TOUCHES hen Dan and Allie Allison moved back to Omaha from Arizona, they sought a contemporary abode with abundant natural light, plenty of play space for their two boys and an outdoor living space.

Not finding what they wanted on the market, the couple followed friend and realtor Stacey Childers’ advice and decided to custom build. The home they built in the West Bay Woods neighborhood, near 180th and Center, reflects the family’s contemporary aesthetic and individual desires.

Allie’s favorite space is the kitchen and great room.

South-facing windows draw the natural light that Allie loves.

The focal point of the large, open area is the sleek fireplace in warm neutrals, created by designer Stacey Muhle of Artistico design. Mocha-colored cabinetry and floating shelves surround the fireplace area. Allie, a bargain shopper who loves to play with unique pieces, selected the décor for the home. She printed large canvases with black and white photos of her children for the floating shelves. The neutral colors of the walls, wood trim and fireplace serve to make the boys, ages 10 and 6, all the more striking. Amid the taupe, chestnut, coffee and black colors, Allie added pops of bright apple green to liven up the space.

Designer Muhle helped Allie and Dan navigate the many choices of tiling, cabinetry and hardware for the home. Allie chose lighter wood cabinets and tile for the kitchen to keep things bright, with darker chocolates and blacks reflected in the glass-tile backsplash and granite countertops.

Muhle suggested creating a curved privacy wall to separate the toilet from a floating sink. That same S-curve is reflected in the great room where a curved carpet edge merges with the entryway and kitchen tile.

A small desk and office space is tucked behind the kitchen: the control room where stay-at-home-mom Allie manages the home. “I knew I had to have an office space, but I liked that it was tucked in its own niche,” she said.

In the basement, business consultant and public speaker Dan has his personal office. Both Dan and Allie love the exercise room they prioritized as part of the basement plan – they use it daily.

Upstairs, sons Ashton and Braxton make use of spacious bedrooms and a Jack-and-Jill bathroom with darker, more masculine neutrals. Dan and Allie’s master bedroom and bathroom is across the hall. Their bathroom features coffee-colored tiles with penny-like circle details and a spacious, walk-in shower – no shower doors to clean, Allie notes.

The kids have ample space to play both downstairs and upstairs. A small room off 9 the main floor entryway serves as a mini-living room for the boys. Upstairs, a bonus room houses toys, video games and is also the home of Bentley, the family pet lizard.

The whole family enjoys the covered patio and outdoor fireplace. The patio features remote-controlled patio shades that reduce glare when the family is watching the outdoor TV. A planned pool will take the family outdoors even more next summer and bring a bit of Arizona to the Elkhorn home.

With its mature trees, the Lanoha-developed West Bay Woods neighborhood attracted Allie and Dan. Allie’s sister lives close by, and the kids go to school just down the road. “We fell in love with the schools, restaurants and the up-and-coming area,” she said.

Sharing a family tradition with friends

he holiday season for many is abundant with food, family and tradition. The Rogers family is no different. Their love for the holidays and their community has prompted them to continue a family tradition of spreading cheer through an annual Christmas Eve open house.

Grant and SuZanne Rogers moved to Omaha from Wisconsin in 1987 and along with their luggage, they brought their joyful memories with them. “Grant and I both grew up in Wisconsin,” said SuZanne. “My parents started a tradition of decorating the house from head to toe for Christmas and having everyone over on Christmas Eve. We moved here and continued the tradition in Omaha.”

The Rogers’ Christmas Eve open house continues to grow, and this year they will welcome more than 200 people into their Indian Creek home for food, laughter, games, and a very special visit from Santa.

“It’s been a long standing family tradition,” said SuZanne. “It’s pretty special. He (Santa) just really makes the whole thing come together. Each child, and now teenager, talks with Santa; he reads “’Twas the Night Before Christmas.” All the kids get a little gift too. We make everything ourselves, including the food — except we order in sushi; and everyone leaves the party with a holiday ornament. It’s fun to have everyone in the same place.”

With Grant and SuZanne being the owners of GiGi’s Cupcakes in Village Pointe, a delicious variety of holiday cupcakes makes their appearance at the

party too.

