Toward a Universal Spirituality BY JIM

STEMPEL NOTIONS OF UNIVERSAL spirituality seem to be out and about these days, the idea that the world’s religious traditions are merging toward a more comprehensible whole, a nugget of truth extracted from the countless myths, dogmas and dictums that for millennia had these same traditions at one another’s throats. Good luck with that, I say. Sure, it seems a worthy and well-intentioned effort, I guess, but I have the sense that crowbarring the existing religions into some new, unrecognizable theological archetype, or melting them down into one glowing ingot of new age aphorisms, in the end won’t really please anyone. To me, at least, this effort seems akin to trying to hammer together the sleekest, fastest, most beautiful racing car imaginable from the various parts of every automobile ever made. Old parts, new parts, some that work, many that don’t, some gleaming, others rusted, the chosen ones carefully polished, then squeezed and crowbarred and screwed together to form some odd, new contraption. A Chevrolet fender here, a Rolls engine there, and toss in a BMW steering wheel. You get the point. What might something like that eventually look like? Will it ever run? Like I said, good luck with that.

Besides, we don’t have to merge, or gravitate toward, or synthesize ourselves nearer to universal spirituality, because that was accomplished a long time ago. Called life, it’s the most universal thing we all share, and, from a spiritual perspective, the greatest of equalizers. We may not all have a shot at playing professional sports or an Ivy League education, but we do have a shot at spiritual development. It’s our birthright. It’s universal. Over the last 80 years, developmental psychology has discovered the stages of human growth, from infancy to adulthood — and beyond. Today there is wide agreement that we human beings pass through a sequence of stages or phases of development that are progressive in nature. These stages have been discovered to be universal; that is, we are all born with a built-in template for a remarkable range of transcendence. This progression affects not only how we think, but our morals, compassion, physical abilities and understanding of the world. The more we mature, the more we understand, while at the same time developing the capacity for far deeper and mature relationships. Looked at through the other end of the telescope, it seems the Universe — or The One, or God, or whatever your preference — has decided to present itself to us in sensible, successive stages, just as we treat

our own youngsters. We are all born as small human mammals, no question, but we must learn, we must aspire, to become more and more human. It’s called growing up. Interestingly, it has been shown that for those who succeed at the adult stage of maturation, new, even more robust phases appear, suggesting that our transcendent path may lead to whole new realms of highly spiritual fulfillment. This template is the regimen for our spiritual development, and life is the arena in which it is played out. In that sense, our everyday lives are of profound importance; our relationships and aspirations, desires and efforts, and failures and successes are the stuff of spiritual advancement — and, yes, regression. For simplicity’s sake, development can be broken down into roughly two parallel tracks: cognition, and compassion. Cognition is not only what we think, but how we think, while compassion is our moral and caring relationships with others. Properly developed, cognition leads to wisdom, while compassion leads to a loving relationship with all beings. Sounds simple. Unfortunately, as we all know, life is anything but that. Because this progressive template challenges us ceaselessly, life proves to be a relentless battle. There is always another hill to climb, and this constant pressure can, at times, prove overwhelming.

Pathologies, delusions, addictions, apathy and hopelessness are all, by and large, various forms of avoidance we sometimes seek as shelter from the daily storm. Moreover, our lives are fraught with potential detours and wrong turns at every corner. For everything we might get right, it seems there are ten we might get wrong, sabotaging our progress along the way. “Staying young,” for instance, does not mean never growing up. Generally, good decisions lead to greater love, understanding and happiness, while poor decisions generate anger, confusion and sadness. That’s the road map. How well we navigate determines our fate. For every potential positive, there’s always a potential negative. So, the obvious and hard truth is, we must make good decisions along the way. How could we possibly learn and advance if it were otherwise? How do we overcome all our previous poor decisions? With good ones! The developmental sequence tells us that spirituality is a reality, not a myth, and that both its direction and elements can now be grasped. Within the last 50 years science has augmented our developmental road map with some interesting facts of its own. ESP, for instance, once thought of as silly rubbish, is now a demonstrated fact, and while its reach seems — experimentally, at least — weak, the reams of data supporting its reality have turned the old material worldview on its head. Particle entanglement, the established fact that particles can remain linked over any distance and perform in synchronicity instantaneously at speeds greater than light, put the final nail in the materialist coffin. Seems there’s much more to the universe than a sea of endless particle collisions, after all. Does this mean we now understand the universe completely? Of course not! I suspect we have barely scratched the surface. But it does mean we have the basic ingredients that speak to our own, human struggle, and those ingredients are now reasonably clear and positive. The rigorous pursuit of knowledge and compassion are the ingredients of success — for anyone, anywhere. Question everything critically, while increasingly opening yourself to compassion. It’s not always easy, but it works, and life is the crucible where all the progress takes place. Universal spirituality is perking constantly in and around us, so there’s really no need to go hunting for it. Look out any window and that’s what you’ll see, at times wonderful, at times terrifying, but always transformative. Transcendence is not some trendy, academic term, but the very definition of life. It’s just that we’re often too busy to take notice. In difficult times, that’s always good to remember. a JIM STEMPEL is a speaker, author of nine books, and numerous articles regarding history, warfare, and spirituality. Seeds of Wisdom lie in every Adversity BY

CRAIG KOLAVO

I AM A FIRM BELIEVER that everything in life happens for a reason. The Universe doesn’t make mistakes. Unfortunately, it often takes time for these seeds to bloom. To live mindfully means to be aware of this truth and to look for the guidance or seeds of wisdom in all of life’s experiences. I have personally experienced enough adversity (failed relationships, addictions, injuries, etc.), which hindsight has proven to be blessings in disguise, that I now trust in this Universal Law. The trick is to have patience and certainty for the seeds that have yet to bloom. This is my definition of faith. In my book, I Am God in Disguise, So Are You, I’ve interviewed some courageous people who are great examples of this law at work in the world. Some of their stories include battling cancer, growing up in foster homes, and financial disaster. Without fail, they have all said these challenging experiences have led them to discover hidden treasures. My friend Fanny actually said, “In hindsight, cancer was my friend, forcing me to make changes in my life that I was unable to do on my own.” The School of Life can be brutal! Like any school, the longer we ignore our lessons, the more difficult the tests become. Trust me, I know. I was one of the stubborn ones. The definition of crazy is someone who repeats the same behavior over and over expecting different results. To be mindful simply means being aware that we are always being guided by a force greater than ourselves. I’m optimistic in these turbulent times. There is a power at work in the Universe that often reveals itself during our most challenging times. Natural disasters are often good examples of this phenomenon at work. During these times of collective pain, humanity rises to the occasion. I lived in Houston for many years and have witnessed several hurricanes and floods. People come together for a common good — young, old, rich, poor, black, white, it doesn’t matter. And when the rescue boat pulls up to your house, they don’t ask who you voted for! This is baked into our DNA. Unfortunately, it often takes these highly emotional states to activate this primal reaction.

I feel like our current political climate is similar to one of these storms. I believe this “Trump Era” will prove to be a blessing in disguise. We have somehow become very complacent, comfortable in our discomfort. Our country was in need of a wake-up call. The collective pain we are now experiencing is causing people to organize and engage in the political process like never before. True democracy requires everyone to be involved. Again, this is baked into our DNA! I am confident people will come together for a common good. How does this philosophy hold up during a pandemic? Everything happens for a reason. Really? Yes! I do believe we will come out of this crisis better than ever. I can think of a few immediate benefits I have experienced this past month: • The virus has helped dissolve the illusion of separation between us. We are all one! The virus knows no borders. • We have been forced to reset. As a society, we have been bragging for too long about our ability to multitask. This temporary isolation gives us time to be still, self-reflective and mindful. • We have been taking a lot for granted. This crisis has made me more aware and grateful for things I rarely ever thought about. We are now longing for simple personal interactions with family, friends or neighbors. We might start to recognize the often “invisible people” in service industries who help keep this country running (bus drivers, food industry workers, delivery drivers, garbage collectors, etc.). • New heroes are revealed every day. We’ve all developed a deeper appreciation for healthcare workers. • The planet is quickly healing during this momentary pause. This should give us hope for what is possible in the future if we have responsible leadership. Again, in every adversity lie seeds of wisdom. Unfortunately, it often takes some time for these seeds to bloom. Coming together as a global community could be a hidden treasure. a CRAIG KOLAVO is author of “I Am God in Disguise, So Are You,” a practical guide to creating lasting change in today’s world. 100% of e-Book proceeds benefit water.org. Your Signature Key of God Light A Pleiadian Message BY CHRISTINE DAY BELOVED ONES, WE GREET YOU. The winds of change continue to flow across your Earth plane. A constant building of higher light structures is flowing onto the planet, creating a further lifting of the veils and forging doorways into other multidimensional realities. The role of this higher light is to act as a modifier for your hearts, while simultaneously opening and expanding the multidimensional framework within planet Earth. These vast transformations are creating a pure form of light to ascend, exposing a new landscape of light patterning consciousness. This patterning is being created now for you to fully utilize to activate another level of your self-realization process. The action of this patterning is arising from inside the Earth where the higher dimensional reality settings exist within the magnetic core. These reality vibrations are being drawn upwards and outwards across the planet. This movement can be likened to a kaleidoscope, with a constant movement of changing light patterns of multidimensional consciousness being projected within the atmosphere of your planet. This frequency has been setting up a powerful platform of crystalline energy for the expanded activation within your heart, brain cells and within your energetic field. You can enter this forcefield of light consciously. This process is a natural action of you re-tapping into your heart through conscious intent. At this juncture, your conscious choice action is magnified and much more potent than ever before. These vibrations of light are designed to open you into a vast spectrum of the unlimited sacred light potential, in which you can engage to access the expanded vibration of your higher realm self.

