Belfast diabetes prevalence hits nearly 23, 681

New figures released by the Department of Health highlight diabetes as the third most prevalent health condition in Northern Ireland.

Taking into account patients aged 17 and above, the data reinforces fears of a rapidly escalating diabetes crisis, a concern recently shared by leading diabetes charity, Diabetes UK. A breakdown of the data across all Trust areas is as follows; Belfast – 23,681, Northern – 29,212, Southeastern – 18,861, Southern, 21,567 and Eastern – 17,485.

Prevalence reporting has been in place for almost 20 years, with the 2022/2023 figures highlighting that diabetes diagnoses have more than doubled since then.

Whilst treatment costs for diabetes can be difficult to quantify, it is estimated to be approximately £1million per day – accounting for 10% of the local health and social care budget.

Knowing the signs and symptoms to look out for in

relation is vitally important, if you spot any of the following signs, contact your doctor immediately:

• Toilet – needing to use the toilet more often, especially at night.

• Thirsty – being constantly thirsty and not being able to quench it.

• Tired – being incredibly tired and having no energy.

• Thinner – losing weight without trying to or looking thinner than usual.

The city’s highest honour was bestowed on the young boy in recognition of his campaign to raise awareness around organ donation.

A circus top transformed the outside lawn at City Hall, alongside acrobatic characters, and children’s entertainment to welcome

invited guests.

The Lord Mayor of Belfast Councillor Tina Black was delighted to lead the celebratory event and said: “Dáithí is an exceptional and special little boy who has inspired and given hope to other young people waiting for a donor.”

Dáithí was born with

hypoplastic left heart syndrome, meaning the left side of his heart did not form correctly and he has been on the list for a heart transplant for several years.

Dáithí and his family have lobbied for a change in the legislation in Northern Ireland and Dáithí’s law successfully

came into effect on Thursday 1 June. This means all adults will be considered potential organ donors unless they choose to opt out or are in an excluded group.

celebrates our undeniable talent in these artforms. Belfast City Council is so proud to support this festival programme. Belfast TradFest not only makes traditional music and dance accessible to new audiences, it nurtures and inspires new and upcoming talent, attracts international visitors and it animates our spaces in a really joyous, authentic way. It’s the true embodiment of our status as a UNESCO City of Music. I wish everyone involved the very best of luck.”

Dónal O’Connor, Belfast TradFest Artistic Director, commented: “Our fifth edition is a hugely significant occasion for Belfast TradFest, especially considering the pandemic years and the challenges posed by recent cuts to arts funding. We will, of course, be paying homage to the musicians, bands and artists who have contributed, supported and inspired the festival over the years, but importantly this is also a moment to look to the future. Belfast TradFest is showcasing some of the best

music these islands have to offer. Established and emerging musicians come here to create and perform and audiences are attracted to enjoy the cultural exponents of our city at first hand. Sharing our music and our arts is a vital part of our human existence, connecting us and enriching lives, and we cherish that. We are so excited to bring this full programme of events to the people of Belfast and to invite many new visitors to our city from all over the world.”

The Belfast TradFest Summer School of Traditional Music is the hub around which the festival is built. Musicians of all ages come to Belfast to learn from the very best in the business in a five-day intensive programme of summer school events. This year’s line-up of tutors features no less than eight TG4 Gradam Ceoil Award recipients. Amongst the list of world-class talent will be Tyrone’s Ryan Molloy, acclaimed composer and

musician Neil Martin, Co. Kerry’s Niamh Ní Charra, banjo maestro Angelina Carberry, Sean Nós dancing dynamo Edwina Guckian and Belfast’s very own set dancing master Ronán Eastwood. ‘parkrun for the NHS’ launches

Special parkruns to mark the 75th anniversary of the NHS will take place across Northern Ireland in July.

Oscar winner and parkrun volunteer, James Martin and Department of Health Permanent Secretary Peter May joined hundreds of runners at Stormont recently to officially launch the ‘parkrun for the NHS’.

The NHS 75th anniversary parkruns will be held across Northern Ireland on Saturday 8 July. Junior parkruns are also taking place at a smaller number of locations on Sunday 9 July.

Speaking at the launch, James Martin said: “I regularly volunteer at Queen’s parkrun and it was

an honour to be at Stormont parkrun to help launch the start of NHS 75 anniversary celebrations. parkrun is inclusive for all as it doesn’t matter what your ability is. It was great to see so many people taking part and enjoying the sunshine.”

Permanent Secretary

Peter May said: “I was very pleased to help launch the ‘parkrun for the NHS’. This is a significant milestone for our health service and provides us with an opportunity to recognise and acknowledge all those who have played a part in our

NHS over the last 75 years. “I would encourage everyone to come and join us on the Saturday 8 July whether you volunteer, walk, jog or run. This is a wonderful opportunity for people to come together and be active outdoors, while recognising and celebrating the incredible contribution of the health service and to thank and support our HSC staff.”

