Getting food on the table–every. single. day. multiple. times. a day–has got to be one of every moms’ single hardest responsibilities. If you don’t love to cook or are just super busy and barely surviving, feeding your family can be such a daunting task.
This difficulty is compounded ten times over if you’re in any kind of abnormal or otherwise stressful season that throws you off your normal routine such as bringing home a new baby
There is nothing that helps a family in these situations more than the extremely practical and tangible gesture of providing a meal during this time. To take one of the biggest brain space occupiers off of a family’s plate allows them more capacity to handle the situation at hand and still keep their family fed and taken care of
The best news is that helping to feed a family during a tough season is a task that can be spread among several different people who know or are connected to the family such as co-workers, friends, teammates, neighbors, or some other mutual group members.
If you’ve never heard of it before, Meal Train is an extremely easy-to-use and FREE website that allows you to create a sign up for people to volunteer to provide meals to a family on scheduled days and times.
It takes approximately 10 minutes to set up a Meal Train on their intuitive, self-explanatory website, and then it does almost all of the work for you after that from keeping the schedule, sending out reminders, and providing a way for the recipient family to contact participants in case anything changes
In order to create the Meal Train, you need some logistical and preferential information from the recipient family, including:
Days you wants meals and when you want the Meal Train to start Note: From experienceI recommend providing meals on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for 4 weeks
Number of people we’re feeding- please include all adults (including possible visiting family members) plus older kids eating solids in the household
Any food allergies or preferences
Favorite restaurants, meals, or types of foods so people know what you’ll like
Time you’d like meals delivered
Phone number for people to call/text to coordinate drop off
Email address so people can send meal delivery gift cards
Once you’ve gathered this information, simply follow the user-friendly set up instructions on the Meal Train website. It will then generate a URL for you to send out to anyone who may be willing to help the family. Copy, paste, share, and make a difference! It really is so easy to get started!
MOM
Something dawned on me the other day as I am currently in the throes of my own 4th Trimester with Baby #3. What makes this season difficult isn’t necessarily the lack of sleep or the lack of time or energy to do all the things. It’s the constant changing of plans throughout the day as you’re adjusting to and reacting to your newborn’s behavior.
Especially in those super early weeks–like 1 to 8 weeks–Baby is not on any kind of predictable routine or flow. One morning he wakes up at 6am and the next morning at 8:30am. Sometimes he nurses for 45 minutes, sometimes it’s only 20. Some days he’s perfectly content in the swing and other days he needs to be held 24/7.
And when you and/or your older children already have some established predictable schedules, the lack of consistency with your baby can just throw off the whole dynamic in your house.
For example, when I might normally have planned to play a game with my preschooler before bed, my newborn thwarts that plan by nursing for 3 times as long as he ever has before. And now, we don’t have time to play. My preschooler is understandably disappointed.
So now I can either brave the bedtime routine with an upset and therefore less compliant child, or I can skip bathtime so we can play which then means we have to make sure to take a bath tomorrow which will be hard because we already have plans to go to my parents for dinner…etc, etc. etc.
Or the baby woke up to nurse at 6am instead of 7am and now I’ll have to nurse him again around 9ish instead of 10ish, and I had already planned to go walking with a friend at 9am.
So now I either have to cancel on my friend, find a different time to go (when we already had to move Heaven and Earth to get this day on the calendar), or try to go as planned and pray that my boobs don’t start to leak or the baby doesn’t lose his everloving mind in the stroller.
It’s this constant recalibrating of what needs to get done every day as your newborn keeps throwing your for a loop:
Changing when you run an errand based on how long baby napped that day or when you need to nurse
Trying to make your toddler understand that you can’t push them on the swing like you said you would 10 minutes ago because Baby woke up sooner than expected
Changing what you make for dinner because you couldn’t prep what you needed because baby couldn’t be put down for some reason but then you gotta figure out how to use that chicken that you already defrosted so it doesn’t go bad
“I
wish I had 5 Top Tips to Combat Pivot Fatigue for you. But alas, I don’t.
What I do have instead is the benefit of experience as a third-time mom knowing that this phase of newborn life just is what it is. I know it will end in a month or so and we can get back to our regularly scheduled programming. But it doesn’t make it any less hard in the moment.
Therefore, I have to keep reminding myself that what I need most right now is grace for me and my family and markedly lowered expectations for the time being All the things won’t get done and not everyone will be happy all the time My head will be spinning all day and I’ll be changing our plans 598498 times along the way. And it’s ok.
Sometimes, just putting words to what you’re experiencing takes a huge weight off Hang in there, you gorgeous 4th Trimester Warriors!

