Lynthia Ross

Where were you born? Did you grow up there? I was born in Augusta, Georgia – the home of golf’s greatest venue and tournament and the Godfather of Soul. What do you do for a living? I am Global Communications Leader for Club Car, a leading manufacturer of golf, consumer and utility vehicles. Aside from golf; what do you prefer for fun and relaxation? Travel. Passport stamps, please! What golf apparel do you like to wear? Anything comfortable and reasonably priced. I wear Nike, Under Armour, Greyson, and even store brands. At the PGA Show, I loved the selections from Fore All and am exciting about the Eastside Golf women’s line that will launch in April. I plan to explore these specialty brands as options for the course. Whom do you most admire for their inner and outer beauty? My mom. She’s the most resilient, brilliant and amazing woman I know – inside and out! What do you find to be the most annoying habit people demonstrate on the golf course? I appreciate a well-paced round. I prefer to enjoy golf with music, laughter and friends who can still smile as the third ball from the sleeve hits the water on the 11th hole. Name the three most important things to you in this world. My Faith, family and wellness. 14

Given the choice; would you select love, success, or money to keep yourself happy? Love. God says it’s the greatest commandment. Seek Him first and ALL these things will be added unto you. I’ll stand on that promise. What do you fear the most? Fear. When fear shows up, it brings limitations and doubt. Without fear, you can surprise yourself with what you achieve. What three people would you most like to play with in your fantasy golf foursome? My dad, Rhonda Graybeal and Barack Obama What are some of your great accomplishments? Being Mom to my son is my greatest accomplishment. Last book you read? I’m finishing up Outlive by Dr. Peter Attia on Audible. Favorite charity to support? The Family Y of Greater Augusta. I currently serve as Board Chair and so much good is happening at Camp Lakeside for children with different abilities, through our A Place to Dream bed program that provides beds and Bibles to families with children who need beds, and Cheryl’s Kitchen which has served over 1 million meals to address food insecurity in the region. The Y is so much more than a fitness center and Ys make a tremendous impact.

Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club Unveils Newly Renovated Arnold Palmer Championship Golf Course Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club

has unveiled the most significant modification to its Arnold Palmer Championship Golf Course since the course was constructed in 1990. The renovation was undertaken by Brandon Johnson, Golf Course architect for the Arnold Palmer Design Company and encompassed all the greens and tees, bunkers, the short game area, and the driving range. The biggest design changes were to the 9th hole, which included lowering the fairway and removing bunkers for a spectacular view of the lake. Other distinct changes included the 5th hole in which the green was moved to slightly shorter the hole, the 7th hole had green contouring modified with a redesigned green complex, the 13th hole with a change in green contouring, and the 18th hole had a dramatic reshaping of the green and the bunkering around it. Also, the short game practice facility was renovated with more opportunities for situational shots. “The renovations have been very well received by our members who are enjoying the beauty and userfriendly nature of the course,” said Matt Boyd, golf superintendent at Orchid Island. “Architect Brandon Johnson ensured that the integrity of the course remained intact by

16

adhering to Arnold Palmer Design Company’s stringent standards.” As a Certified Audubon Sanctuary by Audubon International with an ocean to river habitat, Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club is committed to preserving the rich wildlife found in Vero Beach. Golfers delight in the colorful and unique birds often found in and around Orchid Island. “Golf and the camaraderie and friendships made on the golf course are a cornerstone to life at Orchid Island,” said Rob Tench, Orchid Island’s General Manager. “We are also known

for our robust racquet program, including new pickleball courts, a fitness center, the historic Jungle Trail, a kayak launch, and most importantly our pristine beach.” Orchid Island is located at One Beachside Drive, Vero Beach.

Beat-The-Heat Summers in The Gaylord Golf Mecca By Greg Johnson

It’s the best situation for sharing

golfers. In the winter, Michigan golfers head south to Florida so they can keep playing their favorite game. In the summer, a booming number of Florida golfers venture north to the heart of Michigan to play their favorite courses of the Gaylord Golf Mecca. The Mecca offers long getaway summer days with play until 9 p.m. or later, and in comfortable average temperatures in the mid70s across the great green expanse of Northern Michigan. Combine that with 37 years of partnership, cooperation, vision, investment and hard work by the partners of this unique cooperative marketing model and you have the premier U.S. summer golf destination. It’s perfect beat-the-heat golf. This year, 16 landmark golf courses, including some designed by legends of architecture, and 20 welcoming lodging partners producing 20

Gaylord Golf Club all price points and levels of luxury requested or required, are banded together again. “The real reason the Mecca works and continues to grow is a really great group of owners,

managers and golf professional who have vision and believe in working together in destination marketing,” says Paul Beachnau, executive director of the Mecca since its inception in 1987.

Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 11

“We keep getting better. You continue to see Mecca members improve their golf courses and properties with renovations, investment in additions and facilities, all the hard-work items that when you put it together make for a better experience for our visitors.” The Mecca’s quality and quantity includes: • Black Lake Golf Club with its award-winning Rees Jonesdesigned golf course. • Gaylord Golf Club with its classic pristine greens that have charmed golfers for decades.

Otsego Resort

• Garland Lodge & Golf Resort, which is home to four golf courses and is in year 73 as a destination. • Indian River Golf Club, a classic which bills itself accurately as the friendliest golf course in the north. • Lakes of the North Golf Club provides a get-away-fromit-all spot with an affordable hidden-gem golf course. • The Pines Golf Course at Michaywe,’ which has been a home of classic and competitive golf for 52 years. • Otsego Resort, which is continuing multi-million dollar improvements and features two courses, including the highly acclaimed Tribute Golf Course. • Treetops Resort, with its unmatched five golf courses including the only Tom Fazio design in Michigan and the famous Rick Smithdesigned Threetops Par 3 course. Golfers continue to flock to Gaylord from all points on the map. The Mecca partners with the Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City and that has opened up new national markets. With a scenic 60-minute drive from runway to fairway, this partnership is a win for welcoming Mecca courses and southern golfers alike. Beachnau said it boils down to this: “We have 37 years of brand integrity and our best golf is in the summer when it’s too hot to play in other golf destinations. Come on up! Beat the heat!” Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 11

BINGO... EL SINKO! Smart Technology Takes the Guesswork Out of Reading Greens and Puts It In Your Hands...and Feet!