VIBRATIONAL AVENUES Through these shifts is the creation of an assortment of vibrational avenues that can be likened to a series of doorways. These access points allow you to access a higher consciousness reality base where you can align and navigate through to your higher realm component of Self. A vast number of realities are operating simultaneously within your Earth plane. They have always existed on your planet. This is the moment for you to begin to actively work and engage within these entry points of higher consciousness. A remembering sequence, which can only be accessed within your heart, enables you to link into a multidimensional map 8  WWW.EDGEMAGAZINE.NET

with a series of codes. These codes are innate within you; they are individual and uniquely Divine. Recognized by the collective consciousness within this resident Universe, they are known as your Signature Key of God Light. Your key is now accessible to you within your heart’s multidimensional framework. As the essence of your key is activated, you set in motion a lineage. Your collective signature key energies are designed to establish a new order of light throughout humanity. Those of you who consciously reestablish your key energies are to play a further pivotal role in this destiny plan of Earth.

UNLIMITED ENERGY This time is about you reestablishing the connection of your lineage, which sets in motion a unique flow of unlimited energy within your heart. This process creates a sacred design to assist you in becoming more anchored within your heart and sets in place an established higher order of a light communion network between your heart and telepathic center. Those of you who are ready to move beyond the illusion held within the barrier of the third-dimensional timeline are being called now. You are invited to enter these higher reality states of your consciousness and collectively navigate these doorways through your heart through the use of your signature key. The action of the “so called” pandemic is playing a pivotal role in the transforming and transmutation of your cells. A higher level of electrical flow is being conducted through your brain synapses and within the nervous system. These expanded frequencies are strongly impacting your experiences of feeling a disorientation or dizziness. You need to slow down and rest in the stillness of your heart to allow an integration of these higher electrical light particles to assimilate through your systems. You are aligning to a higher state of your multidimensional consciousness. The telepathic center within your brain is reactivating after lifetimes of being dormant. Yes, many of you have been actively engaged within some aspects of your telepathic center for some time. At this pivotal moment, your telepathic center is being shifted and turned up fully to enable you to navigate within the higher realm communion settings that are actively opening up on Earth. This expanded communion potential within you gives you a different scale of access potential of frequency than ever before. The communion that is being held jointly

by us extends fully around your planet to impact your ability to return to a place of self-empowerment, enabling a deepening alignment within your telepathic center. You are initiating the energetic transformation to return to fully experience the multidimensional potential within your heart. This is the time of a revolution of your self-resurrection!

COMMUNION EXPERIENCES You are being called to gather together energetically, forming and creating a series of joint communion experiences. This coming together will build and open you up within your multidimensional capabilities, allowing a higher stability to be maintained within the newly expanded openings of your telepathic center. This will allow a building and anchoring of a higher potential communion to be able to form within your individual groups. Ultimately, this will empower your group to operate within higher communion settings within the Universal communities. You all have essential roles to play in supporting the acceleration of light awakening on Earth at this juncture by moving yourselves to this capability. Many of you have been aware of this acceleration and higher potential of light that has already been engaging within the Earth plane. This month you will witness a further upswing of expanded light enter the planet. There are many shifting dimensional changes that are being birthed within Earth, and the night sky will reflect these pure light forms that are creating dynamic changes in the way your planet energetically operates now. Look for the forms of light appearing in your night sky, allow your awareness to open into these flowing forms and you will automatically be linked into a higher realm component of your consciousness. You are a natural part of this evolution. As you hold your heart and align to these energetic unveilings, a series of revelations will be bestowed upon you through the avenue of your heart. All beings of light within this resident Universe are gathering as one consciousness to hold a prayer, a communion of love, for all of humanity — especially for those of you who are actively, consciously participating in this unfolding process. This is an enormous part of your destiny that you set in motion as you open within your hearts. Activate another level of your mission now through a focused participation within your heart, no matter what! As you choose to enter these higher realm aspects of sacred consciousness, the old barriers

within you, which have been held in place for lifetimes, will simply dislodge from your physical bodies and dissolve. Be willing to let go of all that you think you are, all that you think you know and allow a falling away of the old, hidden, outworn ways of thinking and being within the illusion. Open onto a clean canvas of unlimited potential and simply allow the necessary changes to shift you in your life, giving yourself permission to be repositioned to align with Truth within your heart.

FROM WITHIN Much has changed in your day-to-day routines, and yet the most important changes need to come from within you. You are being called to let go of all you hold onto, allowing Truth to be revealed to you now. Make room in your lives to receive the knowledge and understanding for this time. Through your heart connections, the answers can be given to you. By building heart awareness, you reclaim yourself and you claim your heritage of light. We do know that the third-dimensional drama on your planet is creating a deep disturbance to the human ego mind. We ask you to disregard the illusion. Take one moment at a time and allow yourself to transcend the illusion by moving and aligning into your multidimensional heart. The upending of your third-dimensional life, as you have known previously, is necessary for these huge shifts of awareness to occur. You can trust the vastness of your light, which has always resided within you, and take the necessary steps to deepen your connection to the force of your higher realm light within your heart. Before you incarnated, you chose to be part of this process now, and by choosing to come and be here, much was revealed to you about this time of total reset on the Earth. The ultimate outcome and play out of this entire resurrection process of Earth’s consciousness and energetic frequency was shown to you. You still hold that memory within the multidimensional frequency

within your heart. You only need to play your role one day at a time, one moment at a time, trusting. Witness your life as it is — and then let go. Trust the sacred unfolding of your path. Utilize the conscious breath, in and out of the mouth, and choose to let go into your heart. This is your way Home, anchoring a profound awakening as you align deeper within this physical body.

FREQUENCY LIGHT Lines of frequency light are emerging from within your planet, creating new forms and signature energies of God light. Each one of you holds a unique form of God light within your heart. As you consciously reconnect within your heart, you begin to align and activate your original God light frequency. These energy lines, which you activate within you, are designed to shift the entire body of consciousness within the planet. You set in motion a building of the unfolding frequency of change within the planet through this action. As you individually activate your divine vibration within your heart, you set off a wave of light consciousness that impacts all of humanity. By holding your focused awareness within your heart in chosen moments, you contribute to the highest potential light frequency transforming Earth. Be in a state of receivership within your heart. This means to be open to the many blessings that are coming as a natural byproduct of you consciously choosing reconnection to the higher realm state of your sacred heart. An aspect of your abundance is released in your life as you set in motion waves of your divine frequency. ACTIVATION PROCESS The following is the process of activating your signature key frequency of your heart. We want to remind you this is a natural process of reconnection. 1. Place both palms of your hands to rest on your chest. Utilize your conscious breath, in and out of the mouth, and bring

your awareness and breath into where you feel the pressure of your hands or warmth of your hands on your heart space. Wait for a connection that you see, sense or feel. 2. Slowly bring your palms off your physical chest, bring your awareness to the space that opens around your heart space as you do this. Open into the space that you see, sense or feel. 3. Bring your conscious breath into the space and let go, and feel yourself move deeper within this space. 4. These sacred words are given to us for the reawakening of your signature key energy of your heart: Ae Entae Shen, Estae Asintahn Eee, Alin Entae. Hold your awareness within the space while you place these words in the space of your heart. 5. Now breathe and let go deeper within the opening. Open up your awareness and let go into the energetic lines that are being created by the frequency of your words. You may see, sense or feel these energies. 6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 two more times. 7. Then slowly bring your awareness and palms back to rest on your physical chest. Feel the essence of the energy of the lines flow within your heart cells. Integrate with your conscious breath. You can do this process daily to allow the full activation of your signature key energy. We witness you as you reopen into your key signature frequency of your heart, and realign yourself within the individual phases of your God light. positive change around eclipses June 5 and June 21. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)…Tend your work this month, and make progress on projects already started. Stir the pot, reconnect with old contacts, ask how you can be helpful and, therefore, stay in their line of sight. Around June 17, as Mercury retrogrades, move with careful grace. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)…Take the opportunity to learn anything possible as the month begins. Whether online or through your metaphysics, connect to a larger web of information. Heal the past if memories arise, but don’t get stuck there; instead, warm hearts in the present moment. Diffuse drama around June 25.

