The Byron Community Centre was swarming with glitterati on Friday evening for the staging of the 2011 Voyeur Fashion Exposé. Twelve designers showcased their spring/summer collections with creations ranging from evening gowns, Tshirts and silk chemises to swimwear, underwear and mermaid fins. Innovative swim and surf label designers Marisa Sidoti and Joceline Godfrey, from the label Muther of All Things, were awarded the ‘Designer of the Year’ award. Alexandra Leeb, who opened the show, was awarded a judges’ commendation. The ‘ooh ahh’ factor of the evening appeared when model Gianna trod the runway in ‘The Rainbow Dress’, designed by Lisa Clarke from Eurynome Creations. A nuno-felted merino wool on
white silk stole the show, and saw Lisa leave the event with two trophies: ‘Outfit of the Year’ and the ‘Anna Middleton Award’, which will see her range in Anna’s Byron Bay store. Speaking of her win, Lisa said she always tries to be positive and believed she was in with a chance. ‘I was just so excited and honoured and proud to have my creation celebrated at Voyeur.’ It wasn’t only the designers that got recognised for their efforts; Lismore’s Jennifer Hamilton was awarded the ‘Face of Voyeur’ which won her a studio photo shoot with Jessie Prince.
Pop-up store A first for this year’s Voyeur is the pop-up store which will open for just this week at 46 Fletcher Street in Byron. The store will feature all the outfits from the 12 designers.
ECOfishers membership numbers don’t add up Mary Gardner
An Echo investigation casts doubt on membership numbers of the recreational fishing group East Coast Organisation of Fishers (ECOfishers) and its strengths as a lobby group. Recently the fishing group successfully lobbied the NSW government for a review of state marine parks. CEO Ken Thurlow calls the parks, ‘Labor/Green environmental duds’, which are ‘solely unjustified fishing closures.’ While ECOfishers claim 15,000 financial members on their annual report at the end of 2010, The Echo learned from Fair Trading NSW that its income from memberships for that year was $6,355, down from $8,734 in the previous year.

Individual and family memberships cost $10 or $20 respectively and club membership costs $150, which confers voting rights for two delegates, as opposed to simply one for individual or family members. This system of voting rights and fees, taken together with the total membership fees, cannot support claims that the group represents so many members.
Shared membership? Over the past eleven years, a political party and two lobby groups sprung from NSW Fishing Clubs Association (NSWFCA), the state’s oldest fishing group. In 2000, Robert Smith, longtime member and current president of NSWFCA, founded The Fishing Party.
In 2005, more members from within the NSWFCA also started a political lobby group. Their spokesman at that time, Rod Burtson, announced in the newsletter that the group would continued on page 2
