PRESTIGIOUS BLUEFLAG STATUS

Three of Newry, Mourne and Down’s most scenic beaches—Cranfield, Murlough and Tyrella—have been awarded the internationally recognised Blue Flag Award, reaffirming their place among Northern Ireland’s top coastal destinations.

The announcement was made at a special ceremony hosted at Belfast Harbour Office, where environmental charity Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful revealed this year’s list of award-winning beaches and marinas. A total of 22 sites across five council areas were honoured, including 16 beaches receiving the prestigious Blue Flag and six gaining the Seaside Award—both symbols of excellence in safety, environmental management, cleanliness and water quality.

Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Councillor Pete Byrne, praised the achievement, saying: “Our coastline is renowned for its natural beauty, rich biodiversity, and welcoming communities. I am delighted that Cranfield, Murlough and Tyrella have once again retained their Blue Flag status—an honour that reflects the dedication and hard work of Council staff, local volunteers and community groups. Their commitment ensures these spaces remain safe, clean and accessible for everyone.”

He added, “As we head into the summer season, I encourage residents and visitors to enjoy these beaches responsibly, follow ‘Leave No Trace’ principles, and help maintain the high standards we’ve worked hard to achieve.”

from the growing threats of climate change and pollution.”

Eric Randall, CEO of Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful, echoed these sentiments, stating: “We are incredibly proud to see 22 beaches and marinas across Northern Ireland achieve Blue Flag or Seaside Award status. These sites offer world-class experiences, but with that recognition comes the responsibility to protect them

The Blue Flag, one of the world’s most recognised eco-labels, signifies that a beach or marina meets strict international standards. While Blue Flag marinas display their flags year-round, Blue Flags at beaches are lowered if water quality is deemed unsafe for public bathing.

The awards mark the beginning of the 2025 bathing season, assuring beachgoers that Northern Ireland’s coastline remains a clean, safe and beautiful place to visit.

PLANNING A TRIP ABROAD WITH YOUR PET? HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Planning a Trip Abroad with Your Pet? Here’s What You Need to Know

As a nation of devoted pet lovers, it's no surprise that many of us want to take our furry companions on holiday But travelling abroad with a pet requires some forward planning to ensure a smooth and stress-free experience for both you and your animal

Here are some essential tips to help you prepare:

Check vaccinations early: Make sure your pet’s vaccinations are up to date before booking your trip Don’t leave it to the last minute – some vaccines require a waiting period before travel

Animal Health Certificate required: The EU Pet Passport issued in Great Britain is no longer valid for travel to the EU You’ll now need to obtain an Animal Health

Certificate (AHC) from your vet within 10 days of travel

Feed lightly before travel: If you ' re going on a long journey, give your pet a light meal beforehand and pack small snacks for the road – for pets and people alike!

Plan regular breaks: Just like humans, pets need to stretch their legs and have comfort stops Plan your route with petfriendly breaks in mind

Pack the essentials: Bring extra collars, leads, bedding, waste bags, and plenty of fresh water Staying hydrated is especially important in warmer climates

Protect against pests: Warmer countries often have more biting insects, so speak to your vet about appropriate preventative treatments for ticks, fleas, and other pests

Prepare for the return: Carry printed medical instructions in the local language in case your pet needs veterinary care while abroad

With the right planning, your pet can enjoy the holiday just as much as you do Always consult your vet well ahead of travel and enjoy your adventure together!

Top tips for protecting your skin from cancer

Check when you are most at risk from UV radiation Levels of UV radiation are highest in Northern Ireland between March and October – even when it is cool or overcast

If you are going outdoors, check what the UV index will be throughout the day You can check daily and hourly UV index forecasts via most weather apps on your mobile phone

Help protect your skin when the UV index is 3 or more by following this guidance:

1 Stay in the shade between 11 00am and 3 00pm, when UV rays are strongest

2 Cover up with suitable clothing

3 Wear a broad brimmed hat and sunglasses with 100% UV protection

4 Buy sunglasses that have a CE mark or carry British Standard BS EN ISO 12312-1

5 Use sunscreen on exposed skin; an SPF of at least 30 and UVA 4 stars as recommended by the Department of Health and National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.

6 Babies under six months should stay out of direct sunlight If exposure to sunlight is unavoidable, apply a small amount of high protection sunscreen to exposed areas, such as the cheeks and back of the hands For children over six months choose SPF 30 or SPF 50 to protect against UVB rays and minimum UVA 4 stars Higher SPF will give more protection

7 Avoid sunburn by never allowing your skin to go pink or red in the sun Sunburn doesn’t have to be raw, peeling or blistering skin; for people with darker skin, it might feel tender, irritated or itchy

8 Choose and use the correct amount of sunscreen – an adult needs six teaspoons distributed evenly on the body with an SPF of at least 30 and UVA 4 or 5 stars

9.Avoid sunbeds – they can cause over exposure to UV radiation.

10 Check your skin at least once a month, be aware of any changes, and speak to your GP if you notice any mole changes, new moles or abnormal skin changes

BIG BOOST FOR WORKING PARENTS:

CHILDCARE SUBSIDY EXTENDED TO SCHOOL-

AGE CHILDREN IN NORTHERN IRELAND

In a major win for working families, Education Minister Paul Givan has announced a £55 million investment in early learning and childcare including a game-changing extension of the Northern Ireland Childcare Subsidy Scheme to cover school-age children from September 2025 The move follows the success of the scheme, which has already helped thousands of parents manage the high cost of childcare Now, even more families are set to benefit a change that couldn’t come at a better time for parents juggling work and family life.