JUNE HOROSCOPE

Sunlight & Delays Mercurial Messages through the Zodiac BY HEATHER ROAN ROBBINS SPRING FEVER CALLS US out to frolic while the virus keeps close to home; the planets and politics now expose tension between our restlessness and need for safety. We’re heading into the depth of retrograde season, when delays crop up and ask us to reminisce, process the past few months, and see if we can improve the situation. As June begins Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto are all retrograde; Mercury retrogrades June 17-July 12 and Neptune joins them June 22. As planets back over the territory they covered in the last few months, we get a chance to learn from our actions, if we choose that path. If there isn’t enough emotional stimulation coming in during quarantine, we could go back to past emotionally painful moments, reigniting old emotional scripts just for that interpersonal charge. Let’s not. It’s not time to push forward, nor to lean on old scars, but to review, rebuild, reassess, reorganize and complete. A lunar eclipse in Sagittarius punctuates the need for freedom on June 5. Summer begins on June 20 at 4:43 pm CDT, followed by a solar eclipse just after midnight. Choose away from drama and towards healthy shifts. Jupiter and Pluto conjunct three times this year, once this June 29. Together they ask us how we define freedom (Jupiter) and assess our priorities (Pluto). In this hopefully unique time, it’s painfully clear 1 0  WWW.EDGEMAGAZINE.NET

what we don’t have, and essential to notice what we do have, where we are unusually free, and make the most of it. Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)…Work on your relationships, communication, go over agreements and meetings, clear up any tension from the past. Mars enters Aries on June 27 and for the next six months, which can either power you forward or cause storms, depending on how you work with it. Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20)…To feel more in control, deal with worries about the material world by taking care of what you can; repair, plant, build, take care of your first resource — your body and health. Take every opportunity to heal, rather than reinscribe, past problems. Gemini (May 21-June 20)…Enjoy the buzz as June begins. Further the conversation, but keep heart and mouth connected. Slow down while Mercury retrogrades after June 17; introspect and tend to unfinished business. Think before speaking or taking a risk. Cancer (June 21-July 22)…Support your long-term health, but keep your focus on what brings you joy and creativity in early June. Encourage calm around an unsettling lunar eclipse June 5. Old connections reawaken after June 17. Lead by example after June 22. Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)…Even in quarantine you can help create community by connecting people and weaving the web. Your mood can set the tone for the house, so notice what energy you put out. Turn a challenge into

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)…As you come to understand what’s going on behind-thescenes, in the depths of people’s feelings and fears, just keep people focused on truth rather than mere suspicion. Instead of railing against stupidity, help calm the waters June 2 and 6 as Mars squares Venus and the sun. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)…Be thoughtfully cautious June 5. It’s so important for you not to feel hemmed in, even under quarantine; get really creative. Don’t get sloppy with health, but do explore when you can, and let your mind travel to faraway places. Bring back fresh ideas to share with beloveds. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan.19)…Check your health regime and build up lungs and breath; consider tai chi or qigong as the month begins. Major plans may be on hold, but this allows for a deep, personal agenda in the year ahead. Check in on and be there for others June 20-22. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)…You’re good at entertaining yourself, and you can stay busy when others spin their wheels. Work may not be going as expected, but engage opportunities for unusual projects. Look for an opportunity, because someone else couldn’t make it around the last week of June. Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)…Empath, strengthen your psychic boundaries; know what is your pain and joy, and what belongs to others. Diagnose problems, rather than suffer. Roll with experiences, and be ready to let go of old resentments or outdated ambition June 11-17 as Mars conjuncts Neptune. a HEATHER ROAN ROBBINS is a heart-centered and choice-oriented astrologer, palmist and ceremonialist with 30+ years’ experience. If It’s NOT OKAY to Say It to Someone Else, It’s NOT OKAY to Say It to Yourself BY MARIANNE INGHEIM Adapted from the book Out of Love: Finding Your Way Back to Self-Compassion

I THOUGHT I HAD to be self-critical. If I wasn’t, who knew what would happen, what bad things I’d do, what a loser I’d be? I didn’t know any other way. Like most of us, I learned to be self-critical from family, church, school and other elements of my environment. I learned to tell myself critical and disempowering stories, which, at their core, were rooted in a single fear: that I’d never be good enough. I grew up in a strict Seventh-day Adventist home, believing that I was deeply flawed. My parents did their best, as all parents do, but they had learned to be self-critical, and they passed that on to my sister and me. My Danish grandmother was a highly critical person, and although I loved her dearly, I never felt I could live up to her expectations. My mother was depressed throughout my childhood — her marriage to my father was falling apart (and eventually did) — and as a symptom of the dysfunction, our little family moved continuously from one place to the other, mostly back and forth between Denmark and America.

MOVING CONSSTANTLY As an adult, I perpetuated this pattern, moving constantly, and escaping in other ways, too: alcohol, achieving, and codependent romantic relationships. I was sure uncertainty was the thing to avoid, so I tried to control my environment with endless list making, worrying disguised as planning, and performing disguised as high achievement. I struggled to make sense of a critical God and church that seemed misaligned with who I wanted to be, until I finally left the Seventh-day Adventist church in 2013. Doing so was part of a gradual paradigm shift, a move away from the critical stories

that had surrounded me throughout my childhood. I hadn’t always been so self-critical. My mother tells me that at the age of 2, when asked how old I was, I would reply, “Two years wonderful!” — and then I would hug myself and flash my biggest smile, because I knew I was wonderful. Self-criticism is learned. The good thing about that is we can unlearn it! For me, the game changer was the practice of self-compassion. I first heard about this in a Sounds True interview with Dr. Kristin Neff. After listening to that conversation, I read Dr. Neff’s book, Self-Compassion — and it changed my life. In her definition of self-compassion, there are three elements: self-kindness (instead of self-judgment), mindfulness (instead of over-identification), and common humanity (instead of isolation).

WHO WE ARE We all tell ourselves stories about who we are. Many of these stories are self-critical and disempowering. However, we can choose to tell new stories that are empowering. We can stake our claim as heroes in our own lives. We can practice self-compassionate storytelling that heals our core wound of unworthiness and returns us to our courageous hearts, which were never really lost, just buried underneath conditioned thinking. Through the practice of self-compassion, we can become more authentic and powerful versions of ourselves, transforming not only our own lives but also the lives of those around us. What stories do you tell yourself about who you are? Does your story help you live a courageous life? If not, why do you tell yourself that story? Sometimes life stops you in your tracks and forces you to take a good look at who you’ve become. My wake-up call came in

August 2016 when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. After a double mastectomy and a lot of soul searching, I realized I had not been happy for many years, and I needed to make some big changes in order to live a more meaningful life. One of these changes was to leave my husband of almost 10 years. In my marriage, I had perpetuated the pattern of surrounding myself with critical people. My husband did the best he could, considering the challenges he faced, but I found myself stifled in our relationship, unable to grow into the person I wanted to be. For months I agonized about how to tell him I was leaving. I knew it would break his heart, and I desperately wanted not to do that. Finally, on a February day in 2017, with the help of a counselor, I told him. Later that night, I received a call from the sheriff’s department. There had been a car crash in West Oakland. A concrete pillar. He died instantly.