The family spends weeks decorating their home, inside and out, and their goal is to get it all done by the weekend before Thanksgiving. Their teenage sons, Jack and Sam, help out before their annual hunting trip. “We try to make it fun and not overly rushed,” said SuZanne. “The boys go deer hunting in Wisconsin and I have my mom, sister and girlfriends come from Wisconsin and Colorado. For four days we do shopping, bake and just do fun girl stuff.”

The Rogers don’t just deck the halls; they deck walls, staircases and the exterior of their home, as well. The holiday decor wouldn’t be complete without their several Christmas trees, all having a different theme. “We have one tree with all the boys’ decorations from school, a patriotic tree, a tinsel

tree…there are 10 to 12 trees,” said SuZanne. “One tree is really special; I used to travel a lot for work, I got home late one night and Grant and the boys had put up a giant snowman Christmas tree in our bedroom. It’s a green tree with the snow on it and every ornament is a different kind of snowman. It’s super special. We still put it up every year.”

SuZanne decorates with several items that add a nostalgic, sentimental feel. “We have my dad’s, who has since passed, skates. He was a hockey coach and we have his original hockey skates and my mom’s skates on holiday display.”

With a sweet touch, the Rogers adorn the outside of their home with red and white lights. “The outside of the home is a candy cane theme; our house, the awnings and eves have candy cane lighting,” said SuZanne. “There are candy cane lights down the sidewalk. We do all the decorations ourselves.”

The Rogers family keeps the holiday festivities going all the way through the New Year with an annual ski trip to Avon, CO to visit SuZanne’s sister. Even the family dogs get in on spreading the holiday cheer. “We have therapy dogs, Gracie Girl and Bo Jolly. We visit nursing homes and read with kids, things like that. We normally do that the week before Christmas Eve.” The holidays are a wonderful time for the Rogers family, and they hope their longtime traditions continue through the years. “We’re big tradition people,” she said. “It’s all something my kids look forward to, and I think they’ll do it with their families someday.”

hen William Huben came to St. Wenceslaus School as its new principal five years ago, he brought not only his leadership in education but also a tradition of patriotism.

Having served as the principal at St. Mary’s School in Bellevue, Huben embraced the strong connection the school has with Offutt Air Force Base where many of its students have parents who are active duty service men and women. Through the parish bulletin, school newsletter, and the school’s information system, the news about the Veteran’s Day program spread quickly, and it has since become an annual tradition. Simply titled “Veteran’s Day Celebration,” it’s become an event the school looks forward to. “The staff at St. Wenceslaus and the students are the ones who make this celebration so special,” said Huben.

This year’s event featured over 90 retired and active duty military personnel who were escorted down the red carpet by student hosts during the opening procession. With flags held high and everyone standing at attention, the room was filled with emotion. Once seated, the audience was led in prayer by Rev. Father Tom Bauwens, followed by the Boystown JROTC Color Guard who provided the Presentation of Colors. This year’s guest speaker was Colonel Jeffrey R. Granger, Commander of the 55th Communications Group, 55th Wing at Offutt Air Force Base. Colonel Granger delivered an emotional and moving

1. Spend some time in the Marines.

Osborn, an Omaha native, spent eight years in the Marine Corps infantry as a mortarman and a hand-to-hand combat instructor. Running a restaurant, Osborn says, isn’t far removed from being a Marine.

“You have to execute 100 percent every day (at the restaurant),” he said. “In the Marines, you absolutely have to do that, because all your buddies are relying on you to do the right thing every single time. Here, the guests are relying on you, because they want the same thing every time they come in. They want consistency.”

The Marine Corps approach seems to be working. Consistent service and products have boosted Mahogany’s staying power in a competitive market,

2. Take care of people, especially your staff.

After Osborn left the Corps, he went back to college and took a job waiting tables. He was studying economics; he figured he’d become a stockbroker. But the restaurant industry proved to be his calling. “I fell in love with taking care of people,” he said.

Osborn worked as a waiter, bartender and a trainer before moving into management. At Mahogany, his team meets every week to discuss the needs of the restaurant. Training occurs continually – even servers with years of experience may find themselves learning something new and honing their approach.

Service is tailored to each table and what each customer wants out of the dining experience.

He relishes the opportunity to train and support the staff.

“A good day for me is having a busy restaurant,” Osborn said. “But it’s also watching the staff grow. That’s where I like to hang my hat – when the staff has learned something.”

