Evaluation November 2016

C-Art is an Eden Arts project

With thanks to our sponsors and supporters

Simply showing at home (outside of a gallery setting), and getting up close and personal with people is very important when showing and selling art. It was like multiple exhibition previews, very exciting! Artist Feedback 2

C-Art entered it’s 6th year in 2016 and continues to be Cumbria’s single biggest visual arts event. C-Art seeks to create a platform to promote local artists as part of Cumbria’s tourism offer and elevate the work of Cumbrian artists. The open studios event, Artist of the Year exhibitions, workshops and associated events starting in September created the biggest offering yet for cultural visitors to the county. The 2016 event saw the return of the Young Curators scheme and the introduction of the bursary scheme for both emerging and installation artists to participate in the open studios. 3

A total of £16,220 was generated through participant fees. Artists wishing to take part in the open studios as an individual or gallery were required to become a CArt member. Sponsorship raised £1,500 (from the headline sponsor H & H Reeds) with additional in kind support from G1 Creative, James Cropper Ltd and the Cumberland and Westmorland Herald (to the value of £2,870). Donations and commission (of 5%) raised an additional £2,495 and £1500 was raised in catalogue sales. The commission was introduced this year to prevent increasing fees across the board resulting in artists successful in sales contributing a higher amount. Total income for the project was £22,440 with Eden Arts providing a further £9,928 in subsidy. For full budget see page 18 appendix 2

The open studios event saw the overall visitor numbers down but visitors per head rise by 14%. Overall sales were also down and there was a 17% drop in sales per head. (2015 sales/head was £1140, 2016 sale/head £968).

I think C-Art is a fantastic experience for the artists taking part and the audience that come to see it. There is no 'one way' to experience or make art and I think having C-art is a way for lesser known artists to express themselves and become known in their community. Artist Feedback

Publicity and Advertising

63% of participants felt the publicity was good or excellent. Press coverage was significantly increased in 2016 thanks to working alongside Cumbria Tourism. The advertising equivalent value for media coverage was ÂŁ73,795. There were 102 recorded incidences of media coverage in 2016, an increase of 60% from 2015 when there were 63. A large banner was placed in Penrith and 30 small and medium banners across the county. In addition to the above 2 x adverts were taken out in the Craft and Design Magazine, 1 advert in the Arts Fest North catalogue, 1 half page advert in Living North and 5 x adverts in the Cumberland and Westmorland Herald (in kind

Great to see more art and meet the artists - great inspiration and even though I was unable to visit many galleries this year the widely available catalogue gives a great idea of what's out there and the prominence of the advertising suggests a thriving art community in Cumbria. Visitor Feedback

Website, Email marketing and Social Media

Website views in 2016 were up 20% to 15,652 website visits and

93,144 page views. Activity of all social media platforms increased significantly with 259 posts using the #CArt2016 handle.

Artist Ben McLeod

It gave me the opportunity to invite fellow craftspeople to my workshop as visiting artists which I wouldn't have done otherwise. This has been the catalyst for me to make new connections and develop important networks within the local area. Artists Feedback

Participant Feedback

53% of participants responded to the call out for feedback on the event. With regard to the length of C-Art open studios, 71% of artists would prefer a shorter event running over 2 weekends (9 days). The feedback on the ordering of artists in the trail was indecisive, with 34% preferring a geographical numbering system, 22% preferring an alphabetical system and the remaining 44% with no preference. 82% would consider taking part in the open studios 2017.

I liked the venue at Ashness Bridge and that most of the visitors would not have gone to a C-Art event but were just passing by. More things like that would make it different from only open studios. Being part of the C-Art open studios has created much wider awareness of my work than what I could have done alone. This is the first time I have taken part in an open studio event, and it was invaluable for me as I have not been in the area long. C-Art has created many new positive contacts for me, both in fellow practitioners as well as potential customers. I joined with the aim of generating interest and awareness of my craft and my business, and C-Art 2016 has delivered way above my expectations. I also felt that C-Art provided excellent targeted marketing on a much bigger scale than I could achieve on my own, and at a cost which I see as being excellent value and a worthwhile investment. Participant Feedback

47% of C-Art members entered work into the Cumbrian Artist of the Year exhibition. Entry was free to C-Art members and ÂŁ25 to non-CArt members. The exhibition featured the work of 43 artists, 65% of the exhibiting artists were C-Art members with the remaining 16 artists featured in the exhibition having submitted work through an open call.

It was a good show, a real mix of disciplines. It would be good to have at least one piece of work by all of the C-Art studio artists, so that people get an idea of all the work available on the tour? The issues around "craft" applications and the timeliness with which these were communicated were disappointing. Very refreshing, thought-provoking, intelligent. I’m proud to be a part of it. Visitor Feedback

The feedback from 123 visitors was very positive with over 99% saying they would visit C-Art again and over 90% would recommend it to a friend. The majority of visitors responded that the motivation for their visit was to be inspired. 80% of visitors went to between 1-6 studios and 97.5% rated their experience as ‘good’ or ‘excellent’. 33% of visitors had not been to C-

Seeing a stimulating range of different artists who were passionate about their art and prepared to give advice and just generally discuss their Art Sprint Mill. I loved the interactive stuff (making things there), I took friends several times. I'd like to see some big art in Kendal/surrounds, not necessarily art to buy but art to make you think. The open hut above Ashness Bridge had clever, beautiful pieces in a lovely setting . I would have bought cards of the work if they'd been available.