A

fter 30-plus years of playing golf, BREAK 7 EVENTY’s founder, head honcho and dream alchemist, Samir (Sam) El Mashtoub, has been on a quest to break 70. Along that journey, he conceived a technology-based innovation for reading greens and putting that he envisioned would help shave strokes off his game. While it wasn’t easy, he ran with the idea, and BREAK 7 EVENTY’s advanced golf sensor technology was hatched and introduced at the 2024 PGA Show in Orlando, FL last month to 31,000 golf industry professionals from around the world.

22

Tech products have become the focal point and wow factor of the PGA Show in recent years. And 2024 was no different. While many of these products focus on refining swing mechanics, most golfers know that proving your putting is the fastest and most consistent way to improve your game and lower your scores. The inspiration behind BREAK 7 EVENTY is a putting

concept called AimPoint. Used by professionals and amateurs alike, the method has gained popularity in recent years. Players use their feet to feel and “estimate” the slope, use an out-stretched arm and fingers to determine where to aim, then magically, stroke the putt at the correct speed and “Bingo... El sinko!” Sounding too simple (and elemental) for complicated minds?

Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 11

El Mashtoub went on a mission to invent something tangible, more precise, more effective. By combining the principles of leveling with smart technology sensors embedded in a golfer’s shoe, BREAK 7 EVENTY’s smart putting technology went from concept to reality. “In my journey to enhance my golf skills and break seventy myself, I devised a scientific, precise method for reading greens in any situation,” said El Mashtoub. “My pursuit of improving the putting process and reading greens precisely has transformed my game, bringing me closer to the realization of my dream.” Here’s how it works. BREAK 7 EVENTY’s powerful smart sensors collect thousands of data points from key locations along your putting path to the hole, providing straight forward distance, slope and alignment information. This requires three collection points. First, standing over the ball. Second, mid-way between the ball and the hole. Third, standing at the hole. This information is synched within BREAK 7 EVENTY’s smart phone app, providing golfers a quick and scientific read of every putt. break7eventy’s smart tech analyzes movements every second using AI-based algorithms, refined in clinical settings to measure more than 30 different movements and metrics - the majority of which cannot be measured by a smartphone, smart watch or smart ring. It measures both linear and rotational motion in 3D. Internet connectivity is not required Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 11

when practicing or playing a round. The app’s “Healthy Golfer section” also offers some cool features that monitor your health while practicing or playing. The unique quarter-sized sensors in the insoles send accurate distance slope and aiming data to your smartphone. The sensors are easily installed, removed, recharged, and calibrated. When your insoles wear out, the individual modules are easily transferred to a new pair. The app will also tell the user when it’s time to replace the insoles. BREAK 7 EVENTY’s insoles work with most preferred footwear brands; the company plans to manufacture golf shoes as well. The app’s simple to read displays and easy step-by-step process provides minimal disruption to the cadence and speed of your round. And if you’re a golfer of a certain age, it eliminates the need to bend over, get on the ground, bend like a pretzel, or rely on GPS to read your putt. Sam’s passion for the game and golfers like himself is infectious, prophetic, and inspiring. “Our technology was created with one goal in mind,” said El Mashtoub. “To help golfers surpass what they previously saw as limits so they can continually best themselves in putting and in life.”

SIX KEY FEATURES 1. Distance Mode:

Golfers can take precise measurements on demand, with a mean error of 2%.

2. Slope Mode:

Golfers can obtain slope readings on demand, with a mean error of 0.21 degrees (0.37%).

3. Full Aiming Mode:

Golfers can achieve full aim with a target point with only two measurments.

4. Stimp Adjustment:

Golfers can input their desired stimp on demand.

5. Locate The Aiming Target:

Golfers are guided by augmented reality to the exact aiming target on demand.

6. Backstroke & Metronome:

Golfers are provided with precise backstroke length coupled with an audible or vibrating metronome.

BREAK 7 EVENTY insoles will be available this summer. When it comes to putting, if you’re a smart golfer committed to improving your game where scoring counts the most, this smart tech looks like a smart investment. For more information, visit www. brk70.com.

Playing for a Cause Another great year

for the Playing for a Cause. This year we partnered up with Agile Group Realty on our fundraising goal to help those faced with gynecologic cancers in Central Florida through AdventHealth Cancer Institute. Finding a cure for cancer is our number one goal. Luke Donald Crafts Celebratory Cocktail at Iconic South Florida Restaurant 1000 NORTH