3. Pay attention to the meat.

What makes Mahogany’s steak so good? “It’s the way we cook it and where we get the meat,” Osborn said. Mahogany steaks come from L&L Packing Co. in Chicago. Steaks are hand-selected and hand-cut, and attention to detail makes a difference.

Osborn said. “We get the best out of the top 3 percent.”

Mahogany is also unique in the cuts of steak it offers. Its best-selling steak is a rare cut – a bone-in filet. “You always hear of bone-in strips or bone-in ribeyes, but you very rarely hear of a bone-in filet as it’s a difficult cut to execute,” he said.

The cut combines the tenderness of the filet with the flavor infused into the meat from the bone marrow and marbling. It’s his wife’s favorite. “Once you try it, you’re hooked.”

4. Invest in a 900-degree broiler and a 400-degree plate-warming oven.

Mahogany’s huge broiler cooks steaks at 900 degrees from the top and bottom.

“It sears the steak, and keeps all of the juices locked in,” Osborn said. “That helps keep the meat really tender and flavorful.”

But the perfect steak is more nuanced than just cooking temperature. Because each steak at Mahogany is hand-cut, there are variations in thickness that equate to variations in cooking time. The Mahogany cook who broils the steaks handles up to 80 steaks at a time in the broiler, cooking each exactly the way the customer likes it.

Once the steak is cooked perfectly, it is served sizzling on a 400-degree plate so that each bite is hot. “You won’t find that halfway through the steak, it loses its luster,” he said.

5. Love your steak.

Osborn’s relationship with steak goes back a long time. Growing up, his mom would ask him every year on his birthday what he wanted for his birthday dinner.

“Every year, it’s been steak on the grill,” he said.

rowing up, Eli Young Band’s bassist Jon Jones spent his holidays at home in West Omaha with his family, always enjoying a white Christmas. This year, with a successful and ever-growing country music career, Jones is looking forward to visiting his hometown during the holidays and playing at Sokol Auditorium December 13.

Jones has fond memories of growing up in Omaha, spending time with his family and friends.

He attended Westside High School and spent much of his free time practicing and performing with his rock band, Sunkissed. “My mother and grandmother both were music teachers, so I started playing the violin at a young age,” said Jones.

“Freshman year of high school, I had to choose between sports or music. I chose music. I figured there was a slim chance that I would make a career as an athlete.”

After high school, Jones decided it was time to fly the coop and head south to Texas. As a freshman at North Texas State University, Jon began his friendship with band mates, drummer Chris Thompson and guitarist James Young.

Vocalist Mike Eli joined the group the following year. “Jon fit into Texas real quick,” said James Young. “I met him when we were sharing a music class our freshman year in college. Truth be told, Jon was a little more “studied up” and he would help me on our music assignments.”

The four college students developed an instant friendship, and soon discovered they shared a love for making music. “We were friends in the beginning and that really helps along the way,” said Young. “We’ve been through a lot of shenanigans together.” Jones considers his bandmates to be family. “We’re like four brothers,” he said.

With a unique mix of edgy country and heartland rock, the band has put their stamp on the country music world.

Along with their platinum record, Crazy Girl, countless sold out shows, and a recent Country Music Awards’ Vocal Group of the Year nomination (that 60 |

Young says is nothing short of “amazing”), the group is hoping to continue their success with a new album coming out early next year. “Our songs definitely come through experience,” said Jones.

“We’re still trying to figure out one good way to write a song. There is a certain amount of pressure this time around; it’s forced us to really dig deep because people are really going to hear this one (new album).”

As the band continues their “Drunk Last Night” tour, Jones is looking forward to his performance at Sokol Auditorium, where he remembers playing in the Battle of the Bands back in high school. “I love coming back home, seeing extended family that I don’t get to see a lot,” Jones said. “I get a little extra giddy. My band knows my attitude will change a little bit when we’re headed to Omaha. My visits are usually based on a performance somehow, but I try to get back every year.”

Jones has fond memories of his heartland holidays. He spent his winter season like many other kids; helping shovel the driveway and looking forward to Christmas morning with his family.

“Everyone would come to Omaha, a lot

of cousins...my grandmother would buy everyone something for Christmas,” said Jones. “One year I remember getting a VHS tape about trains, I believe it was called Riding the Rails.”

