here are a variety of nuances that go into building a lakefront home, and having an experienced builder is key to ensuring a truly functional design.

John Shramek of Arjay Builders, along with his wife, Tammy of Classic Interiors, have been designing and building homes for more than 30 years. Their current home at Newport Landing on Bennington Lake showcases their knowledge for creating an upscale transitional style.

The couple built the 7,500 sq. ft. four-bedroom ranch home in 2017, which is their third home in this subdivision. They originally purchased 32 lots on Bennington Lake and currently have seven lots left. Each home they build is completely custom with prices ranging from $600,000 to $6 million and is done so with the ultimate attention to quality and craftsmanship. John said it’s very different building in a lake subdivision than regular subdivisions.

You want to take into account features such as floor to ceiling windows to maximize views and even the exterior materials you put on the house. “Every lake home we build is functional for lake living,” he said.

The current home’s floor plan was designed so that every space would be utilized, which the Shrameks said they absolutely do. They eliminated the unnecessary areas often found in other homes, such as multiple kitchens, a formal living room, and a formal dining room. The ranch works perfectly with their empty nest lifestyle and is comfortable, whether it’s just the two of them or if they are entertaining. “We love the usability and livability of this house,” Tammy said. “For just the two of us living here, there’s no wasted space.”

There are some truly unique features of the home that John said he originally included for his own needs, and now they’ve become a regular request with clients. One in particular is the climate-controlled grill room. He can access it either off the covered deck, which allows him to still interact with guests during the warmer months, or he can access it from the garage, so he doesn’t have to go outdoors during the colder months. The deck also has builtin heaters, a fireplace, and is off-set from the kitchen so that the lake views out the large kitchen windows aren’t blocked.

Another feature is the “reverse concept” home theater in the lower level.

Unlike traditional home theaters, that are separate rooms, this one is situated in the main living space but uses a rear-screen projector that is housed in a smaller room behind the built-in screen.

The room can still be darkened by lowering the window shades in the room, but serves as a more usable, transitional space. Off this room is the bar and hot tub room—the Shrameks’ favorite part of the house. Designed with a

Common back-to-school challenges in children

The new school year is already here and summer has flown by like always.

When you think back to last year, maybe your child had challenges with any of the following: Reading speed, reading comprehension, handwriting, concentration, sitting still, behavior, or sensory processing. Any one of these will no doubt make the school year and homework harder than it needs to be. Or maybe they have an official diagnosis that makes school harder for them: ADHD, Dyslexia, OCD, SPD, ASD, Tourette’s, etc.

There is one thing I consistently see in all kids struggling with these challenges: They still have their Primitive Reflexes. These are reflexes we are born with and they help us survive the first few months of life. By about 6 months old, these reflexes should go away, and the brain can continue to develop and do more complex things.

The brain grows from the bottom up: from the brainstem, to the midbrain, and finally to the frontal cortex which is known as our “academic brain.” That’s where we are able to develop higher level intelligence, use logic, and excel in school.

Primitive reflexes live at the area of the brainstem. If you or your child still have their primitive reflexes, it’s a direct window into the brain saying the lower level brainstem hasn’t developed or matured to its fullest ability. And because the brain grows from the bottom up, if the brainstem hasn’t developed properly, there’s no way the academic brain can develop to its fullest.

I’ve seen kids and adults of all ages with retained primitive reflexes, there is no set age where they automatically go away.

There are several different primitive reflexes that can contribute to a variety of symptoms. Anything from the ability to sit still and concentrate to eyetracking and reading comprehension.

reflexes can remediate and go away in a reasonable amount of time.

If someone would ask you about the most pervasive home décor trends of the late 80s and 90s, wallpaper would likely come to mind. Now wall coverings are back, in a big way, and they aren’t displaying the same design elements of yesteryear. Bold, graphic prints, metallic and geometrics are showing up on wall covering everywhere. In fact, according to stylecaster. com, people are searching for “bold print wallpaper” on Pinterest 401 percent more frequently than they have in years past. The interior designers at Interiors Joan and Associates have outlined their five favorite wall covering trends:

Metallics: Whether it’s a subtle sheen created by a metallic thread woven into a grass-cloth wall covering, or a bold statement of grandeur with mica fragments, 1mm glass beads applied in pattern, mother of pearl overlay or even metal sheeting wall tiles, metallic elements are all the rage. This sparkle is best applied in areas to peak the viewer’s interest, such as a ceiling coffer or a powder bath where a little shine goes a long way!

