Welcome to C-Art 2015 C-Art 2015 continues to be Cumbria’s largest visual arts project encompassing the hugely successful inaugural Cumbrian Artist of the Year award. Awarded ‘Tourism Event of the Year’ at the Cumbrian Tourism Awards 2014 C-Art open studio trail will see over 110 artists, designers and independent galleries opening their doors to the public from 12th – 27th September.

Co-ordinated by Eden Arts, C-Art celebrates the vast wealth of creative talent in Cumbria’s beautiful landscape giving visitors the opportunity to talk to the artists, watch demonstrations and see how work is made in some of the most remarkable towns and villages in the UK. This year sees the return of the feature ‘C-Art in Extraordinary Places’ opening the doors to some unusual and inspiring locations.

Alongside this there are special exhibitions featuring the work of C-Artists in our 2015 gallery ‘hubs’, where you will also be able to find information about planning your route and pick up your catalogue. There will be workshops, associated events and demonstrations throughout the event.

Extraordinary Places C-Art in Extraordinary Places returns in 2015 with a host of artists taking up residence in churches and cathedrals, stately homes, forests, castles and barns. See colour in music, swarms of porcelain insects and cross media collaborations in some of the most beautiful locations the county has to offer.

You can arrive by boat as well as by car or bus. Sally Bamber and her watercolour paintings of the flowers found on the Brantwood Estate will be based in the Severn Studio during C-Art.

Sitting on the shore of Windermere, Wray Castle will be home to Christine Hurford’s body of work based on visits to the Freshwater and Biological society, looking at the extensive archive of diagrams, photographs and drawings of algae, Christine will be showing a piece of work on algae using drawings with raised lines, plaster and graphite.

Merz Barn see page 54

The Merz barn building still stands much as Schwitters left it in 1948. Located in a remote woodland in the heart of the Langdale valley in Cumbria it serves as a symbolic connection and poignant memorial to the spirit and tenacity of the artist who worked there. Sarah Tew will be presenting large-scale installations and smaller edition prints.

Dawn Mill displays an exhibition of her ‘St Bees Man’ project in the imposing setting of the former colliery at Haig Pit, Whitehaven.

Florence Arts Centre Gallery see page 60

‘GROUND 2’ - a group exhibition featuring and celebrating natural pigments and paints including those made with our own haematite from Florence Mine. The artists will be running workshops during the C- Art event encouraging visitors to explore the possibility and versatility of using natural materials to make art.

Cumbrian Artist of the Year Awards This year saw the inaugural Cumbrian Artist of the Year exhibition selected by an expert panel of Maddi Nicholson from Art Gene, Tonia Lu from Spring Fling, Mark Devereux of Devereux Projects and chaired by Rory Stewart MP. The exhibition was held at the Rheged Centre through Spring 2015 and highlighted the very best of Cumbria’s creative talent. Visitors were offered the chance to vote for their ‘People’s Choice’ by placing a yellow dot by their favoured artist’s name.

Short-listed artists for the Cumbrian Artist of the Year awards were Alan Stones, Phil Morsman, Richard Hughes, Sarah Tew and Di Mcghee.

A special awards ceremony held in May also saw the presentation of the second Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year aimed at helping in the artists working practice and their professional development. Their work can be seen in the online gallery on the C-Art website.

Painter Alan Stones won the people’s vote with his imposing and esoteric works inspired by the human condition.

Bronny Salter won the award this year with her extremely technically accomplished animations which also made the panel smile. The panel was made up of the 5 short-listed Cumbrian Artist of the Year.

Friends of St Mary’s Church, Wreay, present an exhibition of the work of the sculptor Rowena Beaty set within the beautiful interior of St Mary’s Church. Rowena will talk about the creative act of sculpture and her reaction to and affinity with the work of Sarah Losh, creator of this unique church.

What colour is the sound of a violin?

What note is bright light?

What does a chord look like?

How do we hear a tree?

How long a sound is a shadow?

How do we paint a tune?

Where can we hear a drawing?

How does a woodland appear when it is expressed in sound, what do it’s sounds look like?

These questions and others will be explored by a visual artist, Alex Jakob-Whitworth working in ink and paint and pastels, and a professional violinist, Barbara Gilbertson, at Dufton Ghyll, near Appleby - responding to their surroundings and each other’s work...in a beautiful natural amphitheatre with stunning acoustics. The idea of synesthesia (hearing in colour, and/or seeing with sounds) is one that is gaining some understanding... and this one off event will celebrate and examine it, in real time.

Parking is available. There are public toilets, a pub and a cafe within walking distance.

Brougham PhotoFest3 11th Sept 2015 to 20th Sept 2015 Building on the success of the first two years this year’s festival has a photography and poetry theme and will be taking place from 11th-20th September 2015. Abandon Normal Devices Festival at Grizedale Forest 18th – 20th Sept 2015 This autumn Abandon Normal Devices makes a call to your wild side, inviting you to Grizedale Forest in the heart of the Lake District.

