The Lifestyle & Rural Update May 2018

Getting ready for Winter Daylight saving is over and the evenings are closing in. With Winter just around the corner and grass growth slowing down, now is a good time to tick a few things off the list and make sure you are prepared for the Winter ahead. If you are lightly stocked, you may find you will get through till Spring on grass only. Even with this being the case, having some substitute feed on hand is always wise to have, in the event of a snowfall or flood. Ration your grass if possible by break feeding, this will ensure your stock will regularly get fresh grass. Substitute feed - if you don’t already have a supplier for hay or baylage then you should source one sooner rather than later. Have a look on Trademe or give us a call and we can steer you in the right direction. Another excellent winter feed is sheep nuts, these are high in nutrition and generally are readily available from local stock firms. As mentioned, be prepared and have your winter feed stored and ready rather than battling with availability and price in the heart of winter. If you are wintering cattle, it may be a good idea to use a feeder for your baylage or hay, this will ensure that more of your feed gets eaten and not wasted. The feeder should be placed in a dry part of the paddock, to stop the ground around it becoming a bog.

New Vets in town Murrays Veterinary would like to introduce to you all and extend a warm welcome to our two new Vets Emma and Maeva. Emma Shaw started at Murrays Veterinary Clinic on the 9th of April as a new graduate from Massey University. Emma grew up on a sheep and deer farm in Waitahuna, she is loving being back in the neighbourhood.

Maeva Guyomar has been with us since the start of April. She graduated with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science from Queensland University and has been working as a mixed animal Veterinarian in Young, NSW for the last four years.

She is enjoying learning all aspects of mixed animal practice but has a real passion for sheep health. She is looking forward to working alongside our farmers to grow productivity over the coming months.

Maeva and her husband have moved from Australia to Mosgiel as he took up a veterinary position with OSPRI. They are enjoying the lifestyle Mosgiel offers and as time permits, they are exploring the greater Dunedin area.

Currently she is renting in Mosgiel, she is a bit gutted her sheepdog preferred being back on the farm rather than living with her in Mosgiel, but has many friends in Dunedin and is fitting in with the team really well.

She has found the last few weeks busy, but very exciting treating the wide variety of large and small animals that we see at Murrays Veterinary Clinic. Maeva is working fulltime, rotating with our other vets for evening clinics and emergency afterhours.

Emma is eager to help and is keen to meet you the next time she is on farm, or when you’re in the clinic with your pets.

Give her a kiwi gidday when you meet her!

Murrays Veterinary Clinic is a well-established mixed animal practice located on the Taieri Plains. They offer open clinics every morning between 9 and 10am and again in the evenings from Monday to Thursday 7 to 7.30pm. No appointment is required for open clinics. All other times call the clinic 489 5540 to make an appointment.

Thinking of selling? Call the Lifestyle and Rural team. We get results.