Pattern embossed: Some wall coverings feature an embossed pattern that gives them the appearance of crocodile skin, or other intricate textures. This adds a luxe feel to otherwise plain walls, elevating the style of the room.

Wood veneer: Ultra-thin strips of wood paper are arranged in various patterns, such as sunbursts or other geometric designs and then applied to the wall. A warm, cozy feel is

created, and it can be adapted to fit both rugged and refined spaces.

Textural: Texture can be created both literally and visually. We are seeing a lot of literal texture being stamped into vinyl wall coverings to create a more sophisticated look for commercial applications. Other recurring trends are the textures created by using natural elements such as hemp and grasses, flocking papers, using cork and mica, and other materials that combine to make an interesting visual collage.

Handmade wall coverings: A local “To The Trade” company creates handmade wall coverings. With a robust portfolio of styles and a knack for customizing with added elements and color ways, this company is a designer’s best friend. There is nothing quite so beautiful as applying a hand made creation to the walls of your space, in its entirety.

Daily Yaymaker brings out the best in our community

ommunity is an essential component to our daily lives, and everyone wants and deserves to feel welcomed and included. That basic concept is at the heart of a new organization in Omaha. Daily Yaymaker offers opportunities for adults with unique needs to attend local events, do some traveling, and enjoy experiences in a safe, appropriate environment. It’s a concept created by Dawna Daily, who for years saw a gap in services and finally followed her heart and faith until it came to fruition.

Daily’s passion for helping those with unique needs started with her own sister who is hearing impaired. Her family lived in Yutan, NE, and she’d often drive with her back and forth to Omaha where her sister attended the Omaha Hearing School. It was through this exposure that Daily developed her strong spirit to advocate for people with disabilities. As an adult, she began her career as a paraprofessional in the high school resource setting, and later decided to go back to school and earn a degree in special education, all while raising two small children at home.

After earning her degree, Daily began working for Elkhorn Public Schools resource program, and after nine years, helped develop the district’s Young Adult program which she directed for another six years. After reaching a point where she felt she’d gone as far as she could with that phase of her career, she decided it was time for another change and accepted a position as the parttime director of the Down Syndrome Association for Families of Nebraska. It was during the midst of these professional changes that a seed was planted in Daily’s mind.

“Every time I was out and about, I never saw groups of people with disabilities at events on the weekends,” Daily said. “Parents would comment that their adult children were socially isolated, but they were worried about their children navigating outings on their own, plus adult children don’t necessarily want to have to bring their parents.” Despite all of the quality daytime programs available, Daily really felt there was a need for outings that allowed people with unique needs to interact with the rest of the community at local events.

“They want to be with everyone else and do what everyone else in the community does,” she added.

It was during a conversation with a friend in which Daily was describing her idea that the name “Daily Yaymaker” was created. Daily’s husband’s family had owned the first grocery store in Elkhorn, and she wanted to bring the name back to the community. She also explained that she wanted to create experiences for individuals that made them say, “Yay!” Her friend paused and said, “You’re the yaymaker.”

Daily Yaymaker officially launched in May with a monthly membership model. The fee includes opportunities to attend up to six events per month and includes transportation to the event and any admission fees associated with the event.

point to let the members be as independent as possible. “I’m there if they need me, but otherwise I encourage them to experience it on their own,” she said.

That includes anyone age 21 and older being able to have alcohol, assuming it’s within their caregivers’ rules. “I talk to parents to find out what their family rules are and to make sure they’re open to having their adult children make their own choices. No one has taken advantage of it so far, and it’s amazing to see them develop as people and not just as students.”

Sheryl Havermann’s 25-year-old daughter, Aleigha, is a Daily Yaymaker member and said it’s been an answer to her prayers. “I tried to encourage her to attend events for individuals with developmental disabilities, but she never wanted to go unless it was with us. It’s been fun to see her smile and look forward to going out where she can interact with everyone.