SUICIDE NOTE When I returned to our apartment, I found a suicide note and two Google map printouts of the crash site. The counselor, our friends, our family, me — we were all in shock. There’d been no signs. That must have meant it was my fault. It had all happened in rapid succession within the course of six months — the breast cancer diagnosis and double mastectomy, the difficult decision to leave my husband, his subsequent suicide. How was I ever going to make sense of all this? How was I ever going to live without blaming myself every day for my husband’s death? In the fall of 2017, I went back to school for my Ph.D., determined to study how self-compassion can help us move through transitions, because that’s what self-com➤ see NOT OKAY on p. 14

‘We Ignite Together’ to Spark Growth The Edge Interview with Rev. Janice ‘Hope’ Gorman BY TIM MIEJAN

AS UNIQUE SOULS having a spiritual experience in a third-dimensional world, sometimes we forget where we come from, and to whom we are connected. Rev. Janice “Hope” Gorman of Hope Interfaith Center in Mankato does not. After having experienced multiple walk-ins of different souls into her body, Hope knows at a deep level that many souls embodied today come from the stars and are an integral part of the universal community. To remind people of their connections to star systems, she presented the debut Star Gathering at her center last June, and she had intended to bring the public together for another such gathering this summer, until the pandemic arrived. So this year people will join from the comfort of their own homes. The two-day virtual conference, “We Ignite Together,” will take place June 13-14 via video conferencing, and pricing includes one or two-day viewing, with special bonuses. The Edge spoke with Hope about the unique time we find ourselves in and about the event that will bring people together to celebrate their spiritual connections. How is your quarantine going? Rev. Janice "Hope" Gorman: You know what? We’re doing pretty good. I thought that my quarantine and my isolation would give me a little bit more time off, but it hasn’t. I think there is a big spiritual thing going on here, an awakening, and we’re at the crossroads of choice. So the Universe is saying, “Okay, choose again. What choice do you want right now?” I’m quite excited, really, about this time. I am always a person who believes that the heart can be the golden ticket to a new reality — and if we go into our heart space we will stand tall and we will come out of this different than we went into it. For someone who may be a bit fearful about this whole experience, how can they go into their heart and what can they do once they’re there? I think that’s a great question. It was asked to me last night when I was doing another broadcast. I tell people to be still and to be in the present moment, and consider how one tiny, but powerful, little virus has made the whole world stand still. It has given us an opportunity to just be still. So, I tell people that in the dawn, right when you are waking up, spend five to ten minutes just being still and go into your heart space. Just with that intention, 1 2  WWW.EDGEMAGAZINE.NET

Rev. Janice “Hope” Gorman you will be there. And then a couple times during the day, just stop, be present within the moment, and have the intention and say out loud the words, “I’m going to go into my heart space. I’m going into my heart space. Be still. I’m okay. I’m going into my heart space.” The intention of that frequency or vibration will put you in that heart space. Then in the dusk before you fall asleep, do the same thing. I believe you’re wiring and firing new programs into your body when you do that. This process is very simple. It’s time to go back to spirituality in a very simple way right now. Let’s talk about your virtual event that replaces the Star Gathering this year. I find it quite exhilarating because the transformation that has taken place is that it is going to be a summit called “We Ignite Together.” It is a welcoming platform for everyone, but particularly star beings and star seeds and walk-ins, and anyone who might be interested in finding out whether they are a star being or a walk-in. On Saturday, June 13, we are going to have speakers from across the nation. Caroline Oceana Ryan, will be speaking about creating the new world, and she is from California. Garrett Duncan, who is 100 percent Navajo from New Mexico is going to be speaking about star children. And you might know Shirley B (Bolstock) who will speak about DNA activation, the I Am attunement, and she is from Colorado. And Yvonne Perry will speak about walk-ins. They will be presenting 30-minute pre-recorded teachings. On Sunday, June 14, is VIP Day, which

will include a live Zoom with Q&A with Caroline Oceana Ryan and Garret Duncan. In addition, Tammy and Anthony Chino from New Mexico — a very dynamic, young couple who work with star seeds, especially adolescents and young adults — will bring out their crystal bowls and instruments and present the “Sonic Boom Cosmic Sound Bath.” It literally changes your DNA. If people sign up for the VIP Day, they have a special bonus gift on Monday of meeting two young women, Amy and Janelle, called Sisters Rising, and they’re going to do meditation and Reiki. It is all designed as a platform to raise our consciousness and help activate the new strands of DNA. So what is the new DNA? The new aspects of our DNA give you a repertoire of more advanced perceptual abilities of remote viewing, clairsentience, clairaudience, all the “clairs.” It wakes you up to a higher frequency. And when one person raises their frequency and their vibration to a higher frequency of love, the whole collective goes up to that frequency of love. Collaboration is the name of the game right now. I was told a long time ago, “You are never supposed to do a gig by yourself, Hope. You are always supposed to work in collaboration with the Collective Consciousness to bring peace on the Earth.” If people tune into this, they will find that no matter what is happening or how frustrated they might be, or how confused they might be, or how scary this crisis might be, fear does not have the final say. Love can and will have the final say as we get through this. Give me a recap of the most revealing information that came out of last year’s Star Gathering. The most revealing information and/or guidance from last year’s Star Gathering was that during the exposure of all of these eclectic teachers and activations, we literally had five walk-ins that happened in that room and at that gathering. We came to realize that many, many walk-ins are coming to Earth at this time. So, this year we wanted to open up the door to not just having star beings come in, but have walk-ins be welcomed, as well. I certainly remember Christina Rose inviting me to Walk-In International and we went to one in England and Colorado. The other revealing thing was that people felt secure and safe to be in that expansive consciousness together. When you’re in a room where people are allowing you to be your authentic, expansive self,

magic happens. People started speaking in light language — I mean, absolutely, the whole room started speaking in light language —and I think that the great awakening to their higher abilities came out and stayed with them. We always check in with the people to see if an activation or opening to their abilities stayed open for them. We received tremendous feedback on all of those about how they shifted into a new experience. For a person who is going to have a walk-in come into their body, do they have a conscious sense of that before it happens? Yes, I think some do. They feel like it is happening before it happens. I have had multiple walk-ins, and they were all contractual. I wrote that assignment up for myself before I came to this planet. So, a lot of people can feel it. For some people, when they see the word “walk-in” — and they think, “Huh, what’s that?” — or even when they see the word “star beings” or “star seed,” they’re interested and they are literally pulled forward through their magnetic grid. That’s when you know something is cooking and a walk-in could be occurring or is about to occur. It puts them in a safe place for it to happen, and it connects them with people who understand what is happening for them and to them. ➤ see IGNITE on p. 14

passion has been doing for me, day by day. Change isn’t easy. It can be a slow and arduous process, very much like the process of metamorphosis that changes a caterpillar into a butterfly. In one of the four stages, the soon-to-be butterfly turns itself into mush, dissolving all the old to make room for the new. Likewise, I’ve had to let go of the past in order to embrace the new and accept feeling like mush sometimes. As we allow the process of transformation to move through us, we must be gentle with ourselves. We can’t control what happens, but we can choose what story to tell about it, and that makes all the difference.

MY BEST SELF In August 2018, two years after my cancer diagnosis, I remarried and became a stepmom. My second husband, Daniel, loves me for who I am and inspires me to be my best self. He gives me room to grow. As in all relationships, of course, there are challenges. What’s so amazing about self-compassion is that I can be the container for myself, taking care of me even when the world around me seems to be falling apart. Knowing that I can do this emboldens me to make authentic, vulnerable choices, like breaking my heart open and loving again. Have you experienced a “wake-up call”? Are you living the life you feel you were meant to live? If not, is something or someone holding you back?

It sounds like there is a window of opportunity for more walk-ins to come in. Why do you think that’s happening now? For a long time the Earth has been calibrating and accelerating in its planetary frequencies. Scientists tell us that not only is the Earth frequency accelerating, but there are changes in the sun and the stars and the entire solar system as a result of this accelerated frequency, It’s providing a pathway for us to expand, to wake up, to upgrade into a level of consciousness within that energy. Many of us at this time, if not all of us, are taking a quantum leap in our evolution right now upon the planet — though some will be leaving the planet, just as we’ve been told. For those who are walking in, this increased frequency provides them a platform, and safety. When I had my walk-ins, I believed that I was a little bit crazy. I couldn’t quite understand it. I didn’t know who I was or what it was. I just had to allow it to take place. The new frequencies open up the veils to allow this process to come through. Have you received any specific information about the overarching purpose for this virus that’s affected us? I have, but it’s not any different from what most awakened people are receiving and perceiving. It is waking us up to possibilities. It is opening up a gateway to be still, to go within. Just as the Hopi elders say, this is the 1 4  WWW.EDGEMAGAZINE.NET

My new book, Out of Love: Finding Your Way Back to SelfCompassion, is from my heart to yours, dear reader. I wrote it because I wanted to share the best tools for practicing self-compassion that I have picked up in my journey. I hope to inspire you to choose self-compassion — for doing so is a choice, and we must make it again and again in order to unlearn the pattern of self-criticism we learned from a young age. For me, this pattern manifests as perfectionism, worry, performance anxiety, social anxiety, and addiction. For you, it might be something else. My book is about my journey of unlearning these self-critical patterns and returning to my self-compassionate heart. Perhaps you, too, have struggled with self-criticism and shame. Or perhaps you have struggled to make sense of tragedies and traumas without blaming yourself.