Event Support

Ambassador for parkrun and student nurse Anne Smith said: “It was a pleasure to be asked to attend Stormont

parkrun, one of the four launch events for parkrun for NHS, celebrating the NHS’s 75th birthday. parkrun encourages communities to come together outdoors, to walk, jog, run or volunteer and improve their health and wellbeing. There is no time

limit, no one finishes last, and everyone is welcome to come along. parkrun for NHS’s 75th birthday will be an opportunity to encourage more people to come out on 8th and 9th July and get involved in their local parkrun events to celebrate the work of NHS staff and volunteers as well as the contribution the students make.”

Visit www.parkrun.org.uk/ events to find your nearest parkrun location. Activities and events to mark the 75th anniversary of the NHS will be taking place across the UK, including here in Northern Ireland.

In addition to the parkruns, the George Cross medal is currently on display in the Ulster Museum, and many buildings, historic monuments and other highprofile sites across Northern Ireland will ‘light up’ blue on the evening of 5 July, the date marking 75 years of NHS service.

Dundela Infants’ School help launch this year’s Belfast in Bloom competition

Staff, pupils and parent volunteers from Dundela Infants’ School and Nursery Unit helped launch this year’s Belfast in Bloom 2023 competition.

The school in east Belfast was among the winners of last year’s popular competition picking up an award for Best School Garden.

The school allotment grows flowers as well as fruit and vegetables, among these, strawberries, cucumbers, carrots, potatoes, lettuce, broccoli, kale and tomato plants. It is also home to bug houses and bee-friendly habitats. There is also a wildflower garden at the school.

Classroom Assistant, Kerry Currie, who worked with pupils on the school’s eco-committee to design and plant the allotment, alongside parent volunteers, encouraged other schools in the city to enter the competition this year. She said: “We had a kind of unused space on the school grounds and thought - what was the best way to use it? We felt that gardening, planting and growing was something that our children could gain a lot from, so we put some beds together in the space.

“We started small and then saw the ‘Belfast in Bloom’ competition and

entered it. In our first year, we were lucky enough to become runners-up for Best School Garden.

“Our little space has since grown and got bigger every year. We’ve planted more and more in the space and were absolutely delighted to win Best School Garden in the competition last year. The children were just so pleased and we had a special assembly for them all. It’s just so nice to get them outside, growing and planting – they really enjoy it all. I would definitely recommend other schools entering the competition this year!”

Run by Belfast City Council, Belfast in Bloom celebrates the fine gardening efforts and work of local residents, community groups and businesses across the city. There are individual awards, community awards and awards for commercial premises/businesses and schools.

Residents can enter for the ‘Best Hanging Basket’, ‘Best Window Box’ and ‘Best Front Garden’. Community groups/

organisations can enter for ‘Best Community Street’, ‘Best Community Group’ and ‘Best Community Garden’.

Businesses can enter the commercial category for ‘Best Hotel’, ‘Best Public House’, ‘Best Restaurant’, ‘Best Commercial Street’ and ‘Best Commercial Premises’.

Local schools can enter for ‘Best Kept School Garden’ in the north, south, east and west of the city.

There are also awards for ‘Best Individual Allotment’ and ‘Best Allotment Site’ in Belfast.

The competition is free to enter with the closing date for the school awards’ category on Friday 23 June and the closing date for all other categories - Friday 28 July, with judging taking place in August.

Last year’s winners included Ben Madigan’s Bar and Kitchen in north Belfast, Zuni Hairdressing in University Street, Europa Hotel, Eden Alley and Rainbow Alley. More information on the competition and entering the different categories is at www.belfastcity.gov.uk/ belfastinbloom

What Fruits are best F or dogs to eat?

Here are some safe options.

Apples

Remove the core and the seeds and you’ve got a great fruit snack ready for your dog to enjoy. Apples are high in vitamins A and C, and there’s a good amount of fibre in each serving, making it one of the best types of fruit to offer to your dog.

Do bear in mind that apple seeds contain a

tiny amount of cyanide which is toxic to your pet (and to humans, but the quantity is too small for us to worry about). Make sure you remove the seeds and cut the apple into small pieces your dog can easily handle.

It’s important not to feed too large chunks, as they could be a choking hazard for your pet.

Bananas

When we’re considering what fruits are good for dogs, many of us think of bananas straight away. Containing a fantastic range of nutrients from potassium to fibre and vitamins, bananas make a great treat for humans and dogs alike. However, they’re also high in sugar which means it’s best to only give your pet a little bit at once, and just very occasionally as a reward for those really good deeds. Keep the banana peel out of their reach though, as it can

be difficult for canine stomachs to digest. Chop the fruit up into bitesized pieces for your pup to enjoy.

Mango

Another sweet treat, perfect for summer days, mango can be enjoyed by our canine friends too. But don’t forget to remove the hard pit before offering it to your pet. It’s also best to peel off the skin, as this can be a bit hard to digest. Cut the fruit into bite-sized pieces and offer it in moderation to your canine friend as a delicious treat.

