ANNOUNCEMENTS FALL PICTURE DAY – Was your child absent on Picture Day? Individual makeups wlll be taken in October. BLUE DOG GIFT SALES – All Blue Dog orders are due October 1st. Orders will be delivered on October 24th VIRGINIA AVENUE DROP OFF -Please do not park in the drop off zone in front of the school at drop off or pick up. We are trying to have the City correct the signage because the zone in front of the school should have NO PARKING during the posted hours. Think of this area as if it were the loading zone at LAX – for the immediate loading and unloading of passengers – minus the endless loop of the recorded reminders! NO ONE SHOULD PARK IN THE DROP OFF ZONE AND LEAVE THEIR CAR. If you arrive to pick up your child before their dismissal time, we will ask you to circle the block. When parents park in the loading zone it snarls traffic all up and down Virginia Avenue, forces other parents to double park, and creates very unsafe conditions for children. Please cooperate with our hardworking valets – Ofelia and Sergio Rodriguez – and act to protect the safety of all Edison students. KID BIZ TRAINING FOR PARENTS – Friday, October 10 at 8:30 am in the computer lab, we’ll offer an orientation to this Spanish and English reading program for grades 2-5. FRIDAY FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT: FROZEN – PTA and the Kinder Committee are presenting the movie Frozen on Friday evening October 10 at 5:00 pm There will be no admission charged at this movie night since we had technical difficulties at the spring presentation of Frozen and promised a rain check. The Kinder Committee will be offering a hot dog dinner and treats for sale. Children are invited to come in costume (either from the movie Frozen or in their Halloween Costume). The movie will be held in the Edison cafeteria.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: FOCUS – A CRITICAL THINKING SKILL FOR SCHOOL SUCCESS You don’t have to work with children for very long to know that there is tremendous variability in their ability to focus and pay attention. Of course there are differences by age, but some children can attentively listen to instructions, start tasks without multiple reminders, and sustain energy and attention until the task is completed. Others of the same age can struggle to attend to instruction or directions, fuss and procrastinate about beginning an assignment, and really struggle to stay with a task until it’s done. Homework in some homes is a breeze and in others, it’s a battle. There can be several different reasons why children seem to struggle with focus and attention. Research suggests that there is a hereditary tendency for attention difficulties, but not all problems with focus indicate ADHD. Emotional distractions (stress, trauma, anxiety or depression) can impair focus and attention and interfere with learning. When attention skills are underdeveloped, it makes it hard for a child to control his or her impulses, maintain focus, and hold information in his or her working memory. It’s not really the case that a child can’t pay attention – it’s that he or she can’t pay attention to what you want them to pay attention to. It’s easy for a parent to think that their child has strong attention skills when they can be intently absorbed in reading, playing with legos, playing video games, etc. But the challenge is being able to maintain focus and attention on non-preferred tasks. Increasingly, research indicates that weak attention skills can be strengthened and stretched through deliberate instruction and practice in keeping ones brain quiet. Strengthening weak attention skills usually results in dramatic improvement in behaviors typically associated with ADD or AD/HD. We’re fortunate this year to have some additional resources on campus to help us learn more about how to support children with weak attention skills. The UCLA School Function Program (SFP), co-directed by Developmental Pediatrician and researcher Dr. Alica Kuo and Social Worker Bobby Verdugo, is working with us this year on counseling, parent education, teacher consultation, and individual consultations for parents who have concerns about their children’s attention skills. On selected Monday afternoons, the SFP will be offering clinic dates at Edison from 1:00-4:00 p.m There will be opportunities for 3-4 families to consult with a developmental pediatrician about attention concerns. If you think you would like to take advantage of one of these clinics, please contact Yoly Gutierrez so we can get an idea of how many slots we’ll need to schedule. And watch for upcoming parent workshops so we can learn more together about attention challenges and promising practices.
