ould this be the year that Byron Shire Council takes meaningful, decisive action on building a rail trail between Mullumbimby and Byron Bay? For nearly three years locals have watched with wry smiles as hundreds of thousands of people have flocked to the rail trail in the Tweed Shire, pouring tens of millions into that Shire’s local economy. Meanwhile, plans to extend the trail into the Byron Shire have ground to a halt. In one of its last acts of 2025, Byron Shire Council quietly abandoned its plan to apply for a $1m grant from the NSW government to help fund the rail trail. The reason? The application wasn’t completed in time. ‘There are significant land tenure issues and questions for the rail corridor which means that we’re not ready to put in a grant, by tomorrow anyway,’ Labor councillor Asren Pugh told the last meeting of 2025. ‘And so my motion just removes that from the grant applications that will go in tomorrow and asks staff to ensure that they have grant applications ready to go for the next round. The meeting then heard that a key vegetation study in relation to the project had been completed by staff but not yet given to councillors or released publicly. ‘It hasn’t come to Council, yet…’ the relevant staff member said when asked about this key report by Greens Mayor Sarah Ndiaye. ▶ Continued on page 2