Pears

Bursting with vitamins C and K plus lots of fibre, pears are one of the best ‘five a day’ choices for us humans. When it comes to what fruits are good for dogs, pears are on the safe and nutritious list for our pets too. Remove the seeds, cut the fruit into bitesized chunks and let your

dog dig in.

Strawberries

These red little berries are a favourite in many households and if dogs are present, they might develop a fondness for this summer fruit too. The good news is that strawberries have no toxic substances that dog owners should worry about. But their sugar content can create health problems if this fruit ends up on your dog’s menu too often. Particularly

if your dog is small, it’s worth cutting these fruits up into little pieces to minimise the risk of choking. Find out more about how to feed strawberries to your dog in our guide.

Watermelon

Watermelon, minus the rind and the seeds, is another fruit you can safely offer to you dog. Plus, it’s over 90% water, making it a tasty source of extra hydration in those hot summer months.

Did we mention it’s also packed with potassium and vitamins? Offer watermelon to your pet in two or three bite-sized chunks and watch them enjoy this refreshing treat.

Always remember that if you’re in any doubt over what fruits your dog can eat, it’s best to check with your vet, especially if your dog is overweight, suffering from diabetes or a particular digestive problem.

Best Ways to Protect y our Home

Home security is a vital concern for many homeowners who want to keep their family and belongings safe from intruders, burglars, and other threats. Fortunately, there are many ways to protect your home from unwanted visitors, ranging from simple habits to advanced devices. Here are some of the best ways to protect your home that you might want to consider.

Lock Your Doors and Windows

One of the most basic and effective ways to protect your home is to lock your doors and windows whenever you leave or go to bed. Use sturdy locks that can resist picking, bumping, or kicking, such as grade 1 or grade 2 deadbolts that penetrate the door frame. For windows, use key locks or window stops that prevent them from opening more than a few inches. You can also reinforce your windows with safety or shatterproof glass, bars, grates, or metal bars.

Install a Security System

A security system is a great way to deter and detect intruders, as well as alert you and the authorities in

case of a break-in. A security system can include various components, such as alarms, cameras, motion sensors, door and window contacts, and smart locks. You can choose a professional or DIY system, depending on your budget and preferences. Some systems also offer remote monitoring and control via smartphone apps.

Use Smart Lighting

Lighting is another important factor in home security, as it can make your home look occupied and discourage intruders from hiding in the dark. You can use smart lighting devices that can be programmed to turn on and off at certain times or triggered by motion or sound. You can also use solar-powered or battery-operated outdoor lights that can illuminate your driveway, garden, or entryway.

Secure Your Garage

Your garage is not only a place to store your car and tools, but also a potential entry point for intruders. To

secure your garage, make sure you lock the door that leads to your house, as well as the garage door itself.

You can also use a smart garage door opener that can be controlled remotely or notify you if the door is left open. Additionally, you can cover or frost your garage windows to prevent thieves from seeing what’s inside.

Be Careful with Spare Keys

Many people hide spare keys under doormats, flower pots, or rocks in case they lose or forget their main keys. However, this is also an easy way for intruders to

access your home without breaking anything. Instead of hiding spare keys outside, you can use a wall-mounted key safe that requires a combination code to open. You can also give spare keys to trusted neighbours or friends who live nearby. These are just some of the best ways to protect your home that you can try. By following these tips, you can improve your home’s security and peace of mind. Remember that home security is not a onetime thing, but an ongoing process that requires regular maintenance and updates.

DEMAND ON THE RISE, BEST PLACE TO LIVE IN NORTHERN IRELAND’

Demand for property in Donaghadee has soared following the news that the coastal gem was named as the ‘Best Place to Live’ in Northern Ireland by the Sunday Times Best Places to Live Guide.

Local estate agent John Minnis has seen a rise in demand for sales and lettings in the seaside town, listing 25% more properties in the area when comparing Q1 2023 to the same period in 2022.

Company Director, John Minnis, said:

“In addition to the benefits that Donaghadee being named Northern Ireland’s Best Place to Live has had on tourism and the local economy, there has been an uplift in the demand from people and families that want to live and work here.

“This is unsurprising given its vibrant high street, beautiful coastline, and assortment of cafes and restaurants, making it an idyllic location for households of all shapes and sizes.

“The boost in demand will inevitably lead to an increase in property value, which will be welcome news for current homeowners and potential investors.”

and as the exclusive Guild member for the areas in which we operate, John Minnis is in a unique position to capitalise on this.

Please garden for nature & wildlife: it’s not difficult…or messy!

Despite the appearance of ours being a green and pleasant land, it is not, and our wildlife is in serious decline.

But until we change the big things, the ways that we do things, our use of chemicals, farming practices, development, how we maintain public green places, and so on, we can all help. Just to give wildlife a breathing space, some opportunity to survive, until

there is widespread positive change to the processes which have caused the damage.

