Paperbark arts classic

Responding to the flood threat

Exploiting the sensuous, soft, skin-like qualities of paper bark, sculptor Sabine Brosche puts the finnishing touch to her Byron Arts Classic winning piece, Fragile World #1. Exhibition co-ordinator Tess Cullen said ‘We have had very good numbers through the Community Centre, and perhaps because of the inclement weather people have been spending two and three hours taking in the 340 art works. We’ve sold a lot of work with six pieces going to Sydney, Melbourne and further afield.’ Photo by Jeff ‘Barking up the wrong tree’ Dawson.

Six-day Bluesfest approved by Council Council votes six in favour, one against, for a one-off extra day Hans Lovejoy

The prospects of a second Bob Dylan appearance appears promising after Council voted 6-1 in favour of the extra day. Cr Cameron voted against while Cr Morrisey was absent. A relieved Bluesfest director Peter Noble told The Echo he will now try to secure Dylan. ‘I feel confident it will happen,’ he said by phone while overseas.

‘We are virtually sold out so this day will hopefully be an opportunity for locals to grab a ticket.’ The extra day had been in limbo since Council deferred a meeting last November. At the time Mr Noble claimed that the delay could mean the loss of the booking, and had started the process for both for Ministerial intervention and a Land and Environment court application.

‘I wasn’t trying to attack council staff,’ he said, referring to the intervention and court application, ‘It was just an attempt for my small business to proceed in a successful manner, within the guidelines of our constitution.’ Mr Noble claims he is ‘not interested in expanding’ the yearly event beyond its current capacity. He did however fire a broadside at Council’s Festival Events Policy,

which he claims is ineffectual. ‘It’s not a gateway for start up events,’ he said. ‘Council has no Events Manager either, and I am told by NSW Tourism that Tweed is now the leading Shire with regards to festivals and events.’ Byron United President Sevegne Newton said she is thrilled that Council approved the extra day. ‘It continued on page 2

Byron Shire is bracing for more rain. As of going to press, www.bom. gov.au/ issued a warning for renewed moderate to major flooding along the Richmond and Wilsons River for the next two days. In response, Council says it has moved to protect residents and important community infrastructure against possible flood damage. ‘Council is doing all it can to minimise any impact predicted bad weather might have on residents and important community infrastructure, should it arrive,’ Community Infrastructure Executive Manager Phillip Holloway said. Mr Holloway said Council’s response to the flood threat had already included the following measures: Pallets of sandbags have been filled in preparation for use by the SES; ‘Water Over Road’ signage has been taken to key hot spots throughout the Shire, eg Mullumbimby Road near Uncle Tom’s pies; Shire roads which are expected to be affected during the weekend have been listed on the www.myroadinfo.com.au website; and information from Emergency Management Australia will be distributed to Council’s access points throughout the Shire. The information covers what to do before, during, and after a flood event. Administrative staff say they will also update road closure information on the www.myroadinfo.com.au website, and will monitor the South Golden Beach Pump Station Telemetry. Mr Hollway said that while Council staff will liaise with the SES regarding the possible need for more sandbags, Byron Shire residents requiring sandbags during the weekend had to phone the SES on 132 500. CountryLink customers are also being advised of changes to services due to flooding of the rail line in Northern NSW. Flooding between Glen Innes and Grafton has caused cancellation to the road coach service between Moree and Grafton until further notice.
