Dear Readers & Contributors, Welcome to the "Best of Instagram Most Rated" December ISSUE. How can it possibly be the end of the year already? It feels like we missed half of it. Yet so much happened this year. It has been a year filled with hardship and pain... I choose on the good... The many ways EDITH MAGAZINE rose to the challenges.

It's been a pleasure reading messages and emails who love the direction we are going and that's gratifying to hear. But of course when contributors are unhappy, it's also on my shoulder as well..

We were thinking how to end this year with EDITH MAGAZINE for our beautiful readers and participants. Something memorable and also a way for us to thank you for choosing EDITH MAGAZINE. Without further a due I present you with Best of Instagram Most rated. The issue where all the photos/series with more than 500 likes for the year 2020 on our Instagram are presented to you.

I wish I could add you all in this issue but that would've turned into an encyclopedia rather (laughs). Although we did think of having an editors pick issue....

EDITH: Hello Ahmad, can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

I am Ahmad Reza Torabkhani, a photographer and videographer born in the winter, in Tehran. With two sisters and three brothers, I am the youngest in an artistic family very much supported by our parents.

EDITH: What led you to choose photography and videography as a job?

One of my friends, who works in the modeling and photography industry, asked me to become a face model. That is how I entered the modeling world, which in turn led me to discover an innate interest in photography - I bought a high-quality camera soon after.

I experienced many ups and downs in this job, but I never lose hope to catch the acme of success and I am grateful to earn money this way.

EDITH: What makes you happy when you shoot?

When I hold the camera in my hands, I subconsciously enter the world of photography. New ideas, creating new methods of modeling photography, and the successes that happen to me make me feel particularly different and happy.

EDITH: How critical are you with yourself and your work?

I am very critical of myself; my goal is always to beat my latest work and do better.

EDITH: How is living in your country related to art?

My country, Iran, is the cradle of art, and you know my work here. I had a lot of experiences working in different countries and I created different effects within each of them. I most certainly welcome traveling to new places because it allows me to experi-

ence something new and in turn create new ideas as well.

EDITH: How do you prepare for a photoshoot?

Do you always have the same team?

I do all the photography, videography, montage, and helicopter shooting alone and get everything editor by a professional editor I work closely with. I certainly always welcome new ideas from potential team members.

EDITH: How do you want to improve yourself in art?

I want to improve my art by trying to create the best works compared to my colleagues in this field and thus reach the peak of success.

EDITH: What are your best quality and your worst default and how do you overcome them to produce the best work?

A sense of perfection and being the best in my job is one of my good qualities that guides me on the path of my goal. As a critique of myself, dissatisfaction with my latest work is my worst default, which of course I think will however only help me further in my career.

EDITH: What inspires you?

My innate love for the art of photography and living beautiful, quality moments inspire me all the time.

EDITH: What is your take on art today?

Art is developing more and more in the world and it has become an industry in which I am trying to expand my artistic responsibility to make art more accessible to the public.

EDITH: Do you have a last word for our readers?

Art has no limits to progress. It is something instinctive that must be discovered. I started from scratch and I never put an end to my progress. I start working every day with new ideas. Have the courage to pursue new ideas and do not be afraid to work.

EDITH: You team up with your wife for makeup - has it always been the case and is it easier to work with someone close to you ?

RAY: I can say I work with my wife for about 85% of my photoshoots. Makeup on the mode/subject in my opinion, completes the look. No one needs makeup, but it is a nice touch. If you look closely, when anyone goes on TV male/female, they apply makeup. Throughout the world, anyone on set or even for music videos always gets makeup applied. This has been an influence on our process.

It's part of the experience we offer to our clients. People love it, get dolled up and finish it with a photoshoot.

When my wife and I met, we were not photographers or makeup artists. This is something we eventually learned and pursued separately and then blended together. I have worked with other makeup artists, but there is this cool gratifying feeling to create art with your partner. We see things alike and sometimes differently and I believe that is what makes us stronger. The Dynamic Duo. EDITH: Does the place you live in influence the way you work ?

RAY: I'm a big believer in using your location as your canvas. Every little corner counts! You'd be surprised how you can transform a shoot location with lighting and angles. With that being said, YES, I believe that where you live is a big influence on the way you work.

EDITH: Is there any place in the world you would like to be in, to live or to create and why ?