Some call it wildlife gardening or nature-friendly gardening. Whatever the title, it’s important, and doesn’t have to be difficult, messy or unsightly.

I have in mind a retirement community where the average age of the residents is about 80. A few years ago, they decided to make their place a haven for wildlife, and with the cooperation of their landlord have largely succeeded. It took time, and a little effort, but actions great and small, stopping the use of pesticides and herbicides, sowing wildflowers, planting native

trees, making relatively small changes to mowing practices, and allowing a few places such as around

the bases of trees or obscure corners to grow naturally, has resulted in flourishing wildlife.

If a bunch of oldies can do it, so can we all.

Bear in mind that these are people born in the 1930s, 40s and 50s, who grew up with the idea that all gardens must be neat and tidy, otherwise they might be regarded by neighbours as neglected, a shaming word. But with careful planning and some ingenuity, they have gardens and grounds which look pretty, and certainly not neglected, but which benefit birds, bees, butterflies and

all the rest.

We can all help our wild plants and creatures to survive by doing gardening with the needs of nature in mind, and, as has been demonstrated in that retirement community, it can also be pleasing to the eye.

Want to help? These days it’s not hard to find wildlife gardening ideas and advice online or in newspapers and magazines. Ulster Wildlife’s site might be a place to start: https://www.ulsterwildlife. org/let-nature-in. When you see the insects and birds, you’ll be glad that you did.

Be safe in the sun

It’s nice to enjoy any sunshine we get, but you should be aware that too much time in the sun is dangerous.

It can damage your skin and lead to skin cancer in later life. It’s important to be sensible in the sun and protect yourself. Remember, you don’t have to be abroad to be exposed to harmful ultra-violet (UV) rays.

Skin cancer and ageing

Too much exposure to the sun will speed up the ageing of your skin, making it leathery and wrinkled. Taking care in the sun will also help to protect you from skin cancer. It is a potentially preventable and curable disease if detected and treated early.http://www. nidirect.gov.uk/index/ information-and-services/ leisure-home-andcommunity/supportand-safety-in-yourhome/safety-at-home/ hot-weather-advice.htm

Use sunscreen

You should apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going out in the sun and re-apply every couple of hours throughout the

day. Remember to re-apply when you have been in the water and never use sunscreen to extend the time you would normally spend in the sun. Wear sunscreen with an sun protection factor of at least 15 that also provides UVA and UVB protection, and re-apply frequently. You should always: seek out shade,

particularly when the sun is at its hottest drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses that are UVA and UVB protective cover up with clothing and a wide-brimmed hat never let your skin burn give kids extra care – use sunscreen, clothing and shade

Primary school pupils in Northern Ireland continue to be among the best in the world in reading

An international survey of pupil achievement in reading shows that young people aged 9 -10 in Northern Ireland are amongst the best readers in the world. Data from the 2021 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) reveals that children from Northern Ireland significantly outperformed those in 52 of the 56 participating countries. Only young people in Singapore and the Republic of Ireland performed better than local pupils in the major international study. The PIRLS study was carried out for the Department of Education by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER).

Department of Education Permanent Secretary, Dr Mark Browne said: “The PIRLS report highlights that our primary school pupils continue to perform strongly in reading in 2021, and that our overall reading

score has increased significantly compared to 2011 when our pupils first took part in PIRLS.

“I am very pleased to note that almost a quarter of our pupils reached the Advanced International Benchmark. This was the third highest percentage internationally. I pay credit to all those primary school teachers and principals who worked so hard to make this happen. It is a fantastic achievement and demonstrates the strength of the primary curriculum and the high levels of attainment achieved by pupils in our primary schools.”

PIRLS 2021 is the fifth in the series of comparative international surveys on reading achievement and has been administered on a five-yearly cycle

since 2001. Northern Ireland participated for the third time in 2021 having previously participated in 2016 and 2011.

Mark Browne continued: “Results from PIRLS show that our pupils’ confidence in reading has remained high as in

previous PIRLS cycles. “The study also reveals parents in Northern Ireland reported one of the highest percentages of pupils that were often exposed to early literacy activities. This was much higher than the international average and highlights

the crucial role parents and guardians play in helping to develop their children from an early age.”

Helping C H ildren Survive Jet l ag

Travelling long distances can be extremely difficult with children, and unfortunately the troubles don’t end once you arrive at your holiday destination.

Children and jet lag are a difficult combination, and helping your children adjust to a new time zone as effortlessly as possible should be top of your travel priorities.

Children who get over jet lag quickly are happy children: those who find it difficult adjusting to a new time zone can often make the first few days of your long-awaited holiday miserable, and also find it hard to readjust once you get back home.

What is Jet Lag?

Jet lag is the fancy term we use to define a disruption of the body’s sleep patterns, or circadian

rhythms. General rules dictate that every time we cross one time zone, we can suffer a day’s disruption in sleep.

