand their footprint developed Woerner Farms, LLC into a totally different company servicing its customers with better grasses while still following its roots of being in the agricultural field.

New Varieties

Now, George said they focus on finding drought-tolerant and disease-resistant grasses. “Overall, we’ve made a lot of good decisions, and we’re in a lot of good marketplaces. In our area, there’s more competition and people in the turfgrass business in lower Alabama than any other place. We try to be totally differentiated and focus on building a brand rather than just moving a lot of product.” “It appears our family brand grass, Classic St. Augustine, is taking second seat to these newer varieties coming on from the University of Florida, Sod Solutions and other turfgrass agencies and licensing companies,” Allen shared. George extracted Classic as a new variety during a freeze in the 1980s from a St. Augustine that had survived a really cold winter. “Due to the genetic improvements and developments in these grasses now produced by these universities, they’re superior to these older varieties. And so now we find ourselves moving away from some of the foundation items that built Woerner up in the grass business and now we’re focused on sustainable grasses,” Allen said. He defined sustainable grasses to mean less inputs, less water consumption and overall, more grower and enduser friendly and quality turfgrass versus what was commercially available on the market. Allen worked in grass production and farm development before becoming a managing partner. Now, he is on the administrative side, heavily focused on expanding agriculture holdings and operating the business to acquire real estate and natural resources. He explained that in the past, they could focus solely on planting and growing grass, whereas now, Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 10

a lot of time is dedicated to the challenges of accessing water or applying for permits. They also drill irrigation wells and put up many new center pivots to develop a good farm model for the future. As a part of the venture into new grasses, he hired Graham Simmons in 2018. Simmons worked for his own father’s sod farm when he got out of college. Now, after working as an assistant farm manager and regional production manager in Florida for Woerner Farms, he oversees all the southeast operations as the director of turfgrass operations.

Cobalt St. Augustine: A Beacon of Change

Simmons explained they follow National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP) trials and sites across Alabama, Florida, Texas and the Carolinas to determine which varieties to grow. After getting the grass from a breeder or licensing company, they’ll plant small plots to monitor how it handles various conditions such as drought, winter color, disease and insects at different farm locations. Most recently, Woerner attained a license for Cobalt™ St. Augustinegrass after following this process. Simmons noted that Cobalt has held good winter color through temperatures in the low 20s, which are unusual for South Alabama. They’ve also observed fewer disease problems in Cobalt, particularly grey leaf spot. “Color and disease are the best (qualities), and we’re also seeing a little bit faster growth. We expanded from our foundation block and have 11 acres at our Clarksville farm and 11 acres at our Bon Secour farm. Our farm managers there both like it,” he said. He looks forward to observing how Cobalt’s color holds up this winter. Most recently, they expanded Cobalt to their farm in Bronson, FL, planting close to 20 acres. Allen shared his insight on Cobalt, saying it could potentially replace older varieties like Floratam, aligning with their focus on sustainable grasses amidst water restrictions.

Industry Changes

Allen, who has seen the industry evolve, said farming was always

favorably looked upon, but now they are under more scrutiny as grass producers than ever. “Outsiders are more concerned about water quality or other environmental issues, and it’s forced us to focus more on best management practices and be held more accountable for inputs and balances growing grasses as well as balancing natural resources.” He explained that once they get a new farm operation running with a good team in place, they will move on to continue expanding. “Our expansions are led by good people and the ability to take on more and we just continue to take that model and stamp it out all over the US.” Allen described the turfgrass industry as a small scene that works like a big family. Woerner Farms’ significant production sites are in Bronson, FL, Clarksville, FL, Baldwin County, AL, in the Foley region and the business continues expanding outside of the Denver, CO area. Allen has a pilot’s license and enjoys flying to different business and farming locations. Turfgrass production only makes up about half of Woerner Farms, LLC. The store-based retail and wholesale model makes up about 50% of their sales. There are 160 employees total between Woerner Farms LLC and Woerner Landscape LLC. Allen explains he enjoys focusing on the production side of things, watching crops get planted into the ground and grow until harvest. “My absolute passion in all of this is I really enjoyed planting grass. I love planting grass. Any opportunity I get to go actually run a planter myself, that’s kind of like a holiday for me.” Allen is an active social media user, sharing videos from Woerner Farms, LLC. “As weird as it may sound, people enjoy farming videos and videos related to agriculture. When I started my Instagram account, thousands of people would watch and share videos. I was amazed at what I had taken for granted, as everyday life apparently was like living the American dream. They want to follow along with me as if they’re in the field.”
