HOW WILL MY STUDENT BENEFIT FROM JOINING A FRATERNITY OR SORORITY?

The benefits include building leadership skills, academic support, and service opportunities. The fraternity and sorority experience isexcellenttraining for aspiring leaders. Many chapters organize tutoring programs, provide networking opportunities, and offer a variety of educational resources. Membership also brings students a support system that can last a lifetime.

WHAT ARE THE FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES?

Your student will have financial responsibilities when it comes to joining a fraternity or sorority. In most organizations, there is a one-time new member/initiation fee as well as semester membership dues. Depending on which organization your student want to join will determine the amount of dues they will have to pay semesterly. Below is a snapshot of the average breakdown per council and we encourage students to ask questions to clarify the financial obligation before joining.

HOW WILL JOINING AFFECT MY STUDENTS ACADEMIC PURSUITS?

The number one goal for your student at ECU, should be to graduate. Membership in a fraternity or sorority can help your students achieve this as long as they work hard and commit themselves to being successful in the classroom. Most fraternities/sororities not only have a minimum GPA requirement to join but also to remain a member. Since obtaining a degree is the number one reason for attending college, our organizations work to help make sure members are successful in the classroom.

WHAT

ABOUT HAZING?

It's important to understand that hazing at East Carolina University WILL NOT be tolerated and all students should feel safe joining and maintaining membership. However, hazing can occur in any student organization, including Greek organizations. If you ever feel that your student may be participating in inappropriate activities regarding hazing, encourage them to complete an incident report with ECU's Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities.

WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT FOR MY STUDENT WHILE JOINING AND AFTER BECOMING A MEMBER?

On average, your student should expect to contribute a few hours per week for meetings and activities. If your student has the time and desire, they can also choose to participate in optional activities, such as holding an office, attending social events, helping out with carious projects, etc. Some organizations require more time than others. Advise your child to ask questions regarding time commitments during their recruitment/intake process.