That means that if you travel from London to Los Angeles, which is an eighthour time difference, it may take you eight days to get acclimated to the new time zone.

Nobody wants to spend over a week adjusting however, especially if you are only on holiday for ten days! And while adults may have special ways to help them adjust quicker, such as alcohol, sleeping pills and melatonin, children have no such things at their

disposal.

Avoiding Jet Lag

While there are no foolproof ways to avoid jet lag completely, especially on long-haul journeys, there are some tried-andtested methods to help your children – and you - experience a minimum of discomfort. These tips should help...

Keep the kids hydrated. Give your kids plenty of water throughout the flight to avoid illness, headaches and tummy upsets later, exacerbated by lack of sleep. YOU should stay away from the alcohol. Keep moving. Don’t let your kids be complete

zombies on the plane. Instead, encourage them to move about as much as possible – good advice for you as well!

Stick to the new time zone. Don’t let your children sleep the night away on the plane, if they are going to arrive only to discover it’s night-time – again. Keep them up if necessary, so they’ll sleep better when you arrive at your chosen destination.

Setting new sleep schedules a few days before your trip can help.

Eat healthily. Loading up on sugary food will give your children a quick high, then a deep low. In other words, it may eventually have the opposite effect you are hoping to achieve. Plenty of fresh fruit, veg, proteins and carbs is much better.

Coping with Jet Lag

Don’t let jet lag ruin your holiday. If you and your children are finding adjusting to a different time

zone difficult, these tips should help.... Get them up at the “right” time. Don’t allow them to sleep in, even if they have had only a few hours’ sleep. You’ll be paying for it later, when they are wide awake and raring to go – at 4am. Put them to bed at the “right” time. And that means even if that means keeping them up, or putting

them to bed “early”.

Adhering to the new schedule will make all the difference. Keep them outside in the sun. If they’re sleepy and lethargic, take them for a walk outside in the bright sunlight. Don’t let them laze in front of the telly in a darkened hotel room. Keeping them out and about enjoying the bright rays

of the sun will make the adjustment easier.

Be strict. If your child is wide awake in the middle of the night after you arrive, be strict. If you allow them a full night’s entertainment – complete with television programmes, Nintendo games and yummy snacks – you can be sure they’ll wake the following night. Make things as boring as

possible.

Plan Ahead Jet lag is never fun, and when it comes to children, it’s even less enjoyable. In fact, having a toddler or small child up in the middle of the night for several nights in a row is a sure-fire way to ruin the beginning of a holiday, so do all you can beforehand to minimise disruption.

What does summer living mean to you?

Summer is a time to enjoy the outdoors, relax and have fun.

For many people, summer living means creating a comfortable and stylish space in their garden, balcony or porch, where they can lounge, entertain and escape from the heat. Whether it’s a small summer house, a garden room or a shed, these spaces can provide a versatile and cosy retreat for working, studying or simply unwinding. Some of the ways to decorate a summer living space are using bold and juicy colours, floral fabrics, reclaimed wood, lanterns and string lights. These elements can create a cheerful and inviting atmosphere that reflects the season. Alternatively, pastels

can also evoke a summer feel with their soft and soothing tones. Adding some plants, pots and accessories can also enhance the natural beauty of the outdoor environment.

only about furniture and accessories, but also about activities and experiences. Some people like to watch movies, play music or read books in their summer living space. Others like to host parties, barbecues or sleepovers with their friends and family. Whatever the preference, summer living is about making the most of the short and sweet summer in Northern Ireland!

Beat the evening chill and relax out-of-doors into the evening

Summer nights can be chilly, especially here in NI, but that doesn’t mean you have to give up on enjoying your outdoor space. There are many patio heating methods that can keep you

warm and cosy while you dine al fresco, have a drink, or

relax with a book. Whether you prefer electric, gas, or solid

fuel heaters, there is an option that suits your budget, style, and needs. Here are some of the best patio heating methods for summer nights that you can try.

Electric Patio Heaters

Electric patio heaters are convenient and efficient, as they can be turned on and off when required, saving costs and electricity. They also produce directional heat that targets the people around them, instead of wasting heat in the air. Electric patio heaters can be mounted on walls or ceilings, or used as free-standing units that can be moved around. They use short wave lamps that produce heat in bodies and objects,

which means they are not affected by wind or temperature drops.

Gas Patio Heaters

Gas patio heaters are more environmentally friendly than ever, as they use liquid petroleum gas (LPG) that burns cleanly and produces low emissions. They also come in various designs and styles that can enhance the look of your patio, such as wall heaters, heating lamps, and parasol heaters. Gas patio heaters can create a warm and inviting atmosphere for your outdoor space, with a range of sizes and outputs to suit different needs.

Solid Fuel Heaters

Solid fuel heaters are the most traditional and natural way to heat your

patio, as they use wood or charcoal to create fire and warmth. They can also add some charm and character to your outdoor space,

with a variety of materials, shapes, colours, and patterns to choose from. Solid fuel heaters include fire pits, fire bowls, chimineas, and

fireplaces. They can provide a cosy and romantic ambience for your summer nights, with the crackling sound and flickering light of the flames.