Dear Little One,
I’m so sorry I know everyone says I shouldn’t be sorry because I did nothing wrong That this is nature’s way That there was nothing I could have done to make this happen, nor prevent it from happening. But it did. It did happen and you out of all of us, didn’t deserve it
During those 8 weeks we spent together, I imagined what you’d look like Boy? Girl? Would you get along with your older brother?
As heartbroken as I am that we’ll never get to meet you, I’m thankful for you You taught and reminded me a few things that no one else could You taught me acceptance Accepting things I can’t control Accepting that the “Big Man Upstairs” has his own plan for us and to have faith and patience in those plans, despite how much we try to plan on our own terms.
You taught me to brave I always thought I was sort of brave But I didn’t realize (or ever thought about) how brave a woman needed to be, having to go through this, both mentally and physically.
Life is so precious and we never know how long we’ll have with those you love So from now on I’ll be sure to love a little harder To make sure I kiss my husband every night before bed and to snuggle with my son as long as he wants to before he falls asleep, despite the pile of dishes calling my name.

Breastfeeding in the summer
Is there anything worse?! (No The answer is no )
“But it’s a dry heat!”
All the jokes and jeers about Arizona being inhumane and unlivable in the summer with our relentless 110°+ days And it’s all valid because we all know how miserable the summer can be here in the great State 48!
But what’s the most ruthless summer assassin of moms’ sanity and comfort across Arizona truly is? We don’t talk about it enough, and so many of us suffer in silence. Nursing in the summer.
I’ve nursed three babies in Arizona, so I won’t lie to you and say there’s a way to completely avoid the summer nursing misery But I’ve picked up a tip or two to beat (some of) the heat, so I hope these help keep you just a smidge cooler this summer!
Assuming you’re not dressing your baby in long sleeves and pants in the summer, they’ll have more exposed skin that will be touching your body, as well
That much skin to skin contact in extreme heat is not only sweaty and uncomfortable, but it could also cause heat rashes for both you and baby.
Make sure you have some kind of cloth protecting both of you from irritation A nursing cami is a great option because it covers your tummy while allowing easy access to the breast You could also put a muslin blanket or other burp cloth between you.
Summer Breastfeeding Tip #2: Try nursing in the water.
If you’re at the pool and need to feed baby, you don’t have to sweat it out on a deck chair or relegate yourself away from friends and family in the car Try nursing in the pool!
There’s so many nursing-friendly bathing suit options available now, or most swimsuits are stretchy enough that you can just pull them aside to access the breast So, try sitting on the steps or holding your baby in the shallow end to feed
NOTE: If you do attempt this, please make sure baby’s face and your breasts are completely out of the water to ensure that baby does not ingest any pool water
Summer Breastfeeding Tip #3: Dress temperature-appropriate.
Mama, please hear this with all the love in my heart coming straight to you I know how insecure and uncomfortable you can feel in your post-partum body But, not only is our environment hot, your body is burning extra calories to make milk PLUS your hormones could cause you to sweat even more than usual
Please dress yourself appropriately for these blazing temperatures! A week straight of 112° days is not the time to wear a cardigan to cover your arms or to be too ashamed to wear shorts!
Wear whatever is going to keep you cool and comfortable, and forget all the haters–especially the worst one in your own head! Celebrate your body for all the hard work it did creating new life and all the hard work it is continuing to do to sustain you and your baby after
I’m here to guide women and families through every stage of their journey by providing evidence-informed education infused with non-judgmental support, compassion, and empathy.

