Season 2024 has been a very successful year for the league and the competitions it conducts on a number of fronts.
The highlights are as follows:
- There was a record number of teams entered in the various competitions conducted by the league (460 teams compared to the previous record in 2019 of 443 teams).
- A significant contributor to those numbers is the growth in the girl’s and women’s competitions.
- A huge increase in umpire registrations (743 umpire registrations compared to 583 in Season 2023).
- A strong financial performance.
- The consolidation of the league’s relationship with its major sponsor – the Strathmore Community Bank.
- The finalisation of lease arrangements with the Essendon Football Club for the Windy Hill administration offices.
- A strong performance by our management team under the leadership of Andrew Johnston.
Congratulations to our senior premiers
Keilor (Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division) Oak Park, (Airport Toyota Premier Division), Maribyrnong Park (Strathmore Community Bank Division One), Greenvale (Airport Toyota Division One), Taylors Lakes (Strathmore Community Bank Division Two), and Coburg Districts (Airport Toyota Division Two).
At the competition level, there has been a noticeable improvement in the general standard of football and also the level of competitiveness across the senior level of our competitions.
Our football competitions continue to rebuild after Covid and the league has, despite difficulties in finals fixturing, particularly for the seniors, had a successful year culminating in well attended final series in juniors and seniors.
Your board acknowledges the enormous effort each club and its volunteers and players have made to participate in this past season which is a credit to you.
In season 2025, it is expected that the senior men’s divisions will each have 10 teams with the transition arrangements complete following the admission of Deer Park FC and St Albans FC for season 2023. With the continued growth of our girl’s and women’s competitions in season 2024, one has every confidence that the depth and spread of talent will result in a greater level of participation across our clubs as well as further lift in the general standard of football.
This improvement in girls and women’s competition reflects the work of clubs but
also the constructive input by the Women’s Advisory Committee working with our board members Jan Chantry and Andrea Tacono.
Financially we have had a very strong year which has resulted from a combination of factors – conservative budgeting, very strong finals admittance figures, and continued growth in apparel sales.
In one sense, the unexpected size of the surplus is a bonus and the league will be able to provide some relief to the clubs with a rebate covering each clubs’ initial instalment of affiliation fees in season 2025. Thanks to the work of Greta May, the newly appointed Margaret Conroy, our Treasurer Andrea Tacono, our CEO Andrew Johnston, and the support provided by the other Finance Sub Committee members.
A special thanks to all our corporate partners and sponsors for their continued support and in particular to the number of new sponsors that came on board this year. As previously reported, our major sponsor Strathmore Community Bank has reaffirmed its longstanding commitment to the league by committing its support for the next three years – 2025, 2026, and 2027.
Our thanks go to, its Chairman Peter Brown, its board, and staff for its continued support and confidence it continues to show in our league and our ability to promote the bank and the services it offers to the broader community.
This year has seen a significant lift in the number of umpire registrations which is a reflection both of the work of Michael Willcox and our CEO and also the closer working relationship between our management and the EDFL Umpires Association and its President Ryan Hartwig. It is important for all involved in the League to support our umpires and to show and treat umpires with the utmost respect. A special thanks to our umpiring department led by Michael Willcox and Senior Coach Brett Pallini, who worked tirelessly to improve the above situations.
This season has seen a greater implementation of a management structure that delegates responsibility to operational managers which is a credit to our CEO Andrew and his management team. Also, there has been a significant improvement in the standard of management reporting to the board.
A special thank you to Andrew Johnston and our committed staff for your work.
It was pleasing to announce at the Annual Presentation Night that the nominations of Sandra Natoli (Craigieburn FC) and Russell Dowling (Northern Saints FC) for the Jimmy Ainsworth Award for more than 25 years of service to the club had been approved by the board.
The league has finalised the lease arrangements with the Essendon Football Club for the lease of the office premises with a lease period to 2028 and an option to extend to March 2031.
The league is working constructively with the EFC on the changing nature of the Windy Hill Development Project to ensure that the EDFL will remain a vital and viable part of that future and in exploring other opportunities to build a stronger working relationship.
This year the EDFL and the WFNL engaged in discussions and reached a strategic agreement aimed at fostering the growth and development of community football across both leagues. This collaboration is set to bring increased stability and opportunity to member clubs, with a focus on enhancing the experience and success of players, coaches, and supporters alike. This agreement to enhance interleague cooperation has the support of AFL Victoria.
A thank you for the continued commitment of my board colleagues Ian Price, Andrea Tacono, Steve Webb, Jan Chantry, Gareth Hanlon, and Nick Condos and to all Presidents, Secretaries, and club volunteers who have all played an important role for our league in its success in Season 2024.
Bernie Shinners Chair
Going into my second year as CEO, the continuing support and relationships developed in my first year held me in good stead for what 2024 was going to deliver. The continued support from all stakeholders was gratefully received once again. Season 2024 again showed the growing diversity and breadth of EDFL competitions, and the increasing demands placed on the league and the clubs that we are representing.
The success and growth of the league brings challenges which we have embraced, and the office continues to work closely with all our stakeholders to find ways to ensure we remain one of the strongest leagues in the state, if not the country.
The league maintains its numbers with slight growth in the number of teams, and a slight decrease in overall registrations in 2024 compared to 2023. This could be attributed to the ability of clubs to have less numbers in actual teams that play each weekend.
In 2024 we saw the introduction of two new clubs into the EDFL, Merrifield and Dallas junior football clubs. It was great to see Jacana Reserve having young footballers running around its ovals once again. The growth of the area in and around Merrifield will no doubt see the club go from strength to strength.
The continued hard work of clubs is acknowledged and fully appreciated by the EDFL staff.
It was rewarding to see the league, through its initiatives, continue to see an increase in the numbers and standards of Girls/Women’s football in the league. The formation of the Women’s Advisory Committee has been a great initiative as well. I thank Jan and her Committee for their work in 2024.
Every year players, officials, and spectators play a significant part in our game. The conduct of some individuals, on match day, continues to provide many challenges, however for a large majority I thank you for supporting the game we love.
