Writer’s Coach House Designed and project managed by Intervention Architecture

This project saw the complete refurbishment & extension of an existing outbuilding in Moseley, Birmingham. Filling the central space with natural light, the double height void created a unique open area within the studio, connecting the lower and upper floors, and enriching the atmosphere with exposed material textures and opening views out to the secluded garden.

A priority from the start of the project was the writer’s view when at work: by incorporating bespoke concealed joinery and split level designs, we designed the main spatial areas to be open plan, with views out from all spaces through generous new window openings. The writer is now able to enjoy looking over the mezzanine level out to the garden via an arched south facing window, creating an outlook for inspiration and deconstructing writer’s block. Through close collaboration with the contractor and the client, the spatial quality of the coach house holds a distinctive contemporary twist on a historic form, balancing the programmatic requirements with a stimulating environment to live and work for a writer. Choir Singer’s House Designed and project managed by Intervention Architecture

Currently on site and nearing completion, this project consists of a full width rear extension and internal alterations for a choir singer in Moseley, Birmingham. The focal point of these works is to create an open plan kitchen living area. The proposed layout includes internal folding doors to a snug area, kitchen joinery to include a full height pantry, low level seating and dining area, with rooflight lanterns over the rear extension. From the rear garden view, the elevation echoes the repeated arch forms found at the front of the Victorian house, linking each new glazed bi-fold door with a semi-circular form on the facade. The arches are further expressed with bronze metal panels to contrast with the reclaimed red brick. Currently on-site, the project is due for completion in May 2017. Home: Where The Heart Is Exhibition piece for Grand Union Gallery in Birmingham

Intervention Architecture has been selected to take part in a show with three other artists for an art exhibition at Grand Union Gallery in Birmingham. The focal point of this entry was the phrase “The home is where the heart is.” Using this as the starting point, Intervention Architecture designed a striking faceted form pavilion structure, altered from a traditional rectilinear space. This would then be filled with re-cast domestic objects to make the space a ‘home’. By scaling, twisting, multiplying and stretching household items within the form, it reveals a simulacra at play, an imagined version of reality. The home is an ever-changing typology: from nuclear family unit to cohabiting living ideologies, it is constantly evolving. With this installation, Intervention Architecture seeks to question the domestic setting of the family dynamic, using architecture and subtle interventions as the methods of choice. The exhibition will run from 2nd-16th June 2017. Be part of Intervention Architecture’s building networks Website

Upholsterer’s Warehouse Designed and project managed by Intervention Architecture

Still a work in progress, this project is reconfiguring a Grade-II Listed warehouse building in the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham. Central to the proposed approach is a integrated joinery design, forming part of a new mezzanine level. Storage is integrated within and around the bed, with new dressing areas and an extended bathroom boasts a freestanding bath, which allows for views across the city centre. A semitranslucent partition between the main bedroom space separates the washing areas, but allows for natural light to flow through the top level of the warehouse building. The project is currently underway and is expected to complete in summer 2017.
