West Coburg are looking to make amends from last year’s Grand Final and thoroughly deserve their opportunity to do so after going through the regular season undefeated.
West Coburg will also have their Reserves side playing for ultimate glory when they go against Hillside, which is a terrific achievement and a testament to the depth they’ve created as they eye off their return to the top flight.
Over in Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division, we enter Preliminary Final week with Pascoe Vale and Strathmore playing at Highgate Reserve.
Pascoe Vale will be looking to bounce back from last week’s Semi Final defeat and will encounter a Strathmore side buoyed from a strong first outing against East Keilor.
Senior Men’s Grand Finals return to the spiritual home of EDFL football in Windy Hill with Rookie Me Division One Grand Final day on Saturday.
Deer Park booked the first spot in the decider and have been a wonderful addition to the EDFL both on and off field, and we look forward to seeing them on the big stage of Windy Hill.
Kicking off the day will be Coburg Districts and Craigieburn in the AGA Under 18.5 Division One decider.
Congratulations to all sides for their achievements throughout the season and best of luck for this weekend.
Congratulations also to Rupertswood who played in last week’s Preliminary Final and enjoyed a strong first EDFL Senior finals campaign.
Keilor awaits the victor who have been flawless in season 2023 and are one step away from replicating their perfect 2019 campaign.
It ensures to be an exhilarating weekend at the spiritual home of EDFL football.
Good luck to all teams, members, volunteers, umpires, and officials this weekend.

Keilor are one step closer to replicating their perfect 2019 season after yet another dominant performance in the Grand Final qualifier downing Pascoe Vale by 88 points at Coburg City Oval.
The Blues got out of the gates quick with typically slick ball movement and were able to halt Pascoe Vale’s transition to keep them to just two goals at half time.
Keilor would pile on the goals as they’ve done to sides all season, kicking four in the first, five in the second, four in the third, and seven in the fourth, registering 34 scoring shots to just 16 from Pascoe Vale.
Damien Cavka and Matthew Clark kicked four goals each with multiples to Christos Kosmas, Kyle O’Connor, Nathan Ellis, and Nick O’Kearney.
They’ll progress to Windy Hill and await the winner of Pascoe Vale and Strathmore.
Strathmore followed a similar trend to Keilor and capitalised on undisciplined acts from East Keilor to kick six first-quarter goals. Their explosiveness from inside to outside was a key feature as they were much cleaner around the ground than the Cougars were, especially delivering inside 50.
They managed 22 goals in a complete fourquarter performance to build nicely into a prelim.
2022 Reynolds Medalist Will Jury returned from VFL duties in a best-on-ground
performance kicking three goals and being his usual industrious self in the engine room.
Tom Condon (five goals), Kyle Weightman (four goals), Athan Tsialtas (three goals), and Daniel Mammoliti (three goals) comprised a prolific hybrid forward line for Strathmore in which East Keilor had no answer.
Despite a solid challenge from Rupertswood, West Coburg will take their place in the Rookie Me Division One Grand Final after a 49-point victory on Saturday afternoon.
It was an arm wrestle in the first half with Rupo keeping the margin within a kick at the first break, and just 10 points at half time.
From there, West Coburg showed why they went through the regular season undefeated kicking 10 goals to four in the second half, holding Rupo goalless in the third term.
Although Rupo fought hard, the Burgers rampaged home to give themselves another opportunity against Deer Park and eye off their return to the top flight.
Noah Weihrauch was superb for West Coburg just over a week after celebrating his 20th birthday and was supported by the ever-reliable Dinny Cleary who booted three majors.
Ibby Taha continues to impress with another six goals to bring his season tally to 67.
Jackson Cardillo produced another stellar performance for Rupertswood who had a great season in their first EDFL finals series.
Oak Park has emphatically booked their return to Division One with a dominant Grand Final display capping off an incredible season.
The Oakers led at every change and stormed home with the flag well in sight to run away 20.15 (135) to 8.8 (56) victors.
The first half of the contest was more of an arm wrestle than the scoreboard might have suggested with the game played between the arcs for the majority of the first half.
Sunbury Kangaroos were able to score the first goal of the game with Jack Vivian slotting a set shot from just inside 50 three minutes into the contest.