The Festival will create a site for exploration and uncover the secret architecture of the forest through a programme of artworks, events, trails and film happenings. Through collaboration with Forestry Commission England’s Forest Art Works programme, in September it will become a temporary haven for artists, designers, scientists and filmmakers, who will explore the woodlands, nature’s processes’ and some of cinema’s most extreme visions.

C-Art studios and venues are divided up into 5 different ‘trails’ showing the different districts in Cumbria. These are colour coded to help you plan your route. Studios and venues vary in their opening times so check before you plan your route.

Poetry performance at Brantwood, in the Severn Studio 20th Sept 2pm to 4pm This collaboration of artist Sally Bamber and poet Maggie Norton celebrates ignored and unheralded/ overlooked wild flowers. Each artist responds to the dance and voice of a living thing by expressing their feelings in complimentary words and pictures. Maggie will performed her poems in the Severn Studio among the watercolours of wild flowers

by Sally Bamber. Maggie is a poet, children’s novelist, editor and writing tutor.

Gill Dearman is a textile artist, maker and designer who works with textiles to create unique mixed-media images and art objects which are inspired by the world around her, exploring themes of growth, strength and energy. I make animal sculptures; creatures of forest and moor. Recently these have become x-ray like, revealed their internal anatomy. They reference prehistoric art but their materials such as wire and electronics point to the future. New work includes the Memory Vessel sculptures which combine Raku ceramics with natural forms, sometimes including images commemorating the First World War. I have exhibited nationally and in several international shows.

Ros’s interest in the coastal regions around the Solway Firth and West Coast of Scotland are the inspiration for her oil paintings and aquatints.

I make jewellery and decorative hangings from ancient glass fragments, semi-precious stones, silver and lampwork beads. I weave vintage and ancient stones and beads into my contemporary pieces. Many are loosely based on antique North African designs. I am inspired by contrasts from the beautiful Eden Valley to Essaouira, Mallerstang to Marrakech, beautiful stones old and new, shadow and colour, wild places and smiling faces.

Colour, shape and texture, that’s the beauty of working with wool, and that’s why I love it. Felt-making can feel a little like alchemy, the transmutation of wool, where the combination of different materials and techniques result in such a wide variety of outcomes. I enjoy both painting with wool to produce artwork, and coaxing 3D forms from this natural, renewable product. There will be things to buy as well as lots to see in my workshop this year at Lowther Castle.

I hand build all my stoneware ceramic creations using rugged “crank” clay. I create lots of detail and texture on the clay surfaces using natural found tools. Which then combine with the natural forms and shapes to create a varied and stimulating surface texture and interest to my ceramics. Andy Goldsworthy’s Sheepfolds - Cumbria

In 1996 the internationally acclaimed artist Andy Goldsworthy was commissioned by Cumbria County Council to celebrate the “perfect republic of shepherds” with a countywide sculpture project called ‘Sheepfolds’ as part of the UK Year of the Visual Arts. While a number of these can be seen across Cumbria you will find the majority in Eden.

At its conclusion, in 2003, Andy Goldsworthy and a team of dry stone wallers completed nearly 50 Sheepfolds, which as a collective whole, is probably the biggest sculpture in the world.

Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year 2015 Due to the huge success of the 2014 award, Eden Arts launched the second ‘Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year’ as part of the ‘C-Art’ project.

Cumbrian artists aged 15-24 were invited to enter the competition aimed at helping the development of their art practice and careers.

A panel of arts professionals, made up of the short-listed Cumbrian Artist of the Year artists, selected a short-list of 8 artists; Adam Storey, Anna Hutton, Beatrice Hasell-McCosh, Jessica Robinson, Keziah Baskerville-Muscutt, Natalie Towers and Rebecca Snow. The winner was animation artist Bronny Salter. Bronny won a £500 cash prize, some sketchbooks and Khora prints donated by sponsor James Cropper.

Seldom Seen Peoples Museum at The Ship Inn Piel Island, Barrow // Art Gene

This fascinating place is home to a permanent exhibition curated by Art Gene nestled in the unique setting of the Ship Inn on Piel Island. Home to just a handful of houses, a pub and a castle, Piel Island is in itself worth a visit.

The exhibition came about through a commission from Barrow Borough Council and was taken on during a process of mapping Piel Island and eight other small islands in Cumbria. Its production involved working with a taxidermist, a naturalist, a geologist, an architect, an upholster, book binder, a sign painter and five local bakers.

They produced artworks that now furnish the pub, including a massive round table for the King and Knights of Piel, pub tables engraved with drawings and text, a cabinet of curiosities, a set of maps printed on beer mats, and settle benches and stools.

The island can only be reached by ferry at certain times.

I currently concentrate on relief printmaking as the medium where I can best explore my interest in chromatic colour, in multiples. Particularly I find interesting the restrictions of the reduction method of making prints.

I moved on from making large lino prints using this method, to engraving small end-grain wood blocks and find enormous interest in the necessary forward planning of area and colour. Also I will be showing lithographs and etchings from earlier periods.