Now we can’t keep her at home, which as a parent is what you want—for them to live their own life.”

Daily gets input from the members on the types of outings they want to do.

Some have included attending Junkstock, the Demo Derby, a concert at Stir Cove in Council Bluffs, and visiting Adventureland. She also offers individual “Yays” in which she’ll accompany someone one-on-one, which she did recently when a member wanted to go camping but their parents weren’t able to do it on their own. With her experience in special education, she’ll also help families with transition consultation and adult disability paperwork. “If you need me for anything, I’m here,” she said.

Her next venture is to launch a non-profit called The Daily House, which will be a respite bed and breakfast for those who need a temporary break or a retreat for parents and those

entering and exiting the foster care system. It would also provide work opportunities for differently abled individuals who could participate in the caretaking, housekeeping, and morning coffee service, as well as other areas. It’s all part of what Daily calls “inspired belongings,” ideas that aren’t written down but just keep coming through.

One of her goals is to establish different chapters throughout the state.

She also has a “Yay it forward” program, where someone can donate to cover the cost for a member. A good member fit is anyone who wants to get out into the community, make and maintain friendships, and have new experiences.

“Everyone deserves to be treated like an individual, be heard, and welcome,” Daily said. “Being part of the larger community is so important, and I want these individuals to learn from the best in our community.”

These events are critical to connect the community facing these diseases and the funds raised create an empowering opportunity to drive our mission forward so we can put an end to Crohn’s and colitis.

Chef Keuper grew up in a military family, which provided ample opportunity to try foods from around the world.

Many of Keuper’s dishes have an Asian flavor profile, and he frequently experiments with distinctive spices, resulting in compelling flavor combinations. He likens his approach to jazz in that it comprises a mix of styles, largely circumventing the notion of rules. Each plate provides a blank canvas on which to use a palette of colors and flavors to surprise and delight diners’ palates. A graduate of Omaha Gross High School, Keuper pursued a bachelor’s degree but ultimately followed his heart, attending culinary school and notching global experiences that featured stints at Michelin starred restaurants in Germany and time with famed Los Angeles chef Nobu Matsuhisa. On Friday, September 6, 2019, Shadow Ridge Country Club will host the 2nd Annual Shadow Ridge Music Festival. The only one of its kind in West Omaha, this all-ages show will feature alternative rock legends Violent Femmes, critically acclaimed and Grammy award winning rockers Soul Asylum, and platinum selling alt pop trailblazer Matthew Sweet. Shadow Ridge General Manager Justin Shanahan is the owner and founder of Shadow Ridge Productions, which is the production company responsible for the annual Shadow Ridge Music Festival. A fan of live music, especially outdoor “festival-type” shows, he wanted to share his club’s outdoor venue with all of West Omaha. “People have a preconceived notion of what it means to be a ‘Country Club’ and Shadow Ridge is different from that in a lot of respects,” he said. “We strive to be an inclusive family recreation and entertainment venue. An annual Music Festival seems to be a natural fit with who we are.”

With 5,000 in attendance at last year’s show, West Omaha is eager for live music and serves as a good compliment to an already thriving music scene across the city. “By hosting the Shadow Ridge Music Festival, I believe we are showing that West Omaha is a cool part of town to live in and a viable location for entertainment venues and events that have traditionally been reserved for midtown and downtown,” Shanahan said. “We are expanding the footprint of live music in our town, which is a great thing.”

Shanahan chose this year’s bands because they were some of his favorites growing up and wanted to create a sense of nostalgia for people. His hope is to continue to grow the festival each year and create a great experience. “I hope it enables people to re-live a bit of their youth for a night.”

Special planning for special needs

J

ust as caring for a family member with special needs requires extra effort, so does estate planning for families with a special needs beneficiary. There is more to consider than nominating a guardian to care for their physical well-being. Careful planning is necessary to properly provide for the financial well-being of a special needs beneficiary.

Government assistance programs generally provide the most significant role in providing financial support for individuals with disabilities.

Programs such as Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security Disability Insurance, Supplemental Security Income, and Veteran’s Benefits may provide assistance for basic living expenses and limited health care coverage. However, certain of these programs are means-tested; that is, eligibility for benefits is based in part on the value of the applicant’s assets.

