CEO's Perspective
Community Bank Division
Two commenced as well with clubs starting or ending their path to the premiership over the weekend.
Well done to Oak Park for booking their spot in the Strathmore Community Bank Division Two Grand Final and good luck to Taylors Lakes and Sunbury Kangaroos who will be looking to join them in the big dance.
Keilor, Pascoe Vale, Strathmore, and East Keilor will enjoy the pre-finals bye and prepare to launch into a captivating finals series. For those clubs who missed out, they look to prepare for 2024.
The first 2024 Men’s Grand Final was played Friday night and saw Keilor awarded their third Shearasun Brewing Company Thirds premiership. Well done to Aberfeldie for making the Grand Final as well.
The first round of Men’s finals for Rookie Me Division One and Strathmore
West Coburg and Deer Park will play off in what’s set to be a thrilling contest for the first spot in the Rookie Me Division One Grand Final, with Rupertswood and Hillside looking to keep their season alive.
The final Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division home and away game was played over the weekend with the final top four remaining consistent for most of 2023.
We remind the EDFL community that they set the standard for the behaviour both on and off the field. Last week we saw the bar set with the support passionate yet respectful. We urge supporters, members, and club officials that they keep this in mind when heading to venues to barrack for their teams.
Good luck to all teams, members, volunteers, umpires, and officials this weekend.

KEILOR REMAIN UNDEFEATED
Shades of 2019 are peeking through with Keilor finishing the home and away season undefeated following a strong win against Essendon Doutta Stars.
One of the key differences between the seasons has been their utter dominance, lifting their average score by four goals and reducing their average conceded score by just under 10 points.
During 2019, they had four single-digit wins (including the Grand Final) while this year they’ve had just one.
Mick McGuane’s outfit have dealt with all challengers rather comprehensively at various
stages and are well poised to continue on to Windy Hill.
EAST KEILOR SECURES FINALS BERTH
The Cougars are playing finals footy following their win against Aberfeldie on the weekend in their second year back in the top flight.
Attaining the victory would have been enough for them to feature in September with Greenvale staying in the hunt, but they were able to run away 31-point victors with a five-goal final term.
Chris Stewart continued his impressive form in front of goals over the last month kicking four majors, while Ben Silvagni booted three goals in his second feature for the Cougars, donning the famous Silvagni long sleeve and number one.
While they hadn’t been super convincing in the second half of the year, they managed to stay well within touch and are poised for a do-or-die clash with Strathmore following the pre-finals bye.
East Keilor will be hoping to utilise the extra week for the return of a number of players after testing their depth with some Reserves forfeits.
The Mores will be a tough task as they’ve started to get their best side on the park when East Keilor have struggled to do so, with both teams picking up a win against each other throughout the season.
ROOKIE ME DIVISION ONE HILLSIDE WIN FIRST SENIOR FINAL IN A DECADE
The Sharks have tasted their first bit of finals success since their 2013 flag which saw them promoted to Division One following their win against St Albans.
It was an even start to the contest at Coburg City Oval before St Albans carried the momentum at the main break.
Hillside did well to keep the margin at just two goals with coach Charlie Denaro saying on the NXP Post Game Show that he was happy the siren went when it did.
EDFL Men's Headlines
His side started hot out of the break and although they missed some good opportunities early in the third quarter, they held the Saints goalless and kicked four of their own to take a 13-point lead into the final change.
St Albans were walking wounded with a reduced bench and Hillside seized the opportunity to run the game out.
Josh Covelli returned with a bag of six while Rusi Komaitai had an impressive day in the ruck, kicking two goals of his own.
Bol Kolang kicked five majors up the other end as their primary target, but was hurt by the lack of service from the Saints’ midfield injuries. It’ll be Shark Week as they face Rupertswood in an eliminator on Sunday at Joe Brown Oval.
DEER PARK MAKES STATEMENT
Deer Park showed the quality so many expected coming into 2023 with a 64-point win over Rupertswood on Saturday afternoon.
They controlled the game from start to finish and have set up what looks to be another salivating contest with West Coburg.
The Lions were looking for someone else to step up in the forward half with Todd Elton and Lachie Smart shouldering most of the load in their two losses to Rupo during the regular season, and Luke Goater did just that with a bag of seven goals.
Smart kicked four majors as well with multiples to Nicolas Aleksovski and skipper Spiros Amarantidis.
The undefeated Burgers await who have succeeded in two nail-biting clashes with the Lions.
STRATHMORE COMMUNITY BANK DIVISION TWO
OAK PARK INTO THE BIG DANCE
Oak Park are into a second consecutive Grand Final after their 41-point victory over Taylors Lakes
on Saturday afternoon.
The Kangaroos capitalised on their opportunities when Taylors Lakes didn’t (0.7) in the first quarter and were able to control their five-goal lead at the first change for the remainder of the game.
Blair Cronin kicked four goals in tandem with Lachlan Ronaldson’s three in a forward line that produced 33 shots on goal.
They’ve proven themselves as the top side in this competition and have thoroughly earnt their spot in the big dance.
Taylors Lakes will be ruing their missed chances, but will have another opportunity in the prelim this week.
SUNBURY KANGAROOS HOP INTO SECOND WEEK OF FINALS
After a slow start to the season, the Sunbury Kangaroos will meet Taylors Lakes in a Preliminary Final after defeating Northern Saints.
Their season has been full of fightbacks and Sunday afternoon was no different after trailing by five goals at the first change with just one behind to their name, they slowly clawed their way back.