A key activity for late 2023, early 2024 was to review the five-year Strategic Plan for the EDFL. The EDFL Strategic Plan 2020 – 2024 provided important direction for all parties and part of this review was to update it and then develop the next Strategic Plan for the EDFL.
The development of the next plan had input from our major stakeholders, mainly clubs, as well as other relevant stakeholders. Many people were asked to give up their time and thoughts by attending workshops,
completing surveys, and attending meetings. Your input was invaluable.
The five Local Government Areas where EDFL clubs are based, Brimbank, Hume, Melton, Moonee Valley, and Merri-bek City Councils, are critical to the ongoing success of the EDFL. We thank each LGA for their assistance in our club operations and infrastructure projects.
The league will continue to work with stakeholders to improve the infrastructure of our clubs. This year we have seen, and continue to see, several projects being undertaken with more to come or continue. The league is determined to see important works, such as new and upgraded change rooms, social facilities, lighting, amenities, and grounds, which are all vitally important to ensuring we continue to deliver the best possible community sporting opportunities. Supporting our existing clubs wherever we can, will always remain a high priority for the office and the board.
In 2024, in the juniors we saw 26 different clubs make a junior grand final, with 17 different clubs winning a premiership. In senior competitions it was 23 different clubs with 12 different clubs winning. The diversity of clubs whose teams play in grand finals is a true indication of the success of the league. The quality of people involved with our clubs, and the benefits of running divisional-based competitions across senior and junior football is imperative for the growth of the league.
The Strathmore Community Bank again made a massive contribution to our competition this year and it was with great pleasure that we were able to announce that the bank would continue this support of the league for the next three years. This amazing support of the Strathmore Community Bank will continue to benefit the wider community. We enjoy the support and friendship of Chair Peter Brown and all the directors and bank staff.
We must also acknowledge the continued support from Airport Toyota, Rookie Me, AGA, and iFLY as the naming rights sponsor of the various EDFL competitions and other awards.
Thanks to our suite of other sponsors, which includes Sherrin, Gameday Apparel, Grashan Sportswear, Sportsmoves, MCAP, Ascot Vale Sports & Trophies, Brad Teal, Club Warehouse, Club Connect, Streamer, Elastoplast, Essendon Football Club, Glenroy Bakery, SEDA, Liquex Logistics, Love Me Love You, Nena and Pasadena, Premier Data, SG Print and Paper, Sportscast, TAC, and The Valley. We are extremely appreciative of your support. We also look forward to continuing these relationships.
The EDFL office and its board have worked extremely hard again in 2024 and I thank them for their support and commitment to the clubs. Led by Chair Bernie Shinners, the board has been a great support to myself, and all staff, and I thank them for their continued advice and direction.
Over the first two years of being in this role, Bernie has been an enormous support and adviser to myself. He will be greatly missed by myself, but I’m sure he won’t be far away due to his love of the league and the game. A huge thank you to the EDFL staff, who once again managed our competitions professionally, efficiently, and with enthusiasm. This made my job a lot easier to manage.
Erin Heane, Patrick Moloney, Adem Saricaoglu, Eli Duxson, Michael Willcox, Emily Gardner, Margaret Conroy, and Greta May (currently on LSL), thank you all. I would also like to acknowledge Ken Waters and his contribution, not only to EDFL operations, but also the EDFL umpires over many years. He was sorely missed this year, and I offer him all the best.
I want to thank all the EDFL umpires and club umpires for their outstanding commitment to the league this year.
A special thanks needs to go to Michael for his work in this area. I cannot thank all umpires enough for your commitment to the EDFL and I look forward to seeing you all again next year.
Lastly, thank you to the other very important stakeholders who have assisted me and the EDFL this year including the EDFL Umpires Association, our tribunal and appeals board members, and the Essendon Football and Cricket Clubs.
Thank you again for a fantastic year and l look forward to 2025 and beyond.
Andrew Johnston Chief Executive Officer
This was another significant year for the EDFL on many fronts. It began with the state-wide rollout of PlayHQ as our new competition management platform, which did come with its fair share of challenges in its early phases.
Despite the anticipated teething issues, our organisation and our clubs adapted well to the new platform and the transition was ultimately a success.
By the time we got onto the field, the 2024 season provided for many highpoints.
Competition Growth
Women’s football enjoyed significant growth in the EDFL this year.
East Sunbury and Taylors Lakes both entered women’s teams for the first time, while Glenroy, Keilor Park and Roxburgh Park all re-joined our women’s competitions after fielding sides in prior seasons.
Additionally, we had Essendon Doutta Stars, Hillside and Oak Park all enter a second women’s team for the first time, joining the likes of Aberfeldie, Maribyrnong Park, Moonee Valley and Westmeadows, all of whom were able to retain their seconds teams from the year before.
This sharp uptick in team entries allowed the EDFL to not only stabilise Division Two with more fully-fledged ‘firsts’ teams, but it also paved the way for the establishment of our Women’s Reserves competition.
The Reserves competition was a huge milestone for the EDFL to achieve in its ongoing journey to build women’s football and the clubs are to be congratulated for their hard work in making it happen. Another welcome addition to the EDFL senior competition structure was the second division for our men’s Friday night Thirds competition.
With 16 teams entered, the EDFL took the decision to split the competition into two divisions of eight, which proved to be a tremendous success and ensured half of our Thirds teams got to taste some finals action in 2024.
As always, the Under 18.5 age group remains a significant challenge, but the league did enjoy some small gains in 2024. While team entries remained stable at 28 across our three men’s divisions, it should be noted that six clubs were able to field an Under 18.5 side this year after failing to do so in 2023.
Furthermore, last year there were 10 senior men’s clubs that did not field an Under 18.5 team, while this year there were only six. We hope these trends continue.
Our women’s competition also had its fair share of challenges this year, with many clubs fighting hard to keep their teams afloat.
But again, we had some small gains in 2024, with the number of clubs represented increasing from 10 to 12, allowing for a second division to be reintroduced.
We know that times remain tough for Under 18.5 participation, but the continued progress that clubs are making is tangible and they should be incredibly proud of their efforts in providing a direct pathway between their junior and senior programs. While it may not always seem so, we are on the right track with Under 18.5 football.
The senior finals series is always a huge undertaking with many moving parts and a lot of buy-in from an army of people at both club and league level.
