Dear Rotaractors,

DRCC MESSAGE

Its wonderful to write to you all again and communicate through channel “Genesis”. What a lovely name. The record keeper of a new beginning. Beginning of yet another year which will keep the flag of the Rotary District 3230 flying very High. I have had the opportunity and pleasure of interacting with so many of you, attend some of the installations, attend the DRC meetings and more importantly listen to the ideas, feel the camaraderie and the energy that only youth can have and am loving every minute of it. Usually the words Information & communication are used interchangeably but remember information is given out while communication is complete only when the people to whom it is intended to receive it. I will request each and every club to use this Bulletin as a medium of communication and not just as a information tool. This bulletin apart from being circulated to the Rotractors is also sent to every Rotary District officer starting from the District Governor to every Rotarian through his Club President/ Secretary. Next fortnight when I write I am sure we would have many interesting programs executed, many more planned, ”Kabali” released , Trio Rally done and executed, the final touches on the planning for the Terry Fox run and more importantly we would have had the 1st set of monthly Rotaract awards announced for : 1. The most innovative project executed by a Rotaract club 2. The best Rotaract club- Parent Rotary club involved projects 3. The best club bulletin/ report. Go Make A Difference & more importantly document it. Warm Regards PHF Rtn.Srinivasan.R, Past President Rotary Club of Madras North (2014-15) District Rotaract Chairman (2016-17)

DRC UPDATES The second DRC for the mad year was held on 17th of July 2016, at Shankar Business Space New No.5, Old No.4, T. Nagar, Nana Street, Chennai. The DRC meeting was hosted by Rotaract Club of Ambattur and there were totally 78 Rotaractors present. 21 club announcements and 6 district announcements were made in addition to which special guest, Mrs. Vajidha Hameed, founder and trustee of Agal foundation, spoke about their project “Thrash the Trash”, with childlike fervour and enthusiasm inviting Rotaractors to be a part of their journey in making Chennai, trash free.

TERRY FOX RUN “Don’t give up, you can make it!” – are words which can boost anybody’s confidence. These were the words which motivated, Terry, whose left leg was strong and muscular whereas, his right leg was a mere stump fitted with an artificial limb made of fibreglass and steel. He’d lost the leg to cancer when he was 18. Terry Fox ran 3,339 miles to raise $1 million towards Cancer research and to show people that cancer is merely a page in one’s life and it can’t spoil all the pages of their life. This iconic run is recreated by millions across the globe every year, and a cancer survivor, Akash Dube, brought the run to Chennai in 2009. After 5 successful runs with over 50,000 supporters, Terry Fox run is geared up for its 6th run in Chennai, on 21st August 2016, at 8 a.m. at IIT- Madras. This run organised by Rotary club of Madras East in association with the Terry Fox foundation, has raised about Rs.100,000,000, towards cancer research in the past years and is looking forward to a huge participation for the Chennai Run this year!!! Women in India-a better half of Indian society, today, are becoming the most vulnerable section as far as their safety and security is concerned. When we turn the pages of a newspaper, we come across many headlines reporting cases of sexual assault, molestation, sexual harassment, rapes, trafficking, ill treatment of women in houses, violence against women in remote areas etc. What does this indicate? This certainly implies that there has been an increasing trend of such sexual overdrives in present generation. Our supreme law of land i.e. our Indian Constitution has envisaged a dream of true social, economic and political democracy which guarantees the rich and moral principles of equality (of status, opportunity, law) for our citizens but this has not yet been fully realized. Every single day single women, young girls, mothers and women from all walks of life are being assaulted, molested, and violated. The streets, public transport, public spaces in particular have become the territory of the hunters. While the ones already hunted down weep in silence or in disdain, the rest fight their way to a basic life with dignity. There is an unspoken war on the streets. Young school and college going girls use books to shield themselves, other women wear full-covered attire to protect their bodies, and others avoid the mere glance of the roving gaze. How long women would be victimized? Would this situation ever change? Whose fault is it? The most convenient is to blame the woman for what happened. ‘Catch them when young’ is the primary solution! Boys have to be taught to respect girls since childhood. Parents have to show equality at home then followed by school, where they spend maximum of their time. There has to be change in the education system. If men understand this and start respecting women, the crime against women would drastically reduce. To see India as a more flourished nation as envisaged in our Constitution, it is time we need to realize what is right and what is wrong and act in an integrated manner so that women can be channelized into mainstream of development and thus contribute to socio-economic prosperity of the nation.

WOMEN’S SAFETY

TRIO RALLY Talk about finances, and the words “black money” is never missed. In an attempt to control this issue, the Income Tax Department, has announced a new scheme – Declaration of assets. To promote this among the citizens of tomorrow, the District Rotaract Council, in association with the Income Tax Department, will be hosting a Trio-rally – a combination of Walkathon(500m), tri-cycle rally(250m) and bicycle rally(1km), on 31st July 2016, at Elliot’s Beach, Besant nagar, at 6:00 a.m. As a prelude to this, the District Rotaract Council meeting will be hosted by the Income tax Department, in their premises in Nungambakkam, on 24th July 2016 (Income Tax Day), at 11:00 a.m., where Mr. Vamsidhar, Assistant Commissioner, Income Tax, will be speaking about the importance of paying Income tax and the various aspects of the new scheme.