Today I’m sharing my story about postpartum depression (PPD), and resources for moms who may be experiencing similar symptoms.
I am a mama of seven years to two beautiful boys. Unfortunately, my journey through the newborn stage with my first was overshadowed by a months-long fight with PPD.
If you are currently pregnant or have a friend/sister who is pregnant, my best advice is: find resources for PPD while you’re still pregnant and hang it on the fridge. If you find you need support after the baby comes, it’s one less thing to research; you’ve already figured out where you want to go, who takes your insurance, etc. making it one less daunting task in helping yourself.
Personally, I went to my birth provider and was immediately prescribed Zoloft which started having a positive effect within a week. Shortly after, I began going to therapy on a weekly basis which changed my life forever.
If you are still within the first few months postpartum, you can go to your OB/GYN or midwife to get a diagnosis and medication. Although, from my experience, your birth provider may not be able to do more than confirm your PPD and prescribe Zoloft.
If you are needing additional support or medication or if you are further out from your birth, I would highly recommend finding a psychiatrist and/or therapist.

From meals to kids’ schedules to extended family gatherings, there’s no less than one million things that us moms schedule, coordinate, and plan But have you ever thought to plan what would happen to your children if the unthinkable were to befall you and your partner?
I am your friendly neighborhood former Estate Planning Attorney, a mom of three boys, and I want you to know why establishing a will or a trust is so important especially if you have children
The most common pushbacks I see from young families who have not yet done any estate planning is:
1.
“Planning for death is morbid and macabre, and I can’t bear to fathom what would happen in that situation.”
“We don’t have an ‘estate.’ We aren’t millionaires and don’t own a ton of property or anything.” 2.
To that I say: yes, thinking about death is no fun for anyone But like most things we have to do as adults, put on your big girl panties, do it, and get it out of the way! And then, estate planning is not just about your “stuff;” it’s about how your children will be cared and provided for in the event of your death There is no “estate” more priceless or important to protect than that!
Whatever you decide to do for your family, a will or a trust is going to hopefully ensure that your specific wishes are carried out for your unique family situation There’s a lot that unites us as mothers and families, but we’re not all living the same life and no two families want exactly the same thing
Estate planning is a crucial part of responsible parenting if you have minor children, but even more so if you:
Are in any way, shape, or form a blended family (including close relatives outside of your nuclear family being in blended families)
Have a special needs child
Have substance abuse or other mental health concerns of anyone in your immediate family
Have any tension or challenging familial relationships whatsoever with close relatives
I hope that this information does not just heap another burdensome item on your hopelessly long “To-Do” list, but rather inspires you to take the brave and sometimes difficult step to make sure your children are cared and provided for no matter what