We are incredibly grateful to all EDFL clubs who provided their facilities to host our finals matches and in 2025, we hope to see even more clubs put their hand up to host our events.
Glenroy Football Club is to be especially commended for agreeing to host our Women’s Division One and Two Grand Final Day at extremely short notice after Coburg City Oval became unavailable just four days out from the event. Sewell Reserve was packed as Coburg Districts and Greenvale both claimed their club’s inaugural senior women’s premiership.
A week later more than 1400 people saw Oak Park claim a second consecutive Women’s Premier Division flag with another tight win over Aberfeldie at Windy Hill.
Our overall crowd numbers remained solid throughout our finals series as the men took centre stage across five venues, including Windy Hill, Coburg City Oval, Greenvale, Keilor and Rupertswood.
A record Division Two crowd at Windy Hill saw Taylors Lakes earn promotion back up to Division One with a solid 19-point win over Westmeadows.
The following week, despite the miserable weather, Maribyrnong Park and West Coburg drew another large crowd to Coburg City Oval, with Maribyrnong Park cruising their way back to the top flight. Despite the heavy loss, West Coburg
should be commended on making their third consecutive Division One Grand Final. One of the EDFL’s most prominent storylines of the 2024 season was Keilor’s continued dominance over Men’s Premier Division with Mick McGuane at the helm. After notching up his 300th senior game at Keilor in Round 17, ‘Mighty Mick’ led Keilor to its first back-to-back premiership in 23 years.
The 2024 season was capped off in front of the largest crowd seen at Windy Hill in a decade as Keilor defeated Pascoe Vale, which should also be congratulated on making its first EDFL Premier Division Grand Final.
We must thank and congratulate Emily Gardner for her significant contribution to EDFL Operations this year.
Emily joined the league office in March to assist with both the Senior Operations and Umpiring Departments and quickly proved to be an important asset in our day-to-day operations.
We wish Emily all the best in her future endeavours.
The league was also well-served with having life member Arthur Crofts step into the role of Tribunal Chair in 2024. Together, we implemented some positive changes to our tribunal procedures this year and will again look to improve our operations in this space in 2025.
We’d like to thank Arthur and his fellow tribunal members, as well as our appeals panel members and investigations personnel, for their contributions this year. Finally, we must extend our gratitude to Allan Taylor, who again clocked up many hours assisting the EDFL with our finals series and the running of our tribunal sessions, as well as his ongoing work in the umpiring space.
We now look forward to another big year in 2025.
Adem Saricaoglu Senior Football Operations Manager
We welcomed two new clubs to our junior competition in 2024, the first being Dallas Football Club who formed out of a successful Auskick centre run out of Jacana Reserve in 2023. Dallas fielded an Under 8 and Under 10 side in its first year and narrowly missed out on finals in the Under 10s. Our second addition was Merrifield Football Club who again formed out of a successful Auskick centre which had been established in 2021. Merrifield fielded an Under 8, Under 10 and Under 14 side in its first year and, amazingly, made the preliminary final in the Under 10s which was a huge effort and I congratulate everyone involved.
The 2024 junior season started with a raft of changes on field that clubs and umpires needed to quickly adapt to, which provided a few challenges in the first few rounds of the year. Thankfully both groups quickly adapted to the changes and the rest of the season was expertly handled.
The rollout and adjustment to PlayHQ for all clubs and participants took some getting used to at first, especially when first registering. However, by the mid-way point of the year, most of the difficulties had been ironed out and improvements were being made to make 2025 a much smoother registration process. Enhancements in the fixturing and the regrading features are showing great early signs to making the process much more streamlined in 2025.
Junior registrations numbers in 2024 were 6765, slightly up on 2023 registrations which were 6744. Junior team submissions, meanwhile, rose from 310 in 2023 to 316 in 2024.
The 2024 AVMJDS Interleague Carnival was in full swing over the King’s Birthday weekend. We staged matches for both girls and boys programs against the WFNL, RDFNL, NFNL, SMJFL, F&DJFL, and YJFL. This group of boys and girls will be very successful in the future if their development trajectory continues trending in the right direction. We had a fantastic carnival this year, a clear standout was our Under 15 Division 1 boys team who went through undefeated under the guidance of Cole Harvey. We again participated in the Under 13 interleague carnival against RDFNL and WFNL, and it was a very successful carnival with our U13 Division 1 boys team going undefeated under the care of Paul Dorian. Our Under 13 Division 1 girls team also went undefeated in the newly created girl’s competition, which was fantastic to see and a credit to our girls and their coach Heath Mahoney. The support from Andrew Johnston and Russell Humphrey was pivotal for the success of our program, thank you.
Congratulations to all teams that won premierships. We had some outstanding games of junior football played and all were played in tremendous spirit. All hosting clubs were fantastic in managing the games and we thank them for their support, along with the various councils who support the league.
Congratulations also to five EDFL juniors who found new AFL homes in the recent AFL Draft. Well done to Isaac Kako (Northern Saints, Pascoe Vale), Harry O’Farrell (Maribyrnong Park), Lucca Grego (Keilor), Keighton Matofai-Forbes (Hillside, Burnside Heights, Keilor), and Jayden Nguyen (Avondale Heights, Aberfeldie). We look forward to seeing you perform on the biggest stage for many years to come! We also give our best wishes to all AFLW Draft hopefuls for late December.
Thank you to all our EDFL and club umpires for their support in helping us get games underway in 2024. I know at times this is a thankless task but please know that you are appreciated by all at the EDFL. As we all know, games simply do not go ahead without the umpires.
Thank you to all our club committees, club volunteers, and parents for the tireless hours you have put into junior football. We hope you have enjoyed the year, and we hope to see you back around the grounds in season 2025.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the EDFL board and fellow staff members for their unwavering support and tireless efforts throughout the year. Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Ken Waters, who retired from the EDFL during the 2024 season. His contribution to the league over more than 30 years has been enormous. Happy retirement Ken and all the best. I hope you enjoy a happy and safe off season and see you back at the footy in 2025!
Patrick Moloney Junior Football Operations Manager
It was set to be a big season on field in the EDFL with the competition looking even more fierce than 2023, so an exciting season in the digital space was what we were preparing for.