After trailing by 15 points at half time, they kicked five goals to two in the third quarter and pushed on to a 14-point victory at the final siren.
Matthew Leonard played a strong hand up forward with six goals and was complemented by Mitch Streiff who kicked three goals in a beston-ground performance.
League leading goal kicker Khoder Taleb kicked five goals for Northern Saints but was only joined by single goal kickers.
The Kangaroos will now prepare for Taylors Lakes in their prelim on Saturday afternoon.
ROOKIE ME DIVISION ONE
We’re entering the halfway mark of the Rookie Me Division One finals series with a Grand Final berth up for grabs, and season on the line.
West Coburg and Deer Park will meet for the third time this season after delivering two mustwatch games of footy decided within a kick, one of which came after the siren with the Burgers picking up the two victories so far.
Many thought Jesse Martini’s heroics could be the Grand Final preview and this could be another opportunity to see these sides in action before the big dance, the winner booking the first spot and the loser entering a prelim.
Dale May’s men will be refreshed after a week off and have been the benchmark in 2023 going
through the season undefeated.
The Lions are coming off a strong win against Rupertswood with coach Heath Scotland describing it as one of their most complete performances so far this season.
The Burgers have been the most prolific at both ends of the ground and have found a way to take the win both times against Deer Park with accurate kicking in the first contest, and persistence in the dying stages the second time around.
Their second win was made more impressive by the fact that league leading goal kicker Omar Saad was well held and they were able to find other avenues to goal.
Ibby Taha matched his efforts from the first contest with another four goals, but it must be said that West Coburg’s inaccuracy prevented them from getting an early lead, a reversal from the first meeting where Deer Park were unable to capitalise in front of goals.
The midfield battle will be the most intriguing with both engine rooms stacked with stars.
Dinny Cleary, Tom Baravi, Tom Drake, and Jonah Horo saw the most minutes in midfield and will go up against Nash Holmes, Tom Mundy, Jack Dorgan, and Michael Edwards.
The depth and balance of both midfields will counteract the advantage Scott Greenhough enjoyed in the ruck against an undersized Damon Galofaro, but Greenhough’s mobility and presence around the ground is one May will keep an eye on.
Todd Elton was well held by the disciplined defence of West Coburg but looked likely in the ruck when Scotland tried to get him more involved.
It’ll be interesting to see who matches up with Greenhough at the first bounce as that is the only area Deer Park had a clear advantage in their last contest.
EDFL Men's Outlook
There will be stars everywhere and this one is poised to be yet another classic between these two sides looking to earn their way into the top flight.
Shark Week returns with Rupertswood and Hillside doing battle in a do-or-die clash in their bid to keep their finals runs alive.
The season series has been split down the middle with Hillside taking out the win in Round 1, and Rupertswood squaring up in Round 13. Hillside were in control for large portions of their second contest but weren’t able to contain scoring streaks from Rupertswood which let them back in the game, and ultimately cost them the victory.
Arron Bray threw Zak Saad into the midfield to thwart Hillside’s control on that part of the ground and was a key difference in the second half where Rupo kicked the final six goals of the game.
He also enjoyed the luxury of the venerable Dean Galea roaming the forward 50 as he booted five majors after not appearing in the Round 1 clash.
Charlie Denaro enjoyed a similar luxury with Josh Covelli kicking five goals in the first game, and three goals inside the first 10 minutes before injuring his hamstring.
He returned to the senior side in the first final and kicked six despite battling a knee injury, so it’ll be interesting to see if he can have the impact we’ve come to expect from the big spearhead.
Rupertswood picked up a couple of injuries in their loss to Deer Park which will make team selection interesting, while it’s unknown if Anthony Prestia will get up for selection with a hamstring injury of his own.
Rupo have been dubbed the “giant killers” so you can expect them to bounce back strongly, while Hillside will be full of confidence after a good performance against St Albans.
STRATHMORE COMMUNITY BANK DIVISION TWO
Taylors Lakes will utilise their double chance in this Preliminary Final against a hungry Sunbury Kangaroos outfit fresh off a fighting win against Northern Saints in their Elimination Final.
Shannon Carroll’s men fought back in that game after trailing by five goals at the first change, a common denominator after earning their spot in the finals series after beginning the year 0-5.
They’ve had a number of close losses this season, one of which a one-point loss to Taylors Lakes in Round 12.
The Kangaroos kicked four goals to one in the final quarter in a low-scoring affair and with a potent forward half, they’ve well and truly earned their spot in this prelim despite being the underdogs.
Rhys Magin and Brody Watts have combined for 89 goals this season with Matthew Leonard and John Corso also scoring more than 20 goals.
Taylors Lakes will go in as the favourites after establishing themselves as the next best behind Oak Park, a stunning turnaround with Steve Burns resurrecting a five-win 2022 season.
The Lions also took out the first meeting between these sides with a 23-point win and have started to field their best 22 in recent weeks with the return of Jake Toa providing a solid combination with Andrew Gallina in the ruck rotation.
Aaron Vendramini’s season is over after sustaining an ankle injury in their loss to Oak Park, while skipper Sonny Briz is a test for this weekend with a hamstring injury.
Despite the scoreline, Taylors Lakes were well in the contest last week with inaccurate kicking costing them early, but they were able to match Oak Park’s nine goals after the first change.
It’s do or die, a spot in the Grand Final against Oak Park is up for grabs. Will Taylors Lakes get another opportunity or will it be a complete Kangaroo battle?