SELF-COMPASSION The practice of self-compassion has taught me to deal with bodyimage issues after cancer and the guilt around my husband’s death, manage anxiety and stress, be authentic in relationships, make choices in alignment with my values, let go of comparison and be truly creative, cultivate my intuition and speak my truth, and so much more! Above all, self-compassion has shown me that belonging is something I already have — within myself. Self-compassion is a practice, meaning there’s no end point. There’s never going to be a time when you have it figured out and you can cross it off your list. You will fall down and into old, self-critical habits. I did.

eleventh hour and the river is running fast. Know where your water is coming from. Be still and know your beloved community. Be still and love yourself and all others. Be still and grow your garden. Be still. And, that Hopi philosophy of the elders is very much apropos for this time. Be silent and be present and ask some important questions about what is intrinsically important at this time as we go forward as a collective. What I tell people is that the intentional energy right now is important. It’s not about knowing what you don’t want; it’s knowing what you do want now. The high-caliber teachers we are bringing together will be saying this is the time to ignite your intentions, your dreams, your wants, and your wishes. Everybody has a different word for it. Jerry and Esther Hicks would always talk to Abraham, saying now is the time to draw your rockets of desire. Christine Day says this is the time to set your intentions and put them out there. As an astrology person, I know this is the time to take a look at your yes’s and take a look at your no’s and see where you authentically want to say your yes’s and say where you want to authentically say your no’s. Have your vision of a new reality and relentlessly go forward, one day at a time, towards making that vision a reality. It’s a time to use discernment. It’s a time to have healthy boundaries. It’s a time to have healthy relationships. As the Hopi elders say, it’s a time to “know where your water is coming from and grow your gardens and love one another.” It’s the time.

➤ see NOT OKAY on p. 16

Is there anything else we haven’t talked about that you would like to share with our readers at this time? Have no fear — and if you do, say your mantras, go to the sun and the moon and the stars at night, and ask the elders from the sky who know what’s going on. Ask the masters from the sky who are right by them, as well, to help you during this time, to guide you during this time. Listen to the intuitive instructions that are coming through at this time; put your attention on the inside of them — and follow that. Just don’t listen to it, follow it. It’s a time to be silent and listen within. It is. The cosmic wisdom is inside, and it can be ignited especially when we come together, because you can’t be with these people when they come together and not be ignited to go within, to your internal, eternal power and to demonstrate that energetically upon the planet. It is about being quiet, going inside and listening to that intuition that lies within. a For more information on “We Ignite Together” and Hope Interfaith Center, visit www.hopeinterfaithcenter.com. Bad Decisions BY JAMES & STEPH PURPURA An excerpt from Perception: Seeing Is Not Believing

WHAT IF WE TOLD YOU that you have never made a bad decision? Would that sound strange to you? Would you believe us? What if we said you were fully justified in all your actions and behaviors because you were always doing your best, even when you often did and thought things that were against your own and others’ best interests? Yes, you often fall short of your potential, but we still say you have never made a bad decision. What if we also told you that nothing that has ever happened to you is your fault, but also told you that your outcomes are 100 percent your responsibility? What if we told you that not only have you never made a bad decision, but you’re not actually capable of making bad decisions unless you’re a sociopath or mentally ill? Consider this: If it is true that you have never made a bad decision, what would this mean to you and your life? We often look back and second-guess or beat ourselves up for opportunities we missed, decisions we botched, and times we quit or fell short. The voice in your head may be saying, “How could I be so stupid?” Or, “Why do I keep making the same mistakes over and over?” It’s time to stop beating yourself up, because in reality you’re just doing the best you can. You are probably saying to yourself, “Okay, this sounds great, but it’s hard to believe because I feel like I have made bad decisions.” We will let you off the hook and explain. If your life has not gone the way you wanted or expected, it was because you made decisions using bad information. You might be wondering, “Okay, what is the difference? It seems like it’s only semantics.” Actually, it’s a big difference, and understanding the difference can set you free. If your life is not what you want it to be, it’s not because you have done anything wrong, it’s because you made the only deci-

sions you could with the information you had available to you at the time. You have probably never started a decision-making process by saying, “I think I will do something today that is not in my best interest.” To be clear, always doing the best you can on any given day is not the same as living up to your potential. We all make decisions the same way. Our minds look at all the available information and draw conclusions about the best path forward. We never intentionally set out to make decisions that will harm us. In that moment when we make a decision, we believe it is in our best interest, even if it doesn’t turn out that way. This is why it’s so important to understand the difference. While you may have blamed yourself in the past whenever things went wrong, the problem was never you. The problem was the information you used to define your life and make your decisions. That means there is nothing wrong with you! Everyone has problems, just like you. Some people are just too scared to talk about them. We are happy to reassure you that life does not have to continue to be a fight or a struggle. There is hope, even in the darkest of times. We also need you to understand that you are good enough and smart enough today, just the way you are. Believe it or not, you currently have everything you need to be successful and to feel truly happy and fulfilled. It’s time to stop beating yourself up. a JAMES AND STEPH PURPURA met at the lowest point in their lives. They were financially, emotionally and spiritually bankrupt. Life had beaten them down and shattered their self-esteem. They were united by a shared vision of creating and becoming more. They started the only place they could by working on themselves and helping each other grow. Fast forward 15 years: after many ups and downs and a lot of hard work, Steph and James sold their tech company, one of the world’s largest construction software companies, and live an extraordinary life. Birthing a Reset From the Heart BY ALAN COHEN
THE WORLD IS NOT the same place it was just a few months ago. The pandemic and economic downturn have put humanity’s activities on pause and caused nearly everyone to make significant lifestyle changes. We are required to stay home, conduct business from our living room, homeschool and face family issues we have shoved under the rug for a long time. We are commanded to not touch each other or our faces. Just a short time ago no one imagined any of this would happen. When the pandemic began, I wondered “What good could possibly come of this?” Now some answers are obvious. For one, we are present with our families at a new depth. A friend sat on her porch and enjoyed a meaningful two-hour conversation with her 14-year-old son, an interaction that would never have happened otherwise. A Japanese woman who had a big argument with her parents before she went on a trip has returned to live with them, and has made peace with them unlike ever before. A Portuguese woman who was denied entry to England for a work visa discovered two frail elderly people in her apartment building, who she is now cooking for, and picking up prescriptions. People are connecting with old friends and new acquaintances from far reaches of the globe via Zoom. We are valuing loved ones we belittled and jobs we once complained about. Meaningful moments are happening that we were too busy to enjoy. It takes a lot to get our attention, but this event has succeeded. Let us reframe it not as a curse, but as a wake-up call. Albert Einstein said, “In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity.” “What can I do to maintain my inner peace and help others?”

As I was writing this book, I decided to do two things that ended up being really bad experiments: I quit the anxiety medication I’d been taking for 10 years, and I started to drink wine again after being sober for six years. Like I said, bad experiments. In the end I had to quit alcohol and start medication again, because that was the self-compassionate thing to do. I beat myself up about it at first. I wanted so badly to be “normal,” and I thought I’d made such good progress. The truth is, I had — but here’s the thing about anxiety or addiction: they don’t magically disappear. This is who I am, and a big part of self-compassion practice is accepting myself exactly as I am. Only then, paradoxically, can I change. One of the exercises in my book is about noticing our critical self-talk so that we can learn to speak kindly to ourselves. I include it here with the fervent hope that it helps you in your journey toward self-compassion. Here are examples of critical self-talk: “You’re fat and ordinary.” “Sit up straight, otherwise your belly looks big.” “Don’t you feel horrible right now with those large thighs and your horse’s hips?” In a French Dove commercial, women were asked to write down the random 1 6  WWW.EDGEMAGAZINE.NET