“I pledged to help working parents with the cost of childcare, and I’m proud to deliver on that promise,” said Minister Givan “This extension will make a real difference to families across Northern Ireland.”

What’s Changing?

The Childcare Subsidy Scheme, first launched in September 2024, currently supports families with children in early years settings

It offers a 15% discount on registered childcare costs, helping to ease one of the biggest financial burdens many young families face

From September 2025, the scheme will expand to include school-age children, increasing the number of children supported from around 15,000 to 24,000 a remarkable 60% uplift. For many households, this means a combined saving of up to 32% on childcare bills when used alongside the UK-wide Tax-Free Childcare programme

What It Means for Families

For parents, this announcement is more than a policy change it’s a lifeline With rising costs and stretched schedules, affordable childcare is a crucial support that allows many to remain in the workforce while ensuring their children receive safe, enriching care It’s support where it’s needed most, at a time when it matters most. So Safari, So Good – From Roaring Memories to New Adventures

For many growing up in 1970s Northern Ireland, the Causeway Safari Park near Ballymoney remains a cherished memory. Open until 1997, it offered thrilling drive-through encounters with lions, cheeky monkeys, and unforgettable moments like posing with lion cubs. While it wasn’t Jurassic Park, it had its own wild charm – especially when monkeys decided to mess with your wing mirrors!

Today, Northern Ireland continues to offer exciting animal encounters. Belfast Zoo remains a top attraction, with over 130 species and a strong focus on conservation For hands-on fun, The Ark Open Farm and Streamvale Open Farm let children feed and interact with animals. Annaginny Park and Farm and Mountpanther Farm Park offer relaxed, family-friendly days out. Near the old safari park, Rose Park Farm adds a beach and play zones to its animal offerings.

For something different, Exploris Aquarium in Portaferry showcases marine life, while World of Owls in Antrim introduces visitors to birds of prey and other exotic animals.

Though the drive-through days are gone, Northern Ireland’s animal parks continue to create magical, memory-making moments for families.

NEW ‘LANGUAGE LAUNCHPAD’ AIMS TO BOOST EARLY YEARS COMMUNICATION

ACROSS NORTHERN IRELAND

www.helpkidstalk.co.uk.

The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) NI has launched Language Launchpad, a new expertled initiative designed to strengthen speech, language and communication development in children aged 0–5 Developed in response to growing concerns around early years communication needs, the free toolkit supports families, early years professionals, and carers with practical, easy-to-use resources.

Funded by the Department of Education as part of the SEN Reform Agenda, Language Launchpad builds on the successful Help Kids Talk programme. It offers bitesize video lessons, printable tip sheets, and practical strategies codesigned with parents, educators, and childcare staff The aim is to give every child the best possible start in life through early intervention.

Recent RCSLT NI research, based on feedback from over 1,000 individuals, revealed that 91% of professionals working with young children and 96% of speech and language therapists reported a rise in the number of children with speech, language and communication needs. Additionally, 98% of early years practitioners noticed an increase in complexity, yet only 42% felt children entering their settings were ready for the curriculum. Nearly half of parents (49%) said they didn’t know where to access support.

Since the rollout, over 150 organisations including schools, health trusts, and community groups have taken up training, leading to greater confidence and improved support strategies for children

Ruth Sedgewick, Head of RCSLT NI, said: “Speech, language and communication are every child’s right. Language Launchpad is about giving families and professionals the tools they need to support development from the start.”

Language Launchpad resources are now available for free at: www.helpkidstalk.co.uk.

Have you planned your summer childcare?

With brighter nights upon us, many working parents are starting to think about their summer childcare plans. Additional childcare costs over the school summer holidays can put a significant added strain on already stretched family finances.

Find out what financial support is available

There is help available with the cost of registered childcare, which can include some summer schemes, as well as year round providers such as registered childminders, out of school clubs and day nurseries. For example, parents may use Universal Credit, Childcare Vouchers or Tax-Free Childcare and the NI Childcare Subsidy Scheme to help meet their bills Ahead of the summer now is a good time to make sure your family is receiving all the financial support you are entitled to

Increased support through Universal Credit and the NI Childcare Subsidy Scheme

In the Spring budget the Chancellor confirmed an increase in support for childcare costs through Universal Credit that applies for families across the UK.

The maximum support that can be received towards childcare costs over this summer is £1,031 per month for one child and £1,768 for two or more children

In Northern Ireland, the Education Minister announced a 10% increase to the maximum amount of support that can be claimed through the NI childcare Subsidy Scheme to £184 per month per child, or £376 per month of the child has a disability

With these increases in support available, it is important to check that you are receiving the best form of support for your family’s circumstances.

Finding suitable childcare

The Family Support NI website www familysupportni gov uk is a useful resource for families looking for registered childcare and includes a search function for all registered childcare providers across Northern Ireland, including summer schemes

Alternative working arrangements

Talk to your employer to see if they can facilitate alternative or flexible working patterns if you find it challenging to manage childcare over the summer.

Flexible working arrangements can take various forms for example part-time working, compressed hours (working your agreed hours over fewer days), job sharing or term-time only working.

Further information

To find out more about what financial support you are entitled to with your summer childcare, contact our Family Benefits Advice Service on 028 9267 8200 or email hello@employersforchildcare.org.