If their assets exceed the allowable amount, the applicant will be required to spend-down their assets before they are eligible to receive government benefits. If they have already qualified and are receiving government benefits, but subsequently receive an inheritance, an otherwise well-intentioned benefactor may inadvertently cause the beneficiary to lose their eligibility for benefits.

Parents and grandparents who want to avoid causing a break in benefits for their special needs beneficiary have a better alternative than disinheriting them or leaving assets to another family member and hoping he or she will use the assets to benefit the special needs individual. Instead, they should 44 |

establish a third-party special needs trust.

A third-party special needs trust is a trust that is established by someone other than the beneficiary to hold assets that never belonged to the beneficiary, such as assets that parents or grandparents own and want to pass at their death to their descendants. A responsible trustee is named to manage, protect, and expend the assets for the special needs beneficiary in a way that supplements expenses beyond what government benefits provide. The trustee is specifically directed not to supplant the beneficiary’s government benefits. As long as the beneficiary is not able to directly access the funds in this type of trust, the trust will generally not be counted as an available resource for purposes of determining or maintaining eligibility for government assistance. Additionally, assets remaining in the trust at the beneficiary’s death may be protected from Medicaid estate recovery.

Special needs trusts are valuable tools that may be incorporated into an estate plan to allow for protection of benefits, while also enhancing the quality of life for a beneficiary with special needs.

Kernan’s drive for success began at an early age through sports. Growing up in Lincoln, NE, as the youngest of five children, he played both baseball and football for Lincoln East High School. While team captain at the height of his high school football career, he broke his leg in the very first play of the first game, the day before his 17th birthday. After being told he’d never play football again, he said he wanted it more than ever.

That fueled his rehabilitation, and after turning down a chance to walk on at University of Nebraska-Lincoln, he decided to play football for Nebraska Wesleyan University. But he didn’t just play—he started all four years, was a two-time captain, won two conference championships and even won the Mr. Nebraska Collegiate body building competition his senior year. “I never would have been successful in all those areas if I hadn’t experienced adversity,” he said. “It was my first lesson in persevering.”

After graduating with a degree in Business and an emphasis in Finance, Kernan moved to Los Angeles—a city he’d become enamored with after visiting his sister there. A good friend of his owned a computer tech company, and after working there three weeks, he earned his first promotion. Over the next five years he worked his way to Vice President of Sales, helping the company grow from $8 million in annual revenue to $32 million. He’d go on to accomplish similar feats for dozens of 48 |

other companies before exiting, including three of his own.

“Early in my career in the tech industry I knew I didn’t have the computer background that my colleagues had, so I needed to work harder,” Kernan said. “If we were supposed to make 50 calls a day, I would make 100. With my competitive spirit, if the sales goal was X, I tried to get Z. It kept me highly motivated, setting goals, and sharing in the success of the team.” While all the hard work paid off, it also took its toll, especially the amount of traveling he had to do. Kernan realized the time away from home wasn’t what he wanted for his wife and two young sons. “It was another pivotal life moment, and I needed to do what was best for my family.”

Consulting was a natural next step, which spawned from a speaking engagement Kernan did in 2007 on how to grow your business. Since then he’s written training programs, developed a leadership certification program, and authored two books—all of which, when coupled with his experience, makes him uniquely equipped as a business coach. “I’ve been through all of the ups and downs that small businesses face and have had the big successes too,” he said. “As a consultant on the outside 50 |

looking in, I’m able to clearly see what needs to be done. Everyone needs encouragement, and sometimes they need a kick in the pants too.”

When working with a business, Kernan said it all starts with a plan, which he helps execute. And although 90 percent of what he does involves setting goals and executing the plan, 10 percent is also helping coach individuals. “Most people don’t realize that their biggest obstacle is themselves and the fear they have,” he explained. This is usually in the form of adversity in their personal lives, and once that has been addressed, their professional goals explode. “There’s a lot to be learned in times of struggle—humans are like tea bags, you figure out who they really are when dipped in hot water.”