Swing into bold flavors at 1000

NORTH! PGA TOUR legend Luke Donald has collaborated on a golf-themed cocktail at one of his favorite South Florida waterfront restaurants. Called Luke’s PARfect Negroni, the upscale drink celebrates Donald’s recent Ryder Cup victory as team captain, and sets the mood for the Cognizant Classic in February. The flavors of Luke’s PARfect Negroni honors Donald’s British heritage, his residency in Jupiter, Fla., and Italy – the host country of the 2023 Ryder Cup. Luke’s PARfect Negroni adds a British twist on the classic Italian libation with No. 3 London Dry Gin, and draws in Florida’s tropical flavors 30

with Munyon’s Paw Paw apertif. Combined with Carpano Antica’s sweet vermouth and Campari, the cocktail delivers a rich, smooth, and complex flavor profile. “Off the course, a well-crafted cocktail at 1000 NORTH is one of my preferred ways to unwind and celebrate the victories, big or small,” said Luke Donald. “Just like golf, it’s all about balance and precision – the right mix of flavors creating a perfect blend for a victory toast.” No. 3 London Dry Gin sets the benchmark for quality, blending a perfect balance of juniper, citrus, and spice. It was created by London’s oldest wine and spirit merchant, Berry Bros. & Rudd, that worked with the only person in the world who has a Ph.D. in

gin. Munyon’s Paw Paw is native to Florida’s Palm Beach region, exploding with flavors of papaya, passion fruit, hibiscus, elderflower, and much more! Luke’s PARfect Negroni is available to enjoy at 1000 NORTH from February 1 to May 31.

in attendance. Demo Day serves as an excellent introduction for all PGM students to see how the manufacturing side of the industry works. As a PGM student, attending Demo Day is a must. It is the perfect way to dive head first into all that the week had to offer. Being a first time attendee this year, I discovered there was a unique opportunity to learn how the veterans in the industry expand their network. While at the show, students will meet future bosses, mentors, co-workers, and friends. Connecting with present-day golf professionals can enhance the career trajectory for PGM students at all levels. While there, I had the pleasure of meeting many professionals, vendors, and fellow

Swimming With The Big Fish:

A Golf Management Student’s Experience At The PGA Show By Joseph Harmon

The annual PGA Show is an

opportunity for the golf industry to converge in the heart of Florida for a week like no other. Since 1985 the PGA Show has been held at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando. Throughout the week, attendees will range from veteran golf professionals to Professional Golf Management (PGM) students from PGA accredited universities across the country. During the week, manufacturers spotlight their latest products and technology while influential figures in the golf industry 32

conduct educational seminars on nearly any topic imaginable. To kick off the week attendees come together at Orange County National for Demo Day. This is where the golf equipment manufacturers shine the brightest. The advantage of Demo Day for companies is the ability to showcase and promote new technology and equipment by providing the consumer with hands-on opportunities. Having the opportunity to test the latest driver and explore cutting-edge launch monitor technology can be advantageous for everyone

PGM students. Connecting with people from varying backgrounds was one of the many advantages of attending the PGA Show. Education takes center stage at the PGA Show. Participants across the convention center listen in to gain insights from leaders in their respective fields. This year's schedule featured a diverse array of seminar topics covering Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 11

teaching and coaching methodologies to social media strategies and beyond. PGM students have the privilege of learning from instructors who have dedicated hours of studying, practicing, and teaching the essential skills required for success in their future careers. I had the pleasure of attending a seminar by Callaway. The topic of the seminar was “Toptracer Coaching” with Thomas Petersson. It was incredibly informative and I highly recommend that PGM students take advantage of these unique educational opportunities. PGM students from various parts of the country will venture to the PGA Show each year, with many experiencing it for the first time. Stepping into the 1.1 million square feet of the Orange County Convention Center can feel daunting for anyone. However, when you consider the potential for personal and professional growth as a PGA professional, there is only one thing left to do, start swimming with the big fish.

Far Out, Man! by Richard Wiget

any years ago, my nephew Chuck took me to a Grateful Dead show at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon. Wow, what a spectacle! The music and the environment was like nothing I had yet experienced. I was amazed at all the colorful tie-dyed art being sold in the parking lots. Some years later, that became me, making tie-dye shirts and selling them at shows. About four years ago, I became an avid golfer, playing weekly as a member at Diamond Woods Golf Course, not far from where I now live in Veneta. I decided to make myself some tie-dyed golf shirts to look stylish on the course. People loved them and always recognized me. More recently, I began to see pro golfers in PGA tournaments wearing tie-dyed golf shirts. But they weren’t made by my company - Made By Real Hippies! This provided a light bulb moment and the idea to branch out beyond selling my 36

T-shirts at markets and festivals and introduce my craft to the golf world. For several years now, I’ve been creating and selling golf polos at weekend markets. The feedback has been tremendous, so I decided to take the big leap of Oregon faith and launch Made by Real Hippies golf apparel across the golf globe. That meant making the cross-country trek to Orlando, Florida, where Made by Real Hippies debuted at the “Major” of the golf business – the 2024 PGA Merchandise Show, January 24-26. Our small, unassuming, 10x10 pop-up tent lit up the 1.1 million square feet at the Orange County Convention Center in more ways than one. It was hard to miss us, despite the 1100 exhibitors at the show. Our booth offered the grooviest, brightest, and most creative tie-dye apparel including men’s and women’s golf polos, mock turtlenecks, underwear, towels, bucket caps and hats, and my latest creation,

tie-dyed golf balls. Our polo shirts are the real deal - made with a soft, silky 65% polyester and 35% cotton blend - offering a little extra comfort and coolness while you play.