RAY: We travel frequently for commissioned photoshoots. We would both love to travel the world more, doing what we love. Photographing different people, in different cities/countries. Sometimes I find myself in awe of other photographers' work from around the world. For example: How I would love to work with a model in Bali, while someone in Bali would love to work with a model and some snow falling.

EDITH: What are your next plans ? Do you have a message for Edith's readers in these uncertain times?

RAY: I'm going to bring my creativity to another level.

After a while you just want to strive for better. My goal is to make each photo I create better than the last. To the readers, keep working. Keep being inspired, we are our own tough critics. You are your only competition. Don't get dissolved into the gear or the items you think you rounds Ray when he snaps colorful shots and unleashes his need. Work with what you have. Mermaids, Dragons, & Photography Catching up with Canada’s own fairy tale photographer

Photographer and self-proclaimed mermaid at heart Therena Carlin lives in a world of art and fantasy that she created with a lens and a dream. Entering this world is like entering another universe, and her art paints a picture of romanticism and ethereal beauty that you can only find in antique picture frames. The British Columbian photographer allowed us an interview so that we, too, could become part of her world.

EDITH: What is it like being a photographer based in British Columbia? What is your favorite thing to shoot in your town?

THERENA: Honestly, I live in paradise. We have the best and mildest weather in all of Canada and I live two minutes from the ocean. As a mermaid at heart I love seeing the ocean on a daily basis any time I have to run any errands or drive kids between sports.

EDITH: What drove you to pick up a camera and what drives you every day to shoot?

THERENA: It wasn’t until my third pregnancy with my daughter and getting my own professional photos taken that I had a spark of inspiration that this was what I wanted to do with my life. I knew I wanted to create art, and empower women, so portraits were the natural path for me. I discovered mentors like Sue Bryce and Brooke Shaden early on in my career, their philosophies of empowerment, creating art and passionately following your calling have driven me to be the best artist I can be and to be able to use my art to empower and uplift others no matter their age, size, race or background.

EDITH: Tell us a fun fact about you we don’t know.

EDITH: I see you’re going back to your roots and focusing on makeup and beauty close ups in your studio – why this sudden change? What led you to want to explore these styles again?

One thing is for certain – British Columbia’s mermaid photographer is only just getting started, and her artistic skills continue to grow and evolve every day. EDITH: How do you use makeup to express yourself and to heighten your art?

EDITH: Your work has lot of soft undertones and lighting that really accentuates your models in an ethereal way – how did you come to shoot in this style?

THERENA: I have recently discovered strobe lighting and learned how to sculpt with light. I love playing with shadows as much as with light, and find myself drawn to dramatic lighting over soft lighting. I feel my art becoming more dramatic and moody as I explore light more and more. I love earthy and organic undertones. Perhaps it’s the druid in me that wants to connect to nature within my art, or perhaps I am simply trying to bring my focus back to the subject.

EDITH: You seem to love monochromatic colors and art – why is that?

THERENA: I love monochromatic images because I feel that there is less to distract from the story the image is trying to tell. To me, colour is a distraction, too much of it and it takes away from the art, giving your eye too much to process. But if you pay careful attention to the tones you use, you can use colour to create part of the story, the mood, and help you get the image’s message across.

EDITH: What about colored gels intrigues you so much and what do you love about working with them the most?

THERENA: To me coloured gels are quite new as I have only had them for about five months. Part of what I love is the new process of learning and experimenting. But, it also has a way

EDITH: Describe the way you see the world/how is this reflected through your lens?

THERENA: I see the world through my emotions and experiences, and now also the emotions and experiences of the women who step in front of my lens. For my professional work I focus on the beauty I see in each and every person. I love showing your everyday woman that she too is beautiful and that she is a masterpiece.

EDITH: I saw on your page a quote by Coco Chanel, “The most beautiful thing a woman can wear is her smile.” What about your job helps you to empower women every day?

THERENA: As mentioned before, I specialize in women’s portraiture, from maternity to glamour and boudoir. When my clients come to me I give them a full celebrity makeover and photoshoot experience, where I hire a professional hair and makeup artist so they look and feel their best and then guide them through set ups and wardrobe changes. In that moment, when they are at their most vulnerable in front of my

cover not only the beauty I see within them, but a reason to love themselves again.