Molly O’Connor, a young event rider from Loughinisland, is currently Youth Ambassador for Eventing Ireland and together with Coolnaleen rebel recently won the prestigious Hillcrest 110p in Limerick! We caught up with Molly in-between competitions

Molly told EDA Media : “ Hillcrest 110p was Todd’s (Coolnaleen Rebel’s) third run of the season and he felt amazing going into the dressage after working hard at home with Terry Boon we got a 31.3 so there is definitely loads more room for improvement!

Showjumping wouldn’t be Todd’s best phase but after a winter of hard work with Ian Fearon he is much improved and jumped a lovely clear with no time faults which kept us in the lead going into Cross Country. Todd flew around the course not looking at anything and taking everything in his stride to come home clear and 14 seconds inside the time to bring home a lovely win!”

I would like to thank Eventing Ireland for all the opportunities they have giving me as a youth brand ambassador and for all the amazing events they hold!”

How do you handle the pressure of competing at such a high standard?

“I try to tell myself

that I’m not nervous and try to remember that all the training myself and my ponies have put in will work and that I just need to trust that – trusting in my own riding abilty and the abilities of my ponies is paramount . When I am getting ready I like to take that time to listen to music so it keeps me distracted from thinking about being nervous.”

What’s the one event you’d like to compete in and win?

“I would love to go back to Blair Castle as it was just such an amazing experience and venue it would just be like a dream to win at Blair as they put so much effort into every little detail.”

Have you planned your summer c H ildcare?

Don’t

There is help available with the cost of registered childcare, which can include some summer schemes, as well as year

round providers such as registered childminders, out of school clubs and day nurseries. For example, parents may use Universal Credit, TaxFree Childcare, Childcare Vouchers or Tax Credits to help meet their bills.

Ahead of the summer now is a good time to make sure your family is receiving all the financial support you are entitled to.

Increased support with childcare costs through Universal Credit

In the Spring budget the Chancellor announced an increase in support for childcare costs through Universal Credit that applies for families across the UK from summer 2023.

The maximum support that can be received towards childcare costs from this summer onwards will be £951 per month

for one child and £1630 for two or more children. This represents an increase of 47% over the current maximum support.

Finding suitable childcare

The Family Support NI website www. familysupportni.gov.uk is a key resource for families looking for registered childcare and includes a search function for all registered childcare providers across Northern Ireland.

Local councils and the Education Authority may also provide additional information over the coming months regarding the summer schemes that they are running for school age children.

Alternative working arrangements

In order to manage holiday childcare parents often need to request additional time off, paid

or unpaid, or request to change their working pattern. Flexible working arrangements can take various forms for example part-time working, compressed hours (working your agreed

The S T ory of Sun S creen

Before you slap on the spf this summer spare a thought for the story of a genius product. Sunscreen is a product that we use today to protect our skin from the harmful effects of the sun’s rays, such as sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer. But did you know that sunscreen has a long and fascinating history? Here is a brief overview of how sunscreen was invented and developed over the centuries.

Ancient Sun Protection

The earliest evidence of sun protection comes from ancient civilizations, such as Egypt, Greece, and India, who used natural ingredients to shield their skin from the sun. For example, ancient Egyptians used extracts of rice, jasmine, and lupine plants, which had antiinflammatory, antioxidant, and skin-lightening properties. Ancient Greeks used olive oil, which had moisturizing and soothing effects. Ancient Indians used sandalwood paste, which had cooling and antiseptic effects.

Modern Sunscreen

The first modern sunscreen was invented in the 1930s by different chemists in different countries. In Australia, H.A. Milton Blake formulated

a sunscreen with salol, a chemical that absorbed ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, which cause sunburn. In the United States, Benjamin Green created a sunscreen with cocoa butter and red veterinary petroleum, which formed a physical barrier on the skin. In Switzerland, Franz Greiter developed a sunscreen with benzyl salicylate and benzyl cinnamate, which also absorbed UVB rays. He also introduced the term sun protection factor (SPF), which measures how long a sunscreen can protect the skin from UVB rays.

Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen

However, UVB rays are not the only type of radiation that can damage the skin. Ultraviolet A (UVA) rays can also penetrate deeper into the skin and cause wrinkles, sagging, and skin cancer.

Therefore, in the 1980s, sunscreen manufacturers started to add ingredients that could block or reflect both UVA and UVB rays, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These sunscreens are called broad-spectrum sunscreens,

as they offer more comprehensive protection from the sun.

Future Sunscreen

Today, sunscreen is widely available in various forms, such as lotions, sprays, gels, sticks, and powders. Sunscreen is also regulated by various authorities, such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in

the United States and the European Commission in Europe, to ensure its safety and efficacy. However, sunscreen is not perfect and still has some limitations and challenges. For example, some sunscreen ingredients may cause allergic reactions or environmental issues. Some people may not apply

Dog walkers encouraged to take the lead at NI Water sites

NI Water is appealing to the public to take care of their dog and take the lead when visiting any of its beauty spots.