If you’re a new parent, you’ll have lots of questions when choosing the best child care program in your area
Will your child be safe and happy? Will caregivers provide enough love and attention when you’re not around? How will child care affect your baby’s relationship with you?
Researchers have been looking into this for decades, and the good news is that selecting a quality program makes a big difference in promoting healthy development for infants and young children
The National Institutes of Health tracked over 1,300 children from the time they were less than one month old, and found that students who had received high quality infant care earned better grades and had fewer behavior problems in high school.
A long-term study from Virginia Tech and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found that, by age 30, those who had attended quality child care as infants were more likely to complete a college degree, maintain consistent employment and earn higher incomes
So, what exactly makes a quality child care program? The National Association for the Education of Young Children recommends several important things to consider when choosing the best place for your baby
Believe it or not, babies learn a great deal in the first 18 months, and every baby learns at his or her own pace
The best child care programs are firmly grounded in an understanding of early brain development
They recruit and train professional caregivers who support baby’s well-being and learning readiness
Emphasis on relationships Babies need stable relationships with trusted adults Look for a low staff-to-child ratio in which your baby interacts with an attentive primary caregiver
Warmth and affection Babies feel safe and secure when they are gently held during feedings, rocked to make them feel loved and spoken to throughout the day.
Planning and responsiveness. Good infant caregivers let baby experience a variety of sounds, colors, shapes, sizes and textures. Simple, developmentally appropriate challenges such as letting the child reach for an object instead of handing it to them promote a sense of pride and self-esteem
A quality child care program will provide a physical environment that supports your baby’s health and overall well-being.
Health and safety Caregivers should wash their hands frequently, and classroom supplies must be kept clean The program should have separate areas for feeding and diapering A low staff-to-child ratio also means that adults can give adequate attention to each infant, reducing the risk of accidents
Soothing environment Babies can be easily overwhelmed when presented with too much sensory information Child care spaces should be free of clutter, lighting must not be too bright and recorded music should be balanced with periods of quiet time
Open-ended toys Balls and blocks of different sizes, colors and textures teach babies to make comparisons and encourage creativity For infants who are ready to crawl or walk, child-sized furniture enables self-directed activity and develops a sense of independence.
Babies do best with predictable routines and familiar surroundings.
Look for a child care program with defined areas for feeding, sleeping, playing and diapering Planned activities, such as mealtime, nap time and storytime, should take place at the same time every day
Caregivers can introduce new skills when each child is ready, such as letting them feed themselves
Sign language can be introduced to help babies communicate before verbal language develops
The program should include diverse books, toys and songs reflecting a variety of cultures

Their monthly tuition rates encompass a comprehensive set of services, including formula, wipes, baby food, breakfast, lunch, snack, and engaging extracurricular activities.
While structure and routine are important for baby’s well-being, so is a little bit of freedom Quality child care programs include periods of unstructured time when your baby can engage in self-directed activity and exploration
Look for safe open spaces both indoors and out, where baby can move around freely with caregivers close by Infants need quality time away from strollers and baby beds.
This is also a good time to introduce simple games like peekaboo.
For young infants, tummy time is very important. This activity promotes early motor development and is a great time to offer a variety of toys to stimulate baby’s curiosity
Finally, a quality child care program values parental engagement Here are a few quality signals to look for:
Asking parents about home routines and adapting care to meet the child’s individual needs
Keeping parents up-to-date about developmental milestones achieved at the center
Encouraging questions and involvement from parents
At Little Sunshine’s Playhouse & Preschool ®, our Infant Preschool program provides your baby a warm and secure place to thrive with the attentive support of our caring teachers

Pregnancy also comes with it’s fair share of aches and pains, all of which feel 100 times worse when you live in Arizona and the outside temperature is often over 110 degrees. Plus, “summer” refers to the months of May – October, so you’re in it for the long haul here
If you’re new in town or new to summer pregnancy, we’ve polled our writing team for some great tips on surviving pregnancy during the sweltering Arizona summer.
When you have to go outside, here’s some tips:
Cool your car off and start it a few minutes before you have to go and invest in a sun shade for your windshield.
Bring plenty of water! Bring more than you think you need and don’t be afraid to keep some in an insulated bag or small cooler in your car. Having extra isn’t a bad thing and staying hydrated is top priority during these hot months.
Try to get out in early morning or later in the evening! Listen to your body If you’re feeling like you need to take a rest, then you should probably take rest. Growing a human, chasing after kids, going to work…all the things are just a little more difficult while pregnant in the desert. Invest in a portable fan Just do it and thank us later