We knew we had to match the on-field action off-field, so plenty of editorial and content ideas were formulated in the lead up with a better idea on how to maximise output with a season under my belt.
Social media was again a big focus with the increasing reliance on our channels as a primary source of information and content, resulting in some huge numbers across our platforms.
Instagram experienced a 22 per cent audience growth reaching 374 per cent more accounts than 2023 with content interactions up 100 per cent. While Facebook is focused more on sharing information than the storytelling element Instagram is primed for, we still experienced a 38 per cent increase in content interactions reaching 24 per cent more accounts than 2023.
The league’s TikTok account was started in July and has garnered 1400 followers and 247k viewers in just over four months. The success of Instagram and TikTok can largely be attributed to our focus on vertical content to show the people, personalities, and talent behind our great league. Highlight plays, funny moments, question and answer-style videos were among a range of videos outside our regular content schedule, netting over 1.8 million views across our channels.
A particular highlight of mine in the content space was around the legendary Mick McGuane coaching senior game 300 at Keilor. He was gracious enough to let me mic him up for a training session to give everyone an insight into how he operates with the video gaining over 180k views across our platforms!
Another big content driver was gaining access to Premier Data statistics for all three men’s competitions and highlighting top performers each week. Over 60 players were featured with some huge stat lines across the season.
As we approached the finals series, we wanted to kick things up a notch. Writers Luke D’Anello and Luke Mathews highlighted special stories at participating clubs each week, fostering community spirit, while providing a different insight for those external to clubs. Alyssa James had helped with content throughout the season and was vital in capturing matchday moments on grand final days, both for live dissemination and for consumption throughout the week. A huge thank you should go to James Dabkowski who came on board to produce a video preview of our men’s Premier Division grand final and did a fantastic job,
producing other highly engaged pieces of content to go with it.
Our finals content received over 2.2 million views on Instagram alone which was incredible to see.
I would like to thank Luke Mathews and Joseph Ibic for the tireless hours they put in each week to our weekly reviews and previews with every game covered week to week in season 2024.
A special thanks also goes out to Stu Williams and the team at Shunt Creative for providing monthly reports on our socials performance, setting KPIs to strive toward and keep us on the right track.
Filming & Broadcast
Creating engaging and informative content is not possible without the action we see on the weekend. We were again fortunate enough to capture each of the 14 senior men’s games every weekend thanks to the extraordinary work of Andrew McLeish and the team at Sportscast Australia. Streamer came on board this year as our live streaming provider which provided a barrier-free viewing platform for the EDFL community, as well as clipping a huge amount of live content during broadcasts that allowed rapid dissemination of highlight plays.
As the league continues to focus on the development and growth of our women’s competitions, seven women’s Match of the Day games as well as the three senior grand finals were fully funded by the EDFL. A point of difference to neighbouring leagues, raising the profile of the clubs and the league simultaneously.
Overall we streamed 52 games which included six junior grand finals! We came in just under 50k total views with over 6500 views for the men’s Premier Division finale between Pascoe Vale and Keilor!
Thank you to John Dosen and the North West FM team that got us to air every Saturday throughout the season, they are truly the heroes behind the scenes. I would like to thank Travis Poznachowski, Tara Murray, Nathan Falkner, Todd Morris, Cole Harvey, Tom Yore, Adem Saricaoglu, Liv Douglas, and Michael Willcox for all appearing on the broadcast throughout the year.
We also thank Nena and Pasadena once again for their support of the Match of the Day broadcast and providing one of local football’s most sought out player of the match prize packs.
Podcasts
EDFL Podcasts made the move to Spotify this year with enhanced features on offer to the league, and an easier listening experience available for the listener.
The ‘EDFL Tonight Podcast’ headed out to clubland to record episodes early in the season. The success of these episodes
inspired the ‘In Clubland’ podcast series which should hopefully gain momentum in 2025, but the time required meant these had to be paused.
A big thank you goes to our coaches and players who participated in the ‘NXP Post Game Show’ every week, providing great insight no matter the result.
A special thanks goes to Tara Murray for her incredible work on the podcast each week and commitment to finding brilliant stories in the community!
Photography
Behind the lens of a camera most Saturdays, Shaun Sharp was again our league photographer and highly valued member of the EDFL team. Shaun captured awesome moments with images that feature prominently across all EDFL media streams and assist in telling the story of our great league.
Shaun was again a pleasure to work with and engaged in an extraordinary amount of work with an extraordinary output, making my job a lot easier.
Shaun was a key figure behind the EDFL’s first media day at the start of the season, capturing portrait photography of senior men’s and women’s players that featured across a range of media this season, part of our push to show the faces of our league!
I would like to thank all the clubs and those within them for being so easy to work with this season and allowing me to do my job to the best of my ability.
Thank you to the EDFL staff and board for being so supportive and affording me opportunities to try new things and ensure the league receives the coverage it deserves. Let’s go 2025!
Eli Duxson Media Manager
Season 2024 was a very successful one for umpiring in the EDFL. Registrations significantly increased in a really positive sign for the future of the league. The EDFL would like to thank every field, boundary, and goal umpire who umpired in the league in 2024. Your commitment, dedication and desire to improve continues to contribute to the EDFL product. Every umpire plays a significant role in keeping football going and your contributions are valued by the EDFL team.
The challenge for the league is to continue to build on this in the coming seasons as this is vital to the ongoing success of the league. The behaviour of players, officials, and spectators plays a massive role in the overall umpiring experience and I encourage all people to continue to work to improve in this area.
Highlights
The 2024 season had a number of highlights from an umpiring sense including:
- 743 registered umpires in 2024 which was an increase of around 30 per cent.
- Becoming a Women & Girls chartered umpiring group and experiencing a significant increase in the number of female umpires registered in the league.
- Appointing umpires to almost every junior match this season.
- Having eight umpires selected to umpire at the V-Line Cup which is the pathway to making the VFL.
- Providing the umpires to many Auskick games including the AFL and AFLW Preliminary Finals.
- Introducing an Interleague umpiring panel which helped the development of some of our talented junior field umpires.
- Investing in match communication units which helped develop our umpiring group.