One particularly funny holiday memory sticks with Jones. “My sister and I got a bread warmer for my grandmother and the next year she re-gifted it to my mother. I guess it stayed in the family.

She probably still has it...I’ll have to ask her about it.”

Beyond his memories of Christmas as a child, Jones is still fond of the local food and the feeling of community you get from Omaha. “Last time we were in town I had a craving for Big Fred’s Pizza, and one time I had to drive through and get Runza,” said Jones. “I miss everything being ten minutes away from everything. Dallas is really big and spread out. The guys (band members) and my wife have commented on how beautiful Omaha is. I also miss the seasons.”

With family and friends being an important part of Jones’ life, he says he and his college sweetheart and now wife, Sarah, plan to bring their son, Hudson, to Omaha as much as they can. “I still have friends in Omaha. Their kids do

things together and we want our son to be a part of that. I want him to know where he came from...I would love to move back at some point.”

Young said the Omaha crowds have always been good to them and that the Midwest has always embraced the band, even before the launch of their first self-titled album and before their songs began playing on the radio. “We’re looking forward to the (Omaha) fans,” said Young. “With it being Jon’s hometown, family will come out. It’s a real cool vibe to be a part of that. And we’re looking forward to playing some of our new music and trying it out on the fans.”

A break in the tour will give the Eli Young Band some time off from life on the road to celebrate the holidays with their families. Jones is looking forward to spending Christmas with his wife and son at their home in Texas. “I just want Christmas to always be about family. It’s different for my son with me being on the road all the time, so it’s a time to just be about him.”

Even though Jones now calls Texas home, he doesn’t forget the great place where he was raised. “Jon always keeps love for Omaha,” said Young. “He wears his Nebraska hat quite a bit.”

On the shelves? Lots and lots of wine. The twist: Customers at Brix would have the chance to try before they buy with nifty, self-service wine dispensers - making wine a lot less complicated and snobby. “People feel intimidated,” said Matuszek, founder and CEO of Brix. “This makes it easy.”

Since opening in 2010, Brix at Village Pointe has become known as a casual-yet-sophisticated place to taste a wine (or several) and take a bottle home. But in the past four years, Matuszek has steered Brix toward offering experiences outside the

When it opened, the Brix bistro was a place for tapas only. Today, the bistro offers a full-service menu, including brunch, lunch and dinner and a popular happy hour. The latest change to Brix includes a new 20-draft craft beer bar and a more open layout between the previously distinct bistro and retail store. The changes make the Village Pointe location a bit more like it’s Midtown Crossing cousin – a little less of a wine shop with a bistro, and more like a bistro that also sells wine.

Matuszek said the changes are helping Brix to keep up with the changing palate of consumers. The store still offers hundreds of bottles of wine for sale, and customers can still sample 72 bottles of wine by the ounce from Italian-made dispensing machines. But it is also a place where customers can get a craft beer or cocktail after work or stay for dinner. “It’s evolved from a wine bar to an experience with beer, spirits, food and wine,” Matuszek said.

The craft revolution The recent renovations at Brix have much to do with the explosion of the craft beer market. Craft beer sales rose 15 percent in dollars and 13 percent in volume in the first six months of 2013, according to the Brewers Association.

It’s the fastest growing segment in the alcohol business.

While Brix offers more than 750 bottled beers, true beer lovers want a draft.

“To be considered legitimate in that category, you have it on tap,” Matuszek said.

The dramatic beer bar entices craft beer lovers with a casual vibe that mimics the feel of the Midtown location.

Making beer a part of the Brix focus is a natural succession to its wine roots, Matuszek said. Consumer interest in the nuances of craft beers is not unlike what the wine industry experienced a few years ago. Like wine aficionados, beer

geeks want to learn what makes a great beer different, explore distinct tastes and play with pairing beers with food, he said.

Similarly, consumer demand for craft spirits has evolved, and consumers are diving into the nuances of small batch and artisanal distilleries. Younger Brix customers especially have flocked toward single malt Scotch - made with whiskies from a single Scotch distillery.

With more than 110 varieties of single malt Scotches, fans have a good place to

start at Brix. “We sell more single malt Scotch than any account in the state of Nebraska,” Matuszek said.