Pelvic floor what?! If it wasn’t for my background as a yoga teacher and doula, I would have no idea what the pelvic floor is, let alone where to find it So, before we talk about pelvic floor therapy lets clear up any confusion
The pelvic floor is the group of muscles between the tailbone and the pubic bone. It supports the bowel, bladder and vagina. It is also connected to the proper functioning of the hips, pelvis, lower back and abdomen The “core”, for instance, includes the pelvic floor Over the last few years, it seems like it’s become more common to hear about pelvic floor therapy, but I’ve found it’s still pretty common for a lot of mamas to be a little unsure about what to expect, so I thought I’d share with you my experience with pelvic floor therapy
Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy is a specific type of physical therapy (PT) designed to work on a variety of conditions related to the pelvic floor and the other regions of the body connected to it Women of all ages will utilize this type of PT, but you’ll find it most commonly used around childbirth – both in preparation for and healing afterward
I struggled with a condition called diastasis recti, where my abdominal muscles separated during pregnancy Other common reasons would include pain during sex or in the lower back/hips/pubic bone regions, leaking & incontinence, weakness or being overly tight in pelvic floor muscles, bladder or bowel issues, organ prolapse and even general wellness Although every therapist will be different, here’s an idea of what to expect when you go
At Gibson Body Wellness they believe in a full-body approach to pelvic floor rehab. During a pelvic floor evaluation, your PT will perform a whole body evaluation, including the pelvic floor, to address all your needs and develop a specific care plan designed just for you
Their approach is unique in that they treat in a very integrative and holistic way, due to the nature of the integrative wellness clinic they are a part of here at Kokua Wellness Their office is kid and baby friendly and do offer remote care as well for your convenience. gibsonbodywellness.com
In pelvic floor PT, I started with the breath first I used my breath to relax and engage my pelvic floor and abdomen, as well as to engage muscles for proper posture
My next session started with me standing in front of the mirror and breathing to watch where my breath was in my body and redirecting it to my abdomen
A lot of women are surprised to find that a great deal of their session is dedicated to working on the breath first before introducing any movement It can be hard to surrender to a session where I “don’t get much done,” but I reminded myself how important the breathing component is first This is your first step in the healing process and will prove to be the most effective
The physical therapy component here consists of targeted exercises that vary depending on your condition, as well as other healing modalities like massage, stretching, hands on adjustments and increased postural awareness
Although an internal exam isn’t typically the first thing done at pelvic floor PT, there is really no other way to make an accurate assessment of the health of the pelvic floor without feeling and seeing
Then, with a gloved hand, the therapist will insert one finger up through the opening of the vagina and complete an internal exam by moving their finger along the pelvic floor muscles They may also ask you to relax or tighten the muscles while inside
This may seem awkward and uncomfortable, but just like any other part of the body, my doctor explained that she needs to see it and feel it to get a better sense of what’s going on and how it can be helped

You founded your business with your spouse. How did you start the company together?
I always knew that I wanted to work with kids I went to school to become an early education teacher. When I graduated, finding a teaching position was next to impossible I ended up working as a nanny for the next 13 years

It may seem silly to head to the dentist for an infant with just a few teeth, but pediatric dentistry is a helpful way to make the dentist a healthy habit, and a safe place, early on
Our writer, Jessica, was a pediatric dental assistant for 20+ years, and here’s her best tips for what to expect at your baby’s first dental appointment.
Book Early: As soon as your little one’s first tooth pops up, book that first pediatric dentist appointment It’s a great way to start good habits early!
Build a Relationship: Just like with your pediatrician, having a good relationship with your dentist is super helpful. They’re there for you and your child, even for those unexpected dental emergencies like when kids chip a tooth couch surfing
Introduction Session: This first visit is all about introductions The dentist will show you how to brush, floss, and establish healthy dental habits with your baby
Baby Teeth Matter: Those tiny baby teeth are really important! They help guide the adult teeth that will come later, so they deserve care and attention.
Knee-to-Knee Exam: Expect to hold your child on your lap during the exam. The dentist will use a “knee-toknee” approach where your child leans back onto their lap
Prep with Books/Videos: To ease any anxiety, check out some cute books or videos about visiting the dentist "Dora Goes to the Dentist" is a fun way to get them excited about their visit!
No Judgment Zone: Don’t stress if your child resists every parent knows kids can be tricky Just like they might fight diaper changes, it’s normal for them to be a bit fussy about the dentist.