NI Water is proud to host visitors to many of these sites. However, visitors are reminded that the policy across all NI Water sites is to keep dogs on leads at all times. This is to ensure the safety of both your pets and local wildlife.

Many sites owned by NI Water, such as areas of the Mourne Mountains and the Garron Plateau, are also used by local farmers to graze livestock.

Rebecca Allen, Catchment Officer explains: “Often the presence of a dog is enough to spook a sheep and cause it to harm itself in an attempt to get to safety. If a dog is found to be worrying sheep, its owners may face a fine of up to

£1000 if found guilty of the offence.

“Dogs can also worry cattle and unknowingly carry bacteria into the area, which affects cattle health. We ask that all visitors to NI Water lands follow the Countryside Code for Northern Ireland and keep dogs on leads at all times and bag and bin all dog waste.

Unfortunately, in the past week there has been a tragic incident of a sheep dying as a result of a dog attack on our land, and this is just sad and unacceptable.

“Our countryside areas also provide important habitat for a diverse range of wildlife including rare breeding birds.

Keeping your dog on a lead keeps our wildlife safe and your dog safe

and happy too.”

NI Water thanks all our visitors who keep their dogs on leads when enjoying the

countryside. Check with Dog Friendly NI for a list of dog parks suitable for off lead exercise.

enough sunscreen or reapply it frequently enough. Some people may also neglect other forms of sun

protection, such as clothing, hats, sunglasses, and shade. Therefore, researchers are constantly looking

for new ways to improve sunscreen and make it more user-friendly and ecofriendly. For example, some researchers are exploring nanotechnology to create smaller and more effective sunscreen particles.

Some researchers are also investigating natural sources of sun protection, such as algae or coral. Some researchers are even trying to create edible or drinkable

sunscreens that can protect the skin from within.

Sunscreen is a product that has evolved over time to meet the needs and demands of people who want to enjoy the sun without harming their skin and its use has saved many lives and prevented many diseases. Sunscreen is a product that we should appreciate and use wisely and well!

Summer Barbeque Guide

With the sun beating down and heat slowly rising, it is clear to see that barbeque season has finally arrived. However, if you are thinking of investing in a barbeque, there is a great deal to consider.

Prices for barbeques can range from £10 to the multiple thousands and the extensive range has something to cater for every possible need. Depending on the number of grills, number of additional features and quality of its production – there is a lot to consider when choosing your perfect barbeque.

The timeless debate which has been had over many a family barbeque once again raises it’s head on this occasion – gas or charcoal?

In many cases your

budget might well dictate your choice for you as charcoal barbeques tend to be significantly more cost effective. For those barbeque stalwarts, nothing will compare to a traditional charcoal barbeque and using a gas equivalent is as good as cheating. It is also widely held that the taste from cooking on a charcoal barbeque is distinctive and cannot be reproduced by a modern gas counterpart. Charcoal does, however, take a considerable length of time to heat up whereas with gas, you can begin

cooking almost immediately – providing an obvious advantage. For the sheer convenience of instantaneous cooking, gas barbeques are hard to beat.

In terms of running costs, with gas barbeques you will often ‘rent’ a cylinder and pay for each refill of gas that you require - a 13Kg canister costs approximately £35. With charcoal however, costs approximately £15 for a 10kg bag which will serve up to three medium barbeques.

Other factors that should be considered include if the barbeque has a lid, the number of people you are likely to be cooking for and what type of food you intend to be cooking.

Buying a barbeque with a lid brings a degree of versatility to your barbequing that is not otherwise available. It grants you far greater control over the heat and allows you to

cook food more thoroughly as opposed to burning the outside whilst leaving the inside underdone. If you are sticking to traditional burgers and sausages then perhaps charcoal is for you, however if you wish to branch out and cook chicken or pork then gas may be the safest option. If you have a large family or intend on cooking for guests on a regular basis, it might be worth investing in a gas barbeque as it will give you the reliability and accuracy that is required when hosting for numerous guests. It also brings unrivalled convenience that allows its owner to mingle freely knowing that the cooking is fully under their control.

More upmarket barbeques will also come with various features such as heating racks hat allow food to sit above to the heat of the grill whilst still in the barbeque to ensure that it will remain warm.

1. Elements of Cottage Landscaping Cottage landscaping usually does not involve a formal design but uses free-flowing designs to create an atmosphere of informality. Geometric garden beds and wide curved borders cover the cottage landscape, leaving few grassy spaces. Numerous plants grouped together in small spaces create blocks and swaths of colours that complement one another.

2. Using Plants

Combine tall spiky flowers with rounded masses of flowers for variety. Add foliage plants with bold leaves for contrast. Use deciduous and evergreen trees for added height and seasonal interest. Scatter herbs throughout the garden for a traditional touch.