Hallie Tally, co-owner of the IT Managed services company Knights of Bytes has been working with Kernan for the past year. She reached out to him when her business was experiencing a valley and she had lost confidence in her own abilities. “At our first meeting he was able to assess my situation in minutes,” she said. “He gave me two or three things to work on, and it changed my whole mindset. I was able to get out of my own way and generate sales quickly.

He’d seen it before and knew how to help me get out of it.”

Although most business owners seek consulting services when they’re struggling, such as losing money, lots of debt, or a poor work culture, Kernan pointed out it can be even better when things are going well. “It’s most beneficial when you’re able to understand what you’re doing right.”

Kernan works with an average of 6 companies at any given time, but he also runs peer groups, training groups, and one-to-many coaching sessions, with his specialty in implementing a complete sales and marketing program.

He moved back to Nebraska in 2016 and lives in Omaha with his wife Elizabeth but still works with businesses all over the country, conducting video calls and webinars on a daily basis.

One of the leading forces in his life has always been his faith, and it’s his desire to help others achieve success in their professional, but also personal lives, that rewards him most. “Success is usually defined by money and is what most people think they want,” he said. “But once they have it, they realize there are more important things. When branch manager Eric Almquist opened the Omaha office three years ago, he was ready to launch a much different company than the traditional corporate lending model he’d been working in for the previous 19 years.

They meet with every potential borrower in-person from the start and make sure they have a very clear understanding of all financing options. One area in which they specialize is helping veterans, an area that loan officer Rachel Pierce is passionate about. “We’ve made it a priority to be VA trained and certified so that we have a deeper understanding of VA loans,” she said. Much of that focus is spending time educating veterans about what their benefits are.

In fact, the entire company has a

mission to help veterans by partnering with The Brain Treatment Foundation, which provides trauma and mental health support, The Third Option, which provides relief to families of casualties of Special Ops, and 22Kill, which raises suicide awareness for veterans. A military themed approach is even used among Benchmark employees, illustrating the importance of having the right team and how important it is to their overall success. Even the patriotic décor throughout the Omaha office exemplifies the team’s commitment to this important cause.

hen eight-year-old Porter Hinrichs found out his Golden Doodle Auggie had food sensitivities to many store-bought treats, he wanted to do something to help. So he and his mom Melissa found a recipe online to make grain-free, organic dog treats. He set up a stand outside his house and sold them to neighbors and friends. Today, Porter’s Pup Treats has blossomed into a full business, complete with regular customers, a web site, and a priceless education in being an entrepreneur.

Edge: How did you go from having a dog treat stand at home to turning it into an actual business?

Porter: After helping Auggie, I wanted to help other dogs be healthier.

Edge: What are the ingredients you use in your treats?

Melissa: Porter was actually afraid of dogs when he was little, but now he absolutely loves all dogs.

Porter: It’s all organic ingredients: coconut flour, coconut oil, pumpkin, peanut butter, and cage-free eggs. When you mix the peanut butter with the pumpkin it kind of smells, but dogs really like it.

Edge: How did you decide which recipe to make?

Porter: We tried a few different recipes and had Auggie try them to see if he liked them. He really liked the one

Melissa: Mostly word of mouth, but we’ve gone into a few doggie day cares and we’ve done the Children’s Business Fair through Acton Academy.

He was really able to improve his business from the local entrepreneurs who served as judges for the business fair. We’ve also talked about trying the local farmers markets too. Eventually we’d like to get to a subscription base.

Porter: Butters and Chef are two of my customers who like to get their treats delivered every two weeks.

Edge: How often do you make the treats?

Porter: I make fresh treats every other week and would like to increase business so I’m making them weekly. Now that I have a web site I need to sell three bags of treats every month in order to pay the $10.00 web site fee.

Edge: How do you keep track of all your expenses and sales?

Porter: I write it all down and then give my mom the information and she enters it into her Mac Book.

Edge: Have you thought about making treats for cats?

Porter: I haven’t tried making cat treats yet, but I’m open to new things.

Edge: What business challenges do you face?

Melissa: Right now it’s a boutique business. To grow, he’d have to be able to make more treats, so production is the biggest issue. We’re investigating larger commercial molds that can cut up to 54 treats at a time instead of the individual bone-shaped cookie cutters.

Edge: How has this business helped Porter?