Extraordinary Places

The third year of Extraordinary Places saw a number of new venues and the return of some previous ones. With the introduction of the ’bursary’ scheme artists exhibiting installations were invited to apply to the open studios without paying the open studios fee encouraging site specific work not for sale. The following venues took part in 2016: Eden: Lowther Castle (artists David Sims, Emma L Lock, Jo McGrath and Becky Eden, Ullswater Shores (artist Rachel Fenwick– installation), Dalemain Historic House & Gardens (The Cumbria Printmakers), Brougham Hall (Brougham Hall Artisans and Mary Chappelhow), NT Acorn Bank (Artist Alex Jakob-Whitworth), The Old Courthouse, Shap (Paperscissorbook) South Lakes/Copeland: Sprint Mill, St Mary’s Church at Kirkby Lonsdale (Paperscissorbook), Florence Arts Centre, NT Fell Foot (artist Sarah Tew) Carlisle: Carlisle Cathedral (artist Rowena Beaty), The Guildhall Carlisle (artist Rosie Galloway-Smith) Allerdale: NT Bark House at Ashness Bridge (artist Christine Hurford-installation)

Carlisle cathedral setting (art in extraordinary places) was beautiful and using this venue introduces art to many people who wouldn't normally see it. Artist Feedback

Cumbrian Artist of the Year

Now in it’s second year, there were 87 entries in total with 43 artists forming the body of the Cumbrian Artist of the Year exhibition and the additional Sculpture Trail (65% of the exhibiting artists were C-Art members). The Rheged Centre sought funding from the Arts Council Grants for the Arts scheme for the Sculpture trail (including newly commissioned artwork) and part of the Young Curators project (NB no funding came to C-Art or Eden Arts) Visitors numbers increased from 7424 in 2015 to a total of

22,500 in 2016 and

total sales reached £11,200 The exhibition was selected by a group of Young Curators (see next page) led by Eliza Bonham Carter from Royal Academy Schools and Nick Rogers from Lakeland Arts Trust. The winner of the Cumbrian Artist of the Year was Karen Babayan (pictured below) with shortlisted artists Jocelyn Mcgregor, Brian Shields, Hamish McLain, Celia Burbush and Monica Metsers. The winner of the People’s Choice award, voted for by visitors to the exhibition, was Jonathan Trotman. ‘I think it is one of the most inclusive and ambitious exhibitions of Cumbrian work that I’ve seen. From the traditional to the contemporary, it really showcases the breadth and diversity of artistic practice here in Cumbria.’ Participating Artist 2016

Young C-Art

Young C-Art, now in it’s 4th year, continued with the Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year and the Young Curators. Young Curators The Young Curators scheme returned after a pilot scheme in 2013. 6 young people aged between 16 - 24yrs (selected from 16 applicants) were invited to visit the Royal Academy Schools and RA Summer Exhibition in London (to learn about curation) and formed the panel selecting the work for the Cumbrian Artist of the Year Exhibition guided by Eliza Bonham Carter (RA Schools) and Nick Rogers (Lakeland Arts). The group were also involved in the installation of the exhibition. 2016 Young Curators: Marisa Crane, Kezia Baskerville-Muscutt, Adam Story, Sophie Ogden, Lizzie Plasom-Scott and Catherine Beaumont. They have since started reviewing exhibitions, productions and other cultural events via their blog https://youngcurators.wordpress.com/

The opportunity of going to London, and particularly going behind the scenes of the RA, was definitely a highlight. Most of all though, I loved the sense of team work involved in the hanging of the exhibition; we all became really close and I have made really good friends who are likeminded in their creativity and ambition. I feel we will remain in touch and continue to help each I learnt huge amounts during the whole process, I came with only very basic knowledge and completely had my eyes opened to the world of curating. Young C-Art

Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year 2016 The third year of the Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year featured the addition of a physical exhibition at the Vallum Gallery, the Institute of Arts, University of Cumbria. There were 75 entries in total with 50 selected for the online gallery and 30 artists invited to exhibit at the Vallum Gallery. The shortlist and winner featured in an online gallery on the C-Art website (with 1566 views) and also the exhibition from 1st Sept to 6th Oct which attracted over 800 visitors. The selection panel was made up of Sarah Tew (Cumbrian Artist of the Year 2015), Roddy Hunter (Director of the Institute of Arts, UoC) and Charles Quick (Professor at UCLan). Adam Story was selected as the winner of the £500 prize.

‘I found the process of entering the competition was a great experience as it was important to present yourself as a professional artist. I am sure the experience will help me in future exhibitions. It was a fantastic reward for all the hard work I have put in to my practice having studied at for my Foundation Course at Carlisle College this year. The prize money will be put to good use in creating new work ‘. Adam Story (winner of the Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year 2016)