Therena’s dedication to showcasing women’s beauty is not only admirable, it’s extremely important. This aspiration to show beauty in every form has gained Therena a number of artistic publications and editorial spreads in magazines such as Edith, Evon, and iMirage Magazine.

EDITH: What has been your favorite publication shoot to date? Why? THERENA: This is a hard one as I only recently started submitting work for publication. Each one so far has been an experimental session of playing and pushing my skills to new limits from lighting to makeup. But if I had to choose my favourite themes are definitely the warrior, mermaid and fantasy themes which were published in Edith magazine.

EDITH: When shooting for publication what are the top three tips that you keep in mind? lens, they become the most important person in the room, and I build up their confidence in themselves and help them dis-

THERENA: I try to submit images from different perspect ives, close up (beauty /makeup shot), shoulder, portrait, and

full body, (though I rarely shoot below the knees unless I do a fashion shoot with my designer – or shoot a mermaid). I also try to elicit different emotions in each image through the posing and lighting, adding and removing props, and sometimes simply by editing with different effects and overall tines.

EDITH: Do you have any advice for novice photographers looking to get published?

THERENA: Tell a story – shoot things that you love and start with just creating art you want to create. Don’t be afraid of submitting, eventually your technical skill will be good enough and it will happen! The best thing you can get is feedback/critique if you don’t get accepted. Take what you are told and learn from it. That is what I did. From a technical stand point try different expressions and different poses.

Change up the lighting, and if you are studio based as I am, change the way you edit to enhance the overall mood of the image and so that it doesn’t look like the same photo in each shot; but make it look cohesive. Walk around your subject, you never know what masterpiece lies just 30 cm on the other side of your model!

the state of your community there for readers based in other countries?

THERENA: I am very fortunate to live where I do. My country is very proactive and I know that people in my community have also responded quite proactively with self-isolation. It is a small town of only 38,000 and we are spaced quite far apart for the most part.

EDITH: As an artist, what are you doing right now to keep yourself sane and your creative side fulfilled during the quarantine?

THERENA: I have so many creative projects that have been on my to-do list for so long. Creating large scale props for future sessions, working on a novel I am writing, painting, drawing and learning how to sew are just a few of the things on my list. Plus I still have some images that I have not edited yet so I am definitely not lacking in creative things to do!

EDITH: What can we as consumers of art and media do right now to help you, and other artists in our communities, during this time of hardship?

EDITH: I see that you’ve challenged yourself to be accepted THERENA: Follow us on social media, share and purchase into as many international publications as possible – care to our work, like and comment on any images that move or resshare that list and highlight a few of your favorites? onate with you, share a favourite image in your story. For artists it is about being seen right now. Maybe you love our THERENA: Honestly right now I am just creating content I work, maybe you don’t, but you may know someone who will love and trying to match it to magazines that I feel would resresonate with it. To finish off my time with Therena I wanted to touch on the heavy topic weighing on all of our minds these days: COVID-19. No interview can be done without mentioning the pandemic, seeing as it’s affecting everyone around the globe. Local artists and freelancers have been particularly affected work-wise, so I wanted to get Therena’s take on this as a photographer.

EDITH: How has the global pandemic affected your business as a photographer? What steps have you had to take to keep yourself and your clients safe?

THERENA: I have had to reschedule all of my clients booked within at least two months and my husband and I are homebound. The best way I am keeping clients and my family safe is by not working directly with them at this time.

EDITH: Being based in British Columbia can you describe

Justice unveiled For as long as I could remember I have been fascinated by ancient history and religions, especially the Ancient Greek Pantheon. In this series, I wanted to portray the Goddess of Justice, Astraea.

In mythology and art, she is often portrayed as a veiled goddess holding the scales and sword of justice. That is because ‘justice’ is supposed to be unbiased, neutral and blind to normal prejudices. In our time she has become the symbol of our own justice system.

However, unlike the goddess, our justice systems are rarely blind to prejudice and bias.

And so, her veil has been removed to reveal her all-seeing sight between right and wrong.

In my interpretation, this saddens the goddess as it saddens me and so you can see her mourn this betrayal. Yet, she still executes the law, no matter how unjustly dealt. And in the end, it leaves her hands stained with the guilt of the injustice of the world.