Keeping these trends accessible to customers remains the goal at Brix, and ample meeting space has allowed Matuzek to schedule experts to educate novices and enthusiasts alike about vineyards, fermentation, Scotch and brewing.

He has watched with interest as the demand for single malt Scotch has rapidly increased – both globally and locally. “That was surprising to me, being more of a wine guy,” he said.

to REPEAT Brian Peska | Age 17 | Skutt High School At age 5, Brian Peska could have been at home playing video games or pestering his sisters, but instead he spent many of his weekends on the mat, wrestling for the Gross Junior Cougar Wrestling Club. Throughout elementary and middle school, Peska showed great promise by winning or placing in most tournaments he competed in, leading the way to an impressive run at Skutt High School.

As a freshman, Peska competed in the 103-pound class even though he weighed in at only 90 pounds the entire season. Although surrendering a 13-pound advantage to most opponents, he finished the year undefeated in JV tournaments and collected a few wins at the Varsity level as well. As a sophomore, he competed in the 106-pound class (in 2011, the National Federation of State High School Associations Wrestling Rules Committee approved an upward shift of the weight classes, moving the 103-pound class to 106 pounds). Peska grappled his way to the Class B State Tournament, finishing 5th.

Last year in his junior campaign, Peska again competed at the 106-pound level, but this time his frame was a perfect fit.

He took first place at the Rumble on the Red Tournament in Fargo, North Dakota where he defeated the eventual 2013 South Dakota State Champion in the title match. Peska went undefeated from this point on. He finished the season strong with an incredible showing at the 2013 Nebraska State Tournament, becoming the Class B State Champion. His efforts aided Skutt in capturing their 15th State Title and their first State Dual Championship.

As a senior this year, Peska will be competing in the 120-pound weight class, and all eyes will be on him in his quest to repeat as State Champion. Brian has two older sisters, Grace and Kristine, and is the son of Joe and Patty Peska of Omaha.

Brooke Denton | Age 17 | Skutt High School With her long, blonde hair, brown eyes and infectious smile, one might not describe Brooke Denton as a “gym rat”…without knowing her. Other ways to describe Denton: sharp shooter, 3-point specialist, basketball star.

Having played the sport since the second grade, Denton has had aspirations of eventually playing college basketball, a dream that is now reality as she recently accepted a scholarship from Rockhurst University in Kansas City, where she plans to study Physical Therapy.

Known as a hard worker, Denton has dedicated herself to basketball, playing not only for Skutt High School, but also for Iowa Attack— a Nike Elite AAU club based out of Ames, Iowa. This club play has allowed her to travel the country playing in high profile tournaments where her teams have consistently performed well. It’s also given her the opportunity to train with her mentor Lyndsey Medders, who was an All-American Point Guard at Iowa State and WNBA Draftee.

At Skutt, Denton is a four year Varsity player and has been a starter since her sophomore year. One of her most memorable performances was during the District Championship her freshman year when she pumped in three straight 3-point shots in 40 seconds, giving her team the lead they held to get the win.

Denton has amassed quite a collection of individual accomplishments, with 94 3-pointers in her first three years at Skutt, 47 of those during her junior year. She was named All-Area and All-State Honorable Mention her sophomore and junior seasons by the Omaha World Herald and was named All-State Honorable Mention by the Lincoln Journal Star her junior season.

As a senior this year, Denton’s fans are excited to watch her sizzle the net and close out her high school career with a star performance.

Brooke has an older brother Dillon and two step-sisters, Paige and Jordan Denton. She is the daughter of Bill and Bobbie Koon of Omaha and Darin and Tina Denton of Lincoln. daniel muller

The Larson’s lead a busy life, with the entire family running a hundred miles an hour! When Sean isn’t swimming competitively after a week of running his own insurance agency, he’s cheering on his wife Enita who competes in triathlons in her “spare” time and runs her own veterinary clinic in Gretna.

Their annual search of a fresh Christmas tree started 15 years ago when Enita wanted to share her childhood tradition with Sean, whose upbringing in Pittsburgh usually involved a well decorated, artificial tree.

Now with son Ayden and daughter Avelyn, their quest for the perfect tree involves a visit to Nordstrom’s Tree Farm where they enjoy an afternoon of fun, a hayrack ride and hot chocolate while the fresh fir is prepared for the ride home.
