The Bet When Warren says,

I’ll bet you a million dollars!

– he means it!

In 2007, Warren Buffett bet a million dollars that an index fund would outperform a collection of hedge funds chosen by Protégé Partners over the course of ten years. Each side chose a charity to win the proceeds if they won the bet and Warren (wisely) chose News Travels Fast!

Girls Inc. of Omaha.

The bet ended on December 31, 2017 and Warren – and the girls! – won.

In the original bet, Warren and Protégé each put $320,000 into bonds that were expected to appreciate to $1 million dollars by the end of the ten years. In 2012, both sides agreed to boost the pot by buying Berkshire B shares as part of the bet. The Berkshire B shares increased the worth of the bet to a whopping $2.2M.

The former home of the Poor Clare Nuns will soon be Protégé House, a home to Girls Inc. alums. #SisterhoodLives

Protégé House In 2018, the former convent of the Poor Clare nuns on Military Avenue will be transformed into housing for our young women transitioning to independent living, with an emphasis on young women aging out of the foster care system. The funds generated from the proceeds of the bet will help provide operational funds for this new project, ensuring that the current operations in North and South Omaha will not be compromised as we seek to support our alums on their journeys to confident, selfsufficient womanhood.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines protégé as “one who is protected or trained or whose career is furthered by a person of experience” which is exactly what we plan to do in the new space. The name of the facility, Protégé House, honors both the company that provided the $2.2M gift which will keep the home up and running, as well as honoring the spirit of the work and the mentoring that will take place within its walls.
