2012 iD Dunedin Fashion Week iD Dunedin Fashion Week has once again secured its place as an international must-see fashion event with a host of high profile New Zealand fashion designers joining global acts and emerging talent at this year’s 13th annual show. The Otago Farmer’s Market The stall vendors, buskers, coffee and breakfast stalls, all present a unique “village-like” experience where you will find the very best fresh fruit and produce that Otago has to offer. Fresh fruit from Central Otago, vegetables and berries from the Taieri plains; every week over 65 different vendors come together from all over the province to create one of the busiest Farmers Markets in Australasia. Queen of the Castle Cargill’s Castle is perched in pride of place on the cliffs above St Clair. It was built in 1876 and became a place of parties and balls until it was deemed unstable in 1974. Since then it has fallen into a state of decay, but Cargill’s Castle Trust is working to preserve this icon of the St Clair skyline. Dunedin Light was invited to visit the castle recently and despite a spooky encounter with the resident ghost ... I mean goat, managed to get some great images. The images that ran in the Dunedin Light report elicited a huge response from others who had a Cargill’s Castle tale of their own to tell. What’s yours? Harley heaven February 17-19, Dunedin was home to over 900 Harley Davidsons here for the 22nd New Zealand National Hog Rally. Each year, one of New Zealand’s six Hog chapters hosts the rally, attracting about 1000 members from throughout New Zealand and overseas. The rumbling could be heard right across the city as the Thunder Ride on Saturday 18 saw the Harleys band together in a procession around Dunedin. On their way through the Octagon, the Harleys were greeted by a pipe band guard of honour. The Edgar Centre was the activity hub for the Hog Ralley, with functions and displays held right through the weekend.

If you hadn’t noticed, owning a classic car has become an increasingly popular past-time and it’s not just the blokes who are becoming involved. In Dunedin some of the main events are the annual runs to Brighton, The Autospectacular show and The USA Day, to name a few of many events now held to cater for all tastes. Single-make clubs and organisations catering for every purpose from classic motor racing to touring and rallies abound and are easy to locate on the internet. If you are contemplating buying a classic car, then be warned. Any sort of mechanical work can be expensive and if it is a rare classic, then you have to know where to look for those hard-to-get parts. If your classic happens to have trim or upholstery, or bodywork issues then the repair bill can be quite staggering. 4 Exclusive

Long-time classic car owners, restorers David & Christine Mehrtens are heavily involved in all facets of the classic car scene from organising the Mainland Classic Tour every two-years for the past 20-years, to involvement with one-make registers such as the TR (Triumph) register and the Mercedes Benz Club. Operating out of Mehrtens KwikFit in Bond Street, Dunedin, the premises has become a Mecca for those seeking

those hard to get parts as well as complete rebuilds of classic cars. Recent cars in the shop under restoration included a 2-year-long, ground-up restoration of a Triumph TR250 sports car and parked in a corner was one of the rare “Bergerac” Triumph Roadsters from the late 1940s. David and Christine drive their own Triumph cars on many events and enjoy mixing with like-minded people from all walks of life with a common interest, their classic cars. “I enjoy being around people like that. They are dedicated petrol-heads in this red-neck part of the country,” David said tongue-in-cheek. His mother reckoned he was born with a steering wheel in his hand, he said. David imports parts from many sources in England and the USA for clients throughout New Zealand, but it is getting more and more expensive to get the parts shipped in. “There are more and more parts available for many classics, but you have to be very careful about the quality of the parts and where you get them from,” he said. since 2003, is the “Autumn Colours Outing” on 21-22 April next. Starting outside “The Shop” in Bond Street, Dunedin, this event travels through to Arrowtown on a different course each time it is held. Each entrant is given comprehensive route instructions to help get to organised food stops over a very social weekend with great scenery and roads. Mazda was known for its innovation and back in the 1970s, its catch phrase was “The more you look, the more you like.” Today its catch cry is “Zoom, Zoom” a phrase as the company says, catches the “emotion of motion” inherent in its cars. In the 1960s the company took up the challenge of developing Felix Wankel’s amazing little rotary, internal combustion engine. It persevered with the rotary and perfected it, to prove the value of the design, as it does today with the popular RX8 models. It won at Le mans in 1991, with a four rotor version of the design, the 787B, the only team from outside Western Europe and the USA to win this race. It was