- Many of our umpires achieved games milestones, headlined by Rocky Tranquillo’s 1000th game.
- Current EDFL umpires and umpires that have come through the EDFL program having significant success as part of the AFL talent pathway highlighted by Jack Howard, Anthony Laughton, and Luke Monea being promoted to the AFL list, as well as Jenna Green being promoted to the AFLW list and Jordyn Pearson being awarded the AFLW Umpire Rising Star.
- Thomas Smith received the Ian Coates award as the best junior field umpire.
- Hayden McDonald was awarded the EDFL Rising Star Award as the most promising young umpire in the EDFL.
- Jack Gordon was awarded the Umpire of the Year at the EDFL presentation night.
Coaching & Development
I would like to extend the appreciation from the EDFL to all the coaches, mentors, and volunteers that assist with umpiring in the EDFL. Once again Brett Pallini headed up the coaching staff with Shane Mallia leading the boundary umpiring team. The league welcomed in Michael Blair and Steve Marrari as goal and junior coach this year. Both were valuable additions to the coaching staff and we thank them for their time and expertise this season. There are a lot of passionate people involved in umpiring and your support makes the world of difference, especially to our younger umpires. The work of these people continues to allow umpires to develop themselves both in their onfield performance, and also developing valuable lifelong skills.
The EDFL also established their first Women & Girls training centre at Ascot Vale. This was very successful with over 20 umpires attending each of the training sessions. We thank the Ascot Vale Football Club who were very passionate in supporting the program and we hope that we can extend this in the future.
We continue to have some great partnerships with clubs in the EDFL. We currently have training centres at Craigieburn, Coburg Districts, East Sunbury, and Dallas which have helped the league continue to develop umpires in the league. We appreciate the support from these clubs in allowing us to utilise their facilities in training up the umpires and it would be great if there were other clubs that would be interested in this sort of concept.
The EDFL is excited for the future of umpiring in the league. We look to build on the exciting growth and development that we saw in season 2024 with some exciting initiatives planned. As a league we encourage anyone that has thought or considered umpiring to give it a go in season 2025. We would love to see ex-players continue to be involved in the game by umpiring as it is a great way to stay involved and give back to our great game.
It was a fantastic season 2025 for umpiring in the EDFL and I would like to acknowledge the support of the EDFL staff and board members. There has been significant focus and support in recruiting umpires and also creating a more positive environment for umpires. The support of AFL Victoria has also been beneficial to umpire recruitment. I would like to particularly thank AFL Umpires Matthew
Tomkins and Jamie Broadbent for giving up their time to come to EDFL training on multiple occasions to pass on wisdom to our umpires.
I would also like to recognise the significant contribution that Ken Waters has made to umpiring in the EDFL. Ken’s passion and knowledge has helped shape the program and put it into a place which has allowed umpires to flourish. I wish Ken all the best for the future and look forward to seeing him around the grounds. Emily Gardner has played an important role in ensuring that the administration side of umpiring runs smoothly. Her work is often behind the scenes but is the reason that our umpires can get on the field and umpire every week.
We continue to work with the EDFLUA, led by President Ryan Hartwig, to ensure that EDFL umpires are provided a positive environment where they can succeed and develop.
A special thanks the Cities of Hume, Merri-bek, Moonee Valley, and Brimbank Councils, AFL, AFLVIC, and most importantly our EDFL Clubs. Without the assistance of all these bodies we would not be able to operate effectively.
I urge clubs, players, and spectators to continue to work with us to help get more people involved in umpiring. The environment and attitudes towards umpires are so important in trying to continue to grow umpiring numbers. In 2024, AFL Football was well and truly booming across the EDFL between community-delivered programs and AFL Victoria-delivered programs.
In July we saw a change in staffing at AFL Victoria, with Shannon Gore welcoming a new member to her family as she headed into maternity leave for the next 12 months, as well as Courtenay Dempsey finishing up – creating an opportunity for Ben Phelps and myself to take on the massive workload that the team left behind.
In 2024, we changed our approach of getting AFL football into schools. Instead of trying to get into each and every school in the region to deliver short and sharp programs, we moved into a new mindset of being super targeted in which schools we enter and delivering longer and better- quality programs.
Using our data along with key relationships that have been built between AFL Victoria and the schools in the EDFL region, we have been able to run hugely successful in school and after school programs.
After school Auskick is a new initiative looking to bring the game to the kids at a convenient time and location run by AFL Victoria coaches, allowing kids who may not otherwise get the opportunity to participate in our great game the potential to have a go after school! The feedback is that the community want more opportunities and ways to play and delivering programs at their schools is a great way to do this. We aim to build the base, introduce our sport to as many students as possible, with the aim to transition them to their local Auskick Centre or Junior Club. The success of these at school programs is highlighted by Cana Catholic Primary School in Hillside – 83 of 421 kids at the school registered in the five-week program. This was one of the biggest programs across the state for the term. This year also saw the Essendon Football Clubs AFL and AFLW teams continuing to give back to the community by making visits to 40 local schools for Q&A sessions and clinics, along with the ‘Metro Blitz’ Program at Highgate Recreation Reserve in Craigieburn.
Auskick
Auskick in the EDFL was strong in 2024 with a total of 2551 Auskick participants in our club-delivered programs and 366 Auskick participants in our staff- delivered programs for a total of 2917 kids participating in the EDFL region. Once again, our Auskick coordinators, coaches, and parent helpers put together a massive effort to bring the Auskick season to life! We thank everyone involved for everything you all do to provide these kids with a fun and engaging experience. Throughout 2024 we visited five schools to deliver an Auskick program and had a total of 139 participants register with 101 of them being new to the game. From here we then saw 27 of these participants go on to register to junior
footy, Auskick or Superkick allowing us to continue to build the participation numbers in the EDFL by directing these participants to a club.
Building on 2023, we continued our transition program at the end of the Auskick season for our age-eligible Auskickers to prepare them for Under 8s in 2025.This program saw 27 female and 372 male participants in their club colours, playing Under 8s rules against other clubs on a Friday night in the four- week program. Thank you to Essendon Doutta Stars and Tullamarine FC for hosting the Unders program – along with all the Auskick coordinators for all the administration and communications required to get everyone on the same page!