we ask. “How can I use this experience to improve the quality of my life after the lockdown has been lifted? Who am I as I now recognize I am united with every other person on the planet in a common goal?” The answer is simple: Be the light amidst apparent darkness. Your joy, gratitude and creative self-expression serve humanity and the planet far more than anxiety. Misery has enough company. The world needs people whose minds are clear, confident and connected to Higher Power. We have meditated, prayed, done yoga, sat at the feet of gurus and aligned our chakras at Sedona vortexes. Now is the time to put our training into action. Boot camp is over. Now we must apply what we know and live the teachings instead of just talking about them, waiting for non-physical entities to save us, or hoping our kundalinis will rise. It’s showtime. The pandemic will pass and the economy will recover. But we will have experienced an event unprecedented in human history: a planetary reset. We will have reprioritized our values and recognized the preciousness of our lives and those we love. We will be glad we have jobs to go to, schools to educate our children, the ability to venture out of our homes, the exhilaration of walking in nature, and the safety to touch each other. Things we now take for granted or even complain about will reveal themselves to be blessings. Let us rise to higher and abiding appreciation for the immense good in our lives. Let us use our time and experience wisely. The beginning is near. a ALAN COHEN is the author of many inspirational books including A Course in Miracles Made Easy. thoughts they had about themselves throughout the day. These thoughts were then turned into lines in a script for two actresses posing as guests in a coffee shop. The original women were invited to the coffee shop to hear their own harsh words spoken out loud. People in the coffee shop, overhearing the conversation between the actresses, were shocked. “Excuse me,” one woman said. “That’s really violent what you’re saying to her.” It was violent. And it’s what many of us do to ourselves every day. Our inner critic is a bully. It criticizes everything about us, not only our appearance, though that is one of its favorite areas to criticize. It says things like: I totally suck at ____. You’re so stupid! Who do you think you are? What is wrong with me? Why am I so lazy? What a screw-up! What makes you think you can ____ ? Why can’t I be like ____ ? I’m always such a mess. I can’t do anything right. The inner critic likes to use words like always and never. It likes comparing us to other people. It asks rhetorical questions, most of which start with the word why. It calls us names: idiot, screw-up, loser. It can

also be subtle, a smooth talker, saying nice things to undermine us: “You don’t need to do that right now. You’re tired. You have a headache.” It’s a pro at self-sabotage: “Go ahead and have another drink. It’s been a long day.” Self-criticism is pervasive, unhelpful, and not even true. It undermines our physical and mental health, as well as our ability to live to our full potential. So, what can we do about it? The first step is becoming aware of what we’re saying to ourselves. Often our self-criticism is unconscious, so we must first catch ourselves thinking these thoughts. Then we can begin replacing them with positive ones through the practice of self-compassion. The bottom line is this: if it’s not acceptable to say to someone else, it’s not acceptable to say to ourselves. For the next week, notice when you’re being self-critical or feeling bad about yourself. Write down what your inner critic is saying as accurately as possible. What are the actual words you use to talk to yourself? What are the areas in which you are critical of yourself? a MARIANNE INGHEIM is a Danish-Norwegian American writer, teacher, and Ph.D. student at the California Institute of Integral Studies. Seeking Higher Ground: I am not My Negative Thoughts BY

KATHRYN TRISTAN

ACCORDING TO A Chinese proverb, “That the birds of worry and care fly over your head, this you cannot change. That they make nests in your hair, this you can prevent.” During these times of great worry, anxiety and stress it is easy to succumb to negative thoughts that seem to overwhelm us. However, we are not those thoughts! Worry is an ancient response that has evolved over millions of years to help us. Nature only intended this as a means to warn us of possible dangers, not to doom us into becoming eternally frazzled. When we become the negative thoughts entering our minds, we have chosen to believe what is percolating there, rather than evaluating it. Worry thoughts cascade as if on a conveyor belt and become faster and more abundant as we pay attention to them. Before we ever know it, our heart starts racing, we become short of breath and quickly enter fight-or-flight mode. As a scientist and author of two selfhelp books on overcoming worry and

anxiety, my truth comes from experience and practice. I found out early in life that my scientific brain, which assisted me in studying and better understanding the immune system, did not really help me with most of my problems. An over-analytical mind wants to over think, over worry, and ultimately over react. Only after suffering from anxiety for a number of years did I put that scientific mind to better use. Once I realized I was not the thunderous thoughts that constantly roared inside, I learned how to tone down the voice that said, “I can’t” and “it’s awful,” and turn up the truer one that said, “I can” and “I’ll handle it.” Here’s the kicker: while worry thoughts grab your attention and can be quite deafening, the inner dialog of peacefulness whispers. To tune into the higher, happier part of us, we need to go within and become quiet and serene. Only then can our truer guidance be heard. Meditation, or even taking quiet moments out of our day, allows us to tap into this inner power: the power of awareness and choice.

By first becoming aware of our thoughts, we can then choose to enter into a peaceful state of mind that provides more productive, realistic and loving strategies for overcoming our challenges. Changing our mental dialogue also resets our inner biochemistry. Thoughts have power. That power can make you miserable or help you transcend into a state of higher awareness that provides inner directions for handling necessary issues, sailing past negativity and becoming a standard bearer and example to others. As I began to speak about this subject, I interacted with many people who were working through challenges and seeking higher ground. After one of my talks, a young lady came up to me, and we started chatting. She had stopped by the bookstore to take a break from a nearby children’s hospital where her young daughter was being treated for a fatal condition. The words that came out of her mouth shocked me. She said, “I am so grateful for the wonderful nurses and doctors who are helping my daughter through this. Even my ex-husband and his wife and I have come together to help our daughter.” Later that day, I reflected on this and thought it was amazing that she could feel gratitude about anything! Certainly she was not grateful she would soon lose her precious daughter, but even in her darkest time she found a glimmer of light and focused on that. We are not our negative thoughts. We are beings of pure light and love inside. When we can tap into that higher, happier part of us, despite life’s trials and tribulations, we will remain in our spiritual zone, the one that loves life no matter what life throws at us. The lesson for me, and I hope for all of us, is to concentrate on what’s right, not what’s wrong, and to focus what we can do, not what we can’t. Awakening Practice BY WENDY

BROWN-BAEZ WHEN THE BUDDHA was asked if he was a god, his response was, “I am awake.” What does it mean to be awake? It means to be present in the moment and aware that we are spiritual beings having a human experience. To be awake is to connect the spiritual and human aspects of life. We do this by making choices of where to place our attention. As human beings, we experience physical and emotional discomfort. We are subject to the natural laws of planet earth such as gravity and seasons. Our spiritual self is unlimited, eternal, created in the image of the One, filled with gratitude, compassion and joy. We believe that everything is infused with the holy. We are all connected, part of one web of life. The Divine or The Source or The One is mystery and ineffable because Divinity is beyond our human ability to describe. The arts bypass the logical to point to the miraculous, what is beyond human comprehension and indescribable. They activate our senses to transcend them and therefore, have a deep impact on us. How do we cultivate presence in daily life, through ordinary circumstances? How do we hold onto the belief in Divine Order and Divine Love when our lives are collapsing? Where do we find solace when our lives derail? When we are blindsided by betrayal, loss, illness and upheaval? When we are struggling to survive? We are not our circumstances. We are spiritual beings capable of accessing the Divine within. We are all capable of attuning ourselves to our own inner wisdom and the potential to live from our highest self. Many of us know the value of paying attention in the moment. Mindfulness includes paying attention to breath and body, to movement and stillness, and to our senses, with acceptance and without judgement. Can we pay attention during the ordinary moments of our day? When we are engaged in other activities, such as walking or driving, cooking or cleaning, speaking on the phone, typing on the computer, taking out the garbage? Take a pause and notice where and how you are sitting or standing. In a monastery, a bell is rung on the hour to remind the monks to stop and pray. Can we set our internal clock to remind us to pay attention to this moment? Pause your busy mind and focus on what you are experiencing in your body, and especially your breath. Writing is a part of my daily spiritual practice. Writing opens our hearts so that we can be authentic. When healing from emotional wounds or coping with depression and/ or anxiety, writing can guide us to greater self-awareness and self-acceptance. It can help 1 8  WWW.EDGEMAGAZINE.NET

us self-regulate in order to alleviate stress. It can access inner guidance. We can let down the façade and explore what we yearn for, what our passions are, and what gives us solace and spiritual nourishment. What I learned is that when I write, there are two paths. One will take me deeper into the story: what happened to me and how I feel about it. There is no end to that branch of the story, because the emotional pull is powerful. Or I can choose another branch: what it means, what patterns I see, where it leads me, what has been the lesson, how I can change and transform. Where do I find inner courage and strength, what are my blessings? After experiencing profound loss in my life, I deliberately chose that branch over and over. I began to heal and eventually to experience real joy. An inner knowing that I am where I am meant to be, that I am connected to others in deep ways and that I love my life. I am blessed. I am grateful. When thoughts of fear, grief, despair and disempowerment overwhelm us, we can take out a journal and write: “In the silence I notice — and deliberately choose to follow my own insights rather than the emotional pull.” What are the hidden blessings in the moment? Who are you? Awaken to the Divine within you. a WENDY BROWN-BÁEZ is the creator of Writing Circles for Healing. Stop Animating what makes You Ache BY

GUY FINLEY

IF WE SEE HOW much of our unhappiness is self-created, through being inattentive to our own interior life, then accordingly, we can learn to redirect our attention, placing it where we will within what is right and bright. But, there is only one way to realize this reversal: we must work to see how wrongly directed attention works against us. Perhaps a thought pops into your mind about a problem that’s been bothering you. Appearing with it is some emotional disturbance. Now the thought starts rolling, growing in its demand for your attention. Almost instantly it has defined what needs to be done, or what you are powerless to do. And both states accomplish the same dark end: you’ve unknowingly animated that thought and given it a life — and the life you’ve given it is your own! Here’s an example of how this scene might unfold: A man is walking through his office when his boss walks by and gives him a blank look. The thought pops into the man’s mind that his boss is criticizing him or doesn’t like him. Now, as he starts to fear this idea — a negative picture produced by his imagination — his mind focuses its attention on this disturbing image. And the more he attends to this dark dream, the further into its labyrinth he descends, strengthening its presence and power to further irritate him. A heartbeat later, he has no doubt: the boss has it in for him! This thought grows in authority for him, tormenting him for the rest of the day and causing him to snap at his family when he gets home. And all of this suffering is born of what? The conjunction of a passing glance and a moment of misdirected attention!

