SCHOLARSHIP
ECU'S fraternity and sorority community takes immense pride in their scholastic achievement. Both the new members and the undergraduate FSL grade point averages regularly exceed the undergraduate average at ECU. Chapters place great emphasis on encouraging, developing and maintaining academic progress. All groups have minimum standards for membership that serve to encourage and hold members accountable for academic success. Councils and chapters provide tutors, study programs and other incentives to promote academic excellence. Additionally, time management skills of fraternity and sorority members improve as they work to achieve their academic goals, while also meeting chapter involvement expectations.
LEADERSHIP
Membership in a fraternity or sorority offers you opportunities to develop your leadership potential, both within the chapters and on campus. From day one, members can enhance their leadership skills through involvement with committees, event planning, and personal and professional development programs. Chapters take great pride in serving in leadership positions in a variety of campus groups including the Student Government Association, the Student Activities Board, the Homecoming Committee, NAACP, Club Sports, ResidenceLife Association, and many others.
SERVICE
East Carolina University is a university that prides itself on serving the local and rural community and chapters support a strong tradition of service to our campus, the local and global community. Each year, chapters donate thousands of dollars, more importantly, thousands of volunteer hours to various charities and local organizations.
While many chapters focus on national philanthropies, all support local agencies, as well. Each council promotes collective service and philanthropy among its member chapters. There is no denying that service is a foundational component of the fraternity and sorority experience.
SOCIAL
ECU's fraternity and sorority community provides a diverse selection of social opportunities for members varying from brotherhood and sisterhood events to social functions between organizations. Friendship is a core value of fraternities and sororities, and groups work to provide events and activities that promote relationshipswithin the chapter and in the entire fraternity and sorority community. Council members and general members from the various chapters of the community actively participate and serve on planning committees for student life events like Polar Bear Plunge, Greek Fest and other campus-sponsored events. These social opportunities help members form bonds and develop relationships that last far beyond their collegiate years.
Thesearegeneralrequirements. Chapter specificrequirementsaredetermined bychapters.
ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
Individualsinterestedin particpating in recruitment or intake must be full-time undergraduate students at ECU. Each chapter requires a minimum grade point average forjoining. Additionally, eachcouncil has a minimum grade point average requirement for participation in recruitment. More details can be found in the detailedcouncil information.
FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS
Joining a fraternity or sorority carries a financial commitment thatcovers the cost of participation inchapter activities, dues and fees to the inter/nationalorganizationand housing costs for groups with chapter facilities. The amount varies by council and chapter, and each organization will have different payment plans. New members can expect to pay more for the first semester of membership because of national intiation fees and other one-time costs.
SERVICE REQUIREMENTS
Being a member of a fraternity or sorority involvesgiving back to thelocal community as well as to eachchapter'snational philanthropy orfocusedservice program andinitiatives. Eachchapter hasits own service requirements for individual membersthat may range fromcompletingindividual service hours to attending chapter events. Participating in these service events provides members with opportunites to get involved in the community and learn the importance of giving back to others.
HOUSING REQUIREMENT
Living in a fraternity or sorority house is a great transition fromliving in a residencehall becauseit has many of the same benefits, plus the opportunity to live with fraternity brothers or sorority sisters. Chapter house living usually includes sharing a room with at least one chaptermember andhaving meals served Monday through Friday. Residents also have theconvenience of living in thehub of many chapter activities. Most fraternity and sorority housing corporations operate muchlike a landlord and musthave all available spots occupied. Most chapters have a house director who lives within the houseto provide security, as well as supervision of meal plans, maintenance and housekeeping. Eachchapterhouse is different fromchapter tochapter.

QUESTIONS
HOW WILL MY STUDENT BENEFIT FROM JOINING A FRATERNITY OR SORORITY?
The benefits include building leadership skills, academic support, and service opportunities. The fraternity and sorority experience isexcellenttraining for aspiring leaders. Many chapters organize tutoring programs, provide networking opportunities, and offer a variety of educational resources. Membership also brings students a support system that can last a lifetime.
WHAT ARE THE FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES?
Your student will have financial responsibilities when it comes to joining a fraternity or sorority. In most organizations, there is a one-time new member/initiation fee as well as semester membership dues. Depending on which organization your student want to join will determine the amount of dues they will have to pay semesterly. Below is a snapshot of the average breakdown per council and we encourage students to ask questions to clarify the financial obligation before joining.
HOW WILL JOINING AFFECT MY STUDENTS ACADEMIC PURSUITS?
The number one goal for your student at ECU, should be to graduate. Membership in a fraternity or sorority can help your students achieve this as long as they work hard and commit themselves to being successful in the classroom. Most fraternities/sororities not only have a minimum GPA requirement to join but also to remain a member. Since obtaining a degree is the number one reason for attending college, our organizations work to help make sure members are successful in the classroom.
WHAT
ABOUT HAZING?
It's important to understand that hazing at East Carolina University WILL NOT be tolerated and all students should feel safe joining and maintaining membership. However, hazing can occur in any student organization, including Greek organizations. If you ever feel that your student may be participating in inappropriate activities regarding hazing, encourage them to complete an incident report with ECU's Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities.
WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT FOR MY STUDENT WHILE JOINING AND AFTER BECOMING A MEMBER?
On average, your student should expect to contribute a few hours per week for meetings and activities. If your student has the time and desire, they can also choose to participate in optional activities, such as holding an office, attending social events, helping out with carious projects, etc. Some organizations require more time than others. Advise your child to ask questions regarding time commitments during their recruitment/intake process.
