VIGOROUS CAMPAIGNING SINCE 1986

Science over politics now! say students

The following speech was made by Byron High students Isabella Stephens and Mia Thom at Friday’s youth rally in Byron calling for immediate action on climate change.

A

s a nation we stand on the precipice of change. Our governments, major corporations and businesses contain the very power that will either condemn or save our future. The actions we take now dictate the very fate of our world forever. The latest International Panel on Climate Change conducted by the UN estimated we have 12 years to limit the climate-change catastrophe. Only 12 years for global warming to be restrained to a maximum 1.5 degrees. Any warmer than 1.5 degrees, even by half a degree, will be catastrophic.

Mass species loss We are talking about the very difference between coral reefs [surviving or] becoming completely eradicated. It’s the difference between the loss of millions of species of insects, animals and plants.

It’s also the prospect of extreme drought, floods, bushfires and poverty that will affect a large proportion of the world.

Time is running out Time is running out. In 12 years, I will be 28. With so much of my life yet to live, it scares me, petrifies me that despite the overwhelming evidence that exists, the statistical trends, indisputable data from the world’s top scientists, our government refuses to listen. Despite continual lobbying and protesting they continue to invest in coal, ignoring renewable alternatives. Scientists have estimated that greenhouse-gas emissions need to be down to zero by 2050. To not exceed the 1.5 degree tipping point – this is our future, and we do not even have the right to vote. But this doesn’t make our voices less valid

– we the voters of tomorrow. Next year I can vote and the prospect of having this right is vital to not only myself but also the younger generations of this nation. Finally I will have a voice that can be recognised and heard and in a time of debatable political leaders, our voice can mean the difference between a Barack Obama or a Donald Trump. For the urgency of the situation has reached a critical point and we have to realise the extent of the emergency that is unfolding. This is a government resistant to change. And we cannot allow those who have triggered this climate emergency to restrict political action. We cannot be disheartened, for our politicians are already listening, with the senate voting to show support for striking students. Prime minister Scott Morrison tried to

shut us down with his vocal attack, claiming schools were for ‘learning, not activism’.

PM’s comments ĶōōȒĶŕĪşſŔĕĎǽȞĶīŕşſëŕƐ This ill-informed, ignorant judgment conveys just how out of touch the Liberal-National government is with the youth of Australia. It shows his disregard and disrespect for the very future leaders of our world. This comment has only heightened the momentum of this movement and unified students further. All throughout the world we are witnessing this mass surge in action, youth globally coming together and demanding politicians deliver the safe future that we are owed. Individually it can be isolating and frightening, to hear about the sheer scale of this issue, ▶ Continued on page 3