Channel your inner hippie and hit the course in tie-dyed style. Made by Real Hippies speaks to the fun, diversity and alternative ways people can engage in the game of golf today. Our tie-dye shirts and accessories are hand-crafted and created in small batches. This ensures that each one is unique, just like you are. Lydia Ko & Nelly Korda Post Big LPGA Tour Wins at 2024 Season Openers

It didn’t take long for Lydia Ko

and Nelly Korda to return to the winner’s circle. After winless campaigns on the LPGA Tour last year, both Ko and Korda started off 2024 with big victories. But, it could have easily been back-to-back wins for Ko had it not been for Korda’s fantastic fourth-round finish at the Drive On Championship at the Bradenton (Florida) Country Club on Sunday, January 28. More on Korda’s win in a moment. Ko started the LPGA Tour’s 2024 season in a triumphant fashion by winning the opening tournament of the year when she captured the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions which was held at the Lake Nona Golf and 38

Country Club in Orlando, Florida from January 18-21. Her four-round total of 14-under-par 274 (69-6768-70) gave her a two-stroke edge over 19-year-old runner-up Alexa Pano of Lake Worth Beach, Florida who matched Ko’s closing 70. “The win is obviously great,” said Ko. “I wasn’t sure if I was going to be back in the winner’s circle, and to be back in the first tournament of the season, it’s pretty cool and so much faster than I could have ever anticipated.” Ko’s victory at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions was her 20th career LPGA Tour victory. Her firstplace check was for $225,000. Ko is now the seventh woman to win 20 LPGA Tour titles before

the age of 27, joining Nancy Lopez, Karrie Webb, Se Ri Pak, Mickey Wright, Lorena Ochoa and Kathy Whitworth. In addition to Pano, other players who had a chance to put pressure on Ko included Canada’s Brooke Henderson, the tournament’s defending champion, Japan’s Ayaka Furue, and two other Americans, Cheyenne Knight and Ally Ewing. Henderson had an impressive four-under 68, achieved with new irons in her bag, to finish third at ten-under par (278). Knight (69), Ewing (72) and Furue (71) finished in a three-way tie for fourth at eight-under-par (280). Rounding out the top eight finishers were England’s Charley Hull and American Rose Zhang. Both Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 11

players finished at seven-underpar 281 after they closed with 71s. The playing conditions for the entire field during the final round on Sunday, January 21 were less than ideal, as the early morning temperatures were in the mid-40s. Players and fans

in attendance were dressed in multiple layers while donning gloves and toboggan hats to stay warm. Hand-warmers were a popular item for all those in attendance. Ko was delighted that she battled the elements and won. “This is a great and comfortable

way to start the season,” added Ko. “I haven’t played particularly that great at this event before. I tried to be really steady. There were nerves coming down the stretch, but I felt like I tried to stay as patient as I could.” It might be fair to say that Ko is back in mid-season form as her Tournament of Champions victory came on the heels of her win in the unofficial mixed-team Grant Thornton Invitational alongside Australian Jason Day which was held at the Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Florida back in early December. Ko, who has a home at Lake Nona, which could be claimed as having a slight ‘home-field’ advantage, admits that winning on the LPGA Tour remains a difficult challenge every week. “I’m playing against the best female golfers week-in and weekout,” Ko said, “and you know that your ‘B’ game is not going to cut it. People think golf is easy. It’s not.” In addition to the tournament featuring the LPGA pros, there was a simultaneous 72-hole modified stableford competition involving celebrities such as prominent and successful athletes, coaches, 39

and actors/entertainers. The 50+ celebrity field included retired Major League Baseball players Derek Lowe, Mark Mulder, John Smoltz, Roger Clemens, AJ Pierzynski, and Kevin Millar, ex-ATP tennis player Mardy Fish, former NFL stars Emmit Smith, Marcus Allen, Dwight Freeney, three-time national championship college football coach Urban Meyer, comedian Larry the Cable Guy, actor Jack Wagner, and LPGA Hall of Famer Annika Sorenstam. The winner of the celebrity division tournament was New York Mets infielder Jeff McNeal. He finished with 138 points, two better than Sorenstam, who came up shy once more on her home course. The next week, the LPGA Tour’s ‘Florida Swing’ continued at the Bradenton Country Club where the LPGA Drive On Championship was held. A field of 120 players started play on Thursday, January 25 along this Donald Ross design where the membership is celebrating this club’s 100th anniversary this year. At the end of the first round, Ko and Korda were tied for the lead after shooting six-under-par rounds of 65. After round two, Korda remained in the lead after a secondround 67. During the third-round, Korda finished her round by holing a greenside bunker shot for an eagle at the par-five 17th hole and then she completed her round with a birdie three on the 18th hole. That gave her a three-under-par 68 which left her at -13 for three rounds, with a four-shot cushion over her nearest pursuers, Japan’s Ayaka Furue, American Megan Khang, and Ko. At the beginning of the fourth round, Korda, a resident of 40

Bradenton, was the clear favorite to win. But, it was a difficult day for the field as the brisk breeze, chilly temperatures, quick greens, and aggressive pin positions put a premium on ball striking, chipping, pitching, and putting. In fact, conditions were so tough on Sunday that only six players were able to break 70, one of whom was Ko, who shot a 69. For all intents and purposes, the golf tournament came down to the final two holes of regulation play – the 71st and 72nd holes. When Ko completed her fourth round, her two-under 69 gave her a three-shot lead over Korda who was walking down the 71st fairway (aka, 17th hole). Korda had struggled all day in the conditions as she was five-over par on the day and had dropped to -8 for the tournament. To tie Ko, Korda needed to conclude her fourth round in the same way as she finished her third round – with an eagle-birdie finish. The odds were not in Korda’s favor. In fact, plans were in place to honor Ko as the winner which would have clinched her spot in the LPGA Hall of Fame. Many champagne bottles had been uncorked and were on ice. And, LPGA Commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan was on hand to congratulate Ko, who was still the clear favorite while sitting in the 18th hole scoring tent. But, then the tide began to turn and the bottles of champagne remained on ice. After reaching the greenside fringe at 17 in two shots, Korda rolled in a long eagle putt to close the gap to one, with one hole to go. But, on that Sunday, birdies at 18

