The Old Chapel is situated in beautiful surroundings towards the end of the lovely Lowther Valley. The twin villages of Bampton and Bampton Grange lie within the Lake District National Park, 9 miles from Penrith to the North and 4 miles from Shap to the South; perfectly located and within only a 15 or 10 minute drive of Junctions 39 or 40 of the M6, and also the A66 trans Pennine route at Penrith.

Penrith is on the mainline rail line to Scotland and London.

The Bamptons, historically a farming community, are two small villages less than half a mile apart and regard themselves in the singular. The Old Chapel is neatly positioned on a grassy knoll between the two settlements and adjacent to the splendid Halfa Bridge and fronting Haweswater Beck. A truly wonderful setting and the gateway to High Street and the Haweswater high fells. Bampton is the friendliest of villages and boasts the historic St Patrick’s Church, a community hall, a Spring and Summer functioning pub and a rather splendid village shop and café. The Wesleyan Chapel was built in 1877, remaining as a place of worship and local Sunday School

until the early 1990’s when it was converted into an award-winning three bedroom dwelling by local Penrith architects John Bodger and Partners.

The present owners have been mindful of the location, the history and the special status of the Chapel within the local community, many of whom have spent their lives in the valley and attended Sunday School at the Chapel as children. With this in mind, improvements have been carefully made by local tradesmen and using only noble materials, such as slate for worksurfaces and natural oak for floors, doors and solid kitchen units. Outside space is significant and the sizeable walled kitchen garden, with its raised beds and 20’ greenhouse will seduce the most ardent anti-gardener.

From the present owners: ‘10 years ago, the Chapel was an impulse buy, we just had to have it. Not a moment’s regret; the location was beguiling, not in the least remote and yet gave total independence and detachment from other buildings not so far away. The folk of Bampton are outstanding, friendly indeed, and always up for the Christmas Panto. The Chapel itself is a novel building and a local landmark, brilliantly converted and very snug in winter. Views from every window are magical and we have much enjoyed creating the kitchen garden with its raised beds and 20’ greenhouse. The remaining part of the sizeable garden we have treated lightly, to make for easy maintenance but also to remain in harmony with the surrounding landscape.

We are relocating to be nearer to family in the South, but it will be a bittersweet moment when we finally leave.‘

It lies around ten miles in a southerly direction from Penrith town centre where all the major shopping, schools and leisure amenities are available.

There is access to the motorway network at Junction 40 of the M6 and the West Coast mainline offers rail travel to London in three hours.

ULLSWATER LEISURE TIME‌ There are picturesque bridleways, fell walks and riverside walks on the doorstep, perfect for biking too.

Explore the myriad fells of the Lake District right on the doorstep, including nearby Kidsty Pike and High Street with views over to Ullswater and Windermere.

Around 25 minutes away is Ullswater, The Lake District’s second largest lake, which sits amidst the splendour of some of the finest fells in the Lake District.

From Penrith take the A6 to Eamont Bridge, turn right at the mini roundabout and continue along this road towards Tirril. Take the left hand turn to Askham. From Askham continue along the road to Bampton. When you get into Bampton, pass the small shop and go over hump back bridge towards Haweswater and Mardale. Keep on this road towards and take the left hand turn for Bampton Grange and Shap. Continue along this road and go over the bridge where The Old Chapel is immediately on your left.
