The pretérito imperfecto, or imperfect tense, is a past tense. To form the pretérito imperfecto of regular verbs, remove the -AR, -ER or -IR and add the following endings:

1. To describe things you used to do or repeated actions in the past. Nos acostábamos tarde los sábados. ...........We used to go to bed late on Saturdays. Nerea tocaba el piano. .....................................Nerea used to play the piano. Visitaba a mis abuelos a menudo..................I often visited my grandparents.
2. To describe actions that were in progress in the past (was/were + -ing in English). Mis padres cenaban cuando llegó Juan.......My parents were having dinner when Juan arrived. Veían la tele cuando sonó el teléfono. ..........They were watching television when the phone rang. Raúl daba un paseo cuando se cayó.............Raúl was going for a walk when he fell.