In 2024, we ramped up our Superkick program once again!
Superkick is aimed at six to 12-year- olds that may have outgrown Auskick but are not ready for junior football, or targeting new participants to the game without the barrier of contact. A Superkick session involves 15 minutes of skill acquisition/development games and then a 45-minute non-contact match focusing on the basics of AFL in a super fun and safe environment accommodating for all skill levels.
Throughout 2024 we saw 320 superkick participants in our AFL Victoria delivered Superkick programs, keep your eyes peeled for some exciting Superkick centres coming in 2025!
In the term two and three school holiday periods, AFL Victoria partnered up with the Essendon Football Club to run some exciting and successful ‘School Holiday Programs’.
A program that entailed six hours of footy, from 9am to 3pm our awesome AFL Victoria coaches take the participants through skill development, matchplay, fun games, and even SEDA Activate jumping castles!
Term two school holidays was our first opportunity to deliver this program, Windy Hill being the venue of choice where we saw 100 Auskick and 112 Superkick participants come out.
On the back of our learnings from the first lot of school holiday programs, we felt ready to deliver bigger and better holiday programs in the term three school holidays.
This time around, we were lucky enough to use the NEC Hangar across two days where we welcomed 131 Auskickers and 119 Superkickers from far and wide to participate in the program.
Ben, Shannon, Courtenay, and I would like to thank the EDFL, Auskick coordinators, parent helpers, coaches, and everyone in between for their support in 2024. We hope that you all have a great summer break and are ready to get into 2025!

Keilor have won back-to-back premierships for the first time since 2001, defeating Pascoe Vale by 53 points in a dominant display.
The victory seals an incredible fifth premiership for legendary coach Mick McGuane as well as a fourth premiership for veterans Kane Barbuto and Mason Thomas.
After taking a 21-point lead into half time, it was a six-goal third quarter blitz that set up the win for Keilor before finishing with four final quarter goals to help cruise to a comfortable victory.
Nathan Colenso claimed the prized Reg Rose Medal with the forward booting five goals, including three in the first quarter against the run of play to keep his side in it, and two in the third term to blow the game out of the water.
The superstar had some strong competition for the medal from Jovan Petric and Nick O’Kearney who both kicked four and three goals respectively, as well as Christ Kosmas who provided plenty of run all day and starred in the memorable victory.
Pascoe Vale fired the first shot when Ahmed Saad intercepted a Reuben William kick and hit up Matthew Watson before playing on and giving it off to Josh Iacobaccio for the first of the day.
Watson was involved again just moments later when the sharpshooter made the most of William’s wayward handball and drilled his first for the day.
Keilor were able to settle their nerves when Colenso roved the pack to put through his side’s first for the match.
Ben Allan restored Pacco’s two goal lead, but the joy was short lived as Colenso drilled his second on the run to reduce the margin to six points 25 minutes into the first term.
The superstar forward wasn’t finished there as on the stroke of quarter time, he went back
with the flight and took a strong mark before converting the set shot to make it three first quarter goals and tie up the scores.
Keilor took the lead for the first time just after the quarter time siren when O’Kearney snapped through their fourth for the day and made it two in 20 seconds to extend their advantage to 11 points.
Saad began to make his mark on the contest after a quiet first quarter when he snapped through his first for the day in front of the Reynolds Stand.
Pacco weren’t able to string together a run of goals and Petric was able to capitalise on the Blues’ repeat entries when he got boot to ball on the goal line for his first of the day.
With the momentum against them and the game starting to get away from the Panthers, Watson and Sunny Brazier squandered golden opportunities to get their side back into the contest after their set shots ended up out on the full.
Petric made them pay again when the Blues took the ball end to end and dribbled through the goal of the day from the boundary to extend their lead to 20 points.
The superstar made it three in a row when he snapped through their eighth for the day to give them a 28-point lead three minutes into the third quarter, but he wasn’t finished there as he nailed his set shot from 45 metres out hard up against the boundary just minutes later.
With Pascoe Vale’s heads starting to drop, Saad steadied the ship once again with a crucial goal to reduce the deficit to 29 points.
Colenso would soon put through his fourth to open up a 33-point lead to halt any hopes of a comeback.
The number 31 brought the almost 4,000-strong Windy Hill crowd to its feet just seconds later when he got a handball receive and drilled his fifth on the run.
With the flood gates starting to open, Cody Brand got the better of Lachie Stredwick in a one on one and put through his first of the day.
Jared Eckersley kept his side in it with a pivotal goal just before the three-quarter time siren, but it did little to stop Keilor’s momentum with Matthew Bartlett replying straight away with his first major.
The premiership was almost sealed when captain Kane Barbuto kicked the first of the final term, as the celebrations started to boil over when Billy Johnson got on the score sheet.
With the light fading, Kyle O’Connor was rewarded for his tireless effort all day with an incredible goal from 50 metres out on the boundary and was matched soon after when O’Kearney snapped through his third from hard up against the fence.
As the minutes were ticking away and the result all but sealed, the Keilor bench erupted when the siren sounded and marked the third premiership cup brought back to the soon-to- be-renovated rooms at Joe Brown Oval in the last four completed seasons.

Oak Park claimed back-to-back Airport Toyota Women’s Premier Division premierships winning a one-point thriller over Aberfeldie at Windy Hill.
It was a rematch of the 2023 grand final with Oak Park this time entering the match with winning form over Abers.
Conditions at a picturesque Windy Hill were perfect for footy and the stage was set for an evenly poised decider.
Play stayed between the arcs in the early stages with neither side able to find much space in a high-pressure contest.
It was Oak Park who drew first blood through repeat Emily Findlay efforts ending with a lovely left-foot snap six minutes into the contest.
Taylor Moss would equalise after a free kick a few minutes later making it a goal for her in both grand finals against Oak Park.
Star forward Alex Quigley stamped her authority on the game with a strong mark inside 50 to give the Kangaroos a six-point lead at the first change
Tamsyn Kirk provided headaches for Aberfeldie, looming dangerously inside 50 for the Kangaroos.
Kirk kicked two goals in the term and created contests, while almost adding a third to her tally.