were in short supply. Only Canadian Brooke Henderson had been able to birdie the 18th hole. The odds of Ko winning were still strong as the 18th pin was in the back right section of the green. So, what did Korda do? Her approach shot at 18 was better than she could have imagined. In fact, her ball hit the green and rolled toward the hole. The crowd responded with a long and loud roar as Korda’s ball finished less than 12 inches from the cup. Korda almost finished with back-to-back eagles which would have won the tournament in stunning and shocking fashion. Instead, she tapped in the birdie putt to force a playoff with Ko. Believe it or not, but both Ko and Korda were then tied at -11 after 72 holes of regulation play. The bottles of champagne remained on ice. Ko and Korda then headed to the 18th tee for a sudden-death playoff. After both players halved the hole with fours, they returned to the 18th tee for another attempt to break the tie. Korda’s approach to the green finished just beyond the back fringe, not far from the pin at 18, while Ko’s approach finished 30 feet to the left of the pin. After Ko left her first putt five feet short of the hole, she missed the remaining fivefooter for par, which left the door open for Korda whose greenside chip finished four feet from the cup. Korda proceeded to drain her short, four-foot putt to win. It was Korda’s ninth win of her career and it denied Ko’s entry into the LPGA Hall of Fame, for the time being. Korda’s victory at the LPGA Drive On Championship was her ninth career LPGA Tour victory. Her firstplace check was for $262,500. It was her first LPGA victory since the ANNIKA driven by Gainbridge at Pelican in November 2022. For Korda, there’s nothing like winning at home, just as Ko had done the previous week at Lake Nona. “Every win has a story,” said Korda. “Being in my hometown and having the hometown support was incredible. I didn’t think this many people would show up. I couldn’t have done it without all their positive energy.” Ko’s Hall of Fame champagne celebration remains on ice. Golf History Is Reborn At Cabot Citrus Farms By Tony Leodora

When the World Woods golf

destination opened in the ‘90s, with two Tom Fazio-designed courses, it was the talk of the golf world. Both courses debuted in the Top 100. That, of course, was at the height of the golf course building boom. For a short stretch of time, answering a false narrative that America needed a massive amount of golf course construction

to meet increased demand in the industry, we were seeing a new golf course opening almost every day of the year. After the turn of the century, a series of events brought golf’s boom time to a screeching halt. First, there were the tragic events of 9/11. Then the financial collapse in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Shortly after there were two blazingly hot summers that destroyed much of the grass on

courses in the East, especially in the Southeast. Many courses experimented with a new strain of bentgrass that, unfortunately, was not heat-tolerant. Courses started to close, much faster than new ones were being built. Others struggled to stay afloat. World Woods, situated in Brooksville, a rather remote area of Florida, was a classic example. Ownership fell on hard times and never recovered. The property

No. 3 is a ruggedly impressive par 3 hole over water.

42

Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 11

While much of the Caroo course is reminiscent of hallowed Pine Valley, this particular hole brings the famous Hell's Half-Acre to mind. deteriorated from its original lustre. Thankfully, a sale took place and now, ownership with a recognized brand has revived the property under a new name — Cabot Citrus Farms. Make no mistake about it. The project is not a renovation … it is a total rebirth. And excitement abounds. The Cabot name has made its mark internationally, with heralded destination golf at places like Cape Breton (Nova Scotia, Canada), Castle Stewart (Scotland), Cabot Pacific (British Columbia, Canada), Point Hardy Golf Club (St. Lucia). Now, they bring their high-end style of golf and lifestyle to Florida. The old courses are gone. Architect Kyle Franz has worked his magic on the first of two new courses — Karoo. Franz got immediate acclaim when he did a major renovation of the old, tired municipal golf course near Pinehurst, NC – Southern Pines. He brought the same rugged, craggy bunker style of design to Cabot Citrus Farms – and the look is a perfect fit for an inland natural setting. “It was very exciting to work with the piece of property I found Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 11

here in Brooksville,” said Franz, during a well-attended media day and grand opening in late January. “The site is tucked between two state forests. There were so many natural features and a variety of sand pines, palmetto trees and very old moss-covered oaks. It inspired me to create dramatic holes.” He definitely created dramatic holes, as a large amount of trees were cleared on Karoo, allowing for magnificent vistas throughout the course. And he also created dramatic green complexes. With wide fairway corridors greeting golfers off the tee, the defense of the course comes from its severely undulated greens. Putting is an exciting adventure at Karoo. The second course, The Roost, is under constuction now. It is co-designed by Franz and Mike Nuzzo. Placed on the site of the original Oaks course, it is more of a walk through corridors of live oaks – but the major feature is a 40-foot-deep sinkhole that has been incorporated into the design. There are also two other courses. The Squeeze, designed by Nuzzo, is a nine-hole course

with holes that range from 100 yards to 550 yards. Inspiration is drawn from a collection of the world’s best short par 4s. The Wedge, also designed by Nuzzo, is a 10-hole short course with a collection of par 3s that feature huge waste areas, greens with dramatic slopes and a variety of varied lies. The most interesting feature is the fact that lights are being installed to allow play after dusk. The final component to the Cabot Citrus Farms picture is an assortment of high-end lodges and housing. Current pricing for the real estate starts at $1.5 million for the twobedroom cottages and goes to $2.8 million for a four-bedroom cottage. Benefits of being an owner include access to a rental program, housekeeping services and a variety of amenities. While the original World Woods property claimed great golf, it never had all of the other components needed to ensure success in a rather remote part of Florida. Now, with the addition of the proven Cabot touch, the equation for a total golf destination is complete. 43

Excitement Continues to Build in Golf World And It Is Reflected in PGA Show’s New Products By Tony Leodora

It was not too many years ago

that people were wondering if golf was headed for extinction. Players were leaving the game regularly. Golf courses were closing in record numbers. And new courses were not being built. All it took was a pandemic to reverse those trends. Now, golf’s death plunge has taken a sharp turn upwards. Public courses are packed. Private memberships are full … and there are wait lists to get in. Buoyed by the news from the National Golf Foundation that more than 1 million new golfers joined the American ranks in 2023 and an all-time record 531 million rounds of golf were played, the 2024 PGA Show reflected an industrywide display of excitement. More than 31,000 golf industry professionals and executives from 89 countries and all 50 states came together to meet with more than 1,000 companies at the 71st PGA Show in Orlando. Navigating the miles of aisles and sorting through all of the new products was not an easy task but, once again, a list of the Top Ten items to catch the eye at the PGA Show has been prepared. Included are products – big and small – that are certain to help every golfer.