Melissa: He’s really been able to explore his talents and he’s learning that you must constantly grow and come up with new ways to think about things. He’s also found a real passion for dogs and how we help them be happy and healthy. Plus, he’s won some awards: 2018: Best presentation and creativity, 2019: local Shark Tank winner and 2019: Beat Business Potential.

Edge: Now that you’ve been doing this for two years, what are your goals?

Porter: I want to try new flavors of treats and have more regular customers.

Jessica Wernli | Sophomore | Papillion-La Vista High School

By SHELLY NOSBISCH When Jessica Wernli tells someone she plays hockey for the U19 Omaha Lady Jr. Lancers, she typically gets a surprised look. “They’re like, ‘no way!

A girl?’” Their surprise is warranted because there are only about 100 girls playing hockey in Nebraska. Her family had season tickets for the UNO Mavericks hockey team, so hockey became part of Jessica’s life from an early age.

She started skating at three and played co-ed hockey from age four until middle school. “I really fell in love with the game when I played a season with the girls.”

Jessica made the team as a freshman, but the competition for open spots is fierce. Some of her teammates come from as far away as Des Moines, Lincoln, or Sioux City. The team travels out of state approximately 8-9 times during

the season, typically going to Illinois, Colorado, Wisconsin, Michigan and sometimes South Dakota. “If you want to be competitive, you have to travel.”

Jessica misses two days of school during those weeks because the team travels on Thursday so they can play on Friday.

When asked if it’s hard to keep up with schoolwork, she replied, “If you ask the teachers, they’re usually really sympathetic about getting you the homework before so you can get started.”

Last September, Jessica began to deal with a new obstacle to playing hockey – Crohn’s disease. “Sometimes when I’m on the ice, I’ll start getting stomach cramps that are hard to push through.” She receives an infusion of medicine every 6-8 weeks to keep her healthy.

when under stress, so she has to balance her school work with playing tennis for Papillion-La Vista High School as well as her hockey schedule. Jessica keeps a positive attitude about it all. “It’s not that tough, I can handle it. I like staying busy a lot. It helps me stay focused.”

Jessica is hoping to play hockey in college, possibly for Midland University in Fremont, although she’d like to go out of state. “That would be a dream,” she said. She plans to major in either psychology or business. “This next year I’ll be looking for schools that fit both my academic and athletic interests.”

College coaches will undoubtedly be paying attention to this talented young woman.

HITTER Kyler Essink | Senior Bennington High School

It’s a great feeling to win the state baseball championship, but it’s an even better one when the whole team rallies around you and your family. Kyler Essink, catcher for Bennington High School, was surprised when his team and their parents handed out purple bracelets that said #TeamCarrie Cancer’s a Pitch before the first state tournament game. Kyler’s mom, Carrie, had been in isolation due to chemotherapy suppressing her bone marrow and sending her into renal failure. Fortunately, Carrie was able to get out of the hospital in time to cheer them on to win the class B state championship.

During the tournament, the team changed their breakdown chant to “Team Carrie” as loud as they could when they came off the field. They also included her in the team photo on the field, and they even put one of the bracelets on the trophy in the case at school. When asked about the support from the team, Kyler replied, “I’m proud of it. Our team’s really close and that’s why we performed so well at state.”

Kyler is a leader, both on and off the field. He was the only junior team captain this past season. “As a returning captain, I’ll probably take on more of a leadership role. Just hoping to repeat,” he said, grinning. This past season has been the most fun. “It was really cool to win the first game, and then we kept it going and decided to win it all.” In addition to the team championship in 2019, Kyler personally received Academic All-State, Academic All-Conference, First Team Eastern Midlands Conference All-Conference, and Honorable Mention All-State.

Kyler plans to pursue a career in healthcare. He’s a member of the UNMC High School Alliance program, which teaches about various branches of healthcare. There are about sixty-six members who had to undergo a rigorous application process to be selected. During the school year, he attends class in Bennington for four periods, drives to UNMC for a two hour class, and then returns for varsity football and baseball practices.

His family moved from Creighton, NE, to Bennington when Kyler was 14. It was tough to leave, but Bennington baseball has helped him find new friends. “We’re like brothers. We just like to have fun.”