Stephanie Normington-Dickens was crafty to slot a third goal for Oak Park to make it three goals to one in the quarter.
The Kangaroos took a three-goal lead into the main break leaving plenty of work for Abers to do.
Remarkably, the Kangaroos would not score for the rest of the game.
The two blues controlled the territory, were well set up defensively, and peppered the goal face.
With just a minute left in the third term, for all their dominance, they hadn’t affected the scoreboard in a major way with four behinds added.
Chloe Rafferty proved to be a difference maker in the game when thrust forward and after being awarded a free kick at the top of the goal square, she kicked a goal right before the three quarter time siren.
Eight points was the margin heading into the final quarter with the Kangaroos wanting to defend the crown, and Abers hoping to break through after consecutive grand final defeats.
Neither team was giving an inch to begin the term before Trilby Sheppard was caught holding the ball in front of goal, with Emily Heaney slotting it to bring the margin within a kick with less than 12 minutes to play.
The ball was camped inside Abers’ forward half but they couldn’t break through for a major, a behind to Lyra Veniegas with a minute and a half left the only score.
It was a tale of two halves as Oak Park hung on to go back to back, the first senior women’s side to win consecutive EDFL grand finals.
Aberfeldie’s Rafferty was awarded the best on ground medal with a strong second half helping turn the tide for her side after moving from defence to attack.
It was a strong team performance for Oak Park with skipper Maggie Styles named their best.
Mikayla Barnes, Shanel Camilleri, Kirk, Normington-Dickens, and Rhianna Nunn were also among the best with each Oak Park player winning key moments when they had to in order to earn another premiership medallion.
Veniegas was important for Aberfeldie on a wing, with Lily Bateman, Emily Smith, Danielle Angley, and Emma Tatti also named in their best.
Abers made some moves to get back into the game with Smith moving up to a wing and Erica Markesich around and behind the footy, but Oak Park were able to outlast their onslaught.

Maribyrnong Park have claimed their first premiership since 2010, defeating West Coburg by 59 points in a hard fought grand final to return to the top flight.
With the margin at 14 points at the final change, it was a dynamic final quarter blitz that sealed the premiership for Marby kicking nine goals to two.
James Kayrooz claimed the coveted David McWilliam for best on ground after a dynamic display that willed his side across the line. The forward kicked two crucial goals in the final term that blew the game wide open.
The sharpshooter had some tough competition from inspirational captain Matthew Gaul who was everywhere early and found plenty of the ball, as well as wingmen Josh Cole and Max Griffin who provided plenty of run all day.
Marby got off to the perfect start when Matt Gaul extracted the ball out of the pack and found Lucas Edmonds who gave it off to a free Max Griffin who drilled the first goal of the day off the wing.
Superstar Brodie Romensky made it two from two just minutes later when he snapped truly after he marked Kayrooz’s set shot that fell short.
West Coburg hit back straight away when Jesse Martini put through their first after a Muhammed Saad centre clearance landed in the sharpshooter’s lap.
With the rain getting heavier and the players starting fumble, Saad levelled up the scores when he goaled at the 16-minute mark of the first term.
After three straight behinds, Marby were able to extend their advantage on the stroke of quarter time when they forced a turnover on the wing and linked up to find Bronte Campbell in the pocket, who made no mistake from the snap.
Emilio Rinaudo snuck forward just after the quarter time break to kick his first for the day, with the Burgers receiving a let off just minutes later after Lachie Plowman failed to make the most of a 50-metre penalty.
With the game becoming a stalemate, Marby squandered several opportunities to extend their lead they before they broke the run of behinds when Kyle Harman kicked truly to open up a 12-point lead.
West Coburg’s defenders Liam Bowkett and Dane Lucas continued to hold firm and denied Marby the opportunity to run away with the game.
As the seconds were ticking away, Marby were in desperate need of capitalising on their dominance, as Craig Searle sent Marby inside 50 before Will Ryan was infringed upon just before the siren to give Marby a three-goal lead heading into the main break.
The tall forward couldn’t covert and Marby were left to rue plenty of missed opportunities at half time.
With the rain returning and supporters seeking shelter, neither side could solidify their grip on the cup.
Dinny Cleary was denied the first goal of the third term, with his long range bomb touched on the goal line.
A goalless 26 minutes added to the already rising tension, however it was Thomas Wyatt who broke the deadlock with a crucial goal.
Thirty minutes was all that was left to decide who would lift the cup in 2024 and the intensity went through the roof.
Lucas Edmonds just about sealed it when the midfielder was given a free kick and nailed the set shot to extend Marby’s advantage to 19-points eight minutes into the final term.
The entire Marby side was getting in on the action with an avalanche of goals in the finals term as 11 Lions hit the scoreboard in booking their return to Premier Division.

It was third time lucky for Greenvale as it finally claimed the Airport Toyota Women’s Division One premiership.
After winning the minor premiership the past two years before falling short in the grand final, the Jets were hoping history wouldn’t repeat itself this year.
Like the last two years, the Jets were the first team through to the grand final and had a week off before the game.
Their opponent in the grand final this time round, was minor premiers Burnside Heights, which was also aiming for its first ever women’s premiership.
It was a high scoring women’s grand final with both teams having some really good patches of play in a tough contested game.
The Bears led by a goal at quarter time before the Jets kicked the first four goals of the second quarter.
A goal after the siren to the Bears made the margin 13 points at half time.
It was goal for goal in the third quarter.
Both teams missed shots early in the last quarter before the Bears kicked a goal after a 50 metre penalty nearly 11 minutes into the quarter to reduce the margin to a goal.
The Bears tried everything to get a goal to leave the scores, but with no success.
A point with a minute to go for the Jets was enough to seal an 8.4 (52) - 7.3 (45) win and the premiership.
Jets coach Troy Newton said he couldn’t be prouder of the group.
“We had to work for it,” he told Star Weekly. “It was a tough game, a hard game and the players just never stopped.
“One of our mantras during the week was playing every contest and every second and that is what it took, couldn’t be prouder and happier for the players the way they played and they played out the full game.”
The game was set up in the second quarter when the Jets kicked four goals to one.