THIS WHOLE DRAMA Here’s the amazing thing about this illustration, and what we want to learn from it: this whole drama has been played out inside of the man — storyline, stage, cast and leading characters. But he doesn’t see how this painful state is self-created; instead he believes it has been cast upon him by someone else — his heartless boss! So, what else can he do — being in the dark as he is to his true condition — but try to rid himself of his stressed feelings? How? By arguing with his boss, either outwardly or in his mind. The more he feels punished by the situation that he sees in his mind, the more he wants to fight with it. He’s sure his unwanted experience exists independent of his perception of it, but we can see he’s mistaken. His pain is a product of how he sees the event and then all of the misery that comes with resisting his

own mistaken perception. He is quite literally lashing himself, and the more he resists what he thinks is happening, the more it happens to him! This is a good description of what I call the “circle of self.” In it we can see how the pain of our own mistaken perception literally produces the enemies it needs to keep itself alive. From our vantage point, we can see how his unattended mind first animated a fearful thought, which leads to wrongly feeding it with his own life. We can also see that nothing can change for him until he sees the truth behind his trouble and withdraws his consent from it. We suffer because we consort with painful thoughts and feelings, thinking somehow that not wanting them makes them “go away.” But our unconscious actions betray us: first, by animating what makes us ache, and then by binding us to that relationship through our resistance to it. Here’s a simple way of saying these last few ideas: not wanting our negative states actually nourishes them! I can almost hear the question that comes next: “Wait a minute! You can’t be saying these dark thoughts and feelings are good, and that we should want what’s hurting us, are you?” Of course not! Negative states have no right to exist in us as they presently do. And that’s just the point. We literally give them a place to live in our psychic system — feed them, as it were — by trying to rid ourselves of them in the usual ways. But there are other ways of dealing with pervasive dark states besides resisting them, suppressing them, or trying to change the conditions seen as being responsible for them. Instead of these acts of willfulness, we choose in favor of watchfulness. Rather than struggling with dark states, learning to be quietly watchful of them does two things at once: first, it separates us from being wrongly identified with our own thoughts about that troublesome state. In addition — by the light of our newly liberated attention — we catch a glimpse of a powerful insight whose light helps set us free:

THAT SAME LIFE If we mistakenly give any negative state its “life” — then the opposite must hold true: we can consciously withdraw that same life any time we so choose! I offer you a simple exercise to help you get started with this new kind of seeing that is the power behind freeing you. Several times each day, whenever you can remember to do it, deliberately disconnect yourself from your own thinking. Choose awareness of your thoughts over being absorbed in the sensations they produce as they carry you along to get what they want. The aim here is simple: reclaim ➤ see STOP ANIMATING on p. 20 JUNE 2020 THE EDGE

The Tricky Truth about Thoughts KIRSTIN BARSNESS MONKEY MIND, THE land of misfit ideas, and the honey hole of inspiration. All these describe my mind on any given day, in any given moment. My mind’s worse than a 2 year old who’s fixated on the candy bar at the checkout line. Once it focuses in on a single thought, it’s hard to let go. Our thoughts can be tricky. Thoughts can run amok, willy-nilly through our minds causing all sorts of destruction. Or they can take us up soaring over an obstacle that dares to keep us from a goal. The key is to be aware of their power. I’ve a tendency to get sucked into my own story — fast — especially if the story has a hint of drama. I revel in the negativity or the emotional “poor me” and begin to create a fictional reality. There’s a real danger to doing this too often or for too long. My fictional reality becomes my true world. It can be overt, such as one bad encounter or a decision that doesn’t go my way leading to a “my life sucks” response. Next thing I know, this sucky thought is manifesting as an unplanned car repair, loss of a work project, stepping in something icky and ruining my favorite pair of sandals. Ever had a bad day and thought BY

this day’s awful, and the next thing you know your day was actually awful? Thoughts can be covert, too. Simply thinking, “Well, I can’t afford that” or “I never have any money,” is a real big deal. That one little thought expressed over and over again, like a habit, begins to manifest daily in your world. Getting caught up in the emotion of the moment or situation is normal. Everyone’s facing issues, and no one is exempt from life’s bumps and bruises. Where we need to bring in awareness and grace is when we get caught up in our own emotional cyclone. This is so hard, which is why awareness is the first step to breaking the cycle. I’m not saying you need to change your thoughts immediately. This is a bit dishonest, since you’re then not honoring your feelings, but just shoving them under the rug. Believe me, they scuttle out later if this is the approach used. The best way to start is to be aware. Catch yourself. If you’re being sucked into those negative thoughts, simply witness what’s happening. The trickier part is leaving the judgment piece checked at the door. Please don’t berate yourself because you got sucked in — we all do! The goal is awareness, witnessing the thought so we can change it.

your attention in order to be where you are, and then just quietly notice all that you can about yourself. The light of this new order of awareness empowers you to catch and release what your own unattended thoughts had been busy cooking up for you, using you as stock! Each time you remember to reclaim your attention in this manner, with it you regain your life. For extra profitable inner practice, learn to see the deception in any assumption that wants you to believe that there is no higher alternative to your suffering than to either run from it or simply endure it. Never listen to any pain that is asking you what to do 2 0  WWW.EDGEMAGAZINE.NET

Acknowledge how you feel. Holding any lower energy in your body for a long period of time will result in major health issues. Anger, jealousy and sadness will eat away at you over the long term, but in the moment that you feel it — live it, breathe it, acknowledge it, and then let it go. By doing this, you can release it more quickly. No one’s in a constant state of happy. Life’s messy, but this is how we grow, find our strengths and connect with others. Find the frigging rainbow. That’s how it’ll feel — you’ll not want to look for the good thing or upside. You’ll want to stay in the storm of your own mucky thoughts. Choose to be bold. Choose to be vulnerable. Choose to move forward. Start with one good thing to think about. It doesn’t need to be related to what’s going on right this moment. My default to get me out is my daughters. Just the thought of their smiles shifts my mood. Build the momentum. Once you have a thought that caused you to feel a bit lighter, choose another and another. Some days I’ve really had to reach for the good: I like my fingernails. I’m thankful for the triple-ply bath tissue. I have no moldy food in the refrigerator I must throw away. If I can make myself chuckle or smile at the ridiculous, I know I’m going to be okay. My mind chatters away all day. Through awareness, I’ve been able to stop destructive thoughts or catch habitual thoughts as they occur. I’ll never be a master, but I’ll have plenty of practice each day to improve. Untangling the Wreckage “Your mind and you are our Sargasso Sea, London has swept about you this score years And bright ships left you this or that in fee: Ideas, old gossip, oddments of all things, Strange spars of knowledge and dimmed wares of price.” — Portrait d’une Femme, Ezra Pound