It’d be another 10 minutes before the next goal was scored and it took some Zachary Graham magic to break through for Oak Park.
We’d enter time on in the first quarter as Oak Park started to muster repeat entries and score a pair of goals through breakaway efforts from Danny Rajab and Anthony De Lorenzi.
Sunbury Kangaroos would present themselves with two opportunities to score from centre clearances immediately after both goals but couldn’t capitalise.
As Oak Park started to find space in their forward half, they would bang home two late goals to hold a 25-point lead at the first change.
Sunbury Kangaroos had to respond first and they did after Rhys Magin was awarded a 50-metre penalty for an easy shot on goal bringing the margin back down to 20.
Despite their response, neither team was able to gain the ascendancy with the game continuing to be played between the arcs.
Oak Park were unable to capitalise on a few looks at goal before Dylan Cunningham pounced on an opportunity to send the ball goal bound and finished a delightful dribbler to bring the Sunbury Kangaroos back to within 17 points.
Clayton McCartney kicked one of the goals of the day to halt Sunbury Kangaroos’ run and extend the margin back out to four goals as we entered time on.
McCartney stayed in the game with a bit of brilliance to
set up Travis Anderson in front of goal for back to back majors.
A goal either way rounded out the quarter which saw Oak Park take a 32-point lead into the main break.
Sunbury Kangaroos have made a habit of fighting back all season, but it wasn’t to be with Oak Park powering away to kick six unanswered in the third term and finish with 12 goals to four in the second half to earn the premiership and promotion.
Jedd Taylor was adjudged best on ground by the umpires and awarded the Ian Price Medal kicking two goals and impacting the game all over the ground with his utility capabilities.
Ryan Smith was immense through the midfield breaking lines with his foot speed and enjoyed the first use Hirsi Twomey provided in the ruck.
The Oakers boasted 11 goal scorers with seven kicking multiples led by Lachlan Ronaldson and Graham with three each.
For Sunbury Kangaroos, Team of the Year forward pockets Brody Watts and Rhys Magin kicked two goals each, while Mitch Kook never stopped providing run out of their defensive half.
After beginning the year 0-5, going down by single figures in five games, and trailing early in their first two finals, Shanon Carroll and the Sunbury Kangaroos can hold their heads high on what was an incredible season to make the Grand Final.
Oak Park has gone one better than 2022, won both the Senior Men’s and Women’s flags, and after dropping just two games this year will be back in Division One!

It’s a Rookie Me Division One Grand Final months in the making.
West Coburg and Deer Park have been the two best teams this season and will face each other in the Grand Final for a spot in the top flight next season.
Ever since these two clubs played a thriller in Round 3 and another one in Round 8 when West Coburg won after the siren, there has been anticipation of an enticing Grand Final match up.
Throughout the season, the Burgers were the standout team building on last year’s grand final appearance.
They went through the regular season undefeated as only one team got close to them, Deer Park.
The Burgers had the best record offensively, averaging 125 points per game, while defensively they also ranked number one, conceding just 52 points per game.
The Lions entered the EDFL and Rookie Me Division One competition with high expectations and they justified them.
The Lions lost four games during the regular season, but all four were decided by less than a goal and came against the other sides in the top three.
They have hit another level once the finals arrived, sending statements to the other sides as players returned and the side really started to gel.
They were impressive against Rupertswood and even better against West Coburg, inflicting its first loss of the season.
The Burgers kicked just one goal in the first half such was the Lions dominance.
A proud team that West Coburg is, it was able to bounce back against Rupertswood in the Preliminary Final to earn another shot at Deer Park.
Now the question begs, will we see the same sort of game that we have seen during the regular season in the grand final, a hotly contested one that goes down to the wire?
Or will Deer Park continue its strong form and get its first EDFL premiership and eighth premiership in the last nine completed seasons?
Or might West Coburg throw a spanner in the works and show why it has been the best side all year?
Both teams come in with plenty of experience and players and coaches having been on the biggest stage.
West Coburg had all three sides in Grand Finals last year. While they lost all three, the old saying is you have to lose one to win one. They will only be better for the experience and added more experience into their team this season including Ruairi and Dinny Cleary, Tom Baravi, Ibby Taha, and Omar Saad.