Newton said it was the type of football they want to be playing on a consistent basis.
“An awesome quarter and I think I said to the side that it’s probably the best quarter we’ve played all year,” he said.
“That’s the sort of brand of football that you know, we want to play and we know we can play at times.
“It’s very hard to play it against such a good side in Burnside but it was the difference and it was awesome to watch.”
Newton said there were a few nerves in the last quarter as the Bears came hard, but he had the confidence in his group to get it done.
“We trained a lot, we trained for this situation,” he said. “I had confidence we could do what we needed to.
“It probably got a bit close for my liking, but again the players are just so good and they deserve all the credit.”
Talia Motta and Alisa Magri kicked three goals each for the Jets. Magri took several big hits in the game, but continued to fight on until the end.
“Sometimes she just gets judged on goals, but she has a lot more than that for our side,” Newton said.
Kiara Delia had a strong game in the middle of the ground and set up a lot of the Jets forays forward and was one of the standouts on the ground.
“She’s an awesome player,” Newton said. “She comes back down to Greenvale when she needs to and she’s just awesome around the group and she puts in like that every game.
Teaghan Brand had a number of good marks late in the game, Sophie Pettman provided plenty of run forward, while Grace Matser had a good battle with Holly McGregor in the ruck.

Taylors Lakes have outlasted Westmeadows in a gripping grand final, defeating the Tigers by 19 points at Windy Hill to head back to Division One.
In an enthralling contest that saw plenty of highlights, momentum swings, brutal toughness, and spectacular individual performances, it was Steve Burns’ men that edged out a brave Westmeadows side to claim this year’s premiership.
Chris Vulic claimed the coveted Ian Price Medal for best on ground with the midfielder racking up 34 disposals, 12 clearances, 10 tackles, and a goal to boot.
Shaun O’Grady got the Tigers off to the perfect start in a fiery opening term when he put through the first goal of the day after Jake Hatton found the utility 30 metres out on a slight angle.
Nathan Sparks made it two from two when he was taken high, before Rachrache settled the ladder leaders’ nerves and registered their first major of the day.
Moments later, Ryan Stingel got in on the action with some brilliant thinking after he intercepted a Taylors Lakes kick in and nailed a set shot from 40 metres out on the boundary.
Taylors Lakes were able to work their way back into the contest with two quick goals through Ethan Caffari and Mitch Jones just as the first term came to a close.
Rachrache began to make his mark on the contest during a second term that reached arm wrestle territory.
The big man put through his second with some clever soccer skills that clean bowled everyone, as moments later the full forward roved the pack and ran into the open goal for his third for the day to ignite the Windy Hill crowd.
The EDFL stalwart wasn’t finished there when he marked out on the lead and converted the set shot to make it three goals in 90 seconds to blow the game wide open.
Westy were in desperate need of a response if they wanted to break their 40-year premiership drought, as Stingel snapped the run of five straight Lion goals when he gathered a loose ball right in front of goal and put through his second to get the margin back to 12 points.
Luckily for the Tigers, Flavel-Wood returned to the ground but still looked hampered by that hamstring injury that cut his first quarter short and stayed deep.
After half time, Shaun O’Grady broke the deadlock 17 minutes into the third term. The utility brought the Windy Hill crowd to its feet when he stood up in the tackle and got boot to ball and it sailed through for his second of the day.
With the momentum swinging back in Westmeadows’ favour, Flavel-Wood’s day took a turn when he received a free kick for a hold at the top of the square.
Unfortunately, he failed to make them pay when he hit the post and couldn’t reduce the margin to one point on the stroke of threequarter time.
Jake Hatton had the opportunity to give the Tigers the lead with seconds remaining in the
third quarter when he marked 30 metres out on a 45 degree angle, but he hung his set shot out to the right.
With 30 minutes left to decide who will reign supreme in Strathmore Community Bank Division Two in 2024 and a classic grand final unfolding, both teams squandered golden opportunities to solidify their grip on the cup early in the fourth quarter.
With the game needing a hero, Rachrache stood tall once again.
After hardly being sighted during the third term, the full forward made the most of his opportunities and calmly slotted through his fifth for the day to open up a 13-point buffer.
Minutes later, the Taylors Lakes fans erupted when Christian Petersen marked and goaled at the top of the goal square to almost put the result beyond doubt.

Coburg Districts reigned supreme in the battle of the lions winning the Airport Toyota Women’s Division Two premiership.
Districts and Sunbury Lions were the top two sides all season and were destined to meet on the big stage.
With both teams looking for maiden premiership success in the EDFL, there was bound to be plenty of emotion and determination expelled across the afternoon and a tough, contested game is what ensued.
Sunbury controlled territory for the majority of the opening term but couldn’t capitalise on the scoreboard.
Just one behind was added to Sunbury by quarter time with Coburg Districts scoreless.
Jacinta Brew broke the stalemate 13 minutes into the second quarter turning on the jets and running into the open goal for the first major of the afternoon.
Both sides threatened the scoreboard to end the first half but to no avail with Districts leading by a straight kick at the main break.
Districts missed some opportunities early in the second half before Sunbury’s Jessica LaFontaine reduced the two points with a goal midway through the third.
The stage was set with the margin just one point heading into the last.
Districts had fought through finals heartbreak in years gone by and Sunbury had battled through injury.
It was Districts who stood up in the final quarter and controlled destiny kicking the first goal five minutes in through Maria Carbone.
The next score would come from Helena Katsios after a 50 metre penalty which put her on the goal line and all but sealed the win.
Sunbury had some chances late but couldn’t convert in a major way.
Districts skipper Liv Woods was awarded the best on ground medal for a dominant display in the ruck capping off yet another outstanding season.
Amanda Thompson and Giuseppina Tarantello were among the best, as
well as Harmoni Chivell and Chiara Chiavaroli.
Sunbury skipper Emily Taylor fought valiantly through a broken finger sustained in last week’s preliminary final, while young gun Emma Quarrell was important for her side.
Matt Tremellen and the Sunbury Lions will go again next year as they look for more continuity with their side.
It was success first up for Gavan WrayMcCann who’ll be looking for more as Coburg Districts head into Airport Toyota Women’s Division One.