3. Plant List

• Snapdragons, delphiniums, hollyhocks, lupines and foxgloves have tall spikes

of flowers, while peonies, geraniums and catmint form a mound of flowers. Ferns and hostas add texture and contrast. Rosemary, thyme, sage, parsley and dill are some common herbs.

Use roses, clematis or wisteria on arches and trellises.

4. Paths and Edgings

• aths and edgings in a cottage landscape should look weathered with muted colors. Old bricks, paving stones, crushed gravel or tree bark chips are suitable materials for paths. Terracotta tiles, broken or whole bricks, and broken pieces of clay pots form attractive edgings.

5. Accessories

• White picket fences and wooden arbors or trellises are traditional cottage landscape elements. Antiquestyle birdhouses, birdbaths, weather vanes and sundials are also common accents in a cottage landscape. The furniture is usually constructed of wood or wrought iron.

Light Up yo U r oU tdoor Space

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy your outdoor space, whether it’s for relaxing, entertaining, or gardening.

But when the sun goes down, you don’t have to go inside. With the right outdoor lighting, you can create a warm, inviting, and stylish atmosphere that extends your living space and enhances your home’s curb appeal. There are many outdoor lighting options and methods to choose from, depending on your budget, style, and needs. Here are some of the best outdoor lighting trends for summer 2023 that will help you illuminate your backyard, patio, driveway, and garden.

Smart Garden Lights

If you want to control your outdoor

lights remotely, smart garden lights are the way to go. These lights can be solar-powered, which means they are eco-friendly and cost-effective. You

can also adjust the brightness, colour, and timing of your lights using an app or a voice assistant.

Smart garden lights can help you highlight specific plants or

features in your garden, or create different moods for different occasions.

Hardscape Lighting Hardscape lighting refers to lights that are installed on or

in hard surfaces, such as stairs, pillars, walkways, and edging. These lights can provide safety and security by illuminating dark areas, but they can

also add some flair and drama to your landscape. Hardscape lighting can be used to accentuate sculptures, fountains, or other ornaments in your backyard.

Patio String Lights

String lights are a classic and versatile option for outdoor lighting. They can be hung from the roof, poles, trees, or railings around your patio or deck. They can also be wrapped around columns, pergolas, or trellises.

String lights can create a cosy and romantic atmosphere for your outdoor space, with a variety of shapes, sizes, colours, and styles to

choose from.

Solar-Powered Bollard Lights Bollard lights are tall and slender lights that are usually placed along pathways, driveways, or entrances. They can provide visibility and guidance for your guests, as well as add some elegance and sophistication to your home’s exterior.

Solar-powered bollard lights are a great option if you want to save energy and money. They charge during the day and turn on automatically at night.

Decorative Outdoor Lanterns

Lanterns are another popular and timeless choice for

outdoor lighting. They can be hung from hooks, branches, or wires, or placed on tables, floors, or steps. Lanterns can add some charm and character to your outdoor space, with a range of materials, shapes, colours, and patterns to suit any style. Lanterns can also be battery-powered or solar-powered for convenience and sustainability.

Outdoor lighting is not only functional but also fun and creative. Have fun transforming your outdoor space into a magical and memorable place that you and your family will love this summer!

A shed is not just a place to store your garden tools and equipment. It can also be a versatile space for various purposes, such as a workshop, an office, a gym, or an art studio. Here are some ideas that you might want to consider.

Workshop

If you enjoy doing practical tasks, such as woodworking, metalworking, or tool cleaning, a shed can provide you with a sheltered, tranquil environment where you can work without disturbing your family or neighbours. You can customise your shed with shelves, cabinets, workbenches, and power outlets to suit your needs.

Garden Office

Working from home has many benefits, such as saving time and money on commuting, having more flexibility, and avoiding office distractions. A shed can be easily modified to accommodate your business needs, such as installing so-

lar power, lighting, heating, and internet connection. A garden office shed can also help you separate your work and personal life.

Home Gym

If you want to stay fit and healthy, but don’t have time or money to go to the local gym, a shed can be a perfect solution. You can turn your shed into a home gym by adding some fitness equipment, such as dumbbells, treadmills, bikes, or yoga mats. A shed can offer a naturally cool temperature and a sturdy floor for your workout.

Art Studio

If you have a creative passion, such as painting, drawing, or pottery, a shed can be your ideal space to

unleash your artistic talent. You can choose a shed with windows to get natural light and ventilation. You can also decorate your shed with easels, canvases, shelves, and other art supplies.

Playhouse

A shed can also be a fun and safe place for your kids to play. You can convert your shed into a playhouse by replacing damaged wood, hammering down nails,

cleaning it up, and adding some colourful paint and furniture. You can also let your kids choose their own theme and accessories for their playhouse.

These are just some of the best uses for a shed that you can try. A shed can be more than just a storage space. It can be a multifunctional space that adds value and enjoyment to your home and garden.