American Fit provides a full line of men’s and women’s shirts and tops, manufactured with the finest blends of materials, as well as high-quality 100 percent Pima Cotton outerwear. That activity at the American Fit booth throughout the PGA Show was indicative of the enthusiastic reception the new line of golf apparel received from the many interested buyers. www.americanfit.com

X, XS, RXS and RX. For the first time Bridgestone has allowed an imprinted graphic on the cover of their golf balls, making the exception in an attempt to help golfers improve their focus. The process was developed by Bridgestone staffer Jason Day, along with his mental coach Jason Goldsmith. The process consists of three easy steps that work with the MINDSET graphic: Identify, Visualize and Focus. The first step, in which players look at the outer, red circle of the MINDSET graphic, involves making critical decisions regarding the upcoming shot. This step requires the player to Identify the target and gather information regarding distance, wind conditions, club selection, and shot shape. Once these decisions have been made, the inner yellow circle prompts the player to move to step two, which is to Visualize the shot path. This step is about connecting to the target and includes visualizing the shot to the target. In the final step, the green dot prompts full FOCUS on execution. www.bridgestonegolf.com

American Fit Golf Apparel

From the foundation of Valgroup International, an established textile company that made a name for itself by providing full manufacturing services to other brands, comes American Fit. Developing their own brand in the golf industry was a logical extension of the business. American high-fashion design, combined with recognized high-quality fabric production in Peru, has produced an outstanding line of apparel, not only for golfers but also for athletes who want the best styles … in addition to body protection with UV filters, anti-microbial elements and rain-resistance qualities. 50

CertiFresh Cigar Four-Pack

CertiFresh Cigar, the individually packaged premium cigar that guarantees a quality, fresh cigar every time, is celebrating its 25th anniversary. The company has made its reputation on providing individually packaged cigars to golf shops everywhere, guaranteeing that their product stays fresh for one year, thanks to their patented humidor pouches. Success has followed wherever CertiFresh goes. So, if one fresh cigar breeds success, four fresh cigars should be four Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 11

times as successful. That’s the theory behind the new CertiFresh four-pack. Now, customers can purchase a four-cigar pack that proved to be hugely popular during a test market last year. The pack includes four different brands – Rocky Patel Disciple Half Corona, Ashton Half Corona, Romeo Petite Bully, and Oliva Series O #4. The one thing that all four brands have in common is that they are a premium, fresh cigar. The other thing they have in common is that they are all short, quick smokes – perfect for on the golf course or during the after-golf rehash of the game. www.certifreshcigar.com

Copper Tech Plus Training Glove

For years, Copper Tech has built its reputation on producing one of the finest performing and wearing golf gloves on the market. In addition, the copper-infused compression technology has proven to be a godsend for those who need something to help soothe joint and muscle pain – especially from chronic arthritis conditions. Now, Copper Tech has gone one step further. They have combined all of their proven quality and technology into a golf training glove that actually can help those who wear and practice with the glove become better golfers. The gloves include knuckle alignment guides on the top of the glove to prevent golfers from developing too weak or too strong of a grip. They also include an alignment arrow that points to proper shoulder position. On the bottom side of the glove, in addition to the patented non-slip grip, there are gripping guides to keep the club grip in the proper position in the inside of the fingers, rather than slipping into the palm of the hand. The idea is to use the club to practice and receive the addition benefit of relief from copper’s improved circulation. Retail price is $39.95 and one size fits most. www.coppertechgloves.com

When combined with the permanent mounting stand – for use in a gym, at the golf club fitness center, or in the home gym, GolfForever becomes the most complete golfspecific training system every created. www.golfforever.com

Greenkeepers– Dri Mark

Greenkeepers, the Philadelphia-based injection molding plastics manufacturing company, was founded in 1996 and has created a diverse line of golf accessories over the years. Most noted are the Four Yards More Tee, the Survivor Tee

and the Line-M-Up golf ball marker. Now, the Line-M-Up – used by golf professionals, Tour players and top amateurs everywhere – has a new partner. The Dri Mark marking pen is the perfect complement to the Line-M-Up. It is so perfect that it is even sold in a blister pack containing the Line-M-Up and two marking pens. For those who already have the Line-M-Up, the Dri Mark is sold separately in a two-pack – red and black ink -- for a retail price of $3.99. The beauty of the Dri Mark – unlike other marking pens – is that it provides excellent adhesion, superior durability and is moisture resistant. In golf, it is often the little things that make a difference – and Greenkeepers has been producing the little things, in the way of useful and helpful accessories for more than 25 years. www.gkspikes.com

LagMaster

The great majority of avid golfers have a garage full of training aids. The overwhelming reason they sit in the garage is they are too complicated to operate … or to provide overall and lasting improvement to the golf game. Unless they come with your own personal golf instructor, who also can be kept in the garage, it is doubtful the training aid will be put to successful use. Until now! The LagMaster is the simplest, most understandable training aid on the market. It is not a Swiss Army Knife, designed to fix multiple flaws in the golf game. Instead, it is designed to help the golfer create the proper lag in the swing … and make it permanent. It accomplishes this by promoting imprints to the motor memory for the proper downswing sequence. Developed by top instructor Mike Dickson (15 years at Congressional CC), LagMaster promises to produce more lag in 10 swings or less. The training aid is very simple and can hook onto your own club ($119.99) for practice outside, or it can be attached to a weighted practice club (additional 51

