mais importantes e bem preservadas do país. Ela é o resultado da expulsão dos judeus de Castela e constituiu, no seu tempo, a expansão da vila em redor do castelo. De entre os cristãos-novos que aqui viveram (judeus convertidos ao cristianismo) destaca-se o botânico Garcia da Orta, autor de Colóquio dos Simples e Drogas da Índia, uma das mais importantes obras da ciência médica e botânica do séc. XVI. Desvie até à muralha exterior [4] para desfrutar das bonitas vistas sobre a vila e visite a antiga Sinagoga [5], uma habitação adaptada que alberga um pequeno mas bem exposto acervo museológico. No piso térreo ficava o espaço de culto, onde se julga ter sido aberto o tabernáculo numa das paredes da habitação. Este está dividido em dois espaços, servia para guardar os manuscritos sagrados e os santos óleos utilizados nas práticas religiosas, e a pianha, do lado esquerdo, era utilizada para pousar as Sagradas Escrituras. Dentro do bairro amuralhado sobressaem a Igreja de N. Sra. da Alegria (séc. XVII) [6], com interior revestido a azulejos poliand one of the most important and well preserved in the country. It is the result of the expansion of the Jews from Castile and in its time constituted the expansion of the town around the castle. Among the new Christians who lived here (Jews converted to Christianity) stand out the botanical gardens Garcia da Orta, author of Colóquio dos Simples e Drogas da Índia, one of the most important works of medical and botanical science of the XVI century. Take a detour to the outside wall [4] to enjoy the beautiful views over the town and visit the old Synagogue [5], a building which was adapted and houses a small but well exhibited museum collection. On the bottom floor was the space for worship, where it is believed that the tabernacle was opened in one of the walls of the building. The latter is divided into two spaces, one used to keep the sacred manuscripts and holy oils used in the religious practices, and the pianha, on the left side which was used to put the down the Holy Scriptures. Within the walled quarter stand out the N. Sra. da Alegria Church ( XVII century) [6] with its interior covered in polychromed tiles of

cromados da mesma época, o castelo fortificação à qual foram acrescentados reforços abaluartados no séc. XVII, e ainda os inúmeros portais manuelinos. Nalguns destes podem ver-se símbolos esculpidos e, na ombreira do lado direito, pequenas fendas escavadas utilizadas no culto hebraico. Desça novamente à praça central, podendo ver, na Rua Mouzinho da Silveira, a casa onde viveu este estadista e legislador da revolução liberal de 1820. Antes de deixar a vila poderá ainda visitar a pequena e bonita Igreja de S. Roque (séc. XV) [7], com galilé (entrada coberta), nave, capela-mor e vestígios interiores de pinturas, integrada na fortaleza abaluartada construída em 1705, e o miradouro [8], ali perto, com deslumbrantes vistas sobre a paisagem alentejana e Espanha. Durante a tarde, e após o almoço, saia de Castelo de Vide e conheça a envolvente, entrando na N246-1 em direção a Alpalhão. Vire à esquerda quando encontrar a seta ou indicação de Nossa Senhora da Penha e entre na estrada M1008 que o leva até ao miradouro com capela, de onde vislumbrará uma vista de 360º the same period, the Castle fortification to which battlements were added in the XVII century, and also the countless Manueline portals. In the afternoon, and after lunch, leave Castelo de Vide and get to know the surroundings entering the N246 -1 in the direction of Alpalhão. Turn left when you find a sign to N. Sra. da Penha and join the road M1008 which will take you to the viewpoint with a chapel,

sobre o Alentejo. Volte a descer, retome a estrada para Alpalhão e vire na segunda seta que indicar Barragem da Póvoa e Meadas. Irá fazer um percurso que o levará à barragem. Pare, passeie e aprecie a paisagem da albufeira. Continue até chegar à vila alentejana da Póvoa e Meadas. Atravesse-a até ao largo do Espírito Santo, onde virará à direita seguindo a seta que diz Meada 9,2 Km. Ande 6,5 Km e encontra a indicação para o Menir da Meada (cerca de 1,5 Km), o maior da Península Ibérica. Volte para trás e retome a estrada em direção à Beirã, que o levará, ao fim da tarde, à Pousada de Marvão.

from where you will have a view of 360º over the Alentejo. Go back down, retake the road to Alpalhão and turn at the second sign which indicates “Barragem da Póvoa e Meadas (dam)”. You will take a route which will take you to the dam. Stop, have a walk and appreciate the landscape of the reservoir. Carry on until you reach the Alentejan village of Póvoa e Meadas. Go through it until the Espírito Santo Square (Largo), where you will turn right following the sign which says “Meada” at 9.2 Km. Walk 6.5 Km and find a sign to “Menir (Menhir) da Meada” (around 1.5 Km), the largest in the Iberian Peninsula. Go back, retake the road to Beirã, which will take you at the end of the afternoon to the Pousada de Marvão.