followed by a decade of huge successes in many events, and continues today. Mazda enjoys an amazingly loyal following and they are still to be seen mainly in RX2/RX3 form in club rallies around New Zealand, its popularity only rivaled by versions of the MX5 sportscar . Dunedin classic car enthusiast Mike Elford’s has what could be one of the best and certainly one of the most original Mazda RX4s around. In bright red with a predominantly white vinyl interior and sporting that distinctive Mazda nose, this is no shrinking violet and fair screams “take me for a drive”. Mike acquired the Mazda with one or two little blemishes, but you would have to look close to see them. The overall impression is a very original and well looked after classic. “It’s a 1974 model and it was sold new in Wellington. It’s had a couple of Auckland owners and I bought it last year. It’s in original condition and hasn’t been repainted,” Mike said. It doesn’t just sit in the garage either and gets regular use to keep everything working well.

“I try to give it out every weekend and it’s just great to drive. It’s almost like new. No rattles and everything works fine. I really like the white interior. You don’t see white interiors in many of the examples that came to New Zealand. The interior is unmarked and there are still the factory plastic covers over a lot of the interior trim,” he said. With a little over 42,000km on the odometer, this RX4 is in quite exception condition It’s now stored in Central Otago to take advantage of the drier climate and to preserve its condition away from Dunedin’s salty sea breezes. “It’s in great condition with a few little bits which may require attention later, but at the moment it doesn’t need any work. I just love driving it any chance I get. It‘s quite surprising the attention it gets from young people. It‘s quite a head turner,” Mike said. Definitely a useable classic cruiser with plenty of performance, and it will be right in its element on Central Otago’s roads. Treat yourself to the Tiakina The Twin Screw Power Vessel Tiakina is a 1950’s British made, commercial wooden boat initially commisioned as a pilot boat for the Wellington Harbour Board, and was one of the only vessels to make it to the Wahine before she sank in 1968. Lindon and Paula Colloty stumbled upon it at Port Chalmers in 2008 and fell in love immediately. Paella Mixta by Jared Gee of G cuisine @ Cilantro Ingredients

Serves 4-6

4tbsp olive oil 1 clove crushed garlic 4 diced shallots 1-2 chicken thighs sliced into 1cm cubes 1 chorizo or your favourite specialty sausage, sliced ½ tbsp fresh rosemary and thyme - chopped fine ¼ tsp smoked sweet paprika 2ltr good quality chicken stock .2gm saffron threads 250gm callasparra rice (medium grain) 150gm fresh firm fish fillet cut into 1 inch pieces 3 fresh sliced tomatoes, seeds removed 1 roasted red capsicum, peeled and sliced ½ cup peas ¼ cup cannelini beans 1kg mixed seafood - mussels, clams, scallops, prawns etc 1/3 cup fresh chopped flat leaf parsley Fresh ground pepper and natural seasalt Juice of ½ a lemon

In a preheated Paella pan add the olive oil with garlic and shallots, sweat for 3-4 minutes. Add chicken to brown then the chorizo, rosemary and paprika, stir through for 1 min. Add the tomato, beans, peas and capsicum, cook for 2 mins then pour over hot chicken stock and saffron. Bring to a gentle simmer then rain the rice into pan ensuring even distribution; lightly season at this point. Once your rice is in you no longer stir the dish, this helps create the prized caramelised soccorat base in the pan. Return to simmer and let gently cook for 4-5 min or till the rice becomes transparent and most of the liquid has been absorbed. Arrange your seafood attractively on the top of your pan. Cover with a lid or foil to help the final addition cook with steam for a few minutes. When shells have opened, remove lid/foil. Finish with a final seasoning, fresh lightly chopped parsley, olive oil and a squeeze of lemon. Leave to rest for 5 min then serve straight from the pan with a fresh salad and crusty bread.
