Little Suite (1991–92)
for flute/recorder and guitar
Dur. 16′
NOTE
The five movements of “The Little Suite” were written for flute/recorder and guitar from 1991 – 92 .The work belongs to the lighter part of the composer’s production. It is written in the classical tradition, both in form and contents, however clearly belonging to the 20th century.
The suite has a distinct character through its melodic themes and untraditional elements. A cheerful prelude sets the general tone – based on a church mode (lydian).
The second movement “Valse Solitaire” is in a more melancholic mood. The 14-year old composer had soaked up inspiration by spending a holiday walking alone in Paris, hence the French tone.
A temporary climax is reached in the third movement, “Greek Delight”. The name is a play on words on the sweets Turkish Delight. The movement is a lively and cheerful dance in a syncopated rhythm (3⁄4 followed by 2+3 quavers). The composer had a great love for Greece and Greek culture, being the inspiration for this movement.
The fourth movement is the emotional climax with its slow relentlessly progressive pulse and a long legato melody giving the flautist rich opportunity for interpretation and development. It is a lament for the composer’s mother, who died while he was doing his national service in Cyprus.
“Finale”, the last movement, is a strong contrast to the previous. The ring is circled from the initial prelude and provides a sparkling and festive ending.
Dr. Rachel Smith, flute and Paul Gregory, guitar have kindly provided suggestions regarding the score and fingering. Paul Gregory has played the piece with various flautists and is responsible for the first performance in Chapel Royal, Brighton, in 2008. Paul Gregory has likewise recorded it for the composer’s CD in 2015.