The Lions produced one of the more dominant displays in local football with seven straight top level premierships in the WRFL, a feat achieved by no other team.
Scott Greenhough, Spiros Amarantidis, Tim Quick, Jake McKenzie, William Krithararis, and Kane Testa were all part of that last premiership team in 2019, and most played in more than one premiership.
Coach Heath Scotland has a premiership under his belt, having coached his junior club Darley to a Ballarat Football League premiership.
Who lines up for the Lions is one of the biggest questions heading into the game. The Lions can’t fit all their stars in with player points and have big decisions to make.
Luke Goater, who kicked seven goals in a best on ground performance in the Lions qualifying final win, is available with Footscray’s VFL season over.
In that first match Levi Greenwood didn’t play, but was best on ground in the semi final win.
VFL-listed players Michael Edwards and Jackson Barling both played Reserves in the Semi Finals and surely come into contention for the big dance.
Jake McKenzie is another to come into contention, while Altona premiership player Kevin Johnson is another who has been playing in the Reserves.
Come game time, the key is the start for both teams.
In the first game, Deer Park was wasteful early and made to pay for it and West Coburg could have put the game away in Round 8 early had they kicked straight.
In the final, it was all Deer Park and West Coburg never recovered.
The Burgers need league leading goal kicker Omar Saad to have a big game and get into the match early. He kicked three the first time they played and one each in the next two.
It’s been Ibby Taha, who sits second in the goal kicking behind his teammate, that has been the main one that causes the Lions trouble, but he was kept to just one goal in the Semi Final.
The key for the Burgers is to win the ball in the middle of the ground and then put the pressure back on the Lions.
The Lions have a lot of class in the middle and have shown when they can get good inside 50s, they have a number of different options up forward.
Stop the likes of Nash Holmes and Greenwood, it will go a long way to winning.
Deer Park will go into the game as favourites after their Semi Final win, but you can’t discount a side like West Coburg.
This match should be a cracker.

Can the reigning premiers continue their strong late season form, or will Pascoe Vale bounce back from a disappointing showing to seal the second Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division Grand Final spot.
The two sides enter the prelim in contrasting fashions, the Mores were impressive against East Keilor, while Pascoe Vale was no match for Keilor.
The Mores did all the damage in the first half, leading by 26 points at quarter time and then 42 points at half time.
With the game already over, the Mores continued with their strong form in the second half. Will Jury, Cooper Keogh, Brock Egglestone, Liam Cavanagh, and Daniel Mighell all returned to the side, with Jury named best on ground.
The Panthers were on the end of another strong performance from a red-hot Keilor.
While they tried hard early, the Blues defence was strong throughout holding the Panthers to just six goals.
Most of the Panthers stars were out there, with Liam Forbes and Daniel Guccione named their best.
That’s twice now the Blues have been able to get a hold of the Panthers this season, showing a gap between the two sides.
If form this season is anything to go by, the Preliminary Final should be a close one.
The two matches between the sides have been close, with the Panthers winning the first one by eight points and the Mores winning the second by three points.
Not much separated the two teams throughout the regular season.
The Mores scored 14 more points total during the regular season, while conceding six points less than the Panthers.
Outside of Keilor, the Mores have been the most inform team in the competition in the back half of the season.
Since Round 11 they’ve had just one loss, to Keilor, while they had a draw with Aberfeldie in Round 17.
Mores coach Marty Allison told EDFL Media that they’ve been coming together at the right time of year, with players returning from injuries and holidays.
He said the Semi Final win was their best performance of the season.
The Panthers suffered three losses in that same period, including a three-point loss to the Mores.
The Panthers have been sitting in second place for much of the season and deserve that spot, but came back to the chasing pack a little bit in the back half.
Throwing into the mix, the two teams were in the exact same position as 12 months earlier.
On that occasion, the Mores finally broke through after two close Preliminary Final losses in recent years.
The Panthers are a team that has been thereabouts without breaking through, with lots of talk about potential without going on with it.
They’ll be hoping that it’s their chance this year.
It’ll be interesting how both sides handle playing at Highgate Reserve in Craigieburn, where neither team has played very often.
Expect a red-hot start from both sides to set up a cracker of a match.