$129.99) for practice indoors. Every great player created and sustained lag in their down stroke. Now, so can anyone. The result is a swing that creates more speed, greater consistency and better contact. www.lagmastersports.com

Tour Edge Golf, the company that has continually gained market share over the years in the highly competitive equipment market, made huge strides at the top end of golf’s hierarchy with its Tour Edge Exotics line of premium clubs. The best professional and amateur players have discovered the quality and performance. Now the company is once again making waves in the equipment industry by bringing a bit of that high-end technology to their line affordable line of Hot Launch drivers. Adjustability, in addition to hightech materials, in an affordably priced driver is not found anywhere else in the

device that fits in the golf bag and can be brought out when help is needed on the green. When that green is covered by leaves and other debris from the trees – no problem. Just pull out the Zoom Broom and flip the switch. A powerful blast of air easily and legally will clear a path to the cup. After golf, just hang the Zoom Broom in the garage for easy recharging … or for use in keeping that garage floor spotlessly clean. And the suggested retail price is an affordable $189. www.zoombrooms.com

Makefield Putters – MakeFit Home Fitting System

When the Makefield Putter hit the market and debuted at the PGA Show in 2023 it was not an exaggeration to say that the breakthrough putter made one of the biggest splashes on the equipment side of the golf industry in years. The orders started immediately … and have not stopped. A quality putter, with an assortment of accepted styles, plus expert fitting from some of the finest professionals and instructors in the country was Makefield’s formula for success. The only thing missing was a convenient way to fit the putter to the golfer. Not every fitting center was in close proximity. Maybe the times weren’t coordinated. Or, for some, there was the intimidation and stage fright associated with a live fitting session. The answer: The MakeFit Home Fitting System. Now a golfer can provide some basic stats and get an entire fitting system sent to his or her home. Provide a deposit and keep the kit as long as necessary – until the perfect fit is assured. Return the kit and the deposit is returned. There is a $20 charge for use of the fitting system, which is immediately applied to the cost of the purchase of a Makefield Putter. The kit includes two club heads and four shafts with different hosel configurations, lie angles and grip styles. It also includes extra weights, washers, wrenches and screws needed to get the perfect fit. www.makefieldputters.com

market. The new Hot Launch drivers are available in the C524 model, for a lower, boring trajectory, or the E524 model, which produces a higher launch angle. And, as with all Tour Edge clubs, they are covered by a lifetime guarantee. The best feature may be the astonishing $249.99 suggested retail price. www.touredgegolf.com

Zoom Broom

The Rules of Golf may stipulate a maximum of 14 clubs in the bag, but the Rules of Mother Nature sometimes demand a 15th club. When the wind starts howling, make that 15th club a Zoom Broom. The Zoom Broom is a batteryoperated, rechargeable, club-shaped Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 11

The Michael J. and

Tamara Rae Hoffman Family Charitable Gift Fund has donated $1 million to GCSAA’s First Green program, the hands-on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education program of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA). The Mike and Tami Hoffman “STEAM Ahead” Initiative will fund the addition of arts to First Green, which will elevate it from a STEM curriculum to a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) curriculum. Mike Hoffman, retired chairman and CEO of the Toro Company, and Tami Hoffman, announced this gift in spectacular fashion by dropping a banner from the top of the Phoenix Convention Center while suspended 60 feet above the Trade Show Grand Opening. at the 2024 GCSAA Conference and Trade Show. The Hoffmans were then lowered to the stage via a lift where they were greeted by cheering high school students from Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) at Tonopah (Ariz.) Valley High School. Joining them on the stage was JAG Valley High School teacher Hannah Olver. During the ceremony Hoffman presented checks to the GCSAA as well as to Tonopah Valley High School to fund the inaugural Mike and Tami Hoffman Classroom Grant. Founded in 1997, the GCSAA First Green program is the only education and environmental outreach program using golf courses as learning labs. Since its inception, GCSAA First Green has reached over 11,000 students in the United States and Canada through learning labs that bring the classroom to life on the golf course. The program also gives students a first-hand look at 54

Retired Toro Executive Mike Hoffman's family fund donates $1 million to enhance GCSAA’s First Green with STEAM Ahead Initiative the important role superintendents play in their communities. Within the last two years, the program has expanded to the U.K. and Australia. The new STEAM curriculum will equip students with skills, knowledge and a mindset to succeed in a rapidly changing world and prepare for a wider range of career opportunities. The arts curriculum encompasses more than just traditional fine arts, but also includes aspects such as graphic design and architecture. With the arts component, GCSAA First Green will be able to reach a more diverse student base by appealing to students not drawn to traditional STEM subjects. “Tami and I are pleased to be able to amplify the message of GCSAA’s First Green,” Mike Hoffman said. “It is such an innovative program that not only introduces the many benefits that golf courses provide to their communities and the knowledge and skill needed to manage them, but it also shows students that the golf industry is a viable career path with many opportunities. Being able to support adding the arts element to First Green seems appropriate given the beautiful landscapes golf provides all around the world. The golf industry has made such a positive impact on our lives, and we hope our gift will have a similar impact on First Green students.”