Spirit Leaves BY JANET MICHELE RED FEATHER IN POUND’S Portrait of a Lady, a popular socialite becomes the hapless repository of wreckage left by her many admirers. Pound compares the lady, with her “sea-hoard of deciduous things,” to the Sargasso Sea, an ocean full of sunken ships with their tangled and motley cargo. In the end, nothing is “quite her own.” This is a great metaphor for the state of our mind when we allow it to amass too much clutter. With a little introspection and compassion for self, we can release the trash and harvest the treasure of the Higher Self. We are not our thoughts (thankfully!), because our essence is sacred. Every thought is, in one sense, part of the mind of God. Still, the human, living in duality consciousness, is not beaming Divine ideas 24/7. Self-check the anxious thought stream that occupies our idle, daily musings. We wonder whether any sticky viruses have somehow sought us out and latched on. We are concerned we might be caged inside for months as food, income and entertainments dwindle. We worry about growing old and how we look. We anticipate our partners or roommates becoming fed up with us. And we think in panic, “How the heck will I find housing in the midst of a pandemic crisis?” We’ve all heard of affirmations; it’s time we truly understood how to use them effectively. Performed thoughtfully, we can use them to silence doubts and fears and fill the mind with positive intentions. Wed those with positive emotions and we generate an irresistible, attractive, magnetic force field. The Universe responds in kind by delivering the best and highest. We soon find ourselves surrounded by all things pleasant and desired — things we ourselves

have manifested through harboring higher-sourced intentions. Another thought our mind likes to trick us with is the misguided idea that we are separate from the Oneness that created us: that is the greatest illusion of all. We tell ourselves in despair that we are all alone. We pretend to be “in control,” yet we feel helpless and anxious much of the time. We forget that we are, in reality, as tiny drops of water in a flowing river, gradually making our way back to the ocean of origin. This is Cedric Red Feather’s illustrative metaphor that still resonates within me 25 years later. We think we’re individual drops; once in the larger ocean, we are indistinguishable from all the other droplets. We’re in the midst of a great shift in consciousness. Reputable channelers tell us we are at the stage of convergence. The old duality of good and evil, light and dark, plenitude and scarcity, wisdom and ignorance — all these imagined schisms — keep us separate and at war with one another. Are we prepared to release duality consciousness? Are the thoughts in our minds limited by outdated notions of hierarchy and rules, or will we work to intensify ideas of love and compassion until all fears dissolve? Of course, we want to exercise common sense; yet during this pandemic, we’ve become conditioned to view each human being as a potential threat to our very

survival. Of course, we want to maintain social distance — but we can smile and be kind and reassuring in what we emanate. Privately, in our homes, we can spend some time contemplating the wisdom of Neem Karoli Baba, who suggested that we see every single being as “yet another mask of the Beloved.” By holding that thought, everyone becomes sacred and special to us. We begin clearing the mind of fear-driven thoughts and focus upon sending more positive, loving ones out into the world where they are strongly needed. We become loving and compassionate vessels of light, bright beacons for those mired in mental ships, adrift over dark, uncertain seas. That is the best way to expand, rather than stifle, the soul. a JANET MICHELE RED FEATHER, J.D., M.A., is a ceremonial singer who has learned over 60 traditional songs in Mandan and Lakota and sings in nine different languages. TRANSCENDING THOUGHTS But what Sarah learned from this experience was that it’s possible to be a pure channel for God and for the Holy Spirit and for the Inner Master without having to do anything outwardly at all — except for one thing: to sing HU inwardly with a pure heart. This must be with a pure heart. And by pure, I mean you don’t try to force the outcome by saying such things as, “Make my mom not feel so depressed and so sad anymore.” Because, as her mom was feeling this way, that had left Sarah confused and hurt, too. She didn’t know what to do or say.

A Lift for Depressing Thoughts BY SRI

HAROLD KLEMP SARAH WAS LIVING with her mom, Miriam, and Miriam was fighting depression. For no reason at all, she would just burst into tears. A waterfall would come gushing out, and there she was, just crying and crying. Sarah felt really bad about the whole thing, and she asked the Inner Master, the Mahanta, her spiritual guide, “Mahanta, what can I do to help my mom?” So she chanted HU aloud. (HU is a non-directed prayer, which means that we’re willing to let the Holy Spirit take care of the affairs in our life according to the divine plan instead of our personal plan.) Then Sarah talked to her mom, and she kissed her mom. And guess what? You guessed wrong. Her mom became angry. She did not like that. Don’t touch; keep away. So it didn’t help. This happened several times, and Sarah didn’t know what to do anymore. She wanted to help her mom, but she now knew not to talk or touch. So the next time, quietly, inwardly, Sarah began singing HU. She sang HU six or seven times or so. Her mom stopped crying. She just stopped.

DISCOVERING OPTIONS Everything was going okay. Sarah had come into the kitchen to help her mom make lunch. Then about half an hour after Miriam stopped crying, she looked at Sarah and said, “I wonder if my depression is due to the diabetic medicine I’m taking.” Sarah went online right away and checked it out. Sure enough, this was one of the side effects that this particular medicine could have. As some of you know, when any kind of medication is prescribed, you may get sheets listing contraindications and side effects. If you’ve ever read some of those things, they’re terrifying. And you don’t want to take anything. But sometimes it’s just a question of, “Okay, do you want to lose your eyesight, or do you want to take the meds?” Take the meds. That’s how it goes. Sometimes you can go back to the doctor and say, “I’m having this reaction. Is there another med you could recommend?” This, too, is always an option. Or, “Can I cut back? Is that an option?” There are so many options. You can try this or

CHANGING TO A HIGHER CONSCIOUSNESS If you want to lift yourself to a higher state of consciousness — so that the political issues, the family issues, the social issues of the day do not throw you out of balance, so that you can find a happier, more contented life while you’re living here — sing HU, the most beautiful prayer. Try this simple spiritual exercise to help you hear and see the two aspects of God: the Light and Sound. Go somewhere quiet. Sit or lie down in a comfortable place. Put your attention on your Spiritual Eye, a point just above and behind your eyebrows. With eyes lightly shut, begin to sing a holy word or phrase, such as HU, God, Holy Spirit, or Show me thy ways, O Lord. But fill your heart with love before you approach the altar of God, because only the pure may come. Be patient. Do this exercise for several weeks, for a limit of twenty minutes each time. Sit, sing, and wait. God speaks only when you are able to listen. a SRI HAROLD KLEMP is an award-winning author, teacher, and spiritual guide who helps seekers reach their full potential. Healing Life with Our Thoughts ‘I choose’ is where it all begins BY

JOHANNA KERN

BREATHE IN. BREATHE OUT. Let your next breath fill you up from your toes to your head. How does it feel to be aware of the cycle of your breathing? Our thought process revolves around the things we focus on at any given moment. Our thoughts come and go. They can be conscious or subconscious, running on automatic pilot. In the times of the current pandemic, it is easy to give in to fearful thoughts and keep perpetuating them round the clock. It is easy to get trapped in our own fear and unwillingly contribute to the degeneration of our physical and emotional health. Over many years of guiding and helping people with their health and emotional problems, spirituality, family issues, relationships etc., I have learned that our lives and our bodies can be healed from the inside out. In 2015, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to scientists Tomas Lindahl, Paul Modrich and Aziz Sancar for their breakthrough work on the molecular mechanisms of DNA repair processes, which could lead to a cure for cancer. Earlier, in an article by Dr. Bret Stetka published in Scientific American, studies on the effects of thoughts and emotions on our health that were conducted over decades by various scientists led to the conclusion that our minds can control our physiological functions and affect our DNA. Our DNA can repair itself. Our body can heal itself. We can take control over our thinking and let our thoughts become our allies. It isn’t as difficult as it seems. Negative thinking is a habit, and habits can be changed. Positive thinking, as any other thinking, is simply a result of our practice. First, we need to become conscious of how and when to think positively, then it becomes our habit, and later our habit becomes our lifestyle. As we choose something, and keep

repeating our intention, it will gradually happen. At a certain point, new neural pathways will be created in our brain. Here is how it works: • Our brain is built from neurons, among other things, and these neurons communicate with one another. Each of our thoughts invokes an emotion, which causes the production of a chemical substance, to which neurons react. • When we think new positive thoughts, we begin to produce different chemical substances, and new neural pathways in our brains are created. Just as we start creating a new shortcut through a field or a lawn, using a new and more comfortable path, the more we use this new path, the deeper and more visible it becomes. In the same way, the neural pathways created in our brain become a part of our life. For such a process to be effective, we need approximately six weeks. That is exactly the time needed for new neural pathways to be created and the old ones to disappear. It is very important to remember that when we are experiencing a hard, painful or dramatic situation, we shouldn’t try to convince ourselves that everything is peachy and perfect. Our subconscious will laugh at it, and reject such thinking. But we can always say what is true in a way that will be helpful in our situation. The statement “I choose” is a very powerful affirmation in itself. We can

slowly start changing our habitual thinking by affirming, for example, “I choose to feel better and happier inside. Each day, I will find a moment to concentrate on the beauty I can find around. I choose to make my day to be peaceful and joyous. I choose to see world as a friendly place. I choose health over worries and illness.” And then, after a few days, you can continue with similar statements, such as “Life can get better. There is always hope for a better tomorrow. I am letting myself to be stronger, happier and healthier, day after day. I know I can get through it. I can be strong. I can find beauty in each day. I choose to fill myself with Love and peace. All is good. I can relax and enjoy this moment.” a JOHANNA KERN is a transformational teacher and multiple award-winning author of Master and the Green-Eyed Hope, 365 (+1) Affirmations to Create A Great Life and Secrets of Love for Everyone.