In addition to adding creative arts stations to the GCSAA’s First Green field trip lineup, the Mike and Tami Hoffman STEAM Ahead Initiative will also enhance First Green by: • Providing the Mike and Tami Hoffman Classroom Grants to enable teachers to offer classroom curriculum prior to their First Green field trip. • Expanding First Green curriculum from elementary and middle school to high school as a way to introduce high schoolers to careers in golf. • Expanding First Green Liaisons (GCSAA members who serve as mentors and promote the program) to power more field trips. “GCSAA is deeply appreciative of the Hoffmans’ generous gift, GCSAA CEO Rhett Evans said. “Throughout his career at Toro, Mike made an indelible mark on the golf industry, and he’s continuing that legacy and making a difference in the lives of the thousands of students who participate in GCSAA’s First Green field trips every year.” The enhancements to GCSAA’s First Green funded by the Mike and Tami Hoffman STEAM Ahead Initiative will be rolled out later in 2024. A Turf Pirate's Journal $trees and other mysteries$

We who have managed heavily

wooded golf courses understand the love and hate that exists between highly manicured turf and majestic trees. I was once given a verbal gem by a respected greenkeeper who said, “the only shade that should touch a putting green is the shadow cast from the flagstick”. Well, we know where he stands on the subject. The Ancient and Honorable Tribe of Turf Pirates has often talked about our subtribe, Tree Pirates. They craft the care of trees and large shrubs into living art and when deemed necessary remove with great skill the tree that has become a safety threat. I am a unique blend of an International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist and a BIGGA Master Greenkeeper 56

and as such I wear multiple hats (sometimes hard hats, note this issues photo). Trees are awesome, and they help make golf great, but they are also ever changing in size and stability and must therefore be managed with both science and art. I truthfully shed a tear when the Famed Eisenhower Tree at Augusta National despite epic efforts succumbed to an Ice storm in 2014, it was over 100 years old. You see tree care on golf properties is somewhat of a mystery. It takes a wizard or a gaggle of wizards to communicate the value of trees and the differences in species and the placement, pruning and root management required to get the most out of tree assets and rest assured they are assets. There is a price to be paid to become a respected tree

professional, especially if one has skills in other green arts. It is the most dangerous job in the green industry. Every cut has the potential to go wrong. I have climbed the big one’s back east and have saved heirloom trees that were weak from Florida to Texas. I have cataloged Path Trees across the Piedmont (Creek and Cherokee) forests and for 10 years cared for the Robert Trent Jones trees (three Loblolly Pines splitting the 12th fairway of the Stonemont course in Stone Mountain Park). I have planted more than I have removed but each removal was necessary and each planting strategic. I have some cool scars from losing my focus when the job seems too simple. One bind or kick back and things change (wear the chaps and glasses). Trees and people do mysterious things under pressure, and it is different every day. I approach arboriculture with reverence, and I blend many green assets into great golf and nature experiences. I aspire to leave these skills with the next generation as I am clearly in the fourth quarter of my career. I think back to being roped into a 70-footer on the river. I think back to pruning apple and peach trees around the clubhouse. Those perfectly shaped Japanese Maples on the main drive still make me smile and that’s when I am reminded how great the turf looks around these areas. That’s the mystery Turf Pirates where does our drive for great golf courses find balance in the debate over turf and trees. It is a mystery even within a veteran, yet we know that within us each day we find the way like finding a certain needle in a stack of needles. Learn, Practice, Teach and Reflect Turf Pirates for our jobs are complex yet infinitely simple. Every plant is sacred, and we are blessed to tend the garden where the game of golf resides. Until next time Turf Pirates be brilliant! Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 11

Discover Crossroads at Palmetto Bluff: A Reversible Golf Course with NorthBridge® Bermudagrass By Cecilia Brown

Nestled in the picturesque

Bluffton, South Carolina, Palmetto Bluff strategically decided in 2023 to carpet its new golf course, Crossroads, with NorthBridge® Bermudagrass. King-Collins Golf Course Design and Sod Solutions Professionals worked hand in hand to select a grass that would hold up to the desires and needs of the new reversible ninehole course, stretching across and expansive 3,100 yards. “What’s unique about what KingCollins did here is just the way the course is laid out and the number of options that it’s going to create for us as managers, for the golfers and for the members. It’s really 18 holes in a nine-hole footprint. So there are 11 greens out here – some greens are double greens, some greens are triple greens and some greens are only played in one direction,” said Crossroad’s Golf Course Superintendent Adam Deiwert. “You can literally walk in fairway from one side of the course to the other side of the course and never leave the fairways.” The choice of NorthBridge, renowned for its resilience during droughts and cold snaps, was further validated by its 60

endorsement from numerous prestigious facilities nationwide. NorthBridge was also selected due to its rapid establishment and ability to be kept low and fast. With two par-threes, five par-fours and two par-fives, the course offers an invigorating golfing experience for players. “Seeing the difference from zoysias to bermuda with NorthBridge has just been amazing. I know bermuda roots in and establishes quickly, but this seemed to take it to a whole other level on the speed that it was able to grow in,” Deiwert said. The NorthBridge was harvested from Green Acres Turf Farm in Furman, SC and Carolina Turf in Raeford, NC. Sod Solutions Professionals oversaw the entire project and its team emphasized the project would not have been possible without partners and growers like Joe Poole and Gary Youmans. Working alongside both farms, Sod Solutions Professionals was able to secure the acreage and quality needed to successfully install the

grass, which was completed by Kirkpatrick’s Turf & Landscape Management, based in Georgia. The NorthBridge harvested from Green Acres Turf Farm grew in at a record 100 days on the farm after planting. The superior color and condition of the sod when it left the farm are impressive examples of the rapid growth and density of NorthBridge.

Patriot Golf Day® has become the largest grass-roots golf fundraiser in America – a joint initiative of The PGA of America and the USGA, Patriot Golf Day enlists the support of public and private golf facilities across the country. Funds support Folds of Honor, providing educational scholarships to the children and spouses of service members killed or disabled while serving in America’s Armed Forces.

GET INVOLVED Although the national promotion of Patriot Golf Day is over Labor Day weekend, you can play golf any time of the year to support the families of our fallen and disabled service members. Here are a few ways to get involved.
